Each of these Tres Chicas were members of justly lauded bands in the 1980s and 1990s: Lynn Blakey with Oh OK, Let's Active, and most recently Glory Fountain; Caitlin Cary with Whiskeytown; and Tonya Lamm with Hazeldine. Formed after a chance encounter in Raleigh, North Carolina, the trio has a wealth of self-penned songs on which to showcase their gorgeous harmony vocals. This debut release outshines other such talent-packed ensembles, embracing everything from gospel harmonies to front-porch singalongs. Instead of coming off as a revolving centerstage, the three are so fully present on every song that each of their individual compositions bears the stamp of the whole group. Their guitars and violin are joined by occasional keyboards and a spare rhythm section (including producer Chris Stamey on bass). Covers of Loretta Lynn ("Deep As Your Pocket") and George Jones ("Take the Devil Out of Me") show a glimpse of their roots, but their original material stands near-equal to that of their forebears. --David Greenberger

4 out of 5 stars WOODSTOCK'S BEST KEPT SECRET.......2007-03-08

Sweetwater was supposed to be the first act at the 1969 Woodstock festival. This cd is as beautiful today as it was over 35 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetwater.......2007-01-03

Great music....takes you back to the 60's when "peace conciousness" was triggered, and I believe one of the first multi racial bands...

My favorite song on this CD is "Motherless Child"...the vocals are top notch...good old band "Sweetwater"...thanks for the inspiring music and ground breaking statements.

5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2004-09-01

I heard about Tres Chicas on accident and went to hear them live and was amazed! I immediately bought the CD. It was almost a disappointment b/c they're so great live. A little bit country and a little bit rock 'n' roll! I can't stop listening to the CD and if you have a chance, see them in concert. You won't waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars Super blend of three alt.country/rock female voices.......2004-08-01

Though they've been singing together for five years, this trio of alt.country/rock vocalists (Caitlin Cary of Whiskeytown, Lynn Blakey of Let's Active and Glory Fountain, and Tonya Lamm of Hazeldine) has only recently found their way to a commercial release - and its completeness is stunning. The ease with which their voices fit together brings to mind the sort of harmony found by CS&N, with leads slipping seamlessly from one vocalist to another. Imagine what Kelly Willis would sound like if she had two equally strong singers with whom to trade verses and backings, or if the Dixie Chicks' image wasn't so glammed up and their vocals not so fully dominated by Natalie Maines.

Better yet, all tres of the Chicas write, apart and together, providing a disc full of songs that match up to their finely selected covers of Lucinda Williams' "Am I Too Blue," Loretta Lynn's "Deep as Your Pocket," and George Jones' "Take the Devil Out of Me." Particularly fetching originals include Blakey's country rock title tune, Cary's waltz-time "Desire," and the group-written "When Was the Last Time." Chris Stamey's production is typically uncluttered and elegant, putting the focus on the voices, with dabs of instrumental talent from the group and selected guests. Tres Chicas' debut not only captures their musical harmony, but their deep personal friendships. Such kinship (rather than just group membership) is rare to begin with, but connecting it to a studio recording - and on a debut! - is a feat accomplished by just a lucky and talented few.

5 out of 5 stars It don't Get Much Better Than This.......2004-07-10

If you like great female singer/songwriters, and you like it a little bit counry, a little bit pop, and a little bit folk, then get this Cd as quick as you can. It is one of my favorite Cd's of the summer.

4 out of 5 stars Tres Sweet.......2004-07-09

Tres Chicas is a the alternative-country answer to the Thorns, an all-female "supergroup" consisting of Caitlin Cary, Tonya Lamm & Lynn Blakey of Whiskeytown, Hazeldine and Glory Foundation respectively. Those groups bubbled under the radar with their critically respected, no commercial sales music. Sweetwater will probably follow the same sales fate, but it will garner the same critical praise. The songs have a down home feel to them, with soft harmonies and acoustic touches like a mandolin and stand up bass. The trio does amp it up in spots like on the title track, "Heartbeat" and especially on a cover of Loretta Lynn's "Deep As Your Pocket" which features a spirited vocal interplay and fuzz-toned guitar riff. Sweetwater is a smooth and breezy listen and worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars COOKIN' SOME TUNA.......2005-09-30

There once was this little Club in Mill Valley in Northern California called the Sweetwater and in 1992 Hot Tuna picked this special place to record a bunch of shows for a live CD. Well, folks the first one: "Live at Sweetwater" did well enough to make "Tunaheads" scream loudly for a "Sweetwater Two" and Jorma was listening and gave us this release... Thank You, Jorma.

This is three piece "Acoustic" Tuna with Jorma singing and playing guitars, Jack (Eyebrows) Casady on Bass Guitar and Michael Falzarano on Guitars, mandolin, harmonica and vocals. Pete Sears joins on Piano, Bob Weir brought his guitar along and sings also as does Maria Muldaur.

