This mini-album is comprised of six songs that were originally part of a full-length work recorded in 2002 for RCA, just as the label entered a merger and cut a large part of their roster, including David Mead. Rescued from limbo, these songs are glorious pop gems, carefully constructed from their writing on through to production and arrangements. Meads melodic sensibilities and clear, unaffected voice bring to mind Crowded House and Neil Finn . The opening title track has a near-orchestral lushness, but it's all made out of guitars, keyboards, drums, and vocals. He subsequently scaled down with the more intimate Indiana in 2004, but this is a regal delight from beginning to end, twenty-two and a half minutes of pure and romantic pop glory. --David Greenberger

It's no secret that life's darkest moments often place us face-to-face with whatever, or wherever, we've placed our faith. That is the emotional climate listeners will find themselves in with Third Day's Wherever You Are, the band's eighth major release and a transparent and stark portrayal of where one finds the reason to carry on. Dealing with a number of recent personal tragedies, the band has forged its finest work to date with a collection of material that ranges from raging rockers to contemplative worship songs. The release opens with the take-no-prisoners urgency of "Tunnel" and finds singer Mac Powell offering hope in the face of difficulty and backed by the driving guitar work of Brad Avery and Mark Lee. The first single, "Cry Out to Jesus," simmers in a lyrical candor that can't help but be an emotional powerhouse as the song is carried by the band's rocking spirit. "I Can Feel It" is another wall-of-sound, guitar storm guaranteed to move you. Worship roots remain strong (see Offerings and Offerings II) as well for Third Day and we can find them on the reflective "Communion." Never ones to back down from the delicate issues, Third Day tackles church hypocrisy and judgmental attitudes with the searing "How Do You Know." The passion and talent of Third Day shines brightly here, making it the band's finest moment and one of Christian rock's best releases in recent memory. --Michael LyttleAlbum Description

'Yes, I must go through the valley, to stand upon the mountain of G-d'-"Mountain of G-d".......2007-07-08
Yes, not very original lyrics, but to a christian, this long journey symbolizes life's troubles, the valley, the darkest, worst times or even then on the spiritual plane, just boring or lifeless. And G-d is always with us if we are true to Him in all aspects of our lives. This song has become my rallying cry.
At first I was extremely disappointed with the music, but I gradually warmed up to it, and now I can't stop playing it. The words from "Cry Out to Jesus" first spoke to me in my car one day, after having heard it several times, half listening to the words. The chorus, especially speaks of what Christ offers to everyone and what christianity as the body of Christ should offer to others: 'There is hope for the helpless, rest for the weary, love for the broken heart. There is grace and forgiveness, mercy and healing to meet you wherever you are. Cry out to Jesus' And with Jesus as our high priest, who suffered all things as written in Hebrews chapter 5, we should 'Just remember that you're not alone in your shame or your suffering' as one struggles with one's own sins.
I love too, "Communion", the lyrics of which consist of most of the few words which are spoken every Sunday, before communion. The song is very repetitive, but the few words which are semi-original, I love, and the way the song is arranged and sung is very simple but very beautiful: 'I will remember everything of old that You did for me. I won't take for granted the sacrifice that set me free. We hunger and thirst for You Lord, and Your Righteousness. We long for Your presence here Lord. Be with us again.' I love that song and the very obvious lyrics for the chorus: 'This is the body, this is the blood, broken and poured out, for all of us, and in this communion, we share in His love. This is the body, this is the blood.'
"Tunnel" which gets a lot of airplay on the radio reminds me of my dad's sister who was murdered who said much the same thing but in a different way. "It's always darkest before the dawn," she'd always say.
I do love this recording, but as usual I'm 2 years late; Third Day has a more recent CD out.
'Sometimes I think of where it is I've come from, and the things I left behind, but of all I have, what I possess, nothing can quite compare to What's in front of me, to What's in front of me'. -"Mountain of God"
A Hip Contemporary Christian Rock Band.......2007-05-13
They have done better........2007-03-28
Some typical lyrics:
1) "There's a light at the end of this tunnel for you"
2) "I will soar with the wings of eagles, I will learn to fly high above this world"
3)"They've done all they can to make it right, still its not enough"
4) "Memory warns you of the past, when it all went wrong"
5) "After all that Ive been through, now I realize that I must go through the valley to stand upon the mountain of God"
Yes, these themes are things we need to remember from time to time, but we've heard all this thousands of times before. There is nothing wrong with presenting time tested and familiar themes, but it would help if a new angle was presented so perhaps we could see a truth in a way that is more eye opening than we are used to. These lyrics are just too generic to be eye opening. Im sure these songs have brought comfort to some who have needed it, and for that the band deserves some credit. But this disc certainly wont be remembered as a creative milestone.

