4 out of 5 stars good, most accessible, but not their best.......2007-04-13

Elbow's third album is a grower. It is better produced than its predecessor, Cast of Thousands, which was wonderful but rather murky. Leaders of the Free World is not Elbow's best or most defining work, or their most consistent, but it is probably their most accessible.

The record is largely a collection of ballads, bookended by the slow builds of Station Approach and Great Expectations (Puncture Repair, the final number, is a cute coda "about friendship," according to lead singer Guy Garvey); anchored by the stomping anthemic Forget Myself; and diminished only by the title track, which is fine politically but musically is a disorganized mess.

Gone are the gossipy numbers of Cast of Thousands or the itchy, dissatisfied smoke-filled-pub themes from Elbow's debut Asleep in the Back. They have largely been ditched--Picky Bugger aside--in favor of more traditional themes of love, jealousy, and heartbreak. But Garvey remains one of today's more clever lyricists. "I'm not superstitious but if I can get this ball in the basket then he'll wake up dead," he pouts in Mexican Standoff.

And yes, I will address the Peter Gabriel and Coldplay comparisons, since they seem to be mandatory. Garvey's delivery is indeed a hybrid of Gabriel and Chris Martin, though he sounds more everyman and bloke-ish, and thus more accessible, than either of them. Elbow does evoke Coldplay in its exquisite layering of guitars and pianos and general British sensibilities. But the comparisons end there. This is, emotionally, musically, truly unique material that is all its own.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the debut!.......2006-12-30

Although I loved the debut album, this 3rd album is even better. Very solid melodies, arrangements, and lyrics throughout!

4 out of 5 stars Great album, but can the political rhetoric.......2006-03-31

Elbow is a great band and very unique. The only thing Elbow has in common with Coldplay is that they're both from Britain and both write at mediocre tempos with nice recognizable melodies. No song sounds like Coldplay. Moving on. I'm not a fan of politically charged albums either because it can somewhat alienate your crowd and musicians are here to entertain and to move you emotionally. Politics moves us emotionally already. Moving on. The music on this album is beautiful and sometimes really rockin...just like their previous albums. There are no real surprises...in fact, it's probably a bit more accessible to the average listener than their previous efforts. If you're curious about Elbow, this is a good starter.

4 out of 5 stars a noble follow up..........2006-03-16

Not as epic as "Asleep in the Back", but still very good.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Pop Ballad Band With Familiar Voice.......2006-02-25

This is a strong pop ballad band and this third album, Leaders of the Free World, is the best place to start because it has their most accessible melodies and the perfect mix of slow-tempo and mid-tempo pop ballads, which will draw comparisons, musically, to Coldplay and, vocally, to Peter Gabriel. Don't let these comparisons bother you. Elbow is not a copy band. Their sound comes from their own authenticity and I believe those similarities are unintentional. If you're looking for a bright sounding pop ballad alternative band that sounds like no one, check out the beatufilly romantic pop band from Sweden, Ronderlin.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, multi-layered, epic work........2006-04-02

Elbow manages to create music that is at once troubling, atmospheric and transcendently beautiful. The songs on this album are rooted in the quite ordinary experiences of their lives and loves. In this band's hands, though, they seem to shimmer and glow like few albums you'll ever hear. The production is lavish and georgeous, the musicianship is fine and the Guy Garvey's lyrics manage to express a crushing sense of longing (My Very Best), a deep despair (Station Approach, Leaders of the Free World), and an extraordinary range of other emotions while rarely rising above a whisper.

While they have been compared with ColdPlay (lyrics, lavish musical climaxes) and Doves (lush and spacey productions) they are really a force to be reckoned with all on their own. I listen to almost everything on Rhapsody these days and buy few albums but this is one I had to have for "the archives."

Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid........2007-05-13

A great, solid album by Elbow- I wouldn't expect anything less. People should stop comparing them to other bands... they're just Elbow and they just sound good. I guess you could say I'm a sucker for piano-influenced rock, but I love this album. Best tracks: "Forget Myself," "The Stops," "Great Expectations," "Puncture Repair."

I recommend this band to fans of Doves, Editors, and Turn Breaks.

3 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-04-19

This by no means is a bad record. Its just not the Elbow that I was expecting. If you follow from Asleep in the Back to Cast of Thousands, there is a progression of sound. This record just doesnt follow the Elbow sound that I like, I guess. I really like the last track. I know it's only about a minute or so, but it's got alot of feeling. Im really curious as to where they will go from here. Hopefully a little more experimental than this record.

5 out of 5 stars Finally grown up music.......2007-04-10

This is my introduction to Elbow. The CD is a mix of love songs and lamentation over the state of the world. Elbow combines interesting melodies and thoughtful lyrics making this CD the best I've heard in years!

