Their Odessey and Oracle is considered a pop classic, but unfortunately the Zombies had disbanded by the record's 1968 release. Four decades later, eternal versions of that album's "This Will Be Our Year," "A Rose for Emily," "Beechwood Park," "Care of Cell 44," and "Time of the Season" make this 25-song live reunion of founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent worth the effort. Though no other Zombie was aboard for the 2004 project (including underrated guitarist/vocalist Chris White), Argent's burning keyboards, Blunstone's inimitable voice, and skilled backing musicians assure that the entire band receives its due, particularly on the Odessey selections and nuggets from the singles collection, including Argent's "Tell Her No" and "Indication," Blunstone's "Just Out of Reach," and White's "I Love You." The harmonic backing vocals that littered the Zombies catalog are astoundingly intact, with only the occasional ramble into Argent's eponymous post-Zombies band (remember "Hold Your Head Up"?) left to clutter the sequencing. (A 16-song DVD of performances from the Bloomsbury Theatre show is also available, including multiple camera angles, immaculate sound, and four of the CD's five Odessey and Oracle numbers.) --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars The Return of the Zombies.......2007-06-28

I have always been a fan of Argent. And to see them live on DVD after all these years, was a rare treat. I've watched the concert DVD a couple of times, yet, I can honestly say the price was worth it just to see Rod Argent play his craft. I'm just a sucker for Hammond B3 players. While the Leslie speakers aren't twirling on the sides, watching Rod play is pure "Pleasure". Colin is singing with passion, the drums and base play to the talent around them, the strings were a nice addition. The bands song selection included all thier major hits, especially God Gave Rock and Roll to You, and Hold Your Head Up.

Thanks for the reuniting of this great group! It's really a trip to be able to finally see one of my early hero's live, since I never had the chance to see Argent live in concert.

By the way, if you really like Rod Argent, look for "Red House". It's quite a departure of his "fury on the organ", more laid back and introspective, yet shows his talent as a composure.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent glimpse of one of the greatest bands of the 60s........2007-06-09

While Colin Blunstone hay have aged, his voice sounds almost as good as it did 40 years ago. Versions of "Care of Cell 44", "Time Of the Season", "Tell Her No" , and an uptempo cover of "What Becomes Of the Brokenhearted" incorporate the breathy vocals of Blunstone with the one of a kind keyboard playing of Rod Argent. This is a must own for true Zombies fans as it provides a very rare live performance from a band that broke up before their huge success with the album "Odessey and Oracle"

3 out of 5 stars Nice to Hear Them Again, but Where Is Chris White?.......2007-05-25

In the broadest sense, I think it's fair to say that the Zombies got a raw deal. They were one of the most talented and intelligent bands during the latter part of the British invasion, and yet they were thrown on the scrap heap of history. Two ridiculously catchy hit singles swept through America during our '64-'65 obsession with the London scene; "Tell Her No" and "She's Not There" combine raw rock and roll with a jazz sensibility that still sounds fresh today. Subsequently, their record company rewarded the band by refusing to issue their brilliant psychedelic album masterpiece entitled "Odessey and Oracle." Thankfully, Al Kooper (of Blood, Sweat & Tears, the Dylan sessions, et. al.) saw the folly of this decision and begged Columbia to right the situation. Eventually, the album saw daylight, but sold poorly, despite the extracted single that became a best seller. "Time of the Season" sounded ahead of its time in 1968, despite the fact that it was recorded nearly two years before its release. Eventually, the band collapsed under the weight of so much indifference, and the most we've heard since then is the occasional project by keyboardist Rod Argent.
"Live at Bloomsbury Theatre" celebrates the reunion of Rod Argent with vocalist Colin Blunstone. Technically, they alone cannot represent a reforming of the Zombies, since songwriter/vocalist Chris White has always been an integral part of the band. His absence is felt, but after so much time, it's nice to hear these tunes, even without White's crucial input. The CD is a generous 2-disk set containing 25 songs, while the DVD pairs the song selection down to a less unwieldy 15 tracks. The editing is a good thing, allowing the video to hold the viewer's interest significantly better than the CD collection. All of the major hits are here, including Argent's best-known solo work, such as "Hold Your Head Up" and "God Gave Rock and Roll to You." The performances are admirably executed, often utilizing a string section to augment that standard rock and roll configuration of the actual band. Argent sounds great and Blunstone is in fine voice throughout. In summation, "Live at the Bloomsbury" is a fine but faulted collection, never quite transcending its aura of nostalgia, while glossing over the absence of Chris White. B Tom Ryan

3 out of 5 stars Back to the Past!.......2006-07-20

Although the big classic hit, "She's Not There," could have sounded a bit better, this is still a must have CD for any fan of the 60's and the Zombies's!