While he does thank you for buying the CD, & does a great rendition of "Only Daddy that'll Walk the Line." Plus, songs like "Mustang Burn" & Barbie Doll show off his talent and sarcasm much better than "Love You." Which, incidentally, HAS been a massive "Commercial radio success" So perhaps Jack would want to be careful when recording songs like "Happy Happy, Country Country, where he pretty much slams country radio and the fans who listen to it. Don't bite the hand that feeds you Jack!
Still, this CD, in my mind is just an "OK" effort. Maybe it was that mix of "Live, vs. Recorded? I don't know. It just left me feeling like it not only could have been better, it SHOULD have been better!
Oh, and someone tell CMT that if they are going to show the video for "Love You" to PLEASE show the REAL one! The woman in the viseo isn't using a baseball bat, she's using a shotgun to tear up that truck.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence. If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This collection deserves more attention than it received.......2007-02-03
One fact that I find amazing about Inxs is that this six member band stuck together from their formation in the late 1970s through Michael Hutchence's untimely death in 1997. During this period, the band would release 10 studio albums, 1 Greatest Hits album, and 1 Live album. This has allowed the band to meld together and grow professionally. Much of this is due to the fact that three band members are brothers: Andrew Farriss (Keyboards), Jon Farriss (Drums), and Tim Farriss (Guitar). The other three members also stuck tightly with the band the whole way. These members include: Hutchence (Lead Vocals), Garry Gary Beers (Bass), and Kirk Pengilly (Guitar and Sax). Hutchence - known for his long hair and theatrical performances in concert often gets the most publicity. But the remaining five members all make major contributions from a musicianship standpoint. In addition, Hutchence is not just eye candy - he has also played a key role in the songwriting.
As Inxs moved toward superstardom, there were production and songwriting contributed to this rise. Producer Chris Thomas was brought in on the "Listen Like Thieves" album and this would continue through the "X" album. During this time, the songwriting duties would also primarily become a partnership between Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence. This duo would prove to be a dynamic songwriting combination as good as any combination in music history. "Welcome to Wherever You Are" changes things from both a production and songwriting standpoint. For producing duties, Inxs brings back Mark Opitz. Opitz had produced Inxs' big breakthrough album, "Shabooh Shoobah". From a songwriting standpoint, only 7 of the original 12 tracks are written by the Farriss/Hutchence combination. The remaining songs are either solo compositions by Andrew Farriss (3 tracks), Michael Hutchence (1 Track), as well as one combination by Hutchence and Jon Farriss. I found both of these changes to be positive. Opitz has proven to be a successful producer before and once again he proves he can do the job again. I also found the mixing up of the songwriting duties a great way to keep Inxs' music fresh and vibrant.
I think Inxs' musical style can be considered an offshoot of the Punk and New-Wave movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The two distinguishing factors that give Inxs a style of their own are : 1) The infusion of Kirk Pengilly's saxophone into this punk/new-wave influenced sound; and 2) Michael Hutchence's powerful vocals really elevate the sound of the band. "Welcome to Wherever You Are" adds some additional distinguishing factors. For starters, Inxs incorporates the use of an orchestra in two of the tracks ("Baby Don't Cry" and "Men and Women" - an interesting point "Baby Don't Cry" was a Farriss solo-written song while "Men and Women" was a Hutchence solo-written song). Inxs' sound fits very well into the orchestral-style of music and I would have really liked to have seen more songs done like this. Another distinguishing factor is that Inxs shows some innovations in their sound. The most compelling example is the opening track, "Questions". For this song (which was an Andrew Farriss solo composition), we are given a Middle-Eastern flavor to the music. Another example is on "Strange Desire", we hear a near Pet Shop Boys sound on the introduction (as well as some terrific bass by Garry Gary Beers). They also demonstrate a harder-rock edge at times in songs such as "Heaven Sent", "Communication", and "All Around". They also demonstrate an R&B sound in songs such as "Not Enough Time". "Beautiful Girl" continues to demonstrate that Michael Hutchence not only has a powerful voice, but one that is an emotional sounding one. Finally, "Men and Women" shows Inxs deliver a haunting ballad - something that hasn't been found in their music before.
Perhaps the most interesting concept is incorporated by Mark Opitz himself. Opitz assembles the 12 original tracks of "Welcome to Wherever You Are" in 45+ minutes of continuous music. For Inxs' sound, this seems to work perfect. Some of the segues from song to song aren't going to be as strong as others, but for the most part this concept works very well. It is also worth noting that there are 5 "Bonus Tracks" included in the remastered version. This includes alternate takes of "Questions", "Wishing Well", "All Around", and "Heaven Sent". It also includes an unreleased track called "The Indian Song". The alternate version of "Questions" is called the "The Answer". "The Answer" is slightly longer than "Questions" and it contains alternate lyrics. For "Heaven Sent", we hear a ballad/Waltz version - much different than the harder-rock version included on the original collection.
The liner notes include a write-up by Mark Opitz who reflects on this collection. The liner notes also includes all of the songwriting and musician credits. This is a shame that this particular album didn't get the attention it so richly deserves. This is one of Inxs' best collections. It is one that I'd recommend for both long-time and new Inxs fans.
INXS on top of the world.......2007-01-04

