5 out of 5 stars Arguably "Thee" Best Instant Live Recording Of The Tour.......2006-09-26

First off, all the other Instant Live recordings from the Cult's 2006 tour are recorded on green dyed cd-rs. This release however arrived, to my pleasant surprise, on a factory pressed silver cd (meaning it will play in all cd players).
Other than the higher quality materials, this show has the best mix and sound of all the other shows I have heard (and I've heard them all). The band also plays a great set list too. The key here is John Tempesta's drumming; the other recordings do him no justice. The sound here is unbelievable with his drumming giving my subwoofer a beating. Tempesta's drumming on "Electric Ocean" will literally blow you away at higher volumes. Duffy's guitar is also upfront in the mix. In other IL recordings, Duffy's axe work is buried slightly below Astbury's vocals, not so here. Even though this is an Instant Live recording, it may be one of the best live documents I own. I strongly urge any Cult fan to buy this ASAP before they are all gone.
****FYI, the packaging on these recordings is not very durable. I ordered several from different zShop sellers; and the simple bumble mailer was not enough to keep them from getting damaged. These are limited edition/collector's item's, so order them from only the most reputable sellers.****

5 out of 5 stars "Hustle and strut through the city at night." .......2006-07-26

Think about the great moments in rock'n'roll; Tom Verlaine's solo in "Marquee Moon," the beginning of "Sweet Child O' Mine," the riff to "Toys in the Attic," and so on. Right up there is the grand finale of "Love Removal Machine." The "Start Me Up" riff suddenly turns into an enraged rave-up, with Billy Duffy playing as if Chuck Zito were chasing him. And you've got Ian Astbury shouting his ##@# off, contributing one of the greatest "AHHH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH'S!" ever recorded. It's a thing of beauty. Now imagine a concert full of those moments.
After a four-year hiatus (with Astbury becoming to Jim Morrison what Rich Little was to Johnny Carson), The Cult came back to their beloved "Newww York Citayyyyyy" and completely destroyed it.
Opener "Lil' Devil" seemingly turned the Nokia into the world's biggest strip bar. "Sweet Soul Sister" sounded better than ever, with an extended jam set to Astbury berating security over ignoring a fight. On a particularly forbidding "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon," Chris Wyse played stand-up bass with bow, intensifying the song's phantasmagoric "Mary Shelley's Velvet Underground" vibe.
Another goth classic, "Phoenix," with its copped "I Wanna Be Your Dog" opening, took everyone into a psychedelic hell, and even some of us back to 1986, getting ready for our Bar-Mitzvah's.
Ex-White Zombie drummer John Tempesta was exceptional, giving the material more swing and spine. And Billy Duffy proved that, despite its current neutered state, rock'n'roll still has guitar heroes, and he's one of the greatest.
On "Spiritwalker" and "She Sells Sanctuary," Duffy showed off his alternative/goth roots with swirly U2/Bunnymen melodies, and celebrated his inner Angus Young/Tony Iommi on "Wildflower" and "Peace Dog." "Rise" combined both sides, as he simultaneously channeled Robert Smith and the late Dimebag Darrell. It's no wonder their fan base is so diverse.
Ian Astbury was in prime form, still screaming after all these years, and making unintentionally funny proclamations like "Songs of innocence, songs of experience." And yes, they ended with "Love Removal Machine," which would probably not fall under "innocence."
In '89, Astbury sang, "Hell's Kitchen is a crazy place." While times have changed, it's nice to see The Cult haven't. Long may they wreak havoc.

5 out of 5 stars A cult recording!.......2007-03-20

Blue Oyster cult was one of the hardest and innovative bands of the middle seventies and early eighties. Their irreverent lyrics and outstanding letters was an invitation to make us think about a lot of issues expressed with wilderness conviction of an era in which nothing was like it seemed.

The powerful track dedicated to Joan Crawford, for instance, is a true tour de force, as well as my three favorite songs: " Veterans of the physic wars"- a true genial song -, the overwhelming version of Roadhouse Blues and "Dominance and submission" hovered by disturbing message that caught with pretty accuracy the deep despair of that age.

His sound was electrifying and challenging. So, if you want to feel and enjoy one of the supreme and solid rock bands of this period., go for this work, that will confirm once for all: Long live Rock & Roll !

5 out of 5 stars Another Great BOC Live Album.......2006-10-18

This album was recorded on the "Fire Of Unknown Origin" tour that saw the first cracks beginning to appear in the lineup. Original drummer Albert Buchard left (or was fired from) the group during this time and only appears on two tracks of this release. The rest of the drumming duties are filled by former drum tech Brian Downey who would continue as the bands drummer for the next few years. The original vinyl version of this album was a 2 record set, but appears on one CD. The album covers a lot of ground and serves as a nice overview of the band's career up to this point. The hits are here ("Burnin For You", "Godzilla", "ETI", "Don't Fear The Reaper") and all done well. "Reaper" especially comes of better than on the previous live version on "Some Enchanted Evening". Lot's of great album cuts are include here too featuring "Joan Crawford", "Dominance And Submission", "Black Blade", "Hot Rails To Hell", and the almost proggy "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" complete with a killer guitar solo from Buck. The album also includes a cool cover of "Roadhouse Blues" with special guest Robby Krieger from The Doors. Overall it is another great live BOC album.

