Groovy as a,,.,............2006-02-01
Such a great LP. "Cruising For Bruising" shows how, lyrically, a Polish Girl can rock out some great words without the American dialect. "Baby Your Mine" is wonderful trip down the calypso slide. "Copernicus" is a swaying wonder, you'll love the history lesson. Take it and run, but not for cover.
Basia at her best.............2005-10-14
Basia is one of those singers that we still hear, once in a while, but definitely not nearly enough. She could be thrown into the category of smooth jazz, adult contemporary or "easy listening." She is so much more than that though. Those categories don't even begin to do her justice as an artist or a musician. You really need to hear this to fully comprehend the depth, style and musicality of this beautiful, talented Polish singer.
Basia has a flair for blending the sounds of samba, pop, jazz and contemporary flavors, with her haunting vocals and tender lyrics. "Cruising For Bruising" is an cautionary, up-tempo ballad that looks at the potential for pleasure and pain in romantic relationships. It is a great first track, to get you set for more love-themed, thoughtful songs. Whether Basia is pondering her future, post-love affair ("Brand New Hope"), or falling into the arms of someone new (the wonderful, samba-inspired "Baby Your Mine"), she has us at the first note, and doesn't give us up until the last beat.
This is one of those timeless albums you have got to have. It's perfect for any occasion.
Good Upbeat Music.......2005-07-24
Thanks Steve for introducing me to this music. I still like this CD 15 years later. Basia has wonderful energy. Good dance music!
Not the Best.......2005-05-16
I love Basia, but I did not like this CD. It just did not pull me in like Time & Tide did. I was disappointed.
The whole is less than the sum of its parts.......2005-03-17
If you're an American listener, you probably will only recognize Basia for "Cruising for Bruising", which still gets occasional "easy favourites" radio airplay in the States. (She's a much bigger star in Europe than the U.S.A.) This is more bossa nova inflected jazzy pop from the Polish wunderkind.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"Copernicus" takes the old saw that 'love is the universal language' and couches it in a clever metaphor and a snappy combination of bossa nova and pop that even sees Basia throw in a brief verse in her native Polish, "Baby You're Mine" isn't powerful poetry but it's an infectious little nugget of infatuation, the swaggering "Not an Angel" is a sexy comeon, and "Take Him Back Rachel" finds Basia on the other end of the love continuum: she's the "rebound" woman, admitting that she's second banana and urging her beau's ex to give him another shot ("Ignore what people say and listen to your heart, Someone up there knows it is only your silly pride..")
LOW SPOTS:
"Reward" would be great if it were an ironic portrayal of dysfunctional love, but when Basia sings that the "reason" she suffered through a distant relationship with her parents is so that she could find a man who's "the sun the air I breathe", it's more than a trifle sad to contemplate.
BOTTOM LINE: While there are songs here that are more instantly catchy than on the debut, as a whole the album doesn't hang together as well. On this sophomore album, it seems as if Basia and cohort Danny White aren't sure if they want to be darlings of the charts or the critics.

Amazon.com essential recording
Although the late Sviatoslav Richter spent his later years concentrating on Bach, Beethoven, and Haydn, he never completely abandoned the music of his native country. His reading of Rachmaninov's most popular concerto, captured in fine late-'50s stereo, is one of the most glorious ever recorded. Richter's amazing technique is completely up to the demands of Rachmaninov's difficult writing, and he plays the heart-on-sleeve melodies with such refined intensity that they never sound sentimental. This performance is a truly amazing example of great pianism, very strongly supported by the fine orchestra and its little-known conductor. Unfortunately, the accompanying Tchaikovsky is a dud. Karajan and Richter recorded this work together as a favor to a record-company executive, but they don't seem to be in sympathy. The conductor's excessive refinement holds the pianist back, and the result is much too restrained for the music. Never mind. The Rachmaninov alone is easily worth the price of this disc. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Great performance, poor remastering.......2007-02-19
Previous reviews extoll the virtues of Richter's performance, and indeed it is magnificent. Unfortunately, the remastering of this recording did not produce a quality result. The dynamics are poor, resulting in fuzzy strings, and horns and a less than vibrant sound from Richter's piano. There is no sense of "presence". This is a valuable recording for those with two or more copies of the Rach 2, who want this one as a historic performance or for collectors of Richter. If this is your first copy and you have a decent sound system, steer clear.