INXS Swansong..........2006-07-05
"Welcome to Wherever You Are" is a worthy album that has aged well. It's classic INXS no matter how you listen to it. The band was veering more into experimentation in the studio but still stuck with its commercial, melodic strengths.
In listening to today's reborn INXS with JD Fortune - it probably bears the closest resemblance in sound to this album.
"Not Enough Time" is still one of my favourite INXS ballads. What's nice about it is the band attempts different styles with the first few tracks - "Taste It" "Questions" "Communication" while going back to classic INXS territory with "Baby Don't Cry" and "Beautiful Girl" and the rest of the tracks.
This re-issue with bonus tracks looks like a worthy release. Kudos to the guys for repackaging their legacy, and remembering it.
INXS Reinvent Themselves With Great Results.......2006-01-30
The Adventurous Wherever.......2005-12-17
The middle eastern flavor of "Questions" opened the disc on a unique note, and showed the band was not about to rest on their superstar laurels. There was also the ethereal quality to the ballad, "Beautiful Girl." "Welcome To Wherever You Are" spent less time kicking, or pounding, and more time on pulsing. Songs like "Wishing Well," "Communication" and "Taste It" beat along on solid foundations, dependent more on groove than force.
Not like rock was out of the picture. "Heaven Sent" was as close to an arena rock song as "Welcome" got, but "Baby Don't Cry" is just as big. The difference is in that "Baby Don't Cry" fills in its muscle with horns. INXS was obviously trying to break away from the box that their superstar status had framed them in, and they were doing their best to make an album that would set itself apart from "X" and "Kick."
Alas, the subtle charms of "Not Enough Time" and "Beautiful Girl" - and the full orchestra on the terrific "Men and Women" - were not enough to sustain the audience that looked upon INXS as a hard rock band and Michael Hutchence as an arena god. They avoided "Welcome To Wherever You Are" and jumped on board the Nirvana train, leaving INXS in a quandary. Unfortunately, it was one they never did fully recover from, as the follow-up "Full Moon Dirty Hearts" was a paint by numbers effort, one that spotlighted Michael's growing dissatisfaction with making music. "Welcome To Wherever You Are" is something of a lost album, in as much as it sounds like this was an album that INXS, flush with success and the ability to stretch out, really wanted to make.

