Lenny Kravitz is known for proudly wearing his influences on his sleeve, but on his sixth album it's clear Kravitz has at last honed a sound he can call his own. Mixing hard rock and ballads, Lenny kicks in with the blistering "Battlefield of Love," a solid rocker with a funk groove. The retro "If I Could Fall in Love" displays a touch of psychedelia, while the Lennonesque "God Save Us All" is bluesy and uplifting. The success of "Again," the smash single from his 2000 hits package, appears to have registered with Kravitz, who surfaces a new crop of midtempo ballads here--all far stronger than "Again." "Yesterday Is Gone (My Dear Kay)" is a finely crafted tune on it's own, yet Kravitz experiments with atypical sounds. The soulful "Stillness of Heart" builds with acoustic guitars and layered harmonies, concluding with a lovely string arrangement. And "You Were in My Heart" mixes synth loops over solid rhythms and a haunting melody. Lenny may seem like an oddly nondescript title, but it's apt; these 12 songs simply sound like the work of Lenny Kravitz. --Gail Flug

More prolific than D'Angelo and Terence Trent D'Arby combined, one-man rock & soul revivalist Lenny Kravitz kept traditional pop values alive through much of the '90s. From the Motown-perfect "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" to the Beatlesesque "Let Love Rule," Kravitz has always inhabited his influences with a genuine spirit that transcends imitation. The 15 tracks found here provide a surprisingly coherent reminder of just how much the artist has accomplished in a relatively short time. And even if his biggest hit, "Are You Gonna Go My Way," falls short of its Hendrix target, Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" still rocks in a pleasingly Neanderthal way. An infectious new cut, "Again," fits neatly alongside sturdy Kravitz originals such as "Fly Away," "Mr. Cab Driver," and "Black Velveteen," showcasing a talent whose postmodern pop should play well into the new century. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT LENNY KRAVITZ COMPILATION! .......2007-01-02

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece compilation album entitled "LENNY KRAVITZ GREATEST HITS" by one of Rock's newest premiere performers, LENNY KRAVITZ! This complilation album was originally released in 2000 on Compact Disc on the Virgin Records America label. The matrix or ID number is 7243 8 50316 2 5. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

What can I say about LENNY KRAVITZ that hasn't already been said? Lenny Kravitz is one the latest and most recently new rising black guitar players to emerge in the Rock n' Roll scene! They're has been great black guitarists that have passed through Rock n' Roll history! I'm talking about guitarists such as THE GREAT CHUCK BERRY, THE LATE GREAT JIMI HENDRIX, VERNON REID FROM LIVING COLOUR and THE LEGENDARY PRINCE! When LENNY KRAVITZ came on the music scene in the early 90's, he had no intentions of ever looking back! Lenny's blistering guitar playing would have definitely made his ancestor's extremely proud! Did you also know that Lenny's mother was a famous actress named Roxie Roker? You might remember her as the neighbor of Cleaners owner George Jefferson of the popular 70's TV series "THE JEFFERSON'S!" Did you also know that Lenny is half black and half white! Lenny would even do one better by marrying and divorcing America's Sweetheart from The Cosby Show, Lisa Bonet! In my opinion, it wouldn't be until the 1991 album "MAMA SAID" that Lenny would gain fame and attention! However, Lenny would really gain worldwide fame with the release of "ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY" in 1993! And as the saying goes folks, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY!" In my opinion, "LENNY KRAVITZ GREATEST HITS" is an outstanding compilation album that is also a true testament of a great guitarist that is also a sheer genius in striving for perfection for his greatest love and passion, HIS MUSIC! This compilation album is quite simply, LENNY KRAVITZ'S STORY! Every single song track in this compilation album is GREAT!

I will list and briefly review all the song tracks contained in this compilation album in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Are You Gonna Go My Way," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S! I love KRAVITZ'S blistering guitar riff arrangements in this one! This ROCKER is one of KRAVITZ'S BEST EVER! I love this Rocker!) (2.) "Fly Away," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S! I also love KRAVITZ'S blistering guitar riff arrangements in this one as well! I love it!) (3.) "Rock And Roll Is Dead," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! This Rocker, like many of his Rocker's, has some great guitar riff arrangements that result a kick a*s Rocker! I love it as well!) (4.) "Again," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A GREAT SLOW KRAVITZ ROCKER that KICKS A*S! I love this slow Rocker!) (5.) "It Ain't Over Til It's Over," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I LOVE THIS SONG! This is a GREAT slow KRAVITZ number! This song sounds a little R & B and Disco! KRAVITZ really displays his talents as a Lead Singer by demonstrating his falsetto voice range!) (6.) "Can't Get You Off My Mind," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another GREAT slow KRAVITZ ROCKER! This slow Rocker really kicks! I love it!) (7.) "Mr. Cab Driver," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another KRAVITZ ROCKER that KICKS A*S! I love the way Lenny uses the "F" word in this one! I love this Rocker!) (8.) "American Woman," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE GUESS WHO! This is a GREAT ROCKIN' version done the LENNY KRAVITZ way, ROCK'S AND KICKS A*S! I love it!) (9.) "Stand By My Woman," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL SLOW MELLOW SONG! KRAVITZ really sings this song with such raw power and emotion like he REALLY means it! This song sounds like something that John Lennon would sing if he were alive today! I love this song so dearly!) (10.) "Always On The Run," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER that KICKS A*S! Preach it Lenny! Ain't it the truth! I love the musical arrangements in this one as well! I love it!) (11.) "Heaven Help," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another GREAT slow KRAVITZ number! I love the musical arrangements in this one! I love this one!) (12.) "I Belong To You," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This is a great number with a great beat to it! This song has a pinch of some R & B and Soul added to it! I love this song!) (13.) "Believe," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! The Vocal effects in this song sounds like The Beatles and/or the George Harrison composition song "BLUE JAY WAY! You can actually feel The Beatles influence in KRAVITZ'S music! I love it!) (14.) "Let Love Rule" (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another GREAT slow KRAVITZ ROCKER! KRAVITZ'S blistering Lead Vocals REALLY GET DOWN in this one! This song sounds like a Beatles song, am I wrong? WOW! I love this one!) and (15.) "Black Velveteen." (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Again, this is another GREAT KRAVITZ ROCKER THAT KICKS A*S! I love this one as well!) There are four GREAT A*S KICKING songs that deserve honorable mention with this compilation album! They are "Lady," "California," "Where Are We Runnin'" and "Flash" from Lenny's 2004 album release "BAPTISM." Overall, this is one GREAT A*S KICKING compilation album! Every single song track contained in this compilation album is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!

