4 out of 5 stars defining the psychedelic era.......2007-04-16

This is one of the few groups of the psychedelic era whose musicianship was equal to their ambition. They delve into all sorts of musical genres and invent a couple of their own. If you like the '60s psychedelic sound as well as the quirkiness of lesser known groups like the Incredible String Band or Jim Kweskin these guys deserve a listen. Good headphones are the order of the day!

5 out of 5 stars Genius........2004-05-01

Is it possible for a band to be too good? Is it possible for a band to be too ahead of its time, too talented, too ecclectic, too innovative, too brilliant? Sadly, the answer is yes.
I have been swimming through the beautiful depths of 60's music for years. My all-time favorite band is of course LOVE. I adore the famous bands like the Byrds, Doors, Kinks, Beatles, Country Joe, Donovan, etc. as well as the lesser knowns like The Moon, the Brigade, Pearls Before Swine, Terry Reid, etc.. -- but until I found this 3-disc set of Kaleidescope (USA), I honestly didn't think there were anymore TRULY great bands from the 60's that I didn't know.
These guys were incredible. One minute sounding like the Seeds, the next like the Byrds, and then all of a sudden -- sounding totally unique and un-classifiable. Some songs are dreamy folk-psych ("Keep Your Mind Open") and the next you're listening to Middle-Eastern journeys, and then back to solid '60s pop, and then suddenly into rag-time country music. All over the map. All over the place. Vocals are outstanding. Lyrics incredible. And the musical innovations just don't stop. How is it possible that this band has been so over-looked for so long? Too genius...?

CD/EP

Every now and then a band goes on a search for the psychedelic grail, a cup whose first sips in the '60s created music to mirror the era's youthful tendency toward drug-assisted mind exploration. Boston's 4-member SUNTAN is within arm's reach of the chalice on their self-titled debut EP. No, their additions to the psy-corpus are not created in a vacuum. Fluid organ and synth runs make reference to the sweet melancholy of Rain Parade, while the band's minimalist guitar drones lead directly back to the space perambulations of Spacemen 3. And those dualing guitar workouts are surely reminiscent of Television or Crazy Horse. SUNTAN's personal stamp lies in their shimmering, indelible melodies. And thanks to an expert hand in the sound-layering department, their songs grow in intensity to something almost grandiose. The sonic stretch of these three musical odysseys is abetted by the disc's 26 minute length, making this EP a ride of some substance. All this from a band barely over ! a year old! Such accomplished head trips are hard to find nowadays. Look for a full-length in the first half of 2003.

4 out of 5 stars A solid debut.......2002-12-26

A pretty good first release for this Boston quartet. The intruigingly named first track is definitely the best song on here, but the other two are nice too, in their own way. Its ambitious, and if these guys can keep it up when they release an album, they might have a hit on their hands.

5 out of 5 stars JAZZTIMES review of Yesterday's Dream - July/August 1993.......2005-09-30

Keyboardist Gary Brunotte should turn heads with Yesterday's Dream (Altenburgh; 43:30), an eminently appealing date featuring saxman Eric Marienthal, bassists Jimmy Johnson and Gordy Johnson, drummers Bill Berg and Gordy Knudtson, percussionists Brad Dutz and Marc Anderson, and vocalist Lucia Newell. Brunotte is a crisp, indeed, intelligent player whose charts sizzle and yet leave plenty of space for inspired soloing. And, egads, this may be Marienthal's finest outing - tres musical! Along with Brunotte's bracing originals are attractive reframings of "If I Only Had a Brain" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up he Most." In all, a first-class effort, especially the tracks anchored by West Coast heavies Jimmy Johnson, Bill Berg and Brad Dutz.