3 out of 5 stars Great music? Yes! Zombies? Sort of.......2006-07-14

No one was more excited to see Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone back on the stage together performing many of their great Zombies tracks together, when they first reunited some 5-6 years ago. I have seen then 4 times in that time.

However, I have to admit a certain hesitation when they (no doubt some marketing folks) decided to stop going by their names and start calling themselves the Zombies. Not that they don't represent a large chunk of the sound of that band, but let's be honest. Could Paul and George go out and call themselves the Beatles? Probably not.

The "real" Zombies only reunited once to my knowledge, in London, some 5-6 years ago, and guitarist Paul Atkinson passed away in April of 2004.

However, the real missing link here is bassist-songwriter Chris White. White penned many of the group's lesser-known (albeit not lesser in quality) hits, including most of the pinnacle of the group's career, Odessey & Oracle. Great songs such as "Leave Me Be" "I Love You" "Beechwood Park" "Brief Candles" and dozens more all came solely from the pen of Chris White, along with stellar bass playing and harmony vocals.

I doubt very seriously if Rod Argent or Colin Blunstone would disagree with me on this point. If Chris White had never been in the band, they wouldn't have been The Zombies. A great band yes, but certainly not the same.

Not that there's anything wrong with Jim Rodford's (late of the Kinks) bass playing, but he doesn't represent The Zombies.

In short, if they are going to use The Zombies moniker, please get Chris White back in the band!

Lastly, the guitar playing of Keith Airey (late of Paul McCartney's band) is the weak link here. Turning in pedestrian, noodley solos more fit for a Van Halen cover band than the understated, moody tones that Paul Atkinson originally laid down on these tracks. The Zombies were always an organ driven band, not guitar, and that was what set them apart originally.

All of that being said, and soapbox removed, this is a good document of some great songs, performed well by 2 of the original 5 members of one of the best bands to come out of England in the 1960's. Better enjoyed live in my opinion, but if they can't come to you, then certainly this live CD is a good 2nd option.

Throw in a few decent Argent (as in Rod Argent's solo band of the 70's) and Colin solo tunes and a few obligatory (and mediocre) new tunes and there you have it.

5 out of 5 stars The Zombies Live Again!.......2006-06-19

Many of us remember that the Zombies were a mid-sixties British band which had a relatively short-lived career. In fact, their classic hit, "Time of the Season" was released after they disbanded. Leader Rod Argent went on to form the group, "Argent", and lead singer, Colin Blunstone has a minor solo career. Here, the group is back together and better than ever. In fact, the listener is privileged to hear a "greatest hits" amalgam of the Zombies, Argent, and Blunstone.

Highlights include: An extended version of the Zombies first hit: "She's Not There", with a fabulous keyboard solo by Rod Argent, just as a live version should be. Their lovely follow-up single, "Tell her No" is also included, demonstrating Blunstone's superb vocals; Songs from the legendary LP, "Oddessey and Oracle: "Time of the Season" (arguably their best single), "Beachwood Park", "A Rose for Emily; The song, "I Love You", a US hit for the group, "People" (I never knew this was originally a Zombies tune). From Argent: "Hold Your Head Up", and the anthemic, "God Gave Rock and Roll to You"; From Blunstone's solo career, the Russ Ballard-penned, lush and gorgeous: "I Don't Believe in Miracles".

One minor criticism, there is not much verbal banter between songs, but make no mistake the Zombies are live and in fine form. The Zombies are back and I'm glad!

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any better.......2005-09-27

I have been a fan of the Zombies since their first album and have followed their solo output through the years.Last year (2004) I was fortunate enough to see the Zombies (Rod and Colin) at BB King's in NYC.They were great. This album captures the same songs that I heard on their tour last year so it is a great sovinier from the show.(A DVD version of this show was released in Europe so I am hoping it will be available here soon.)

This CD is extremely well recorded and crisp and the performances are excellent. The live song arrangements mirror their original recorded versions, no overblown "updated" songs. "Time Of The Seasons" is really tight and they manage to reproduce all of those great Zombies harmonies.Any Zombies, Argent or Blunstone fans should get this asap.It just doesn't get any better.

5 out of 5 stars Zombies/Argent/Bluntstone-Just Right, Just in Time.......2005-06-22

This live album is well-recorded and well-performed.
Song selection is excellent, as well.
One thing that struck me is the faithful presentation
of the original, even the improvisations. There is
none of the excessive '70's soloing; this band is tight.
And, make no mistake; this is Rod Argent's band, his
arrangements and his gig.
If you've been a fan of Argent/Bluntstone from the
Zombies, or of Argent, you'll thoroughly enjoy
this performance.