As you can see, this is definitely one great treasure compilation album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album will prove to persevere the test of time and will only get better like wine! This compilation album without a doubt will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, the LENNY KRAVITZ LEGEND has continued to grow to this point and will only get better! I really truly believe with all my heart that KRAVITZ'S best is yet to come! I, as one am definitely looking forward to it! Here's to you Lenny and your band too! Keep up the GREAT ROCKIN' Lenny! Keep The Faith! Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LENNY KRAVITZ RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as a Greatest Hits Collection Gets.......2005-12-12

In the mid 1990s, I heard a concert promotion radio ad that was basically introducing the performer to be "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Star". When they announced that star to be Lenny Kravitz, I must admit, I nearly drove off the road when I heard that. I had realized Kravitz had some commercial success and had a nice following, but "World's Greatest Rock and Roll Star"? - Come On! However, now about a decade later, as I have begun to get a deeper appreciation for what Rock music has to offer, I now realize that perhaps there is some real merit to that radio ad. I'm still not ready to put Kravitz up there with the upper echelon of Rock with the Paul McCartneys, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteens, or even Billy Joels - however, it is safe to say that Kravitz could easily be one of the great revelations of the 1990s and has lived completely up to expectations as he has entered the 2000s. In 2000, Kravitz amassed enough material and success to release his first Greatest Hits album. This collection, "Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits" provides some a great cross-section into Kravitz's musical career and is a great place to start if you are interested in checking out Kravtiz's material.

"Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits" hits focuses on the first decade of Kravitz's career (1989-2000). During this time, Kravtiz would release five solo albums for an average of 1 album every 2 years. These albums (and the associated tracks included from these albums) are: 1989's "Let Love Rule" ("Mr Cab Driver", "Let Love Rule"); 1991's "Mama Said" ("It Ain't Over Til It's Over", "Stand By My Woman", "Always On the Run"); 1993's "Are You Gonna Go My Way" ("Are You Gonna Go My Way", "Heaven Help", "Believe"); 1995's "Circus" ("Rock and Roll is Dead", "Can't Get You Off My Mind"); "5" ("Fly Away", "I Belong to You", "Black Velveteen"). As with the case of most greatest hits albums, there is one new song to stimulate album sales among the deep fan base - a very solid song called, "Again". It is worth noting that Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman" is also included on this collection. This song was part of the soundtrack of "Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me", but was eventually included on the re-issue of "5". One thing that is very nice about this collection is that it is split among the 5 albums just about evenly. I'm pleased that there are even two songs from his first album which was really not commercially successful.

I think that Kravitz hits the three main dimensions that I expect from a successful solo artist: Vocals, Instrumentation, and Songwriting. On top of these three dimensions, Kravitz cross all of these dimensions by providing a variety of different music styles. Whether it is hard Rock, R&B, or Funk - Kravitz finds ways to incorporate these styles and more into his music. Kravitz was influenced by Prince who also incorporated similar styles into his music. "Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits" will show examples of this wide range of diversity. You can hear Kravitz's Hard Rock style on "Are You Gonna Go My Way", "American Woman", "Fly Away", "Rock and Roll is Dead" and "Always on the Run". Songs such as "Mr Cab Driver" have a definite Funk influence in it - especially on the Bass. Still songs such as "Heaven Help" , "It Ain't Over Til its Over", and "I Belong to You" show Kravitz' R&B side. Despite these obvious influences, it is not easy to pigeon-hole Kravtiz's music into one musical genre. There are many of his songs that definitely cross several of these genres and also break new ground. Perhaps the best example of this is "Black Velveteen". "Black Velveteen" has been a song that Kravitz has been criticized for, but I happen to think it's the best song he has done. The song does have a "Euro Pop" feel, but it you will hear parts of Hard Rock and even R&B overlaid on top of this. I like how Kravitz tries to do something "out of the box" and "different" to his music. Kravitz's ability to innovate didn't happen late in his career - listen to his early song "Let Love Rule". Kravitz uses combines some R&B with some Jimi Hendrix-like sounds to give a unique sound.