"Hesitation Blues" is the opener and it's a good one, the groove is relaxed and Jorma is in excellant voice, the sound of these tapes are as good as live recordings get...Fantastic sounding Mix, this one sparkles crystal clear.
Next is "Dime For Beer" an old Jelly Roll Morton blues number with Michael's mandolin playing the piano parts and it fits the acoustic setting well. "Trial By Fire" sounds brand new done this way (way different from Airplane versions). A steller "Death Don't Have No Mercy" was my favorite cut from the original release but on this Expanded Edition there is lot's of competiton with the bonus cuts added in. But "Death" is still great with some fine Piano from Pete Sears, this one is not to be missed.

The bonus cuts added to this CD bring the running time up to 74 minutes and "Too Many Years" was one of the tracks added and it's my favorite here, best version of this one yet.

Happy Traum is the guest on "Ain't Got No Home" and Bob Weir turns up on "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". A rare "Blue Moon of Kentucky" is included with a Bayou Accordian solo and killer Dorbo, this is a way different sound for the boys. "Chelsea" is good, but I have never heard a bad version of this Airplane classic. Things come to a close with "My AK 47", "Parchman Farm", and Tuna's take on "Folsom Prison Blues".

Any Tuna Fan should own "Sweetwater One" & "Sweetwater Two", Hot Tuna is a part of Bay Rock History and they are just as important as The Dead or The Airplane (even if they never achieved the "cult worship" of those two groups) ROCK ON HOT TUNA !!!

The CD Hot Tuna Live at Sweetwater (bomus tracks) is a really good CD, although most of the best tracks were already on the original. The version of 'Maggies Farm' with Bob Weir is probably the best version of that song i have ever heard. Also the version of the old Blind Gary Davis song 'I Belong to the Band'is excellent, although Jorma doesn't sing this song with the feeling of the reverand the guitar work is amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-01-08

This is an absolutely fantastic album. I own most Hot Tuna recordings, and this one ranks right at the top. I have listened to this CD countless times in past several weeks, and it gets better each time.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Sweet Tuna!.......2001-11-20

I first saw Hot Tuna play the Pine Street Theater in Portland, OR on New Year's Eve '87-'88 and they were my favorite band for the next five years or so. They still are one of my favorites, but back then it was just Jorma Kaukonen (fingerstyle acoustic guitar & vocal) & Jack Cassady (bass) and I will never fully get past that period. "Live at Sweetwater" is a take from Tuna's transitional period between that lineup and the present fully electric one. I saw a show from around this period, and the CD made me look forward to it with high hopes. Unfortunately, the show REALLY ...... Fortunately, it was nothing like the CD. Regardless, I don't like Michael Falzarano (rhythm guitar, vocals, mandolin) as a musician, and maintain that his addition to the band was a very weird decision.

Nevertheless, this is my favorite acoustic Tuna release that I've listened to so far. Pete Sears (now also part of the regular lineup) shines like a crystal waterfall on piano, and Jorma & Jack sound better than a sigh blown away by a cool evening summer breeze. Many of the songs are Tuna standards, and I won't bother to review them all individually; suffice it to say that this should be the one you get if you only get one. Some unusual (for Tuna) blues songs include Rev. Gary Davis's "Great Change", my all-time favorite version of "Down and Out", "Trouble in Mind" and a startling Dylan song, "Maggie's Farm" featuring Maria Muldaur (who is sadly patronized in that she only sings backup) and the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir on lead vocal! 'Nuff said. Grab it immediately, Tuna fans and good music enthusiasts alike!

    5 out of 5 stars TUNA LIVE!.......2000-06-13

Hot Tuna is an amazing live band, and their Sweetwater concert really shows it. They rate up there with the Dead. Buy any live Tuna CD and go to any concert of their's any chance you get!

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars fish or fowl?.......2007-01-10

The original Sweetwater stood out as a rock-fusion band without a guitarist, the only one of their era. This reunion gig has taken on a guitarist with a heavy, dominating sound, so it doesn't really sound like Sweetwater. Nancy Nevins's new, post car-crash voice isn't really suited for all of the old Sweetwater stuff, and especially not for shouting over a heavy fuzz guitar, but she does manage a few moments of magic, especially on the new-material "Heroes and Ladies."