Eloquence with hands of steel and a heart of fire.......2006-07-09
Richter's work has long been a benchmark in the library of piano virtuosity, but in these two selections, he has transcended normal experience. For an artist to insert himself into the world of music on such a grand scale is to take great risks, and that is exactly what he has done. I believe that at a point, Richter and the music become one and the same. It is as though he were fused to each note. The result is a performance that is both flawless and yet, warm, sonorous and full. There is nothing that he has left out. He is an artist for the ages, and we are richer for his presence at the keyboard.
A performance that will live as long as recorded music.......2006-01-19
There is nearly unanimous consensus that Richter's 1959 recording of the Rachmaninov 2nd rises to a height challenged only by the composer himself. Richter's ability to play the fastest passagework while moving from soft to loud and back again is breathtaking--speed doesn't change his control over dynamics one bit. But that's to pick out a single aspect of a performance that is by turns noble, lyrical, passionate, and poetic. One could spend the whole performance marveling just at the independence of Richter's two hands. He rescues this thrice-familiar work from its fulsome reputation. Rowicki conducts well, but the recorded sound is thin, and the Warsaw Phil. decidedly provincial. None of which matters a bit.
Reviewers here echo the Amazon critic in disparaging the Tchaikovsky First from 1963, although it is in better sound than the Rchmaninov and played better by the orchestra, too--Karajan had a special relationship with the Vienna Sym., a sorry ensemble under most conductors. I like this performance a great deal. Richter isn't highly individual--he plays for strength and dignity in the first movement, not for Horowitz's burn-down-the-house virtuosity, and in the last movement he applies restrained delicacy. Since the Tchaikovsky First is the deadest of dead horses to me, I liked hearing such thoughtful musicality. As for Richter and Karajan being on different pages, they sound together to me. Taste, what can you say? Five stars for both performances.
Idyosincratic Tchaikovsky , enigmatic Rachmaninov!.......2004-08-17
The Tchaikovsky piano concerto was approached for Richter as a imperial concert and not as a simple introspective and romantic work .
This idea is extremely remarkable since you muts notice the fact the three first symphonies are deeply imperials , epic and surrounded for the epic majesty and russian pride .
But since the four till the sixth , the conception changes completely . We see the man and his inner sorrows and his fears.
In this sense the most of the western pianist play Tchaikovsky , as the wounded man tired due his personal tragedy .
Richter turns around the clock and reveals Tchaikovsky with the same spirit that we know in his first Symphny , radian and filled with vitality and fierce.
The slow tempo does not mean a rendition but a clever statement about a transition between the youth and the mature age . Karajan in this sense did not make any special contributtion in this case . He respected Richter and knew about his special rapport for Tchaikovsky . I mean you will feel the required histamina in the last bars but as a natural consequence of the musical language and not a simple firework exercise.
In the case of Rachmaninov , Richter keeps the romantic mood , and he avoids the excesive self indulgence so typical of Rachmaninov .
The emphasis turns around another levels , such as the epic nosthalgy for the land he will never see again and obviosuly the hidden homagge to his beloved friend the hypnotist doctor Dahl who rescued him from the alcohol hell .
Rowicki was one of the best polish conductors in any age . He understood perfectly this rapture feeling and the key was simply overwhelming .
Fundamental issue in your personal collection.