As mentioned I think it comes down to the three dimensions I list above. Kravitz shows incredible range on his vocals - whether it's "It Ain't Over Til It's Over", "Let Love Rule" or his new track "Again", Kravitz will show he is not one dimensional as a vocalist. From an instrumentation standpoint, Kravitz is well-known for his incredible guitar, but also listen to his Bass work as well. You'll hear Kravitz incorporate other instruments as well - such as piano on "Heaven Help" or horns on "Let Love Rule" and "Always on the Run". Lost in this whole picture is some of Kravitz's songwriting - this is perhaps one of the most overlooked dimensions of his talent. Once again, this can even be traced early to his career - on 1989's "Mr Cab Driver", he describes the experiences of racism and discrimination.

There is one negative on this collection. I normally like when an artist puts tracks in chronological order because this allows me to hear how the artist progressed over time. Unfortunately, this collection does not do so. It would have been a great strength if this had been done on this collection.

The liner notes include the lyrics to the new song - "Again". The songwriting credits as well as what album the song is included on are also included in the liner notes. Overall, this is as solid a Greatest Hits album as it gets. The only other negative may be as Kravitz continues to have success, this album might someday be eclipsed by a more current Greatest Hits portfolio.

4 out of 5 stars Good Place to Start People!!!!!.......2005-11-16

I had this album for quite some time and thought to myself that I should finally place my input on this. I had met Lenny Kravitz in the Bahamas ten years ago during the Christmas holiday and it was great to shake his hands. We are lucky to be alive to hear the work of this man. He's one of these artists' that are out there who puts so much of what is lacking in performance of contemporary sound and that is FEELING. It blows my mind the criticism he's received accusing him of robbing the stylistic graves of his idols - excuse me? So do hundreds of other artists who can't even hold a candle in tribute no matter how hard their effort or sincerity. THIS is a man who takes whatever influences and MAKES THEM HIS OWN. I have no problem whatsoever picking out a riff or musical inflection out of any of his works in recognition of his predecessors. He writes, produces, and most impressive plays almost all instruments on his recordings. Like back in the 70's, where there were numerous groups with plenty of organic vibes.
If you don't have this CD or any of his CDs, I recommend picking this one up. It also includes a never before released song called Again that I am sure you heard back in the day and loved. Lenny's greatest hits is a great introduction to his music, it has all his best songs, all his great rock songs like 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' 'Fly Away' and 'American Woman' it also has the best of his soul work like 'I Belong To You' and 'Heaven Help' but you also get a few funky numbers like 'Always On The Run' and 'Black Velvetine' this a great way for anyone to get into him, you'll see once you hear this album your gonna want more.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent Compilation.......2005-08-19

If you don't have any Kravitz record, just purchase this item and you know who is he.

This record compile great songs of his music life including a new song (Again').

5 out of 5 stars Truly his greatest!.......2005-07-05

On Baptism, his seventh album, Lenny Kravitz writes, arranges, performs, and produces every track. The trouble with working alone is that there's little quality control; some of the songs here really could have benefited from a bit of that. Not to say that Baptism is a complete dud of an album, indeed, the worst thing about it is its awful cover. "California" has a catchy, power-pop bounce that's actually reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne, with its fuzzy guitars and handclaps, as well as its un-Kravitz-like short running time (just over two-and-a-half minutes). But then "Sistamamalover" veers deep into Prince territory, with a groove that's too contrived, too dull, and too long. And there's some of the self-indulgence of a satisfied, middle-aged rocker apparent on "Minister of Rock & Roll" and "I Don't Want to Be a Star" (it's easy to sing about wanting only "a Chevy and an old guitar" when you're living in a massive mansion). The best tracks are the most straightforward, fun ones: the aforementioned "California," the ZZ Top-inspired "Where Are We Runnin'?" and the Stones-sounding "Flash." Kravitz should loosen up more and leave the angst to the teenagers. --Robert Burrow

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-01-12

I had all but given up on Lenny Kravitz after Circus. I just happened to listen to this album on Rhapsody and fell in love with it. It is the Best Lenny Kravitz album since Mama Said. Thanks Lenny, for actually playing some nice rock music!

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great........2006-08-25

I picked this album up used at a record store for $6, and I think it's well worth it. I'd only heard "Lady" (pretty good) and "Where are we Runnin'?" (great), so I thought I'd get it. I like the album for about half the songs. I appreciate that Lenny does slow songs, but 6 out of 13 songs? I don't even find them very good slow songs. If they were good slow songs, I'd give this CD 5 stars, but no. The fast songs are really good, so why aren't the rest like that?

1. Minister of Rock 'N' Roll: 9.5/10 Perfect way to start the album.
2. I Don't Want To Be a Star: 7/10 I don't like his whiny voice in the intro and chorus, but the verses are good.
3. Lady: 8/10 Too long, and repetitive, but the solo is cool.
4. Calling All Angels: 5/10 Ugh. Slow, boring, lame lyrics, too long, etc. Skip this track.
5. California: 9/10 Fun song, good tune to dance to.
6. Sistamamalover: 9/10: Nice funky feel to the song, but odd lyrics.
7. Where Are We Runnin'?: 10/10 Awesome. Heavy bass, heavy guitar, good verses.
8. Baptized: 7/10 Bad verses, good chorus.
9. Flash: 9.5/10 I love this song. Again, odd lyrics, but good.
10. What Did I Do With My Life?: 7/10 Lenny sounds like Elvis Costello in this song. But it doesn't help.
11. Storm: 9/10 Another funky song, but this has Jay-Z, so it's even better.
12. The Other Side: 6.5/10 Wow. This sounds just like all the other piano ballads on this album.
13. Destiny: 6.5/10 Sub-par defines this song. Lenny with an acoustic guitar and a falsetto. Almost worse than it sounds.

