5 out of 5 stars Please to meet you,Mr. Danny Wilson!.......2007-07-25

I'm 48 old ,but my feeling for good music is still intact. When a song hit me I have a thrill, like a nice fever!
Only 3 weeks ago I was looking for something new in AMG:on the Steely Dan page I red the list of similar artists and I thought"Danny Wilson:who is this?"
I bought The best of.. and began to listen to it on my car.
The first song is Davy:nice, good sound and a familiar voice.
Than came a music I knew, one of those perfect songs that thrill me and I remembered that song(Mary's prayer, yes!).I thought"I know this singer and this song:it's not knew ,but 4/5 years old"
I was wrong!
The song was born 20 years ago,the singer is Gary Clark and the group Danny Wilson disbanded in 1990 after only 2 albums, then Gary wrote a great solo album and was on the King L album and now write songs for others(Natalie Imbruglia and Nick Carter(?) among the others)
Now,I know that the times are changed (Marylin Manson,Robbie Williams or Christina Aguilera hit the charts!),but if an artist like Gary Clark has done only 4 album in 20 years, have not a personal site on internet and it's impossible to know if he will never sing on another record the world is, at least for me,a little more sad!
Buy every record he has done :Meet Danny Wilson,Bebop Moptop,Ten short songs about love and the King L album. All the songs are wonderful, and if for someone Danny Wilson(Gary Clark)is a one hit wonder, for me is an artist like Donald Fagen,Smokey Robinson,Todd Rundgren,Michael McDonald,Daryl Hall and a few others.
Can I ask you if someone can tell me how to find Sweet Danny Wilson 2nd cd?

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-04-10

Some of the best music I've ever heard. Mary's Prayer was a huge hit in the U.S., but there are 4-5 other songs on this CD that are just as good. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best suprises.......2007-03-08

This is one of the best, and most suprising albums from the 80's and 90's. Most of the songs on the cd could've been a hit anywhere if they would've been pushed properly. Mary's Prayer is one of those rare songs that actually make me stop what I'm doing and really listen, not just to the vocals, but the backround itself. The members of the band are truely musicians in their own right.

5 out of 5 stars DANNY WILSON, BECAME A GOOD FREIND.......2006-10-11

This is a great album- was relistening to it this morning. Every song holds up today and I can listen to every track and not have to skip like with some cd's. I really like the lead singer's voice(sorry, can't think of his name right now). He sings with so much passion and drama. I have to disagree with the comparison with Steely Dan. They sound nothing like SD. Each band has their own individual sound and the lead vocalists sing differently. The only similarity maybe the smooth, airy pop feel of each DW and SD's material. I bought "MARY'S PRAYER" on 45 speed record when it was released in the spring of 1987. The B-side was "RUBY'S GOLDEN WEDDING." Have you noticed alot of the tracks are suspiciously entitled with people's names. Could they have been personal freinds of the member of Danny Wilson? Hmmmm?

5 out of 5 stars Transcends its time...a pop masterpiece.......2006-05-11

Danny Wilson is quite an oddity in the world of pop music. Almost no one knows who they are today, and not many people knew who they were in 1987, when this album was released. There were plenty of here-today-gone-tomorrow pop bands at the time: Anyone remember T'Pau? Bourgeous Tagg? Johnny Hates Jazz? Well, you're not alone if you have no idea what I'm talking about. For the most part these synth-heavy, lyrically pretentious groups are best forgotten.

But not so with the trio called Danny Wilson.

As has been stated by others, the music of Danny Wilson is basically intelligent, well-played, adult pop music. The Steely Dan comparisons are inevitable, and fairly accurate. Both feature complex, jazz-infused instrumentation, thoughtful and sometime puzzling lyrics, and passionate vocal performances.

I won't take time here to discuss each track separately, because they are all basically well-made and hold up to repeat listening. If you're not familiar with the band, the only track you might know is the single "Mary's Prayer," as pure and perfect a pop confection as you're likely to ever hear. But it's also just the jumping-off point for an album's worth of expertly crafted songs.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, melancholy music.......2006-03-08

The opening line of Mary's Prayer - "Everything is wonderful" - is quietly devastating. The singer's obvious melancholy pervades the entire song. I bought this album because I loved the song, and was pleasantly surprised to find that every track is well written and marvelously performed. I wish this band had stayed together, and put out more than one album!

5 out of 5 stars Thought I Was the Only One!.......2005-04-20

I can't remember when I first heard them but I bought the CD years ago, before they were featured in Something About Mary. The first song I heard also was Mary's Prayer and every other song on the album is excellent. As the other reviewer stated, excellent lyrics and intriguing melodies. Stands the test of time - I still listen to it regularly!!

4 out of 5 stars Fine '80s popcraft.......2003-09-19

I missed these guys first time around (late '80s), and only picked up on them after their biggest single, "Mary's Prayer," was featured in the film "Something About Mary."

What do they sound like? Danny Wilson has been compared to The Big Dish, The Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout and Deacon Blue; to me they sort of sound like a sleek, British pop version of Steely Dan.

Over the years, they've developed the sort of cult following that usually develops with artists possessing well-honed songwriting talents. Worth checking out.