POWER.......2004-05-20
Richter's performance on this cd reminds me very much of Rush's 2112 album. You are captivated from the moment you hit play, and you are taken on a journey. But by the end, you realize that every time you will pay it another visit, you will discover a whole new world of aesthetics that you had no prior perception of. Not just compositionally, but the same goes for what Richter's soul has to say. It's like getting two stories in one! This may initially sound ironic, given that his devilishly careful, almost brooding pacing, finds many listeners opting for Ashkenazy's spin. However, for me, the more thoughtful ... a performance is, the more intricacies there are to be found. When you listen to Rush, you barely get anything from the first listen... but you just KNOW that there IS an eternity of SOMETHING to be gathered, if you listen over and over again. So, in either case, you become strangely obsessed and fixated, drawn to listen just one more time. I suppose to really go out there, I will compare Richter to an artistic bag of potato chips. You must just keep going. That's not to say you get nothing from the first listen! Indeed, those familiar with the concerto and/or Richter will be blown away, regardless. But with every chord of the 1st movement of the Rach 2nd, you sense a world of unspoken stories, meaning, content! Warning, though - if you don't like being analytical, this isn't the recording for you. People complain of orchestral faults, injections of political issues, etc. etc.... but what captivates me every time I listen to Richter, is how superb he is at upping the ante for the utopian combination of brains and emotion. ... The same is to be said for the Tchaikovsky. Whatever stressors surround the nature of the recording, a true musician puts it all aside (OR uses it as fuel to the fire!) and performs a miracle at the piano. If you are openminded, buy this - you won't be disappointed. Rather,... you'll become addicted.

These are stunning, unique works, stamped with Szymanowski's unusual and exotic sound world. His textures can be eerie and his use of dynamics radical. There is a unique glistening quality to the orchestration as well as the solos, which tend to linger in the violin's upper reaches. The music yearns in a manner that can only be called rapturous and it is impossible to listen and remain unaffected. Both concerti are structured in single movements with lengthy, wild cadenzas (particularly so for the second concerto) about half way through. In the first, the heady cadenza leads into a beautiful, gentle finale. The second concerto seems the warmer, more sensual work. Szymanowski drew from the folk music of the Goral Mountains. The cadenza here, three minutes in length and wonderfully virtuosic, moves directly into a thumping, energetic section with brass fanfares. The Nocturne and Tarantella that ends the CD occasionally feels like it comes from another composer: the Nocturne features some Debussy-like impressionism, interrupted by castanets and Spanish sounds, and the Tarantella is a rambunctious piece of street music. Violinist Ilya Kaler is more than up to the task, playing with big, expressive tone when needed and able to reach the lightest, high pianissimi asked for in the cadenza of the first concerto. Antoni Wit gets splendid playing from the Warsaw Philharmonic, and the sonics capture all of Szymanowski's dynamic levels and transluscent orchestration. This is a terrific CD. --Robert Levine

Classic Movie Pieces.......2003-10-04
I am a pinaist, and several of thses pieces find themselve in my repertoire, and by hearing them on this cd, one is able to truly appreciate the composition and performance of these songs, which are not very popular nowadays. A great collection that I highly recommend to all musicians and music lovers.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.......2003-02-07
If you like light works for piano and orchestra, this is the BEST I have heard. With the popularity of movie themes in this genre, this CD will not disappoint you. There are some great undiscovered gems on this CD. Every pianist should have this to 'expand their horizons'. Simply the best!

Probably Decca's best "Adagios" set.......2006-07-26
I say "probably," since it's hard to outdo its "Beethoven Adagios" set. I've only bought a few of these "Adagios" sets because, looking over the track listings of so many, there's just so much overlap. Here, you get the best single collection of the bunch. Here, I was introduced to Addinsell's "Warsaw Concerto," and for that alone it was worth the price. But let's not forget a significant number of other gorgeous classic adagios: Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto (used in a gorgeous film, "Picnic at Hanging Rock"), Bach's "Air on a G String," Mahler's Adaghietto from Symphony no. 5, some obligatory Mozart, the Barber adagio, Debussy's Claire de lune, and - oh lovely! - Schubert's String Quintet in C. Then there are much-appreciated entries (Cinema Paradiso, Gabriel's Oboe) from a personal favorite composer, Ennio Morricone, one of the actual official film composers (as distinct from long-dead composers whose music was used in film) used for this collection, along with a couple from another personal favorite, John Barry. (You'd really need to get Barry's own set of "adagios," titled "Moviola," to get his best, e.g., the title theme to "Out of Africa" and to "Somewhere in Time." For Morricone, the master of the romantic adagio in the past century, go with "Itinerary of a Genius" or individual soundtracks like "Legend of 1900," "Lolita," "Once Upon a Time in America," "Once Upon a Time in the West," and others.)