Overall: 103/130=79%, hence the 4 stars. If you like Kravitz, pick this up used.

3 out of 5 stars So So.......2006-05-23

First of all, Im a huge Kravitz fan, I have all his albums ooops, did I say that, I meant cds. I love his throwback, late 60's-7o's funky/rock/soul style. But I am sad to say that Baptism did not impress me that much, like his earlier stuff did. Sure, there are a couple of songs I dig on Baptism, but as a whole, I have to say I dont like it all. I like Sistamammalover, and R and R Minister. That Angel song bored me to death. I had to skip it and go to the next song, because the first time I was listening to it, I was driving, and almost fell asleep. Baptism is not his best. Come on Lenny, get back to that funky/soulful stuff you do so well...

5 out of 5 stars Very happy.......2005-12-23

Very happy with cd and service

5 out of 5 stars "You just don't know how to groove, white boy.".......2005-10-09

"Sistamamalover" is one of the finest soul tunes since the theme to Good Times! "California" sounds like the boy is fondly reminiscing to his pre-teen days, and it makes you want to move there now. "Minister of Rock & Roll" is full more music than anyone can catch on their first 5 listenings. Overall, even the weakest tunes on this disc are 4 star -- buy it, and worship with Lenny!

    Album Description

Arguably, the most heartwarming moment of the 2001 concert film The Original Kings of Comedy arrives when comedian Steve Harvey, expounding on the joys of '70s R&B in a hip hop world, signals the concert sound man, who begins to play snippets of old-school love songs.

When the Lenny Williams' classic "Cause I Love You" comes up - particularly the part where Lenny, in an anguished, drama-filled soliloquy, declares his undying love for his woman - the audience goes absolutely crazy, and Harvey's point, that old school soul is the music you turn to when you want the real deal, is valiantly made.

But then, for more than two decades, singer/songwriter Lenny Williams has diligently - distinctively - made that point. As disposable pop music trends and the one-hit-wonders they manifest come and go, Williams, first as lead singer of the legendary band Tower of Power and then as a solo artist, has done his own thing with dedication, consistence and a whole lotta heart.

I've loved Lenny Williams' singing since.... His first solo album had a song stating "I'd rather hurt myself that to ever hurt you" which I've been trying to find for YEARS!!! Could I possibly have help finding that song or even contacting someone else who remembers it?

Back when it took a computer the size of the Pentagon to do long division, Lenny Bruce was the personification of hypertext, connecting ideas through puns, jokes, impressions, and the weaving together of complex tales. As Don Friedman says in his spoken introduction to this prestigious gig by America's (then) "nastiest" nightclub standup act, it's not Bruce that's nasty per se, but society. And while that's true, Bruce was dirty--a master of filth, from sexual innuendo to dirty words. In addition to all that heavy stuff, he gives you everything that was totally funny in second grade and still is, including the shaggy-dog story. Sure, there's a lot going on; you have to listen to it a dozen times to get the hushed-breath synaptic leaps uttered in between the big jokes that aim for the bleacher seats. This set is Lenny Bruce in rare form, at his most soberingly funny. --Mike McGonigal

I'm still waiting for a funny line from this icon of comedy.

After listening to it, and not laughing. I wonder if his lofty reputation is merely because he was persecuted and hounded so much for his so-called "obscene" language.

I feel sympathy for the horrors he experienced, but I don't find his act to be funny in this cd.

5 out of 5 stars A Critical and Hilarious Roadsign on the Highway of American Social History.......2005-11-02

It's a crying shame that this is now unavailable. In the opinion of this Brucephile, "The Carnegie Hall Concert" is the most valuable document of what was great about Lenny Bruce and why he mattered. From a performance standpoint, he was at the height of his powers. From a social standpoint, this show was just prior to the beginnings of his problems with the law and features the best balance of his comedy and social commentary. Earlier than this, he was a bit "schticky" (as he often said himself). After the trials began, his understandable preoccupation with legalities began to imbalance his act (though he remained fascinating). Here, you get the undiluted best. I can't even pick out moments, because it should really be experienced as a whole. It's a 90-minute statement on where America stood in 1962, on the cusp of a social revolution, and it's brilliant.

Find this if you can. If you want to know why Lenny Bruce became an icon who deserves to be discussed alongside Kerouac, Kesey, Tom Wolfe, and Hunter S. Thompson; if you want a snapshot of our cultural mindset before the turbulence of the 60's erupted; or, if you just wanna laugh--Find this. Whatever it costs, it's a giveaway. It's a parchment of history.

5 out of 5 stars Lenny at his best...........2005-08-31

On February 3, 1961, in the middle of one of the worst blizzards in New York City's history, Lenny Bruce walked onstage to a packed house at Carnegie Hall and for two solid hours, gave what all Lennyphiles agree was the greatest performance of his all-too-brief career.

To the uninitiated, this CD is as good a place as any to discover the genius of Lenny Bruce. Even now, almost 45 years later, The Midnight Concert is still screamingly funny; A testiment to Lenny's depth as a social commentater and comic philosopher. This was two years before the onset of the physical and mental decline that would end with his death, at age forty, from an overdose of heroin on August 3, 1966.

