This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I bought the CD since it had one of my favorite songs on it. I did not know most of the other songs, but I have really grown to like them. A lot of these songs are not played on the radio. I am glad that I bought this CD since it has introduced me to other great songs by Authority Zero. If you like this band this is a really great CD!

The only reason this album doesnt get 4 stars is cos there is some filler. No doubt.

The good songs on here though are really really high quality. Over Seasons was the first Zero song I heard, I loved it.

Its harmless yet meaningful music. Its kinda ska I guess if you're trying to categorise it, but its varying degrees of punk and general rock misxed in there.

The reason you buy this album is for the following songs:
One More Minute
Passage In Time
Over Seasons
Everyday
Lying Awake

To me, the rest simply arent as good. I understand that an album cant have straight good songs, but the fall in quality is a lot.

This being said, I love these guys and wish they would tour the UK.

The only complaint is that I have different versions of "A Passage In Time" and "Sky's the Limit" on my computer...I like those versions better and I think they should've been put on this CD either with or instead of the other ones. These guys are awesome live, too. Check them out and buy this CD!

This CD is one of the best to introduce your friends and family to Dead Can Dance. The wide variety of music is more than 'background music'. The pieces grab hold of you for the first time and you become so moved by the music. This CD got me hooked on Dead Can Dance and I have searched for so many of their other pieces to add to my collection.

Your pick. But this is a unique collection that takes traditional sounds and expands on them to include different instrumentation, a really exotic voice, and a feel to take you to alternate realities.

The music is not consistent from one track to the next but it is all in the umbrella of Dead Can Dance. To extract what you really want you may need to buy a few of the albums and do a little ripping.

If you are going to buy one album I would suggest starting with this one. Although I found most track intriguing my favorites are 2 (Song Of Sophia), 12 (The Song Of The Sybil) and 8 (The Host Of Seraphim). The only problem with Song of Sophia is that it is too short.

Track 7 (Wilderness) had the sound and feel of a Gregorian chant.

I guess I am a sucker for Lisa Gerrard I am thinking of purchasing "The Mirror Pool". For the most part Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard play off one another and picked up most of their multicultural sounds while working in Melbourne.

My daughter brought the CD on a recent road trip, hoping I would like it as much as she does. While this disk isn't one I would be likely to choose for driving tunes, when I got it home and could listen to it more carefully, I discovered a rich sound full of movement and color for the imagination.

The mixture of music types flows from culture to culture, touching on legends and myths allowing us to sample places and times we may otherwise miss. As soon as I return her CD, I will be making a purchase (or two) and start my own collection of Dead Can Dance.

Took me a while to really get into Dead Can Dance but now I can't imagine not having them in my CD collection. I've always loved exotic, ambient and meditative music and Dead Can Dance are unlike anything else I've heard. This compilation consists of a rich mixture of tribal, choir, medievil gothic, world and ambient soundscape. I don't feel it's fair to categorise DCD as merely 'new age' or 'gothic' when it is both and a whole lot more. I've hunted for music like this for so long before I was even aware of DCD and it's all here. Very raw, minimal, sensual and soothing without being ruined by added layered synths and electronica. Stripped down and peaceful. One of the best CDs I own.

Chances are, you don't have anything else like this in your cd collection. I've been listening for 13 years and still have no real comparisons. Only the "Cocteau Twins" or a darker "Enya" come to mind...but not really. Though some of their stuff has kind of a tribal sound to it, most of this collection is more gothic, more medieval. I always envision this music coming out of some cathedral, in a far away and mysterious place, hundreds of years ago. That's what's so wonderful about "Dead Can Dance". They can transport you to places other music cannot. I also enjoy both the male, and female vocals, on the tracks that have them. I honestly think that someone would enjoy most of their albums equally, but this does give you a taste of many of them. This is a good place to expand your knowledge of music through time.

          This CD is one of the best to introduce your friends and family to Dead Can Dance. The wide variety of music is more than 'background music'. The pieces grab hold of you for the first time and you become so moved by the music. This CD got me hooked on Dead Can Dance and I have searched for so many of their other pieces to add to my collection.

          Your pick. But this is a unique collection that takes traditional sounds and expands on them to include different instrumentation, a really exotic voice, and a feel to take you to alternate realities.

          The music is not consistent from one track to the next but it is all in the umbrella of Dead Can Dance. To extract what you really want you may need to buy a few of the albums and do a little ripping.

          If you are going to buy one album I would suggest starting with this one. Although I found most track intriguing my favorites are 2 (Song Of Sophia), 12 (The Song Of The Sybil) and 8 (The Host Of Seraphim). The only problem with Song of Sophia is that it is too short.

          Track 7 (Wilderness) had the sound and feel of a Gregorian chant.

          I guess I am a sucker for Lisa Gerrard I am thinking of purchasing "The Mirror Pool". For the most part Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard play off one another and picked up most of their multicultural sounds while working in Melbourne.

          My daughter brought the CD on a recent road trip, hoping I would like it as much as she does. While this disk isn't one I would be likely to choose for driving tunes, when I got it home and could listen to it more carefully, I discovered a rich sound full of movement and color for the imagination.

          The mixture of music types flows from culture to culture, touching on legends and myths allowing us to sample places and times we may otherwise miss. As soon as I return her CD, I will be making a purchase (or two) and start my own collection of Dead Can Dance.

          Took me a while to really get into Dead Can Dance but now I can't imagine not having them in my CD collection. I've always loved exotic, ambient and meditative music and Dead Can Dance are unlike anything else I've heard. This compilation consists of a rich mixture of tribal, choir, medievil gothic, world and ambient soundscape. I don't feel it's fair to categorise DCD as merely 'new age' or 'gothic' when it is both and a whole lot more. I've hunted for music like this for so long before I was even aware of DCD and it's all here. Very raw, minimal, sensual and soothing without being ruined by added layered synths and electronica. Stripped down and peaceful. One of the best CDs I own.

          Chances are, you don't have anything else like this in your cd collection. I've been listening for 13 years and still have no real comparisons. Only the "Cocteau Twins" or a darker "Enya" come to mind...but not really. Though some of their stuff has kind of a tribal sound to it, most of this collection is more gothic, more medieval. I always envision this music coming out of some cathedral, in a far away and mysterious place, hundreds of years ago. That's what's so wonderful about "Dead Can Dance". They can transport you to places other music cannot. I also enjoy both the male, and female vocals, on the tracks that have them. I honestly think that someone would enjoy most of their albums equally, but this does give you a taste of many of them. This is a good place to expand your knowledge of music through time.