A couple drawbacks to this set: (1) The adagio from Rachmaninov's 2nd is truncated to a mere 4 minutes. For this, one is well advised to purchase a CD with the entire concerto, or get a full version of just the adagio elsewhere (Decca does include a full version on its "Romantic Adagios" collection). (2) So much from so many composers is included, that there is too little room for more Beethoven. I'd prefer the adagio from the "Pathetique" sonata to the "Moonlight" one which was included here. For Beethoven adagios, you need the "Beethoven Adagios" set as an accompaniment (where you get, among other things, adagios for the op. 130 string quartet, the 6th symphony, the violin concerto, piano concerto no. 3, the 7th symphony, and the romance for violin no. 2, op. 50). If you're a fan of Mozart music often used in the movies, there's the "Mozart Adagios" set and/or the "Amadeus" soundtrack.
I'm a "purist" as to a few works; I'd rather hear the entirety of the "Emperor" concerto than merely the adagio, for instance. In plenty of other cases, an adagio movement is heard just fine as a stand-alone work; plenty of the most beautiful music is used for adagio movements, as these sets make clear enough.
One of the best CDs you'll ever own.......2003-03-23
This is an excellent selection of music. I listen to it every chance I get. It is great just to put in your CD player on "repeat" and allow it to soothe and inspire you for a few hours, for an evening, or an for entire day.
One reason I chose it was that I was looking for music that could simply be a nice background noise for when I'm working on things that require reading and concentration. I wanted music that would not be a distraction, and this does a good job. It is also great to listen to when doing almost anything, like even cleaning the house or doing laundry. I will admit though, that listening to the selection from Swan Lake might make you want to dance around the living room.
Also, besides the obvious ones that everybody knows (Beethoven's 5th, or Canon in D, etc.) I do not know enough to distinguish specific songs from their composers, which is why I was hesitant to buy a classical CD soley of one artist because once I got it I may not have liked it or been familiar with any of the songs. That is why I picked Movie Adagios because I knew it would be a selection of some of the best classical music from the movies, which it is.
Sublime!.......2002-09-08
Of course, I'm nuts for classical music and classic movies, so this compilation of music featured in some of the most famous movies ever made is an absolutely ideal CD.
Filmmakers have been raiding the classical music files since the days of the silents in order to heighten the mood of a scene and provide a greater emotional impact. Barber's Adagio for Strings has been used not only in "Platoon", as this CD lists, but also in "The Elephant Man". While there's only a small snippet of Rachmininoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 here, it's worth remembering that the entire piece is used throughout the magnificent "Brief Encounter" to heighten the impact of the romance. Mozart's Trio (Cosi fan tutte) was brilliantly used in "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" to comment on a complex romantic triangle.
There are also 5 pieces written directly for the screen, two by Ennio Morricone (the haunting Gabriel's Oboe from "The Mission" and the exquisite Nuovo Cinema Paradiso from "Cinema Paradiso"), two by John Barry (a lovely version of We Have All the Time in the World from the James Bond classic "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and the elegiac John Dunbar Theme from "Dances With Wolves") and one by Michael Nyman (The heart asks pleasure first from "The Piano").
I love this CD, to relax with, to read with, and just immerse myself in the spectacular sounds of genius.
GREAT MUSIC.......2001-12-03
This is a great classical piece for the lovers of classical, as well as the ones who may hate it. These Adagios CDs get beter and better each time there is a new release. I must warn you there some good as well as some bad ones. There is a certain Adagio flavor for everyones. At the present I have others, but the ones I truly enjoy are Violin Adagios, The Piano Adagios and this one. This compilation is great for reading. Furthermore this CD can be great evening music... for sleeping.
Those of you who have not got on board with the ADAGIOS, please get on board the next time you go to your favorite music store. You may be surprised at how you have enriched yourselves with great music for your listening pleasure.

Reading about Paganini.......2007-01-25
Fans of Paganini should read Julian Livingston's novel, Paganini-The Vampire Career. In this book, P.T. Barnum has sent Henry Feder to Europe to seek out a new violinist, Nicolaties, more than 40 years after Paganini died without last rites. Nicolaties looks, performs, behaves like Paganini. Could it be him? Lots of technical references to music, as Mr. Livingston is a musician and has written 2 operas. A very interesting book for musicians, vampire lovers, and macabre 19th century European tales.