4 out of 5 stars Barely a four star rating... More like 3 1/2.......2006-03-15

A lot of BOC's stuff sounds better live then it is in the studio. The main reason for this is that their early studio recordings had poor production levels and sounded quite wimpy for a band that can be, for the most part, categorized as hard rock. But BOC is one of those bands, as well, who does some stuff really great live and other stuff is pretty horrible. I'm not going to get into great detail here, but I will simply rate each song based as it appears on this CD:

Dominance and Submission (8/10 way better than the studio version)
Cities on Flame (7/10 still better than the studio version, but never cared for the song much from the start)
Dr. Music (6/10 studio version is better but still pretty weak song; Great Sun Jester and Moon Crazy are way better songs off of "Mirrors" where are they on here?)
Red and the Black (8/10 good on both versions)
Joan Crawford (8/10 slightly better on studion version)
Burnin' for You (9/10 I rate it equal to the studio in it's own merits)
Hot Rails to Hell (6/10 way better on the studio version, this is sludgy and sucky... Mostly because of the awful drums used on this CD. When Rick Downey replaced Bouchard he wasn't as good and also brought drums with too much hallow effects, annoying).
Black Blade (7/10 better in the studio)
Godzilla (5/10 horrible live, way better in the studio; again, sludgy and slow version)
Veteran of Psychic Wars (9/10 great version, much better with Bucks long solo incorporated)
ETI (9/10 way better than the studio version, again)
Don't Fear the Reaper (8/10 just as good as studio version in it's own merits).
As a concluding remark, I am looking forward to receiving Tales of the Psychic Wars on CD because I suspect it's going to be a lot better than this and hopefully have remastered sound. I'll rate that when I get it. Stay tuned. That's all for now.

4 out of 5 stars makes you feel like your there.......2006-02-04

Black Blade, Dominance & Submission, are outstanding tracks....I was hoping for a live version of the Vigil, Great Sun Jester, and some tracks from Cultosareus Erectus. However overall it seeems like a combination of "On your feet" and the other live album"Some Enchanted Evening". Eric Bloom's vocals on this album is super, besides his performance on the songs mentioned already-"Vetreans of the Psyhic Wars is brillant, and Buck is still Buck, quite possibly the greatest guitar player of that time frame! This live album has incrediable amount of energy!

4 out of 5 stars 3000 guitars.. they seem to cry.... .......2005-12-22

How else may one describe the guitar work on "Cities on Flame"? The first 4 songs on this live opus are so intense, your ears will melt. A very good offering of live material from the early '80's. However, versions of "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "E.T.I" are better on the previous live "Some Enchanted Evening". Well worth buying, highlights include "Dominance & Submission", "Cities on Flame, Dr. Music, Red & the Black, Black Blade, Godzilla, Hot Rails to Hell. Turn this one way up and annoy your neighbors

4 out of 5 stars Real Rock, no hype!.......2002-10-27

This album is badd!! Anyone who is a cult fanatic or even a mild admirer of this influential rock, punk band will be interested. The best thing I found about this double disc set is that a large proportion of the set list includes pre-electric tunes. There is a large degree of Love songs on this set and what's even better is that you get to hear how these tracks have "mutated" and changed since the early 80's. There are parts where you can obviously tell that Ian's voice is going out, but hey, if you sing like this on a 200 date tour you're voice is going to sound a little ragged also! I also need to mention that on the cd sleeve, there is a statement that there were no overdubs or studio cleanups involved in the production of this album! What you hear is what was there! For anyone who questions the validity of soul, feeling and no hype attitude of the Cult, this 2 disc set will confirm all that these guys have been saying and doing all along, Rock is alive and the cult is proof! 101

5 out of 5 stars Unique Set List, Very Good Sound........2007-04-16

While the quality of the recording is not on par with the better efforts like Cleveland or New York, the quality is still excellent overall. A rating of 4.5 out of 5 would be more accurate. With this being the first show of the tour, Instant Live seems to be tweaking the mix and volume levels as the recording progresses. These adjustments in no way detract from the band's performance. The gem here is the inclusion of the song "New York City" which is one of my favorites. The band dropped it from the set list and it is not available on subsequent concerts. The band is in top form and very spirited throughout (unlike the dreary & unispired San Diego show). For newcomers I would start with the New York City or Cleveland show. But for "diehard" fans, adding this to cart is pretty much a no brainer.
****FYI, there will be a dvd of the Cult's concert at the Irving Plaza in New York City available shortly. The music from the concert is only available from Instant Live via download at 192 kBit mp3. The Irving Plaza show is arguably the best of the entire US Tour and a must have for any fan. I hope to be reviewing the dvd very soon!****

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Of The Tour...........2006-08-18

I've listened repeatedly to most of the "Instant Live" shows from the Cult's recent tour. The Cleveland show combines a spirited performance, really good sound, a great mix and a longer set list than other shows on the tour. While none of the "Instant Live" shows can be compared to the sound quality of an "official" live album, this one is about as close as it gets. The key on this release is Astbury's attitude on his vocals and Duffy's killer playing; both right up front in the mix. This is arguably my favorite show of the lot. If you've made it this far you are obviously a Cult fan, debated which one of the many "Instant Live" shows to choose from. Starting here is as good a place as any. You will not be disappointed.

Album Description

In the tradition of Neutral Milk Hotel, Fleming Lips and old school Pink Floyd, Cloud Cult creates a brilliant second album as a dedication to Craig Minowa singer/songwriter's deceased two year old son.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Progressive in every sense.......2004-03-08

I would recommend the album for anyone really interested in truly innovative, independant music. The styles of the music are varied; chances are if you like some songs a lot, you will dislike a few others.

However, the stuff in the album is original in every sense and conveys an emotional depth you are not likely to find elsewhere. Most, if not all, of the songs on the album were inspired by the death of the lead singer and writer's two-year-old son and it is a beautiful tribute to him.

It is difficult to think of something to compare the music to. If you like tuning in to college radio stations, you will probably love the album.

While a few tracks may be a bit weak, overall it's well-worth the money spent. If not for any other reason, the fact that the label, Earthology records, is the only non-profit record label on the planet that donates every penny of its profits to environmental organizations.
