This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Christmas is the season for whipping out those holiday-specific standard recordings. This splendid gift by Chanticleer should top the list, for one will never tire of this a cappella choir's interpretations. With selections spanning the last five centuries of Latin, German, English, Spanish, and French festive fare, this recording exemplifies the sacrifice of the ego to the higher form of choral sound. Jacob Handl's "Mirabile Mysterium" takes you on a trip into the chromatic wonderlands, where you temporarily lose tonal balance. Victoria's eerie and dissonant "O Magnum Mysterium" treats us to rich voices swelling out of one organic whole. The phenomenal blend and perfect intonation elevate this recording above others in its category. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-02
'Es ist ein Ros entsprungen' is a hymn that originated in western Germany around 1500, and is best known in the harmonization by Michael Praetorious published around 1609. The poem used biblical imagery that pictures the newborn Christ growing forth from the "stem of Jesse'(the father of King David), as foretold in Isiah 11. The metaphorical writings of the Middle Ages depict the patriarchal figure of Jesse as a rose bush.
'O Magnum mysterium',Victoria's most famous motet, uses a subline text from the Christmas Vespers. This is incredibly beautiful with its interweaving polyphony which leads to a hushed choral declamation at the words "O beata Virgo"(O Blessed Virgin) ending with a Alleulia Section.
'Here is the Little Door' is from a set of three "carol anthems", dating from 1918-1920. Herbert Howells was revered as one of the 20th century's most distinguished Choral composers, and I recently discovered him thru the album " by the Corydon Singers conducted by Matthew Best. It includes Howells Requiem in addition to the Vaughan Williams Mass in G Minor. It is the most heavenly somewhat exotic choral music I think I have heard in many years of listening; I highly recommend it.
'Glory to the newborn King'. Joseph Jennings, Georgia native and present musical director of Chanticleer, has often drawn upon his roots to create special gospel and spiritual arrangements of familiar songs. 'Glory to the newborn King' features four traditional songs combined to showcase Chanticleer's unique choral virtuosity!
This is an excellent group of carols, and it is always refreshing to hear 'new' melodies, arrangements; a joy for the ear!!!!
Simply beautiful.......2006-02-20
It's that time of year...for Chanticleer!.......2005-12-20
These twelve male voices create an ambience that can only be labeled 'spiritual', so resonant and exquisitely performed are each of the generous works on this recording. The moods pass through Praetorius, Victoria, Bach and traditional carols of unknown authorship to works by Ives, Billings, Holst, Guerrero, Howells and Sametz. The repertoire is both familiar and rarely heard and the result of combining all these forms is the truest form of Christmas spirit on record: this is music to cleanse the Muzak blitz! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

If Only It Didn't Become A Budget-Buster.......2006-11-15
Van Zandt had left Springsteen to form his own band and release this Stax/Volt-influenced album in 1982. The songs were loosely based on Men Without Women, a 1927 collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway. The initial plans for the album and ensuing promotion was absolutely fantastic; an all-star cast of studio performers, a band that featured the outstanding bass player, Jean Beauvoir, and Felix Cavaliere on piano/organ, and the production of a long-form movie, with the album being the soundtrack.
But Van Zandt did not have a safety net that an established hit-maker like Springsteen could use when the project came in well over budget. Though the album received decent reviews, it could only stagger to a ranking of 118 on the Billboard 200, with the single, Forever, stopping at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The music has held up well over the ensuing 25 years and remains - depending on how one views the project - a tribute to a musician who wanted to test the bounds of innovation for his first project, or a plan closer to another Hemingway title for a short-story collection, Winner Take Nothing.

Great Double-Disc Set Of Little Steven.......2007-04-02
STEVE VAN ZANDT AT HIS BRILLIANT BEST - AN ALL TIME GREAT RECORDING.......2006-03-26
More important, he's a strong reason Bruce Springsteen is such an immense success with the E Street Band. Little Steven is a superb musician & songsmith -- great melodies, beautiful words.