Why is Lenny Bruce remembered as a brilliant comedian all these years later? The answer is right here.

    Happy listening!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Dirty Lenny..........2004-06-04

Like many jazz and blues musicians, Lenny Bruce was truly in his element when performing live. His studio recordings simply do not have the spontaneity of his live stuff. This is why his Carnegie Hall Concert is essential listening for any fan of Bruce or stand-up comedy in general. There would be no Eddie Izzard, Bill Hicks or a host of thousands of other comics without Lenny Bruce. He paved the way and was a pioneer.

Listening to this recording is to hear the man in his element, riffing off the crowd and going off on anything that came into his head. He zips all over the place and it is almost as if you can hear his mind at work, racing from topic to topic. While his material is dated at times, it is an incredible snapshot of the times he lived in. He brutually skewered social conventions (like how we refer to minorities) and was quite political as well. But most of all he was just damn funny and this performance shows him in great form.

This is easily one of the best live recordings of Lenny at his uncensored best. Before he got beaten down by endless obscenity trials and his slide in substance abuse. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars One More Note.......2002-02-01

When Lenny Bruce performed at Carnegie Hall, the cabs weren't even running in New York. It was one of the worst snow storms that ever hit The City. Nobody could get out. Bruce filled the freaking hall...check out the liner notes. Even Jesus would have had a problem filling that gig up...maybe that's why the Church at large got so... off about the man, maybe not. Maybe it was just before 200 channels of cable showing nothing.

Lenny Kravitz is still obsessed with the '70s, and for good reason: he's found endless inspiration in the work of Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, and a decade's worth of soul men. Kravitz hasn't lost the funk on 5, but the sound here drifts dangerously close to the Me decade's shallowest end, when disco seemed to rob R&B of its soul. So the passion Kravitz has shown on early albums is strangely diluted (aside from the album-closing epic "Can We Find a Reason?"). 5 is the singer's first foray into digital technology, but despite a few modern effects at the edges, he's doing essentially the same as before--only colder. --Steve Appleford

4 out of 5 stars One that came out of the ashes on the official death of R&R........2005-04-29

The year was 1998. Country's in turmoil as it's president whitewashes an intern's dress, and impeachment hearings have all the democrats leave the Capital. Rather bummer year indeed. It was a bummer for me personally, and it was also a bummer for rock and roll. To me this is when Rock and Roll officially died. In 1998 I got the heartbreak when I found out that Rob Halford was homosexual, alot of the music was also dying as Pearl Jam's album that year had (Gulp) strings in one of the songs, alot of the alternative groups were going more techno ala Marlyn Manson, and Jerry Cantrell in no uncertain terms made it official; Alice In Chains was done. Megadeth released an album that no one really cared about since they hadn't done anything in almost 4 years, Metallica's still trying to tone down the thrash to keep up, and now the airwaves are being dominated with safe alternative bands on the airwaves, or it's Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, or Eminem. This is one of the albums that was saved from the fires of killing rock and roll. The circus album fizzled, but so did Lenny when he took part in the Kiss tribute album. Never strip down "Duece". Well anyway after almost 2 and half years away from it all. He returns with "5". I enjoyed listening, but I found it to be too focused and yet so disorganized at the same time. I love "Fly Away" which is vintage Lenny, but with some polish. Then you have my other real favorite song "I Belong To You". It's got more techno on it, and the guitar is more stripped down, but it's a pleasant sounding love song as I know it can get me in the mood anywhere; whether on a country road with my woman, or on a beach hotel in Malibu, or Honolulu. With a girl, and that song on the radio it's the perfect sex aphrodesiac. However, I feel that Lenny in his soul searching tried to stretch too much funk, techno, and rock as he would do with "American Woman". To me he should've done his best Randy Bachman guitar stunts it would've appealed to me more. I don't know what more he could've done with the album I mean it ranks up there with "Let Love Rule" as one of my favorite Lenny albums. I just feel he was pulling all the stops as he was trying to reinvent himself. A little advice Lenny. Don't let one bad album get you down. Still good, but as from the "Circus" album the one song was truly prophetic; "Rock and Roll is dead." As I said 1998 was a bummer year where the cynicism ran high, and everyone wanted to see people embarrass themselves on Jerry, or following the exploits of the country it wasn't a fun time then, and it still isn't now.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice C.D.!.......2005-02-19

My son LOVES this book. In a bookcase filled with many many books he almost always gravitates to this one. I also think it is great, the drawings are whimsical and sometimes graphic but it is all put together in a way meant to dispell anxieties in a young child - hence "Everyone Poops". I strongly recommend this book to all who have a sense of humor, and a free mind on bodily functions. It is worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent with some good moments.......2005-01-19

I like Lenny's earlier records........after the success of this record his next albums are more him tryin' to be prince. He's should go back to makin' more good ole rock albums. I mean what the hell was up with "DIG IN?"
PS: The 10 year old hippy who was talkin' about lobsters is a fag. Yeah I too feel bad for lobsters and many other animals we tend to treat unfairly but this is suppossed to be a CD REVIEW not a discussion about animal rights, you fin' loser.

    4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2004-11-05

I think personally this a good cd. I love the different guitar sounds. Every song seems different to me. It's a good collection of songs. Some I don't like, but I do like Take Time ... the guitar on the song is excellent as well as on American Woman ... even after Austin Powers, I can still listen to the song as it was my first time listening to it.