Unexpected Delights.......2001-03-16
I bought this CD after hearing of the legend of Paganini - the devil on his shoulder, the playing that made people faint, the Marfan-syndrome affected joints that allowed impossible finger contortions, the immense crowds that adored him, as they did Liszt at the piano. What I expected was to hear impossible violin artistry at work, which was definitely fulfilled. What I did not expect, however, were the marvelous interludes between the violin solos. Paganini's concerti are unlike those of Beethoven and Brahms, as the violin completely dominates the attention. But the power of the full orchestra was unexpected. These are true violin showpieces, to be certain, but they are also marvelous bits of music - when the full orchestra blasts in you can't help but smile.
An unearthly hand guides his bow.......2000-08-13
"The Devil guides his bow " was what audiences said when they heard the fast fingers of Nicolo Paganini as he performed his various Caprices and Concertos. This was not an insult. He could play with demonic speed and still maintain a great sound. He is first and foremost a violinist, a superb one. Paganini's music is also brilliant and elegant sounding. In his time, audiences were moved to tears by his slower violin movements. This proves the emotional factor is present in his music, making him a Romantic composer and nevertheless a Classical composer. Stradivari violins were being made at this time. It was a great period in music and Paganini was a legend. I highly recommend this cd containing his most gorgeous works.
Excellent Introductory set of Paganini.......2000-01-14
This is a fine compilation. Not only it includes better compositions by Paganini, it also includes some of the best recorded performance of the works as well. As a musicological interest, Grumiaux and Szerying gave revival performances of no.3 and 4. The approaches the three violinists take are interesting to note as well. Szeryng and Grumiaux's playing emphasize the lyrical, aristocratic quality, whereas Gitlis emphasizes the demonic quality. And both approaches work splendidly. This set will provide an excellent introduction for people who does not know the compositions by Paganini, and will provide great pleasure for those who knows the music but has not heard them performed by these three wonderful violinists. Strongly recommended.
Fine compilation of Paganini.......1999-12-01
This is a fine collection of Paganini. Szeryng and Grumiaux gave the modern premieres for third and fourth concertos, respectively. Grumiaux's aristocratic performance of the fourth concerto has rarely been matched. In his performance, musicianship, technique and taste are balanced in an incomparable perfection. Szeryng's noble, distinguished performance of the third concerto has also very few equals. His restrained lyricism is particularly effective in the aria-like 2nd movement. As a pleasant surprise, Szeryng's performance has a great deal of charm as well (which is not always the case). Then as a contrast, this set has a hair-raisingly demonic performance of the second concerto by under-rated Ivry Gitlis. Gitlis's approach is 180 degree opposite from lyrical Grumiaux and Szeryng. Gitlis plays the concerto as if he is an personification of the devil himself, with gut-shattering vibrato and fearless abandan. Gitlis' fine performances of 3 caprices matches in every way with Heifetz's. The other recordings in this set are also distinguished, but not quite in the same level as the above mentioned. Grumiaux's lyrical performance of the first concerto sounds somewhat pale compared to young Yehudi Menuhin's 1934 performance, and so as his recording of two variations (Ricci plays a better Le Streghe, and I don't understand why Philips did not use Gitlis' version of I palpiti, which is much better). Marrinar's competent but hardly exciting perpetuo mobile (compare with Toscanini's recording!) could have been substituted with several more of Gitlis' Paganini short pieces he recorded during the 1960's on Philips. But this compilation is definitely worth getting for the concertos nos.2, 3 & 4. And the price is good too!

One word--LIFESAVER.......2005-10-04
I live in a very noisy dormatory and often have trouble falling asleep. I've found that this disc, with its relaxing pieces, is able to calm me enough that I can get a decent amount of rest each night.
I'm not saying the songs on here are boring, though. They are well-performed. Many of them were familiar to me before I first played this disc, others were not. I am very diverse in my musical tastes and appreciate this music. However, the relaxation value one gets from a CD like this one is much more than one could expect from a band like Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, The Police, or Crash Test Dummies to name a few.