The Men Without Women disc is a great one, sure joy compared to a lot of the drivel taking up the space in your brain today.
But in VOICE OF AMERICA, Little Steven Van Zandt was touched by the greatest spirits in the universe. It's simply ONE OF THE GREATEST collections of songs on a disc EVER MADE, yowzuh, right up there with Dylan, Lennon, U2, R.E.M. & the others who fill out your top ten. And thank gawd IT'S FINALLY RE-ISSUED! A mint condition copy of VOA sold on Amazon for $160 as recent as last week. My original copy was borrowed and never returned.
I've been aching to get this sound back.
The songs VOICE OF AMERICA, I AM A PATRIOT (absolutely the best arrangement ever produced, notwithstanding the covers of it by great singers all over the world), JUSTICE, SOLIDARITY -- they're all superbly crafted songs, real works of art that will stand up to be cheered a thousand years from now.
You should be sold. You should buy a couple of copies so you can give one to the most special person in your life.
Thank you Steve, for this great gift to the world.

ps: 15 years ago I produced 4 half-hours on the radio, called "Dear Abbie! A Celebration of the Words of Abbie Hoffman."
I was permitted to use Steven's songs from VOA, and all the songs on the series except two were from VOICE OF AMERICA.
Best series I ever produced.
Out of the Darkness.......2006-03-10
I've heard Men Without Women and own Born Again Savage, but I think Little Steven's Voice of America is not only his best work, it's one of the best early '80s albums period. Checkpoint Charlie was prescient in predicting the fall of the Berlin wall: "Wall so high, gotta come down baby." If the news knew anything about popular culture, they would have played that (or The Walls Came Down by the Call) as the soundtrack of that historic moment. The list of great songs goes on and on: "Los Disparacidos (The Disappeared,:" "Undefeated," and especially the piece de resistance, "Out of the Darkness," one of the few songs which, like U2's One, manages to combine relationships aned spirituality. The Boss wrote "Blood Brother" when Steve left the band to pursue these various pursuits. How sad that just when Born in the USA gained the questionable honor of making the cover of Time magazine, his bandmates' best album slipped into obscurity. Hopefully with this double release the Voice of America will for the first time be heard.
Outstanding.......2006-01-09
The remaster job is excellent, there are also some great liner notes and pictures, BGO did a first class job on this reissue.
There is not much need to go into the music as I am sure that any reading this already know how great these two albums are. Little Steven is great, pure and simple. He writes terrific songs, he is an outstanding singer/guitar player, the band is top notch. and the production is tight.
I highly recommend this set , for 18.99 you can not possibly go wrong.

Great music.......2006-08-30
An acquired taste well worth acquiring........2004-03-03
The multi-talented Mr. Van Zandt is best known as Springsteen's right hand man; he steals every scene he's in while playing 'Silvio' on "The Sopranos" and is responsible for a nationwide garage band radio program. He wrote and produced what I feel is the best "protest" song of OUR generation, "Sun City."
First off, his voice takes a little getting used to. It's a real voice, meaning he sounds authentic, but it's not what I would call "soothing". It's not meant to be. Nasal and whining, but services the songs very well (for the most part). When he's wailing "I will gather no more of your bitter fruit", it sounds just right.
Second, the production aspects on his earlier "singles" sound less dated than the later songs, due to their heavy dance-rock 80's style synths and drums.
Third...the funny thing is that I like THOSE later songs more. His songwriting clearly improves, as does his singing.
He's a phenomenal lyricist...plain and straightforward, an old-fashioned story teller.
And he's angry...hoo boy. He laments the plight of the Indians ("Native American" with a killer vocal by Bruce), the immigrant worker ("Bitter Fruit"...an irresistible beat with the great Ruben Blades on co-vocals), apartheid (the butt-shaking "Pretoria").
He rails against Reagan in "Vote!".
Not only does he wear his opinion on his sleeve, it's in neon lights. With the volume turned up to 11.