Sometimes it's fun to take the albums of latter-day rockers and play spot-the-influence, and on Mama Said, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. "Always on the Run," with its punchy horns and emphatic vocals, is cribbed from Sly Stone. "What Goes Around Comes Around," with its understated arrangement and Kravitz's falsetto, is straight out of Superfly-era Curtis Mayfield. "Stand By My Woman" and "All I Ever Wanted," meanwhile, are so directly copped from John Lennon--lyrically, sonically, attitudinally--that it ought to be actionable. Younger fans might not care about any of this, of course, because in and of themselves, Kravitz's songs are tuneful, and they do rock. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Lenny Always Stands By His Influences.......2006-10-10

Lenny Kravitz:flower child throwback who, like Prince and Terence Trent D'Arby before him used the bi racial/multi instrumentalist/eclectic style to his best advantage. What does Lenny Krzvitz have that's different from those two artists?Simple-his sound is unapologetically retro.Unlike other retro artists though Lenny even copies the production style, right down to the analog tapes he swears by.That being said 'Mama Said',although recorded in 1991 at the peak of the new jack and grunge revolutions might as well have been recorded in 1973 because there are no synthesizers or heavy electronics on this album-it's ALL live instrumentation. And while very imatative of his influences-namely John Lennon,Curtis Mayfield,Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone those are the best influences to have and he makes their own sounds even better!Much of the CD has the feel of an epic album lengh excursion."Fields Of Joy","The Difference Is Why" and "When The Morning Turns To Night" all have superb arrangements and, uncharacteristically for Kravitz do blend his influences into a cohesive whole, althought still a highly retro neo psychedelic one."Always On The Run" is a slashing funk jam right out of the Sly/Funkadelic school of psychelic funk with punchy horns and Lenny's rowdy singing. Two of the best songs are very Lennon inspired-"Stand By Your Woman" and "All I Ever Wanted",the latter of which actually features Sean Lennon as a guest writer and lyricist. On Lenny's voice however the Lennon-style vocal reverb sounds a lot heavier.Of course one of the two most impressive songs here is the big hit "It Ain't Over Til It's Over",a classic Philly/Chicago soul type ballad with a nice midtempo beat.Lenny's falsetto is beautiful, the arrangement is in the pocket and you can even dance to it-I think it's my favorite Kravitz song. The other is another kind of soul-a very Curtis Mayfield sounding "What Goes Around Comes Around"-I have to give Lenny credit for his DEAD ON Mayfield vocal impression, that is until Karl Denson goes WILD on the sax and the whole songs turns into a totally free jazz extravaganza."Flowers For Zoe" is another song here that's great-a very folksy soul kind of feal with a nice gentle vocal.Overall 'Mama Said' is enough to give Kravitz detractors (and there are an awful lot) a sense that given the proper musical balance Kravitz would be able to synthesize all of his many musical ideas and shadings into something cohesive and distinctly his.But that hardly matters since it seems, especially if an artist is not caucasion (and even if they are) that they will immediately be accused of ripping off or too heavily borrowing from their influences and since this style seems to be such a big part of who Lenny Kravitz is he takes even more flack for it then many. But 'Mama Said' actually does a lot to bring out the many talents and amazing songwriting of Kravitz and gives probably the best impression of him available.

    4 out of 5 stars Love Lenny.......2006-02-25

This is the first cd of Lenny Kravitz that I bought many years ago but lost in a divorce. I just recently replaced it and love it just as much as when I first heard it. Lenny rocks! His new stuff is awesome too

5 out of 5 stars The Difference Is Why.......2005-09-20

I believe an artist produces his best work when he is struggling through personal issues, In Love/Out of Love, or in some deep introspection. Its all of the above with this awesome album by Lenny Kravitz. He fuses 60's/early 70's acoustic soul and rock like I've never heard anyone do before. An excellent voice, heartfelt lyrics and a acoustic makes this album much different than others. Buy, don't copy or download this album. Why? The difference is why.

    5 out of 5 stars Better than Lenny's debut???????.......2004-12-05

Very little reviews for such a popular artist.

And all I ask is why? As far as I'm concerned, this was Lenny at his apex. His debut release quenched my thirst for music which wasn't being released at the time. Mama Said, in turn, was more complete and a much crisper sound.

Sure there are influences throughout this release.......but what record doesn't have them? When I saw the "It ain't over.." video. I for one was thinking The Doors "Touch Me" video.

    Other favorites;

    Stand By My Woman
    All I Ever Wanted
    Fields of Joy

Not a bad track on here and nothing corporate at all.

For those who know what I'm talking about.......this WAS Lenny at his best......just like REM...just like U2....they all drifted from what got them there, to just putting out music having a catchy riff to apparently satisfy the record co's. I will assume this comes with age???

A pure rock and roll classic in my book!

5 out of 5 stars Sound Over Substance.......2004-07-10

Lenny Kravitz's affection for the '60s and '70s runs much deeper than mere matters of his retro attire, or even his songwriting; deeply involved in the production of his own albums, he is, for instance, militantly in favor of analog recording methods that use tubes rather than transistors. Many newcomer's have failed at this unorthodox technique. The mistake is foolishly assumed that the method is perfected by just turning the reverb off - goes from the microphone to the amplifiers to compressors into EQ units that have tubes and back to the tape machine. Lenny has simply perfected a lost art.

