Editorial Reviews
'The Hunter' was released 5 years after her breakthru with 'Famous Blue Raincoat', which finally landed her a berth on the Private Music artist roster. It is a varied affair with several songs given by Todd Rundgren, Donald Fagen and mentor Leonard Cohen (who puts in another guest appearance) as well as self penned material. It's the voice that matters, and hers is crystalline.

Though Ian Hunter hit his popular peak in the 1970s, as the frontman for Mott the Hoople and with solo favorites such as "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Cleveland Rocks," fans who have followed his career ever since will find him in fine form here. Co-produced by Hunter and Andy York (guitarist for John Mellencamp), the album mixes the hard-crunching rock 'n' roll, literate lyricism, bittersweet balladry, and self-deprecating humor that have long marked Hunter's best work. Musically, both "Stretch" and the piano-driven "How's Your House" have the dynamics of Mott (though the latter was inspired by the aftermath of Katrina), while "When the World Was Round" and "I Am What I Hated When I Was Young" find Hunter in older-and-wiser mode. After "Brainwashed" attacks consumer culture with a feverish immediacy, Hunter finds soul-stirring redemption in "Guiding Light." --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Van Morrison calls James Hunter "the best voice and best-kept secret in British R&B and soul." And the Colchester native and former busker does, indeed, sound like a one-man blue-eyed revival on his U.S. debut, People Gonna Talk. He navigates 14 self-penned ska (the title track), soul-blues ("Kick It Around"), and primal funk ("No Smoke Without Fire") tunes with panache. Hunter's voice unerringly carves out graceful melodies and soars into falsetto at whim over his horn-sparked band as he digs through his vast bag of traditional, stinging blues'n'soul licks on electric guitar. But... there's something missing. Although the disc was cut live in the studio, it lacks the vibrant energy of his stage performances. And Hunter borrows so extensively from his influences that he sounds like he's covering Bobby Bland, Howard Tate, James Brown, and the Studio One roster rather than traveling his own path. Nevertheless, as Morrison intimates, Hunter's estimable singing and playing will please fans of classic R&B and soul. --Ted DrozdowskiAlbum Description
"2006 Grammy Nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album of the Year""James is one of the best voices, and best kept secrets, in British R & B and soul. Check him out." -Van Morrison
On his U.S. debut, James Hunter proves to be a man of impeccable taste who has learned from his influences rather than simply imitating them. 'People Gonna Talk' features 14 original tracks written and arranged by Hunter, who partnered with producer Liam Watson to create a wonderfully rich, classic soul sound. The album was recorded at Watson's Toe Rag Studios in East London (also home to The White Stripes' 'Elephant'), where vintage analog equipment captured the warmth of Hunter's authentic and heartfelt sensibilities.

As AFI rode onto mainstream radio playlists with their gleaming major label debut, Sing the Sorrow, the rumble of disenchanted fans nearly drowned out that of their dark-hued music. But the heavily-tattooed San Francisco band aren't looking back on Decemberunderground, a slickly-produced, MTV-friendly disc brimming with sinister pop charms. The opening "Prelude 12/21" sets the upbeat tone with handclaps, strings, and a cheeky glam-rock stomp. AFI might still operate in that distinct area where punk, goth, and frightening stadium rock come together, only now they seem intent on crashing the retro '80s party attended by the likes of Franz Ferdinand and the Killers, with flashy tracks such as "Miss Muder" and the synth-heavy "Love Like Winter." "The Interview," meanwhile, is the closest Davey Havok has ever come to crooning a lighter-waving epic. Despite the odd lapse into the Cookie Monster metal territory of their early days ("Kill Caustic," "Affliction"), Decemberunderground is even more ambitious than its predecessor. First comes the backlash, then comes the platinum. --Aidin VaziriAlbum Description
"DECEMBERUNDERGROUND is a time and a place. It is where the cold can huddle together in darkness and isolation. It is a community of those detached and disillusioned who flee to love, like winter, in the recesses below the rest of the world."-Davey HavokDECEMBERUNDERGROUND is also the title of AFI's seventh album. And like much of the record's lyrical and visual imagery, it seems to stand in stark contrast to the name behind the band's world-renowned moniker: A Fire Inside. Then again, the brightest flames burn white-they just don't burn bright for long
"There's a lot more attention to detail on this record," Jade recalls. "We spent a long time writing it. We refused to rush ourselves. We took our time not just on every song but on each guitar part, each vocal, each bass line. We definitely didn't rush into the studio."
The fruit of this labor is a record that Davey Havok is confident "should break us out of any preconceived genres." And even on a cursory listen, the wealth and diversity of material backs him up from the first note: "Prelude 12/21" is a rhythm/vocal-oriented curveball that differs radically from the customary calls to arms that have opened all AFI albums since Black Sails. From there, DECEMBERUNDERGROUND veers from AFI's first straight-up vintage glam style shuffle on first single "Miss Murder" (complete with backing chants from The Despair Faction) to the stark and stunning soundscape of "Love Like Winter" and the epic suite "The Interview." The longtime AFI faithful need not worry, as DECEMBERUNDERGROUND features more than a fair share of familiar AFI hallmarks, from the slash and burn of "Kill Caustic" and "Affliction" to the balladic finale' "Endlessly, She Said."
Of AFI fans' reaction to the new record, Davey says, "Our fans always come with us every step of the way. I think they recognize honesty in our music, that this is the only way we can express ourselves, to make music that we love. Nothing else. That's what allowed us to make the jump way back when and what continues to keep us going now."
"Some artists fear change and their fans' reaction to it," Jade says. "A big part of our relationship with our fans is that we do change with every record. It's expected and embraced."