His earlier songs, like "Princess of Little Italy", don't leave as much of a lasting impression, but you'll still enjoy listening to his crack supporting band, The Disciples of Soul.
It'd be nice if someone would release this here in America. This is a great sampler for those of us wanting to get to know this particular musician.
Inside Left Outside.......2002-07-15
Even if it's all over, don't ever say it was all in vain
And don't tell me everything we believe in has been washed away
Because something still remains
I know it still remains, because I'm still the same
And there ain't nothing gonna change my mind
Because I've spent my whole life just trying to find
Something I know I need but can't define
Everything I ever wanted is here baby
It's still alive inside of me
It never died inside of me
Everybody tells me, open up your eyes, it can never be like it used to be
I say to them, open up your heart, you see just what you want to see
Is it too much for you to see the truth
Every time you look in my face
Ain't it a little late in the game to throw your hand in
And ain't it a little late in the game to forget everything we've been
Trapped by the locked doors you never could get in
It's still alive inside of me
It never died inside of me
There was a moment in time, we could almost taste the adventure every day
Now I know that we're a little bit older
but that don't mean there's nothing new left to say
Now we spend the days walking away instead of trying to do something about it
You oughta be right by my side
Instead of trying to find a place to hide
Fighting to keep everything that we had baby
It's still alive inside of me
It never died inside of me
Silvio Dante's best Work.......2001-12-13
proves that social consciousness and straight forward rock
mix very well. Start with the Carribean rhythms in
"Bitter Fruit" and crank it.
"Pretoria" starts weakly for about 15 seconds then becomes a haunting mix
of African tribal chants and rock & roll.
The only flaw: is the exclusion of the longer version of "Out Of The Darkness"
for the truncated top 40 version.

Resplendent in voice and manner, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti deliver 21 songs of traditional sacred music and secular numbers in a remarkable 1999 live recording from the opulent Viennese concert hall (Konzerthaus), with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and a renowned choir. The Three Tenors are practically as famous as the faces of Mount Rushmore and inspire perhaps even more awe and adulation around the world than the four presidents. The performances--whether alone, in tandem, or simply as the threesome that has made them collectively famous--are generally impeccable for their passion, nuance, and sheer tour de force vocal artistry. Reaching often into the classical realm for such works as the traditional German carol "Susani," Strauss's and Brahms's "Wiegenlied," plus traditional Polish and Spanish pieces, the trio also visits Pavarotti's "Ave Maria, dolce Maria" (cowritten with Vittoriano Benvenuti), and "Un nuevo siglo," written by Domingo's son. Only John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas/War Is Over" doesn't quite work in this grand setting. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Wonderfully Different & Addicting! And All Your Friends Will Be Calling HOO-HOO!.......2005-08-23
I found the CD delightful beyond words. It has some beautiful versions of well-known Christmas songs, as well as songs I've never heard before. "Carol of the Drum" and "War Is Over" are my two favorites, with "Sleigh Ride" a close third.
Sure, there is some tripping over of words by these three great opera stars...but that makes it even more enhancing in my opinion. Pavarotti was particularly amusing when he was singing: "And all our friends are calling 'HOO-HOO'!" (Watch the DVD for Carreras' reaction to that one!) And let's not forget Pavarotti singing: "I'll be home for Christmas. You can PLAY on me."
The children's chorus is great, the Vienna Symphony is great...and, once again, buy or rent the DVD so you can get the full affect of this astounding Christmas concert...the music, the lights, the colors, and the marvelous Steven Mercurio conducting it all.
Wonderful and funny compilation.......2005-03-09
A historical meeting..........2004-11-28
For one and a half hour, Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti performed the greatest Christmas songs and carols from around the world. Nearly 65 minutes of this monumental concert are captured on this disk. The opening version of "O Holy Night" (aka "Cantique De Noel", "Minuit, Chrétien") by Domingo and Pavarotti would be reason enough to get this one. But wait, there is far more on the way, than selections from the classical genre. The real enjoyment starts, when the three tenors do one of the most romantic arrangements of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" ever heard and fade from a rousing "La Virgen Lava Pa`nales" into one of the finest treatments of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" ever heard. Also of great interest is the trio arrangement of "Let It Snow!", which is included on some of the import versions and on the DVD.