Even if you don't live in a noisy dorm this is a good CD to relax to. It's also good dinner music and is perfect for when that special sweetie is in your car with you en route to a five star restaraunt. (Hopefully it comes on cassette so I can play it in my car, too!)
Richard Clayderman also has put out numerous other albums. One that I have been unable to find in CD but have on LP record is "A Romantic Christmas", which includes many great piano arrangments of popular Christmas songs including arguably the best version of "Silver Bells" I've ever heard, including all the ones with vocals that have passed through my ears over my lifetime.
Richard Clayderman Admiration Society.......2005-08-16
Richard Clayderman first came to my attention in the early 1970's when I used to spend a lot of time in Europe on business. He has a very distinctive piano style when playing either classical or popular. His backup band for popular music, including excellent drums, tuba, violins and more, is very good.
This particular album, if you like classical music played with a flair, is excellent; so good, in fact, that I am buying additional copies for special people.
And, yes, I am well over the age of 13.
Not THAT bad,but..........2005-05-23
Let's just say that even if I really dislike Clayderman,I have never underated his pianistic talents.I borrowed this CD from a friend and was surprised that the pianist famous with performances of mundane pop songs is able to fit into the demands of some really serious classical masterpieces such as the Tchai 1 or the Rach 2.However,JUST AS I PREDICTED,Clayderman would not play these masterpieces in their entirety. For a serious classical music fan, excerpts would never be of much value. It would be really stupid to compare Clayderman's performance of the great concertos with the other 'greats' such as Cliburn,Zimerman or Argerich, but some passages in Clayderman's performance really seem cheesy to me.This is an album which might be an option for beginners of classical music. But a 'professional' classical music fan really needs much more than any performance of a work.
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1.......2002-11-16
I am --------, and I have played Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. An expressive work which requires great passions, Clayderman has often been too loud, breaking the melodious balance between the orchestra and the piano. I was tuned off already by the first few chords, which were struck too loudly. There also lacks a element of surprise and Russian animosity in this recording, which Jorge Bolet and Evgeny Kissin both capture in their recordings with Dutoit and Karajan, respectively.
The Peak Of Romantic Classics.......2002-01-11
While Richard Clayderman is not well known in the USA, his work is commonplace in South Africa and Europe. I enjoyed the original LP version of this CD as a 8 year old and through the wonders of e-commerce have been able to track the CD down. I loved his rendition of Beethoven's work so much that I used the music for the bridal march at my wedding.Definately worth the ten bucks if you're a Romantic Classic nut.

Amazon.com essential recording
Sviatoslov Richter was a friend of the composer, and he played all of this music in Prokofiev's presence. His performances have since acquired almost cult status among pianists--a reputation they richly deserve. The Fifth Piano Concerto is a pithy, technically difficult work in five short movements, which Richter plays as though he had composed them himself. The Eighth Sonata, by contrast, was composed during the Second World War, and the contrast between simple lyricism and horrifying violence leaves no doubt whatsoever as to what the composer was attempting to describe. These mid-price reissues sound better than ever, and artistically speaking, they are priceless. --David Hurwitz

Don't get me wrong these performances, esp. the ones forom the keyboard have all of the energy, stength and heart that you would expect from Richter. I can not find one fault with his playing here. It is the recording itself that I have an issue with. The recording balance in the concerto is way off. The piano is always (incorrectly) projected as being louder than the orchestra. If you've ever been to a paiano concerto concert, you know that this is simply not true. Therefore, I give it 4 stars.
Prokofiev and Richter's pianistic magic.......2002-11-23
Prokofiev considered his 5th Piano Concerto to be unjustly neglected at the expense of his ever-popular 3rd. On the evidence of this September 1958 recording, he was right! Richter and the Warsaw National Philharmonic are flawless and sparkling with the spirit of Prokofiev, a light, urbane wit seldom heard since Mozart. The 8th Sonata is another spirit entirely, perhaps Prokofiev's most profound and complex work. There are gentle passages following turbulence and darkness that are of the utmost beauty, and Richter's playing is a marvel.