5 out of 5 stars Manchester's Finest !!.......2006-04-10

Manchester has a lot to answer for, incluidng the brilliant Elbow who have crafted a superb album with the grace of swans on a placid lake and a thunderstrom on a summer evening. Their contribution to Manchester music is now a living legend. Garvey's haunting voice and music talent is on top form with the Potter's doing brilliant job. All tracks are superb, however my favourite is "Foregt Myself" with superb tracks such as "Mexican standoff", "Great expectations" and "Station Approach". Simply stated, just brilliant !!!

4 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations.......2006-03-30

The lead singer sounds like a morph of Peter Gabriel, Rob Dickinson, and sometimes even Nick Drake. I liked it the first time through and enjoy it more with each listen. I will probably get "Cast of Thousands" based on the strength of this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Buy Them For The B-Sides.......2006-01-15

Elbow,as i've said before, are absolute geniuses (for more information on this statement please read my review for the full length "Leaders Of The Free World" cd). They have made some of the most ecclectic yet approachable music of the new century. Their b-sides are no different. Most bands will take what they consider disposable tracks and throw them on their singles and expect people to pay 10 to 15 dollars a shot for them. Elbow has actually made quality songs that would fit perfectly on any of their albums and made them bonus tracks on their singles. Some of their best tunes (Brave New Shave, Lay Down Your Cross, The Good Day, to name a few) are all b-sides to singles. With that in mind the quality certainly continues here. "The Long War Shuffle" is not only a class track but it also serves as a perfect sequel to "Leaders Of The Free World" (Which, by the way, is presented here in a 3:50 edited version). The 2nd part to this single has the equally as good track "The Drunken Engineer". I have always been a huge fan of British music and of the b-side as well. With this release the two make a perfect pair.

5 out of 5 stars BEST ALBUM OF THE 21ST CENTURY So FAR.......2005-10-27

Elbow is a brilliant group. Their first album was one of the best debut albums ever. For their second album... they followed with a very unique and experimental effort and made a truely artistic album. NOW THIS.....
THis album is perfect. Nothing but great and powerful songs. All of which are catchy and have so much attitude you can't help but fall in love with these guys as a band.
Forget Myself is the first single and it paints a perfect picture for this album. This album says everything you wanna hear. "Mexican Standoff" and "Leaders of the free world" again are songs that just wanna make you get up and run around and weep at the fact that you can't write a song that good.
IT goes from these very energized songs... to ending with 3 of the most beautiful and sad songs.
If their last album was art, this one is perfecting it into another art form all together. Just can't say enough good things about this album. I am in Awe.

Any version of the album is a must have, but if you can find this more expenisive import, I suggest that you get it. It comes with a DVD that plays on any DVD player, that is like a video form of the album, but in a different order. It even includes a great song called "McGreggor" on the DVD, which for the life of me I can't figure out is not on the album. This is maybe my favorite song of the bunch. And by far the most raw and angry song these guys have ever done.

So to some up. Get this album and if you can get this version of it with the DVD. I think it is stupid the American version did not get the DVD too. (WHAT WERE THEY THINKING????) Other bands should do this type of thing with albums more often.
GO AND BUY THIS ALBUM RIGHT NOW. YOU WILL THANK ME FOR IT LATER.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent import.......2005-09-21

Aside from the fact that this is a moving new release from Manchester's Elbow this particular imported edition includes a DVD with videos for almost every song on the album (no video for 'An Imagined Afair' and 'My Very Best'). There is also a video for a great song (great video too) that does not appear on the album named 'McGreggor'.

Couple of important things however - the dvd is region 0 and PAL... meaning that it is not really made for US dvd players. Make sure your player can read/play/convert PAL and is not region encoded.

    5 out of 5 stars Scintillating stuff.......2006-02-18

Do hope discerning American listeners will ignore a recent (negative) Rolling Stone review of this latest from one of the very best Britpop groups. Like its 2 predecessors, this CD has the variety & consistency that most bands merely strive for. While they can drive a beat (see title cut), their contemplative numbers are wistful & never without memorable, ear-catching melody. This is stuff that stays with the listener-hopefully they'll find a niche on this side of the ocean

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-01-28

Elbow is a very down to earth Manchester band. The singer sounds a little like Peter Gabriel. Their musical landscape is diverse and hard to pin down. People like the fact that they are so unconventional and without category. I met them back in 2002. They have a drummer named Jupp. A few brothers in the band. As a group they have been playing for almost 15 years. Some of their other albums seemed somewhat commercial in comparison. This one seems the most free and easy. "Picky Bugger" is very eclectic and new. In the song "Forget Myself" he compares a bouncer to a Buddha with mace. "The Stops" is a very intimate folky song. The title song "Leaders of the Free World" is obviously about George Bush. It has that driving movement that you hear in many an Elbow song. It's mostly moody music with a European feel. A lot of brilliant touches.