Right out of the Vaults.......2004-07-01
The album packaging did prove that over the years the band did learn how to all dress like each other in snazzy matching outfits for photo shoots.
"Welcome to Wherever You Are," was the Fixx making "Ink," the Cars making "Door to Door," Van Halen doing "Van Halen III," you know...the beginning of the end. "Welcome to Wherever You Are," granted has enough listenable material that you won't immediately go out running to your local Hastings to try to sell it dirt cheap or stick it in the pile of garage sale recordings right next to worn copies of Air Supply, Barry Manilow, and Bread. INXS became commercial...they were tainted by success. Maybe that was more than lead singer Michael Hutchence bargained for. Fame can be a daunting thing. Commercialism alone doesn't make a band start to pump out uninspired drivel but if heads aren't on right it can lead to it. Though the collective musicians of INXS seem to be talented enough that "Welcome To Wherever You Are," doesn't delve to the drivel level. Nevertheless the band members picked up the road signs, mapped it out on Mapquest, and yep with this CD they were heading to drivel city, USA.
The album starts out interestingly enough with a Sitar-singed, "Questions." Follows it up with some hit top-40 radio play ditties in "Heaven Sent," "Taste It," and "Not Enough Time." But by the time they reach the big horns bouncy, "Baby Don't Cry," all inspiration has ran dry. "Wishing Well," has an interesting bass line, but the rest of the album is same 'ole same 'ole.
Look elsewhere if you are starting out with INXS. Shaboo Shabah or Kick might be good places to start. The band did make some good music, unfortunately too little of it can be found on "Welcome to Wherever You Are."

heaven sent.......2002-10-20
Anyway, this album was very well done, from the writing to the performance and production. The music overflows with creative ideas from the eastern feel on "questions" to the brass on "baby don't cry", and the hints of latin on "strange desire". Additionally, INXS have perfected their original style on this album. The grooves are infectious; if you're not going crazy dancing or singing along to the music, you're without a doubt tapping your feet. Of course I need to say my bit about Michael's vocals. They're irresistable! His voice simply exudes cool on this album. Every time I listen to it I go through a short Michael-envy phase. Without a doubt, the other members' passionate performances are also critical to the essence of the album. This is a brilliant piece of music that should not be overlooked.
Welcome To Wherever You Are.......2001-11-05
The album is very solid. It's a brash and daring step beyond the attractive, upbeat formula of Listen Like Thieves and Kick.
Welcome is very adventurous. It is sometimes boisterous, other times inherently erotic, often even lovely.
Questions and Heaven Sent kick off the album, and lead into Communication, one of their best songs yet.
Not Enough Time and Baby Don't Cry are both wonderful, and
All Around really rocks.
Then there's also Strange Desire, and Taste It - a couple more of my favorites.
Taste It was inspired by a freak accident that caused Michael Hutchence to lose his ability to taste.
Beautiful Girl is very beautiful -- one of their prettiest songs ever recorded.
Lead vocalist Michael Hutchence (1960-1997) did have many friends in the music industry -- including U2's Paul "BONO" Hewson. Bono actually recorded some vocals to help complete the Michael Hutchence solo album, and since Michael's death, Bono has dedicated many of his live performances to the memory of his friend, Michael Hutchence.
Rest In Peace, Michael.

George Strait is one of country music's GQ cowboys and leading male vocalists, and his first Christmas record is probably in every country holiday collection. This one won't be. Strait sounds about as engaged here as a perennial bench sitter on the hockey team. The CD mixes standards with middling originals, and Strait's puzzling choices of covers ("Jingle Bell Rock" at this stage of the game?) are only exacerbated by the likes of a story called "Noel Leon," about a guy who leaves his Christmas lights up all year round. Of course there's a sad side to the tale. You expect more from a guy who can emulate George Jones and find the writers who make even the most commercial work personable and memorable. Finally, what was he thinking when he covered "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth"? Talk about getting caught in a whiteout. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Never trust the critics.......2002-12-06
Also the material on this outing is for the most part superior to the songs on his first outing. "I Know What I Want for Christmas" is an easy going country-swing number that recalls his recent hit "Go On". "Old Time Christmas" and "Santa's On His Way" both recapture the sweet innocence of Christmas as viewed through the eyes of youth. Another reason I had steered clear of this outing was the inclusion of "All I Want for Christmas" - "uh oh" - but George presents it in a very straight forward "swing" style and it works beautifully. "Let It Snow" and "The Christmas Song" are both presented in warm arrangements and George's voice and phrasing are perfect. While there's nothing very special in the versions of "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Rudolph" presented here they are certainly listenable enough. The only track I could do without is "Noel Leon" which doesn't fit the with mood or feeling of the rest of the outing. It won't having jumping to hit the skip button but maybe another original or traditional cover might have been a better choice.
Still, all in all an excellent release from Strait and now, at budget price, a painless purchase.