Other than his 2nd Symphony, Prokofiev's modernist impulse is clearest in his works for piano. The 7th and 8th Sonatas especially are masterworks of the early 20th century, and Richter's is THE 8th!
Definitive Eighth.......1999-12-25
I usually have in mind a list of the ten greatest piano recordings of all time. Luckily, having no particular label affiliation, I am compelled to make my choices solely by personal preference, Millenial Collections notwithstanding. The Fifth Concerto is rarely if ever, played. Richter's version is superb. But the Eighth Sonata receives the most excruciatingly beautiful performance. The lyricism, drama, colour are all qualities in this performance that have remained with me for decades. An essential recording for anyone who loves the piano.

Amazon.com essential recording
If you want to judge a pianist's versatility, listen to his or her recording of the Schumann Piano Concerto. It requires virtually everything a pianist should have to offer: poetry, virtuosity, expansive expression alternating with poised restraint. What a glorious test piece this is. Richter, who was famous for his Schumann playing, passes every test here. His meltingly beautiful delivery of Schumann's melodies touches the heart, and his execution of the most difficult passages is so smooth and effortless that it never calls a bit of attention to itself. In this piece and the Introduction and Allegro, the excellent orchestra also covers itself with glory. The solo pieces are no less wonderful. The way Richter plays the difficult Toccata is almost scary in its combination of power and velocity. The Forest Scenes is a slightly older recording (1956) than the others (1958), but it still sounds lovely. Catch Richter's whirlwind playing of "Traumes-Wirren" and you'll understand right away why other pianists had such respect for his technique. Listen to his "Prophet Bird" and he'll touch your heart. --Leslie Gerber

Robert Schumann piano Sviatoslav Richter.......2007-03-08
Dexterity of Richter is world class . As a classical pianist I was disappointed with the frequency response of the recording. Although probably digitized still a lot of the frequencies were missing. If I had to choose again I would select a relatively recent performance .
Richter plays Schumann.......2005-12-05
All of us who admire the supreme interpretative status of Sviatoslav Richter know about his variable temperament. That personal feature permeated every piece he played in his fruitful career. The Piano Concerto has been played for so many pianists in the most different approach. It is a piece of irresistible romantic ethos, who can deny it? .
This version remained indeed, as one the most prominent in the market for years; but there were many more: Lipatti, Michelangeli, Rubinstein, Cortot ,Van Cliburn, Yves Nat among many others, we should wait until the most elegant, expressive, eloquent and committed performance ever recorded : Ivan Moravec with the Czech Philharmonic conducted by Vaclav Neumann (a very hard to find CD).
That fact established more than just a line; a true frontier, a reference pattern, very hard to surpass until this date. Richter 's performance is something inexpressive, he could make a major and best performance. But despite of it, remains among the ten best available and trustable versions.
The rest of the CD is absolutely perfect .I don't know about any other version of Introduction and Allegro capable to match with it. His Novelette is very expressive and sensitive with the only exception of the monumental version of Wilhelm Kempff and one register of Emil Gilels.
The Toccata is simply memorable; there are , however two very remarkable version: Martha Argerich and Vladimir Horowitz. The Waldzsenen Op. 82 is a a very genuine jewel.
Go for this, keeping in mind there are better options respect the piano Concerto.
& I thought Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto #1 was my favorite!.......2004-11-04
That is...until I heard the first few notes of this Schumann concerto. I was literally in tears the first 50 times I listened to the 1st movement of this concerto. Personally I'm not a big fan of Schumann's work, but this is the absolute best piano concerto, and it is a "must buy" for any piano lover. This recording also substantiated my love for Richter's playing.
schumann's chamber concerto.......2003-07-17
as the other reviews have said, this is a remarkable performance. the ensemble playing is crisp without being rigid, and the players are recorded with the clarity of a chamber orchestra: all the instrumental soloists are distinguished and the balance with the soloist is perfect. richter creates a subtle range of moods within the overall perspective of each movement -- hard to do in a concerto role, as the orchestra must contribute to the effect -- though his dynamic contrasts are not as extreme as typical. the cumulative effect is apollonian, magisterial, and timeless. the solo pieces are marvelous technical and interpretive displays as well.
