The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11

Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.

The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.

Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.

This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.

Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07

Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.

I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.

I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.

A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25

Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.

The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.

Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

What an awesome surprise!.......2005-08-23

I saw Sonya Kitchell in concert as an opening act for Susan Tedeschi and the audience was barely paying attention as we were seated. Within minutes, Sonya had capitivated the audience and people started paying attention and the idle chatter quickly hushed. You knew you were hearing something special. With a quiet but demure demeanor she drew the audience in until the final tune of her set had the audience singing along to "Fly Away". Each song on this album shows a little different aspect to her talent, and I love each song. I have had her CD on repeat for about two weeks now and people comment on her music no matter how low it is played. She can do jazz, she can do the blues, she can do anything she puts her mind to doing.

I get excited when I "find" a new musician, and though she has been around a bit, I feel like I found her. She is an exciting new singer/songwriter who can play her instrument and captivate with her voice and style.

Some choice Otis cuts here.......2001-02-12

First off, the disclaimer: Otis Rush is my main man. A big blues fan, I put Otis's playing and voice up at the top of my list along with a select few: Muddy, Buddy, Albert and Freddie King. As noted everywhere, his recorded output can be uneven, but I really like this set. Along with the Otis standard "All Your Love" (made famous when Clapton did it while he was with the Bluesbreakers) there's some hot licks on You're Breaking My Heart, Society Woman, and Part Time Love. If you want to check out Otis Rush, this would be a good place to start!

This offbeat disc of seasonal songs and carols by the Anonymous 4 will delight their fans and please everyone else. The 19 selections include traditional folk melodies and texts, some of which date back to the Middle Ages, interspersed with fitting selections by contemporary composers including John Taverner, Benjamin Britten, and Peter Maxwell Davies, whose ethereal a cappella A Calender of Kings gets its first recording. Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. The disc is crammed with highlight tracks, like the lilting Cornish Wassail song and the Irish Good people all, and haunting numbers like "Flight into Egypt," sung in Gaelic, and "Behold, here is the best morning," sung in Welsh. Excellent sonics and Harmonia Mundi's typically fine production values also help make this a Christmas disc that will give joy in July. --Dan Davis

Anonymous 4 has brought us a beautiful selection of 19 traditional songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. These include a lesser known work by Henry VIII as well as more contemporary songs by John Tavener, Richard Bennett, Geoffrey Burgon and Benjamin Britten, and a piece commissioned for the group from Peter Davies. Andrew Lawrence-King accompanies on Irish harp, Baroque harp and psaltery. There is a short essay on the traditions and legacy of the concept of Yule, a Cetic midwinter celebration, and this and the informative liner notes are given in English, French and German, accompanied by Celtic drawings.

The songs are pure, simple and very beautiful -- a welcome addition to your holiday listening.

Goose Flesh!.......2003-12-09

This is a remarkable quartet, singing with purity and style, from the haunting to the merry, medieval chant to modern settings of Celtic religious texts. Where there are arrangements, they are lovely and the instrumental pieces are simple and beautiful. This is the first time I have heard this group of women, and I am enchanted. It's a cappella at its very best: look to your laurels, King's Singers and Chanticleer, here come the ladies!

This might be my favorite holiday album. It's one of the first I pull out in November and doesn't get put away until February.

A perfect way to celebrate the Christmas spirit any time of year with some truly "old" favorites, performed with spirit and heart by the Baltimore Consort. Period selections imbued here with the consort's singular sound and creative improvisations include "Ding Dong Merrily on High", "The Old Year Now Away is Fled", "The Cherry Tree Carol", "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day", "Es ist ein Ros", "In Dulci Jubilo", and many more that may charm you for the first time. The Baltimore Consort is: Mary Anne Ballard, viols and rebec; Mark Cudek, cittern, guitar, viols and bandora; Custer LaRue, soprano soloist; Larry Lipkis, viol, recorder and gemshorn; Ronn McFarlane, lutes; and Chris Norman, wooden flutes and pennywhistle; with Webb Wiggins on organ.

'Twas the day after Thanksgiving, and all through the house, Christmas spirit was stirring and starting to rouse feelings of joy and expectation in the hearts of the people who were there. Beautiful music and Custer LaRue's singing filled the air.

Wonderful songs, written by people long dead, caused pictures to form and stories to dance through each listening head. Stories of a virgin bearing a child, stories of the little Savior's entrance into this world...meek and mild.

Each song is sung with such haunting beauty and care. The Consort's playing could not be more wonderfully fair. Each song is a masterpiece--"The Cherry Tree Carol," "In dulci jubilo," and "Quem pastores laudavere." Each song's focus is on the true meaning of Christmas--no appearance made by St. Nick--but with singing like this, in your head they are sure to stick.

More beautifully than snowflakes this music drifts down. In sheer loveliness, "Christmas Is My Name" deserves the crown. Oh but each tune is strong--like "Ding Dong Merrily" and "The Wren Song." Most come in at under three minutes each, none is overlong. Each is stunning...how can the listener go wrong? How they twinkle...they are most merry. One even makes mention of Cherries.

