Like the prog-rock movement that spawned them, the band name Yes was only supposed to be temporary. But Yes have long outlived prog, spanning five decades, some 14 members, and, at one point, essentially two separate outfits on opposite sides of the Atlantic. This five-disc box set chronicles the musical high points of one of the most successful, if unlikely, careers in all of rock. While contemporaries like ELP and King Crimson often distilled their jazz, classical, or avant-garde influences into potent, often jagged sonic shards, Yes thrived by infusing influences as diverse as Stravinsky, Lennon and McCartney, traditional jazz, the Fifth Dimension, and Paul Simon with their own restless, endlessly ambitious musicianship, then letting them simmer into musical landscapes often as vast as they were lyrically impenetrable. All the band's early staples are here ("Yours Is No Disgrace," "Starship Trooper," "I've Seen All Good People," "Roundabout") along with intact swatches of the epics Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer. But the later chapters are equally rewarding: the improbable 1980 replacement of departed Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman by the Buggles' Trevor Horn and Geoff Downs on Drama; the return of Anderson (with Horn and and new guitarist Trevor Rabin sharing producer's duties) for the surprising, megaplatinum success of 90125 and its chart-topping "Owner of a Lonely Heart"; rewarding, diverse '90s outings like Talk and The Ladder. It's a compelling musical vision that's almost utopian, sprinkled with a half-dozen previously unreleased tracks and the epic 1972 reworking of Paul Simon's "America." Chris Welch and Bill Martin's comprehensive and insightful notes are introduced by film director and longtime Yes fan Cameron Crowe, who reminisces about his early days writing about the band. YES THERE ARE SOME MISSING SONGS. "IN A WORD YES (1969-)" IS A NICE WELL ROUNDED YES HISTORY .......................2007-07-09

IN A WORD: YES. IN TWO WORDS: NEARLY PERFECT !.......2007-03-18
A Stuunning Boxed Set. Ideal For The Beginning Yes Fan........2007-01-07
Unlike those aforementioned counterparts, Yes never quite had the impact that they had, despite being just as good as them. It's a shame, because in their prime, Yes were brilliant. And even once they fell from their artistic as well as commercial crest, they still produced solid music.
For proof of this, look no further than the 5 cd boxed set "In A Word: Yes (1969). Complete with many Yes classics, lesser known album tracks and a rarity or two, this is the ideal Yes compilation, regardless of price. The sound quality on every song is astonishing (for those who can't stand hearing "Roundabout" for the millionth time, just give it one more spin just to hear it sound better than ever), and the liner notes, complete with excellent essays by Cameron Crowe (who used two classic Yes tunes in my favorite movie, "Almost Famous"), Chris Welch and Bill Martin, are a dream come true for Yes fans.
This boxed set is definitely bar none the finest Yes collection on the market, and should appeal to both die hards and new fans. Should you buy this set? In a word: YES!
Just about all the Yes you could ever want ... and more!.......2006-02-14