5 out of 5 stars Low-Down Emotion and Rich Composition.......2002-06-15

Sweetwater is even better now than when they opened the historical Woodstock Festival. Images and words drift across my mind as I listen to "Live at Last." I'm sent images of sadness, of joy, of longing. Nancy Nevins has too much soul to be white. Like Billie, Nancy sings from vast and probably painful experience with a voice much richer now than in earlier recordings; it has an ache to it, a longing that touches the listener, yet it's not without joyous hope for whatever's coming. "Rock Me," the 3rd cut, isn't something you can just sit and listen to without introspection. Hat's off to Sweetwater, then and especially now.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetwater aLive at Last.......2002-05-31

This is a real good CD! You need to hear this. The live quality is excellent. This is the reunion concert of the first band to perform at the original Woodstock. They had the potential to impact and change the direction of music in their day. The tragedy that struck this band with Nanci's car accident not only affected her and the band but we all lost out too. When you listen to this CD it's hard to believe this band just got together again after 30 years of being apart and out of music. They can still ROCK with the best of them and do. They were ahead of their time in many ways. If you want to learn more about what happened to end their rise to fame before their time see the video "Sweetwater a True Rock Story". ...If you are a fan of Sweetwater, Woodstock, the 60s and early 70s; if you are music history buff or just want to experience some darn good, new to you, but still Classic Rock, check out this CD. It is really cool. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hard to imagine why they weren't wildly popular.......2002-04-11

These folks are oh so good! There are 3 or 4 cuts from their original [2] LP's where they out-airplaned the Airplane, and did it with a more jazzy flair. Seriously, Nansi/Nancy Nevins easily outsang Grace, in the same style, but with more chops and more heat/warmth. On other tunes [or introductions], they have this almost Renaissance style on certain a capella passages, with great harmony and counterpoint (and never bland, as sometimes happened when the Stone Poneys tried the same sort of thing). Many of their songs were outstanding compositions with terrific arrangements; the performances from everyone are matchless and gutsy. Whether joy, humor, sadness or other emotions colour a given song, they seem to nail it.

They were multi-ethnic, and had a conga player, a flute player, plus a cello player who did a long solo on "My Crystal Spider" that sounds more like Hendrix than most guitar players who have had a go at imitating Jimi.

But their signature sound was really nothing without Nevins' voice. Besides having tons of technique, she was masterful at every tonal nuance of each kind of song she sang, whether using volume swells, biting off words in staccato fashion, or softly breathing a quiet, more soulful ballad. She also commanded great dynamics, being able to go from loud to quiet without any hint of her voice breaking . . . one might think of her as rock's equivalent of Joan Baez.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetwater "Live at Last".......2002-04-02

This of is from an amazing group, the first to perform at Woodstock, a group share bills w/ the major stars of the day, and a group that suffered incredible hardships. They have grown into an amazing talent, w/ more energy, music ability, and strength. This album caught Nancy Nevins, and Sweetwater at their very best, performing old favorites such as "My Crystal Spider", and Just For You. This is a must have for Sweetwater fans!

Their 1968 debut introduced Sweetwaters unusual blend of jazz, folk, rock, blues and classical influences, with an atypical, guitar-free line-up of keyboards, bass, cello, flute and percussion backing Nancy Nevins soaring vocals. The bands signature adaptation of 'Motherless Child' leads off, followed by 'Here We Go Again; For Petes Sake; Come Take a Walk; Whats Wrong; In a Rainbow; My Crystal Spider; Rondeau; Two Worlds; Through an Old Storybook', and 'Why Oh Why'. A West Coast psychedelic essential, produced (some would say over-produced) by the legendary Dave Hassinger!

5 out of 5 stars Saw them at Woodstock.......2005-09-06

I see that there is a new release just this last August. It's about time. I will buy the CD and not give this album the dishonor of a download. Yes the album is a bit corney sometimes but the raw 60's San Francisco summer of love feel is there and I take it from a rating of probably 3 to the above mentioned 5 because of it's posture and it's aura. The Motherless Child adaptation is superb. The rest swirls and bounces. Mixing and after-performance tweaking are non-existent (as it was for most albums back then: Refreshing to hear a band just play their songs). Interesting that at Woodstock, Sweetwater was shortly preceeded by Richie Havens, the first performer to perform, who did his famous version of Motherless Child.

I will never forget Nancy Nevins in her long gown, at the biginning of Sweetwater's set, starting the song from the back of the huge stage and slowly walking forward to the front. It was hot, there were SO many very cool people, we were not paying all that much attention to the music yet. The beginning of that song quieted and focused the crowd and things went from there...Not many people had heard of Sweetwater in mid August '69. For that matter, in a flyer that was distributed at the event, Santana was introduced "as this new great new act from San Francisco." Ah, those were the days...

Shortly after Woodstock, Nevins sustained severe injury in a car wreck; the band disappeared.

        Album Description

This 1972 release marked the end of the line for Sweetwater until they re-formed in the late '90s, as the inability to tour with Nevins or find a suitable replacement killed the band's career chances. Still, there are some great moments here, and the band's always superior musicianship shines through.
