Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
Pop fans rejoice: Here's yet another delightful concept album from a member of the Elephant Six family, Of Montreal, who actually hail from Athens, Georgia. Of Montreal are more like third cousins to the E6 clan; their sound is cohesively pop oriented and distinctively quaint. The songs are bouncy, keyboard- and vocal-driven gems that collapse barbershop harmonies and well-enunciated, Tin Pan Alley vocalizations with Anglo mid-'60s pop (especially that of the ever-popular Kinks). The lyrics on Of Montreal's third full-length weave an intricate story in childrens-book logic, with invisible trees, a miniature philosopher, and a cast of hundreds. The words from the buoyant "Fun Loving Nun" (whose chorus appears to have been sung by the mice from Babe) can be seen as The Gay Parade's moral: "Some of us get covered up by the world, become bitter from our loneliness and forget our dreams." --Mike McGonigal

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

4 out of 5 stars Of Montreal - Not for everyone (but still great).......2006-12-23

Ok first off, most people aren't going to like this stuff. None of my friends do, that's for sure. Perhaps the main reason for this is the childish nature of the music. Lots of the lyrics and sounds (including vocals) seem like they were made by a bunch of kids. At least at first glance. The sheer amount of silly energy they have can be really overwhelming, and I can totally understand how it can turn some folks off. Then again, if you give it a chance, you might discover that the songs are actually really awesome and enjoyable. To me, the energy and the enthusiastic philosophy that shines through is awfully refreshing and pleasant. Anyways, this is one of my favorite albums, but Im only giving it 4 stars because NOT EVERYONE SHOULD GET IT!!!! make sure you listen to the sound clips first :)

1 out of 5 stars Maybe the worst record I have ever heard.......2006-06-04

This record is awful. I haven't been this burned by gushing amazon reviews and recommendations since I bought Jellyfish's Spilt Milk. For years I thought that was the worst pop album ever made. It's not. This one is.

First and foremost, the comparisons other reviews are making with Brian Wilson and/or Paul McCartney are ridiculous. I'm pretty sure the 'lost' Smile sessions didn't involve the Beach Boys playing kazoos and a circus organ while an Alvin and the Chipmunks impersonator sang lyrics like these:
Gaily gaily glee
gaily glee gaily gaily glee
Green glass fish glide
cream colored glass
Umi ni ukande means floating on the sea
Me and my pussycat floating on the sea

After I listened to this, I told the missus, "Think of the lamest, sappiest, written-in-5 seconds repetitious Paul McCartney song you can think of. Now replace the musicians and instruments with a bunch of kids slamming around junk you'd find in a garage. Put the out of tune singer in a helium chamber, mix it all together on a tape recorder and not in a studio, and you have this record."

I am not kidding. The liner notes credit four (4!) people with 'jumping on furnace'. Granted, two of these are 'holding hands' while doing the jumping and another is 'woo-wooing' so I should probably give them some slack as they may have been distracted during the recording lending to the less than perfect results heard on this album.

The Kinks did a great job capturing slice of life with Face to Face, Village Green Preservation Society and Muswell Hillbillies and the aforementioned Paul McCartney does it better even on his lamest, sappiest, written-in-5 seconds repetitious songs. Just because this is an album with songs about ordinary people doesn't automatically qualify it to be ranked at the level of The Kinks or McCartney (or Springsteen or Westerberg or Reed, etc. etc.)

As a concept it falls completely flat. In terms of believable characters and a thematic whole, Dream Theatre, Styx, Jethro Tull, ELO and Rush actually succeeded better back in the 1980's than this thing does (even if the musical genre is a complete opposite).

Lastly let's mention the title itself - try as these self-important folks might, a ridiculous sounding band name with no discernable musical ability being put out on a third rate label isn't going to bring enlightentment to the masses about the word 'gay'. Especially when coupled with 'parade'.

I had to backtrack to figure out why amazon recommeded this album highly to me. What I've found is that my sometimes quirky pop tastes (Neutral Milk Hotel, Flaming Lips, Starlight Mints and Super Furry Animals to name a few) are responsible. Looks like I have a lot of re-rating to do.

If you're looking for pop experimentation and haven't yet run throught the catalogs of those bands I mentioned in the last paragraph or those of Radiohead, Wilco, Spoon, Yo La Tengo, Galaxie 500, The Pixies, Velvet Underground, and Pavement go do that first.

If you need to hear the legacy of Brian Wilson in modern music look no further than the Wondermints. Wilson even tapped this band to back him up on tour. Actual instruments, in tune singing and quality production make up their records.

Every single thing I've heard by every other band I have mentioned in this review (and that includes those space themed rock opera albums from the 80's as well as the horrible Jellyfish record) is better than Of Montreal's The Gay Parade.

