What a treasure of old style, authentic Americana this music presents. If you haven't been to this smaller type of circus in person, you've certainly seen it in the movies. And this puts you right in the front row. The liner notes are great, as you can picture the sequence of the performers; from their grand entrance, to the finale, with the clowns slipping in here and there.
Wonderful music. I am very happy that I now own it. And I become happier each time I listen to it!

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

Not So Much.......2007-04-23
Unfortunately, for _Street Angel_ Stevie relied on far too much outside help. The overall mood this album gives is despair and sedation. Nearly every song is over-produced, and the quality is actually worse than that of albums released earlier on more primitive technology. This album contains more songs not written by Stevie herself than any other: big mistake. "Docklands" has no point, no message, I really don't understand why she even recorded it. "Unconditional Love" is unconditional fluff, and the same can be said for "Maybe Love..". These songs don't fit the Stevie Nicks image. The cover of Dylans "Just Like a Woman" sounds so heavily medicated it's hard to listen to, she shouldn't have attempted that.
Many of the songs written by Stevie also stand outside of typical Stevie. "Destiny" adds to the album-wide tone of desperation, and "Kick It" adds to the sedated/heavily medicated feel. "Blue Denim" is decent, but would have worked much better in the '80's.
There are good points; unfortunately, they are out of place on this album and while they stand alone as decent songs, they don't add to the overall integrity of the album.
"Rose Garden" is remeniscent of Buckingham Nicks days, very simple, country influenced. But it should have been released on a much earlier album, doesn't fit this album's "electric rocker" feel. The use of David Crosby in "Street Angel" is beautiful (Stevie is at her best when she harmonizes with men), but it also doen't fit the "electric rocker" feel. I much prefer the remastered and simplified versions of both of these songs that can be found on Enchanted: The Works of Stevie Nicks. Also noteworthy is the final song "Jane." It still adds to that hopeless sensation, but but it pays great homage to Jane Goodall, someone we all can respect.
Overall, I can honestly say that I own this album so that I have a complete Stevie Nicks collection, but it literally never comes off my shelf. This is very atypical of Stevie Nicks: she'll tell you herself that she was always very unhappy with this album. It shows.
A low point in Stevie's long career..........2006-11-21
Firstly, the album is very inconsistent. Brilliant tracks like "Blue Denim", "Destiny" and "Maybe Love" are mixed with filler like "Docklands" and the awful "Jane".
However, there is one bright light in this other-wise below-par album, and that is "Rose Garden". "Rose Garden" was written in 1965, well before Stevie was the famous icon of today, and the song is genuinely heart-breaking, and incredibly well sung - "Street Angel" is worth buying just for this.
If this album was edited slightly, and filler tracks were removed, 'Street Angel' would not be a bad effort at all, but in the way it is, it is less than impressive, but still enjoyable none-the-less.
Not bad at all.......2006-08-20
Honestly, I cannot understand why this albus has been critzised so much. I like it!
Street Angel.......2006-06-27
Stevie Nicks - Street Angel (1994) .......2006-06-27
As such, it's not really clear why Nicks released Street Angel at all. Her career badly needed an authoritative work to reassert her relevance, and Street Angel is brittle at best and succumbs entirely to the weaknesses that maimed her prior two original efforts. Of course, if Stevie Nicks had embraced the hip hop or grunge trends of the time it would have been a total disaster. Resting on her laurels, though, was not a much better alternative.
Overall, Street Angel is ruined by a combination of poor songwriting and a lack of new (or good) ideas. For example, "Blue Denim" would have been a great song in 1984 but in 1994 it just sounded tired. "Destiny" actually recycles lyrics from "Enchanted," a song off The Wild Heart. "Greta" and "Docklands" are Nicks at her most self-indulgent, and her dreadful cover of "Just Like a Woman" is painful to listen to. There are just enough solid songs to make the album passable, but most of them come from outside writers.
Street Angel came and went with little notice, and Nicks rode out the rest of the decade with a Fleetwood Mac reunion (the hugely successful The Dance) and a lovingly created boxed set (Enchanted). These efforts established her status as an elder spokeswoman of rock. Luckily, Street Angel was the final stop of Nicks' drawn out fall from grace. The new decade would find her producing much better work to a far more receptive public.

A terrific collection of Sousa pieces.......2006-06-09
You won't have any difficulty finding albums of Sousa's marches. But what about the rest of his works? This fine album includes a few and the Nonpareil Wind Band, under the direction of Timothy Foley, does an excellent job of playing them.
If I had to choose just eight of Sousa's pieces in order to introduce an audience to Sousa, here is what I would select:
El Capitan
Sound Off
With Pleasure
The Crusader
The Free Lance
The Gladiator
Semper Fidelis
The Fairest of the Fair
As you can see, half of these eight pieces are on this disc. You'll have to look elsewhere to find the others.
I highly recommend this excellent album.
A Grand Sousa Concert, Indeed.......2005-01-31
First of all, it's important for folks new to Sousa to understand that no, sir - he didn't compose only marches. Rather a shame that nowadays those are almost exclusively what he's legendary for - they are gems, indeed, but there's far more to the man than what we so often hear in high school bands, hometown parades and national events. Sousa could charm us with playful foxtrots, delight us with unique tangos, caress the ears with heavenly waltzes, and humor us with whimsical cakewalks. Thank goodness this album proves this truth.
Appropriately, the Great American Main Street Band plays each piece with strength, elan and respect - it doesn't get any better. The finest selections include "The Pathfinder of Panama" - a truly rousing march; "The Gliding Girl" - a tango, dedicated to his daughter, Priscilla); "The Presidential Polonaise" - a most noble dance; "La Reine de la Mer" - one of my favorite waltzes, so lovely; and "With Pleasure" - a cakewalk in the most deleriously fanciful fashion. Of course, each piece amongst these stong points is just wonderful, as well.
In all, this is just a flat out great album. Required listening for newly-minted Sousa fans, as well as members of the Old Guard - that would include me. It's a joy to hear, and will become a frequent resident in your CD shuffler - I guarantee that.
Thumbs up.......2003-02-05

Viveza, one of the world's favourite salon groups does it again! With "Encore" this Canadian quintet brings alive salon music from Europe and South America with a freshness and vivacity that you have to hear to believe.Salon music flourished in the 1920's and 30's, especially in the grand hotels. The repertoire of each ensemble was as varied as the patrons who frequented these fabled "palm courts." In an evening at the Ritz one was likely to hear music from Dvorak to Ravel, Lehar to Brahms or gypsy folksongs.
As you will discover with Viveza's Encore, the salon repertoire offers a cornucopia of tasty delights for your listening pleasure.