Mama Said contains elements of Curtis Mayfield and Jimi Hendrix and Lenny's obsessions of Prince and John Lennon. Treading away from the psychedelic fixations of his debut, Lenny orchestrates his influences flawlessly - Mama Said sounds like it was recorded in 1972. The production is so carefully done that from start to finish the entire record captivates listeners - sweet soul and fuzzy hard rock. Mama Said demands repeat and is certainly a aural treat.

The addictive Philly-Soul sound of "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" is simply spellbinding. Though the rhythm is based around Earth Wind & Fire's "Thats The Way Of The World," it seduces listeners with sweeping strings, seductive horns, and lush arrangements to the deep rhythms. The number is smoother - even slicker - than anything Lenny has ever recorded. Most listeners will be pressed to believe Lenny wrote it himself. He successfully duplicates Curtis Mayfield on the extremely catchy "What Goes Around Comes Around" - which is possessed by a deep, dark groove, trademarked wah-wah guitar, stinging brass, and silky falsetto.

Sly & The Family Stone collide with Jimi Hendrix on the rampaging "Always On The Run" and retro Lenny displays his Lennon obsession with perfection on the brilliant "All I Ever Wanted" - which Sean Ono Lennon co-wrote and plays piano on. "Stand by My Woman" also borrows Lennon's signature echo-delayed vocals/piano signature for its verses, but shifts into lush harmony soul for the chorus. Often billed as the "divorce album," Mama Said is the srongest set of Lenny songs to date, with little filler and a close ear to getting that perfect sound. Though some of the lyrics have been painfully outdated, it doesn't really matter. Mama Said is just that great to listen to - it's a near flawless sound.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2007-07-17

I really enjoyed this recording. The guitar work is inspiring, as are the drums. Heavy Metal Monster is one of my favs and is a great metallic guitar track. The overall theme of the album resounds through each piece, which provides a nice warm, yet spacey trip. Alot of reviews point to a Billy Cobham imitation, but I find if I just take the recording for what it is, the beauty becomes very apparent. Listen as a listener, not as a critic, and your ears will show you the way.

    4 out of 5 stars Sci-fi progressive/jazz/funk/fusion? Works for me..........2007-01-16

You can say that the theme of this album is corny and dated, or that "Universal Love" is out-of-place and cheesy here, or that funk and progressive don't mix. But this is a very enjoyable, well-played, well-composed album despite the hurdles it faced. Lenny White plays excellent drums (and some synthesizers) all over this album, along with Don Blackman (vocals, keyboards), Alex Blake (bass), and Nick Moroch and Jeff Sigman (guitars). This is mostly progressive rock/jazz fusion (a la "Romantic Warrior"), with some funk thrown in on the side. Despite the less-than-desirable production sound, I still find this to be a very exciting, interesting and unique cd from a talented drummer and songwriter. If you're a fan of Romantic Warrior-era Return To Forever, this cd is essential.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
    Music quality = 8.3/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 7/10; CD length = 8/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.2 ("4 stars")

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Drumming.......2005-08-17

Lenny White ranks among the top drummers in the business. This 70's release is a great showcase for his skill. All the pieces are linked together in a kind of story that takes place as the 'pirates' rocket through space. The cover art illustrates each piece in a "graphic novel" or comic book type panel.
The music is jazz rock fusion, providing a lot or room for some amazing grooves and unbelievably fast sweeps across the drum kit ("as in Assault"). "Prelude" creates an ethereal the atmosphere and sets up tension leading into "Pursuit". A few of the tunes are dated now by arrangements that feature "Return to Forever" type instrumentation and sections of sappy 70's disco style 'woo-woo-woo' and dooby-dooby-doo-blah' lyrics. But the tracks travel through a wide range of moods and music settings and once they get away from the lyrics, the tightly punctuated pieces are great to listen to.
Personal favorites: Pursuit (except disco lyric section), The Great Pyramid, a short jazz piece called "Remembering", "Stew, Cabbage & Galactic Beans", "Heavy Metal Monster", the amazing "Assault", and the final track "Climax: Theme for the Astral Pirates".

5 out of 5 stars Astral Pirates .......2005-07-19

One of the seventys truly great fusion masterpieces! My vinal copy is truly worn so to here this recording all spiffed up is a real pleasure to the ears! The electric guitarist(Nick Moroch) on this cd is a lead playing monster,I,m a guitarist myself and testify that Nick is one of the unsung guitar heros of all time!everything about this cd is 5 stars. Enjoy!! Provo Pete

    5 out of 5 stars Not What I Suspected!.......2005-03-07

'Lenny White's Adventures Of Astral Pirates' is the drummer's fourth solo album and I was very skeptical right from the start. My first Lenny White CD purchase was 'Streamline' and that's probably my favorite of all his albums, and between CD's and vinyl I have most of them, including this one.I am not a huge fan of White's early solo albums-he spends a great deal of time imitating Billy Cobham's spastic fusion drumming style and fills every available space with his instrumentation-much as he also did with Return To Forever. So on 'Astral Pirates' his drumming is very loud, but at the same time is more controlled and explores the sci-fi theme of this music. And the louder numbers are also saddled with simple funk numbers that came to full flower on the next outing. Not only that but this is probably his better crafted material thus far, even the fusion pieces. The presence of more vocals on this album gives White's music a sense of individuality that it didn't tend to have earlier when he was trying to imitate the styles of other fusion drummers instead of working on being his own musician. So in the end I have a vinyl LP copy of this album (not the Wounded Bird CD issue spoken of) but an album is an album and for all interested I strongly suggest that for a good introduction to early Lenny White you should pick this up-it's a great sampler from his fusion side rather then his funk side. For that I suggest 'Streamline'.