Quite frankly, every other thing I've ever heard, including listening to the missus sing snippets of Green Day songs while she does the dishes, is as well. Stay Away.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning album with a lot of (successful) experimentation........2005-05-22

The first few times you listen to this album, it's hard not to compare it to some of the psychadelic/pop bands of the 60's. This in itself makes it a good album from the get go. However, after repeated listens, you start to realize and hear all of the concepts and experimentation behind the songs that make just about all of them great. Some of the highlights include "Old Familiar Way", "Fun Loving Nun", "Tulip Baroo", "The Autobiographical Grandpa", and "Advice From A Divorced Gentleman." They're all great songs.

Of course, I like ALL the songs (I did give it a PERFECT score after all). "Nickee Coco" is a stunning fairy tale-esque story told half in dialogue and half through singing. It makes the song hard to sing to, but a pleasure to listen to (it's also a bit humorous at times: listen for a part about an owl).

"My Favorite Boxer" is a nice guitar based pop tune about a boy's favorite boxer. What makes it so great is the sudden tempo changes, along with the beautiful harmonies.

"The March of the Gay Parade" (Kevin Barnes is trying to disregard the common misconceptions about the word) is a very experimental piece with very high pitched voices squeeking out the melody while fuzz and static are present in the background. It's weirdness makes it very fun to listen to, especially when Barnes finally begins to sing near the end (with a muffled voice echoing his own in the background).

All in all, it's the way the pop tunes, the concept of a character's story in every song, and the experimentation with instruments come together that makes this album so great. Kevin Barnes, along with everyone who helped him, has great talent for not only creating pop, but also molding his songs into something more than the term can describe. He combined 60's experimentation with 90's sensibilities. Let it be said, however, his latest works took a mighty turn away from this approach, making "The Gay Parade" all the more important. it's the pinnacle of Kevin Barnes' career, and although he has made some decent albums lately, he never catches the humor and simple charm that he does with "The Gay Parade" (with the exception of "Coquelicot"). A must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Come join the "Parade".......2005-01-21

Of Montreal has built a career on exuberant, sweet concept albums that bounce with life and love. "The Gay Parade" is a snapshot of them at their best -- it has the strangeness of "Cocquelicot," but is more accessable. These songs cheery oddball pop, but it sounds so uncalculated that it never quite sounds twee.

The acoustic/piano-ballad "Old Familiar Way" starts off the album, but it mostly focuses on how "It's amazing the wonders you can find/Just by stepping outside." Only at the end does Kevin Barnes greet listeners with "Welcome to the Gay Parade!" The album then switches to a bunch of songs about the glorious people, such as the bouncy dancey "Fun-Loving Nun," singsong "Tulip Baroo," and "The Miniature Philosopher."

While describing boxers, grandfathers and stuttering organ grinders, Barnes and Co. don't stray away from their typical little sweet songs: there's a carnival sound to "March of the Gay Parade," a goofy little sweet song. Elsewhere Barnes sings eagerly about the "Domestic Life," longs for special friends, and chronicles the story of Niki Coco, before finally bidding farewell in "The Gay Parade Outro."

The entire album more or less revolves around the Gay Parade, and how much happier the people in it (and near it) are. The general feeling is that it's not so much a real gathering as a state of mind -- enjoying the little things, "making friends with trees and animals," and seeing the magic of the world.

The songs rely heavily on Barnes' acoustic guitar, and the sweet piano pop that comes into the intro and outro. Little chimes and psychedelic swooshes give it an even more whimsical feel. And an electric organ gives a sort of dancey fun feel to "Fun Loving Nun," to the point where it's hard to notice Barnes' weird lyrics.

Kevin Barnes has that sort of likably offbeat voice that really sounds good in oddball pop. Sort of like Jeff Mangum, but a bit less nasal. And the songwriting is either goofy ("I'd be a yellow feathered loon for you baby/Be a German shepherd on the moon for you baby") or brilliant ("He would suddenly appear at Meg's door/He'd rent a mariachi band and respectfully demand/His dear Meg to take his hand/And to be his forever more"). You make the call -- often they're both.

Somehow the most enjoyable part of the whole thing is where where Barnes solemnly informs us, "Now that you know the way/And perhaps someday/You'll be able to stay with us/Forever inside the gay parade." In other words, hit repeat.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazin, one of the best themed albums ever..........2004-07-08

When I first heard Gay Parade I was a bit unsure what to think. They were songs that I quite enjoyed immediately (My Favorite Boxer, Old Familiar Way) and some that made me feel like pushing the Skip Track button (The March of the Gay Parade). The second time I started to enjoy every song more and more, until now, where I love every song on this album completely. The mixture of simple and complex songs, the voice of Kevin Barnes, the theme, everything, it's all pure musical gold.