Best of the best.......2002-09-20
This recording of Schumann's concerto is simply the best: the orchestra is very good (despite reviews to the contrary), the soloist-orchestra interplay is superb, and Richter's playing is divine.
If you listen to this recording repeatedly, and then compare it with other good or very good recordings (Lipatti, Serkin, Moravec, Staier), you'll notice the differences: you will be aware how these latter pianists search for the correct interpretation of certain passages, and often they succeed. You'll be also aware, however, that Richter does not interpret. He simply plays it the way Schumann must have intended the work, i.e. the way it has to be played. It's not a matter of technique - in this respect, many(but not too many) pianists are as good as Richter. It's just like Schumann's spirit has penetrated Richter's nervous system and guides his fingers.
When you're not listening to the concerto for a long time, and then try to "play" it in your head, you will reckognize that it "sounds" like the Richter-Rowicki recording. And you will notice flaws in all other recordings.
Summarized: Best recording of Richter, best recording of Schumann's piano concerto, and my all-time favorite recording.

Album Details
The influential UK post-punk outfit Joy Division used the name Warsaw for a time during the 1970's, prior to encountering a legal wrangle with another group of punks called Warsaw Pakt. This 1999 issue was largely recorded in May of 1978, shortly before they had to adopt their new moniker and it was co-produced & engineered by Brian Auger. The bonus tracks are a five-track demo recorded in 1977.

takes me back..........2007-03-31
This was a great find - it takes me back to those angst filled teenage years. As a major Joy Division fan, I was thrilled to get this CD and get a feel for their evolution as a band. Get New Order - 316 if you want to hear an early New Order still sounding like Joy Division.
the joy division demos.......2007-02-20
I have always been a huge fan of all Joy Division derivitives, including New Order, Monaco, and Revenge. This album is the boys from Joy Division before the name change. If you thought JD was raw and stark, try this one on for size. They polished a few of the songs off for later re-release, but this great album captures the pure essence of the band, with Ian is all his glory.
I agree with Daniel - Joy Division at their rawest and best.......2006-03-15
Joy Division was a rock band. That comes through on this album. The sound is raw as is the recording but for me it's the best one, the least compromised one the most rebellious one. Great band never to return. One of those inexplicable "clicked".
Buy it, Love it, Be it.......2005-12-12
I owned this album for two decades as a bootleg tape that got passed around the Berkeley punk scene in the early eighties, and it never failed to become the favorite music of anyone I turned on to it. Joy Division always seems to sound better (to me) at their rawest, and the lower sound quality adds an edge of doom not found on the sanctioned version (of course this could just be that it reminds me of scratchy records). Either way, if you're a fan of "Closer" or New Order, I'm pretty sure you won't dig this. If you were immediately hypnotized by "Unknown Pleasures" like I was at fifteen, this is essential.
5 stars for JD fans; this stuff ROCKS!.......2005-08-17
This is great for many reasons:
1) It's a good chance to hear the band as it just started to shed its early punk sound and become much darker-sounding. Its also a chance to hear them without any fancy Martin Hannett production trickery.
2) It's a remarkable document of just how much Ian's voice changed in a very short time. This is a snarling, snotty sounding, angry young man at the mic - nothing to even hint that in two years he'd be crooning like a despondent Frank Sinatra on songs like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Heart And Soul". Listen to "Walked in Line" on this album and compare it to the version from "Still." Its hard to believe they were only done a year apart.
3) It's got a couple of what i feel are the best versions of Joy Division songs: "Shadowplay," "No Love Lost," "Leaders of Men," and "Novelty" all sound better here, even in their somewhat rough recordings, than any other version I know of.
4) Only 3 of the 11 songs here are included on the box set.
5) For sheer comic value, you have to love the last five songs - these are the earliest, rawest recordings of Joy Division. Sometimes I just crack up listening to these incredibly primitive cuts - "You're No Good For Me" could have been done by any number of booze-soaked louts. But even as early as July '77 Ian's lyrics were already chilling: "Human beings are dangerous and they call me in the dark" (At A Later Date), for example. Plus you get the immortal "Warsaww!!!" howl at the beginning of "Gutz."
This is a very good "punk" album and a very interesting Joy Division album. Highly recommended.