The irony of Are You Gonna Go My Way is that, by the release of his third album, Lenny Kravitz had finally started internalizing the influences of his musical heroes--Curtis Mayfield, Prince, John Lennon, and Sly Stone--who had been so nakedly copped on Let Love Rule and Mama Said. So what becomes the album's big hit? The title track, a Jimi Hendrix rip-off if there ever was one. Kravitz backslides elsewhere, too: "Is There Any Love in Your Heart" is plainly drawn from Led Zeppelin and "Eleutheria" from Bob Marley, while "Believe" takes a more inventive approach--its chorus is in the style of the Beatles, while the verses and guitar solo again recall Led Zep. What's especially damning about the album though, is that the more Kravitz strikes out on his own, the more lackluster his songs become, evidenced by the dippy come-on "Black Girl" and the weak psychedelia of "My Love." --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars And I'm not even a Lenny Kravitz fan........2006-12-27

This is one of the most well-rounded, well-done albums in history. I still listen to this album and it has not lost anything. Let me know when you're stranded on an island and I'll send this CD to you in a bottle....and again, I'm not even a Kravitz fan....don't listen to the main reviewer.

4 out of 5 stars Weird looks at Lenny.......2004-10-31

It's hard to follow lenny album to album only to see people mentioning his abundant influences in a bad way. Lenny sounds like zeppelin, lenny sounds like lennon, lenny sounds like mayfield. There are so many bands and artists out there who do the same, in my opinion with less personal flare, and enthusiasm, but which are welcomed or even praised for it. Lenny is in a way like the kid in highschool who always gets frowned on for doing something even though he did the same thing that another kid was or will be welcomed for doing.

Poor lenny, it makes me feel bad for him. Because he really is a talented artist, as it can be seen in "let love rule" and "mama said", and even here, and it makes me wonder where he could have gone if he had more positive incentive, which i feel he justly deserved from his environment, for doing what seems to enjoy doing most, which is making more good music of the kind he likes to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars One of his better cds.......2003-12-28

In order to like Lenny Kravitz you have to have a wide range of musical tastes because Lenny is all over the map on this one. Heres the tracks:
AYGGMW- title track always reminded me of Hendrix when i first heard it. this was a huge hit and it deserved to be. this song proves that Lenny Kravitz is one of the best drummers in rock.
BELIEVE- starts off with kind of a Zeppelin keyboard.has a great melody great harmonies and excellent buildup ending
COME ON AND LOVE ME- more great drumming from Lenny but not really a great song
HEAVEN HELP- nice piano work from Hirsch, Lenny does his Michael Jackson impression. nice+ mellow
JUST BE A WOMAN- another Plastic Ono Band ripoff with exact Lennon drum beat and sound
IS THERE ANY LOVE IN YOUR HEART-maybe the best song on here , a total rocker with great falsetto singing from Lenny
BLACK GIRL-another favorite with some weird production effects that probably sound great when stoned
MY LOVE- a bare bones stoner song , very 70s
SUGAR-a poor ripoff of It aint over til its over
SISTER- starts off with some noise from an amp and continues til the guitar comes in , pretty cool song trying to sound alittle more important than it really is
ELEUTHERIA- boring reggae song that sounds like every other reggae song ive heard

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks........2003-09-17

After reading an editorial review on Lenny's album Are You Gonna Go My Way, me being a die-hard Lenny Kravitz fan, I had to comment against the cruel words.

First of all, how many artists out there can say that they have not had any other musical influences while writing their own music? If you listen closely to most popular music of today, it pretty much all sounds alike...that is probably why it is called "Popular Music". Although this album does have songs that have similarities to other artists, the majority of the songs were written, arranged and even produced by Lenny Kravitz! Like an editor said in his review "Believe takes a more inventive approach--its chorus is in the style of the Beatles..." yes, some of the songs do emulate the artists that inspire him but the key words here are "in the STYLE of the Beatles". But don't take away Lenny's credibility and ability to write his own songs by writing such harsh opinions. But now I would like to express my views on not only this album but also on Lenny as an artist.

Can you find me an artist that does not have music that reflects their influences? It is highly unlikely. Music is a source of inspiration, and influence. Musicians always have an influence and it will always be seen and heard through their craft. If anything, the fact that after hearing Lenny's album, you were reminded of artists such as the Beatles or Led Zepplin and Bob Marley, is a positive thing. To be in the same caliber of those artists is truly a compliment. Lenny can sound like other artists...but no one can sound like Lenny.

Although I have been a Lenny fan since long before the Are you Gonna Go My Way album, I must admit, that this album was probably the one that really made me open my eyes and ears to Lenny as an artist. His songs may sound familiar, but are definitely done in LENNY'S own way. He takes a sound, and makes it better. He perfects it. He takes a familiarity and gives it his own Lenny flare. He gives critics something to talk about.

I admire Lenny for being compared to other artists, but at the same time making his own music, writing his own lyrics, and playing many instruments unlike many of the artists today, which of course so many critics completely fail to mention. I will always love Lenny's music, his albums and will always "go his way"!

The Are You Gonna Go My Way album rocks.