This album isn't for everyone, it definitely has a children story like quality in many places, but don't let it bother you. If you can learn to get to used to such a theme, it'll make you appreciate this musical masterpiece even more.

5 out of 5 stars Still singin' those mountain ballads after all these years.......2006-12-05

Country music fans today, just listen to the music and enjoy it for what it is, but did we ever really think about the starts of country music? Who started it? What kind of songs did they sing? Were they any good? Did their children follow in their footsteps and were they sucessful?
So many questions!! This CD is the answer. The first family of country music was the Carter Family, A.P., Sara, and Maybelle of Clinch Mountain, VA. But they were much more than mountain hilbillies who liked to party on friday nights. They wrote songs about lost love, the place they knew and loved, and most of all, just fun songs.
We start off with the legendary. "Keep on the Sunny Side," the Carter's theme song. This song is basically about how if we just look on the bright side of things, they aren't so bad after all. "Storms and clouds will in time pass away, and the sun again will shine, bright and clear."
Hey June Carter fans? Did you know where "Wildwood Flower" came from? It was from the good ol' Carter Family! Actually, it was one of their first hits, probably the most reknown carter family song in the world. About lost love, it's a song you'll want to sing 24/7!
"Worried Man Blues," is my very favorite Carter Family song. It has a catchy tune, and a good beat. The song is about a man who is sentenced to go to prison, but he has no idea what he's done. Filled with fun and laughter, this will become and family favorite.
"My Clinch Mountain Home," tells you alot about the Carter's backaround history. It reflects the carter's lives from "Ole Virginny."
"Foggy Mountain Top," is a great song. It features Sara's yodeling, and Maybelle's great guitar pickin'. This song, like "My Clinch Mountain Home", secretly shares backaround information about life as a Carter as well.
Ah, "Single Girl, Married Girl," the Carter's first hit, and undoubtfully their most sucessful. This is a solo for Sara, and also a solo for her autoharp.
In "My Old Cottage Home," A.P. does most of the singing, which is rare since he usually only did backup. Very similar to "My Clinch Mountain Home," but also very different. It's one of my favorites, so yuo will proabaly liek it too.
"The Valley of Shanandoah," is a very sad song. It tells a story about how a man fell in love with a beautiful girl in the past summer and promises to return to her next year so they can be married. Sadly, when the man returns, he finds that his true love had passed away into the great kingdom above. Teh song may be sad, but it capture your heart.
"Chewing Gum," is a really fun song to sing, and it really helps past the tiem away. A song that Sara wrote when she was a child, "Chewing Gum," features many funny lines that will make you laugh out loud as if you were watching Hee-Haw!
If you buy this CD, it's liek hearing the Carter's story through music. It's truly any country msuic fan's treasure. Be sure to read my other revies for June Carter Cash's "Press On", "Wildwood Flower", "Keep on teh Sunyn Side: Her life in Music, and "Live Recordings from the Lousiana Hayride."

4 out of 5 stars A tribute which rivals the masters.......1999-07-20

The Comedian Harmonists were a German a capella group who specialised in mimicking instruments with their voices, and did so with such grace and style in the thirties that their cover verions rivalled the originals...at least in their home market. Because most of them were Jewish, they fled to the USA, where five of them provided the voices to the Seven Dwarfs in Disney's "Snow White"...the remaining two refused to leave (or returned to) Germany where they met the inevitable fate. The Kings Singers recorded this tribute in the seventies (I think) and apparently had the remaining mebers of the group in tears when they heard it. If you've ever heard the Harmonists in their original lo-fi version, this is a must in hi-fi. Their version of Tea for Two is impeccable, and the Wochenend und Sonnenschein is a gem. Get it if you're a fan of the original.

4 out of 5 stars Creative choices and tight syncopation........1999-03-13

I know nothing of the Comedian Hamonists other than what's written in the album notes. They must have been quite an outfit. The King's Singers here are tight and well directed. The Flight of the Bumble Bee is a hoot. Night and Day never sounded so lovely and although I do not speak German, I found the German language numbers interesting to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

      Album Description

Imagine a show filled with your favorite hits from the Broadway stage, all composed by Broadway legend Jerry Herman! GMCLA was privileged to collaborate with Mr. Herman on a dazzling show of his greatest hits, featuring new arrangements for men's voices. Luckily, those happy performances were captured on this live album, including performances by guest stars Nancy Dussault and Malcolm Gets. Hear GMCLA soloists and dancers too, and the spontaneous joys of an ecstatic audience, clearly reveling in this unique moment.

Perhaps most magical of all, hear the Legend himself, Jerry Herman, perform live with GMCLA, accompanying himself on piano with his inimitable style. Rare moments like these make this a CD to cherish. All words and music, of course, by Jerry Herman.