A Christmas Favorite.......2000-12-09

Had enough of animated snowmen and over-sweetened carol arrangements? Here's a hugely enjoyable recording of songs and dances done with flair by the Baltimore Consort. There are a few familiar tunes, such as the lilting arrangement of "Ding, Dong Merrily On High" and a beautiful solo flute version of "Lo, How a Rose 'Er Blooming." But most the songs are off the beaten track, and are therefore fresh and new despite their antiquity. Custer LaRue brings feeling and energy into the songs. This has become the most played Christmas CD in our household.

Excellent performances and unique music.......1999-12-13

This is my favorite Christmas CD, and it is very different from everything else we hear this time of year.

Second consecutive masterwork.......2006-03-08

Classic mixture of Black Umbrella pop-rock introspection with Radiohead, Flaming Lips and Rush-style prog leanings. Essential for anyone who enjoyed all of Thought Industry's previous albums including Black Umbrella enough to stay onboard once they dropped the metal element (a process that really started way back on Outer Space anyway). Black Umbrella might have had more songs that jumped out at you on first listen... this is more of a "big acheivement from beginning to end" type album, 16 great songs, 70+minutes. Ignore at your own risk if you're already an avid listener of earlier TI.

Lush progressive alt-rock from the masters of tech-metal.......2004-09-09

Thought Industry started off in the early 90's as a bizarre tech-metal band incorporating diverse non-metal influences. Their sound evolved over several releases and finally culminated on this 2001 release, their swansong, as a potent blend of alt-rock, indie, prog and a certain lingering intangible metal aesthetic. "Short Wave on a Cold Day" is a lush, cerebral, and diverse offering that is now quite hard to find. Their label, Metal Blade, apparently did not know how to market music like this and promptly deleted the album from their catalogue within a year of its release. It's a tragedy, because this album should have been huge. The band is now inactive, but has left us with a legacy of challenging and forward-thinking music.

"Short Wave on a Cold Day" is an album that should appeal to a broad cross-section of music afficianados. It's firmly within the alt-rock/indie vein; but it also has a certain metal aesthetic lingering that should appeal to the more open-minded fans of that genre. I think it's in the instrumental prowess displayed on this disc.

This album has a very cohesive sound and a consistancy of material throughout. The main adjective that comes to mind is "lush". It's one of those dreamy, beautiful albums that can really take you on a journey. Each song has a hook, yet is sufficiently challenging to prevent mass accessibility. It's truly an album you can sink your teeth into, and discover new layers of aural bliss upon each listen.

The songs are deceptively complex and display an instrumental proficiency uncommon to this type of music. The vocalist has a pleasantly light voice and is not shy about using falsetto. The guitar is quite textural, the bass quite thick and expansive, the drums providing shimmering cymbalscapes, and a myriad of electronics and keyboards softening the edges and creating dense layers of cloudmusic that goes on for miles. The lyrics are some sort of esoteric poetry. I feel watery, wintry, and airy when I listen to this album. It's a musical experience like no other.

Highlights include the oceanic, frosty "Tall Ships on the Rocks"; the acoustic lament of "Lovers in Flames" and the curiously dark "Hello, Murder".

Each Thought Industry album is drastically different, but each is fantastic. I give the highest recommendation to their entire catalogue.

This CD marks an interesting sound that doesn't exist in music today. Some would argue that that's for a good reason. I would argue them and run if it came to blows. But nonetheless, I would argue it verbally for hours on end if given the chance (unless of course, I had something better to do). This band throws all the rules out the window and creates some of the most unique hard rock you will ever hear. I prefer their debut, "Songs For Insects" but this CD reiterates their dedication to the bizarre and gives a big "F You" to what is expected. God love 'em!

It's freezing; I'm burning up........2001-12-11

Overall this should (and will) be hailed as Thought Industry's crowning achievement. It skirts the edge of both their worlds, the manic insanity and stream of conscious lyricism of their first three records, as well as the simple arrangement beauty and stark, personally bitter prose of 1997's Black Umbrella. All the while maintaining that indescribable left-field space rock sound that Thought Industry has either pioneered or compiled (re: stolen) from so many different bands that it is all but impossible to generate a list of contemporaries.

The pinnacle point of the record comes about halfway through with "Lovers in Flames." Upon first inspection, a very simple acoustic track with the most scattered lyrics since "Blistered Text and Bleeding Pens" from '93's Songs For Insects. Subsequent listens expose rolling bass lines and nifty acoustic interplay that add immeasurable depth to terrifically simple chord progressions. Oberlin also tackles himself for the first time on the record, speaking of the "cancer reeds in his brain." In the song (and I guess in life) Brent is "okay, you know [he's] okay", so what does he do? He self-destructs with a petulant lover, strapping his "forehead to a landmine" and "run[ning] into a wall."

My favorite band has just released what might soon become my favorite record. Already the best of 2001.

Short Wave.......2001-10-09

Having been first introduced to Thought Industry during the Outer Space era...I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this album. And in fact, put off buying it for a few weeks, something i'd never done with umbrella or good deeds. Nevertheless i'm quite satisfied with this album, although it took quite a while to get used to. Brent, as always, writes his songs like what they are, poetry set to music. I greatly miss his classic "howl from hell" voice. But hey I can't say i'd be quite the fan of The Who that I am, if they had continued to milk the formula for "My generation". My best advice is to know what you're getting into with the album. If you're still a diehard fan of the powermetal T.I. just let this one slide. Even musicians grow up after all.
