Customer Reviews:
Good but too weird, even for him!.......2007-03-13
i thought this was an interesting outing for bucket, but i just can't stand when he makes those weird noises with those supposed circuit bending sounds. i dont have much to say about it, other than its similar to cuckoo clocks but more noise and not enough shredding or nice slow guitar riffs, which i love by him. overall it was a decent album, can't complain too much, cause i love anything he does mostly. recommended for people with unstable conditions...just kidding, if u love bucket, try it out.
Experimental Cartoon Metal.......2006-11-27
Listening to Buckethead is the auditory equivalent of being drugged in a bar- you take an unsuspecting sip of your drink and get lost on your way to the bathroom chasing hallucinatory butterflies down the hallway.
To say that this is a strange album is an understatement- of course, we are talking about a man who wears a kabuki mask and KFC chicken bucket on his head. It's almost like a stream-of-consciousness experiment in what kind of bizarre effects he can use, or what kind of otherworldly, tortured sounds he can coax out of his battered guitar. Buckethead also seems to lack an attention span- most songs feature 10-20 different "riffs" or melodic ideas which seem to constantly mutate into the next weird, wacky idea. It almos sounds like an instrumental, even more experimental Primus with techno beats.
But is it good? Well.....that's a tough one. If you like avant-garde guitar music (like I do) that really pushes boundaries in an attempt to be completely unique, then yes. But honestly, it's just too different and erratic for most of the music-buying public. You won't be hearing this on the radio anytime soon. And maybe that's the point.
Hit and Miss.......2006-09-29
Im a big fan of Bucket's music, but this album doesn't do much for me. I liked Monsters and Robots, his Cobra Strike albums, and Cuckoo Clocks, but kaleidoscalp is too scattered and noise ridden even for Bucket. With the exception of few tracks (Android of Notre Dame for one) the album consists of severely disjointed songs filled with cuts to 'robot' sounds that destroy any chance of my enjoying the music. Too much messing around, Bucket, and not enough actual music. You rock, but not on this album. If you want hard shredding and pyrotechnics get a Cobra Strike album or Cuckoo Clocks. They're much better.
look through the kalideoscalp and see the blood curdle..........2006-05-31
with "island of lost minds" bucket took his playing level to new heights in adventurous scope and creative technicality;"kalideoscalp" is on the same line and is a grand showcase of his skills! hell, john zorn invited him to be on his label so that says something right there! the music goes from frantic to mutated static, power metal("the andriod of notre dame" which was actually his tribute to slain guitarist dimebag darrel),funk chicken-pickin interludes, and ambient soundscapes that weave in and out of sanity's reach. if you're a fan,get it,if you're curious check out all of bucket's work and ask questions on his forums so you don't get scared off,heh-huh!
Masked Man With KFC Bucket On Head.......2006-01-25
Wow! Being fairly new to the music of Buckethead I was very impressed by this release. His music reminds me a bit of an updated version of Zappa. Of course his guitar style is his own, but his writing is complex and bizzare. Anyone who wears a white mask and a KFC bucket on his head has really got something challenging and unique going on! There is humor in music! If you like great guitar playing and challenging but enjoyable songs, then you will enjoy Mr. Buckethead.