If you are a hopeless completist like me, you may be asking, what happened to the 25 minutes cut from the CD release. Well, first let me say, that none of the currently available releases has the order of the songs as they were performed in the concert. Although this is a live recording, handclaps and other characteristics of a live recording are hardly audible on the CD version. Two tracks, "Jingle Bells" and "Let It Snow", which had clearly audible handclaps at the beginning and at the end of the performance (and therefore couldn't be faded out) can be found on the mentioned import disk and on the DVD's PCM soundtrack. "Children of Christmas" (a Plácido Domingo Jr. composition originally introduced in "Christmas In Vienna IV" by Plácido Domingo and Michael Bolton) and "Ay" Para Navidad" can be found exclusively on the DVD. Currently unavailable on any official release is the "Overture" (which can be found on the DVD, but abridged with sound effects). So here's the actual running order: "Overture", 20, 2, 1, 11, 3, 4, "Children of Christmas", 16, 17, 6, 15, 8, "Let it snow", 5, "Ay! Para Navidad", 9, 19, 14, 18, 12, 13, "Jingle Bells", 7, 21, 10;
If you still doubt about the quality of this performance, let me say one for sure: As other volumes in the series will slowly disappear (as some of them have already in the US), this one is a matter of decades and when you buy this one, you will have joyful Christmas hours for many, many Christmases to come.

Very stirring Spanish music.......2007-01-10
Everything you want it to be.......2006-04-20
I just bought this soundtrack last night after listening to bits of it on iTunes, and it is such a beautiful score. I've seen the film... gosh, I don't keep count anymore, but every time, I always take in the music. And how can you not? James Horner is a wonderful composer, yet the music seems to take on a life of its own.
The opening number gets you right away: the Spanish-style guitar strum, the frenzied tap dance, and the horns. One thing you can definitely credit music to do is build, be it suspense or emotion. The tap dance builds and builds until the guitar takes over.
The second number begins with drums like thunderclaps, violins still keeping the tension. The horns and claps enter, and you have Zorro's theme again. Percussion picks back up around the two-minute mark, and it keeps a nice tempo.
I like to think that this soundtrack is like a Spanish version of Pirates of the Caribbean, another of my favorite films. But the horns always let you know, with special clarity, that this is Zorro.
Whether or not this soundtrack is good is entirely up to the person listening. Then again, if you don't like it, why are you listening in the first place? If you want to hate it, then it's terrible. But if you appreciate all the orchestrations, this soundtrack is a masterpiece. Enjoy.
Excellent sound track.......2006-02-24
"Horner, the legend has returned!".......2006-02-08
The talk and hype of this album is the longest track: "The Train." Horner composes many long tracks for other works but this is one of, if not, his longest action track to date. It starts hard and fast with a Spanish trumpet, tapping and percussion all leading up to the very Spanish, fun Zorro theme at the 1-minute mark. From there it's non-stop action to the very end. This is one sweeping, swashbuckling ride of a score.
If you enjoyed the first Zorro music, you'll enjoy this one. However, there are no new themes only a multiple amount of use of the romantic theme from the first Zorro. This could be good or bad. It depends on your taste.
The action tracks really make this an awesome score. It's difficult to pick one composition over the over; Mask of Zorro or Legend of Zorro?
This is James Horner's best action score of the year. Add this one to your collection!
Great Fun!.......2005-11-23
The movie comes at an unusual time, seven years after it's predecessor. Why one only has to wonder what took them so long to get around to it, it's provided us with a new James Horner score at the very least. The first score was one of his best action scores... fun, inventive, and with excellent themes. Everyone raved about Horner's creativity, how much different it was from the rest of his work. He's now returned for a sequel (he doesn't do many of those, he's only scored sequels for "An American Tail", "Cocoon", "48 Hrs" and "Star Trek") to "Zorro" and like his other sequel scores ("An American Tail 2" excepted), it's quite similar to the first one. The opening track, "Collecting the Ballots" begins with the same hard guitar strum as the first, and the notes of clapping that follow are identical to the original score as well... fortunately, it's not a complete repeat after that. The same themes are utilized throughout the score, there's no significant new ones (aside from a "false love theme", you'll understand when you see the movie), but Horner uses them in different enough ways to make this score interesting. The instrumentation is the same (clapping hands, stomping feet, tambourines, guitars, ethnic pipes, and blaring horns) but the rhythms and paces are different.
The overall feel of the score is slightly more playful than the original, but it never feels cartoonish. It's simply more fun and less threatening than the original score. Whether this is a pro or con I will leave up to you. The love theme is used more often than the main theme this time around, and it's featured in stunning arrangements several times, but the focus of this score is action music. The action is a lot of fun, and if you enjoyed the first score, you will likely enjoy this one as well. The album is refreshingly free of Horner's cliches while simultaneously sounding like a Horner score... mostly. The highlight track of the album, and there are a few to choose from, is probably "The Train". The longest cue, it's a nearly non-stop action piece that is superbly exciting and epic in structure. Near the end, though, it seems that Horner got so creative he actually jumps out of his own musical borders and seems to be channeling John Williams in "Revenge of the Sith" mode, without ever directly stealing from him. Fascinating. Another bonus is that we have no annoying pop song here, rather, we get an end credits suite (My Family is My Life) that goes back and forth between the main theme and the love theme in various forms. As you probably have noticed, Horner likes to end his scores on a quiet note... his end credits tend to finish the themes, and then fade off into oblivion with quiet, gentle, wandering strings or flutes. Not here. In a bold move not heard since the likes of "Star Trek" or "The Rocketeer" (some might include "Ransom"), Horner brings his score to a close with a mighty brass trill, finishing off his action adventure with a bang. Cool!
Okay, I'll stop raving and make my obligatory complaints. The score is only prevented from reaching a five-star level due to it's derivative nature. There are no new themes here of note, and a novice might have a hard time telling it from the original. But on it's own, it's excellent, and unlike John William's second "Harry Potter" score, this is a score that doesn't pale in comparison to the original. It may not have quite as many highlights as the original score, but it's a more consistently well-written and quality listen. Plus the end credits suite is far more satisfying than that silly song. I've heard better scores this year in "Kingdom of Heaven", "Hostage", "Star Wars", "The Greatest Game Ever Played", "Corpse Bride", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", and others, but few of them have been as much pure orchestral fun as "The Legend of Zorro." Recommended.

A classic second-in-command rocker in the tradition of Keith Richards and Johnny Thunders, Little Steven has also made a mark apart from his erstwhile boss, the Boss. The man also known as Miami Steve Van Zandt had a major hand in Southside Johnny's bar-band masterwork Hearts of Stone, was the linchpin in 1985's Artists United Against Apartheid project, and lead his own group, the Disciples of Soul, for a time after his 1984 departure from the E Street Band. Largely out of the picture through the 1990s, Little Steven returns with a solo outing that rocks harder and is more inflamed lyrically than one might have expected from this long-AWOL warrior. Van Zandt's liner notes lay out his mission--to doff his bandana in the direction of the '60s rockers who helped shape his consciousness, from Cream to the Kinks to Jefferson Airplane. At the same time, he maintains the confrontational political stance that's been in evidence since the days of Sun City. Hence there's the title track ("Look around at the volunteered slavery") and "The Camouflage of Righteousness" ("We give you politicians and you call it a choice / We let you do the voting and you think you have a voice"). With this Savage attack, Little Steven fights the good fight and remains standing. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