Listen to this all together.......2007-07-16
I bought this and Sing the Sorrow at the same time. I do have to say; I think Sing the Sorrow has more angst/ possibly emotion but this album has more of a cohesive story.
I think they are one of the best bands of the current music scene. There are alot of duds out there!

Something every AFI fan needs..........2007-05-13
Prelude is a great opener with a heart pounding drumbeat and amazing guitar. Davey's voice is commanding and soft at the same time, a real preview for what is to come for the rest of the album.
Kill Caustic is one of the two hardest songs and probably the one closets to resembling anything from Black Sails on backward.
Miss Murder was the single we waited for and it was amazing when it came out. Its the way the close their shows and it really is just a good fun song. Not that the lyrics arent deep, but the music will cause you to bop your head despite what the words are.
Summer Shudder should have been the third single but I think they have decided to go with The Missing Frame. Melodic with a little bit of violin. Great song.
The Interview was the first song on the cd to send chills down my spine. Davey's voice is amazing here and the lyrics are beautiful. Its the slower song on the cd and its one of my favorites. "Hold me you may drop me tomorrow' is an amazing line and the emotion you hear in Davey's voice makes it all the better.
Love Like Winter is catchy and its fun and just a good song that really shows where some of their influences come from.
Affliction is the second hard hitting song on the cd and its coupled with hard hitting music and melodic background vocals. Nice.
The Missing Frame was the song they chose as single number three and it definitely has the potential for airplay. Its one of the longest songs on the cd, but its not overdone.
Kiss and Control... God, its my favorite one. This was the one I wanted as a single because as an AFI fan, its the videos that make a lot of this so much fun and this would have made an amazing video. Its dark and rough and everything you'd want in a song. The guitar is amazing and the tiny speaking part towards the end is hard hitting and powerful.
Killing Lights is a fun little song, very bouncy.
37MM is amazing, very Depeche Mode. I loved it upon first listen and love it still.
Endlessly She Said was the only song on the Cd to make me cry. The raw emotion in Davey's voice, the music, all of it is so heartbreaking and at the same time very angry. An amazing song and a great way to end the cd.
Yet another step forward.......2007-05-09
Decemberunderground may be the bands finest example of this. I don't prefer it to any other AFI record, but it offers something the others don't, just as the others off something this doesn't. AFI truly get it by bringing new elements to keep things fresh but keeping the melodies, the mood, the songs, and the emotion and not settling for less than they've done before.
"Prelude 12/21" is the perfect opener. It's not as chant oriented as past openers, but is a definite sign of things to come with the record. The band brings several electronic elements into their songs, including the single "Love Like Winter" and "Summer Shudder". The band show new expirimentation in their songwriting on tracks like "37mm" (possibly my favorite song off the album) and "The Interview".
There's something here for the fan of AFI's older material, as well. "Affliction" and "Kill Caustic" remind one of their 1997 album, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes without sounding redundant, and "Endlessly, She Said" could fit nicely on any of their post-Shut Your Mouth... albums.
"Summer Shudder" and "37mm" are easily my favorites. Tons and tons of layers, very personal lyrics, all come together with the songs themselves to create something very special that you don't come across all too often. Although don't get me wrong, EVERY song on here is worth listening to, and not a weak moment that I can think of.
Decemberunderground is excellent in that you fall in love with it and are happy with it, but the bands constant reinvention with new sounds, elements, and concepts always makes you want more and keeps you guessing as to what they'll do next.
Ignore the "Emo" and "Scene" bull that seems to follow this band around. I've been a fan since 2000, AFI didn't go "scene", the scene caught onto them. Stop caring about the trends, stop caring about their "look", and just listen.

Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04
Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.
I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.

The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.
My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

The mysteriously monickered [title of show] turned into an unlikelybut well-deservedOff-Broadway hit in 2006. A large part of the show's appeal is that it's a true Broadway geekfest. It tracks the songwriting team of Jeff and Hunter as they attempt to come up with a musical very, very quickly if they're going to make a festival's deadline-kinda like the real authors of [title of show], Jeff Bowen (music and lyrics) and Hunter Bell (book), who also are part of the cast. We follow them as they race through various stock plots and characters, and then negotiate obstacle course such as finding backers, casting singers, and dealing with publicity. Bowen and Bell ingeniously integrate in-jokes about musical theater and its place in the culture at large ("Who wants to see Paris Hilton in The Apple Tree?") and set them to music so catchy it transcends the minimal arrangements (that'd be piano and...well, that's it). [title of show] shows what you can do with little money but lots of ideas and what seems like a bottomless reservoir of fun. Think of it as an update of the old MGM musicals in which Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney would put on a show in a barn. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description

This Musical is so [title of show].......2007-06-17
Jeff Bowen does an excellent job of portraying the difficulty of creating a new musical, putting the show they worked so hard on out there to be scrutinized and the ups and downs of the theatre world. He shows the difficulties of creating something truly new in a seemingly rather closed-minded theatre community. He shows the development of friendships and the realization of dreams from childhood. He shows the defeat of the dissenting thoughts and people that try and hold you back. And he does all this with a healthy helping of satire and sarcasm that keeps you laughing all the way through.
If you are looking for something new and different, this is the show for you. If you looking for a good laugh and maybe even a few tears here and there, this show is for you. If you are looking for a musical you won't be able to stop listening to, this is the show for you. Be prepared to be amazed!

"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
not funny.......2007-07-25
The funniest thing about the musical, I am now convinced, is the premise. Urinetown is a place where you have to pay to pee. A conglomerate has taken over all toilet facilities, and if you don't pay, you don't pee -- unless you go into the bushes, and risk getting arrested.
But it's just not funny. It's supposed to be a satire, but it just doesn't work. Why? I don't know. But I listened to many songs on the CD, and none of them had that true spark that makes you want to laugh. The opening number is "Too Much Exposition" making fun of musicals that open by explaining too much with words instead of action. And perhaps this song is in there to deflect criticism for the main reason this musical doesn't work -- it's too busy explaining, instead of getting on with the business of being funny.
My humor tastes: I watch the Daily Show, Colbert Report, South Park, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook (so-so), Frasier reruns. Never watched Friends, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or Family Guy, but did watch Seinfeld (although it's not funny to me anymore). The two most recent things I saw that made me laugh out loud were 1) Larry Wilmore doing his n*gg*r skit on Daily Show and 2)an early Chappelle episode where Sesame Street characters talk about drug use
An Amazing Find.......2007-04-03
With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")
I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)
The songs that I find myself listening to over and over are:
Too Much Exposition (not really a song, but still...)
Urinetown
It's A Privilage to Pee
Mr. Cladwell (a wonderfully sweet villain song)
Cop Song (a wonderfully fun villain song)
Follow Your Heart
Don't Be the Bunny
Act 1 Finale
What Is Urinetown?
Run, Freedome, Run!
Why Did I Listen to That Man?
We're Not Sorry (a great 20's sound, reminds me of 'Chicago')
I See A River (I really love this song... the feeling gotten across, before Lockstock comes out to comment, is 'Oh, everything is going to be okay', but Lockstock informs us that all is NOT well)
With a cry of "Hail Mathus!" the show ends. I just have to listen again, after making a trip to the bathroom.
Urinetown the Musical.......2007-03-10
Not for Everyone.......2006-12-28
"DON'T BE THE BUNNY!".......2006-12-04
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.

Guitarist John Williams (no, not John Williams the soundtrack composer) adds to his fine catalog of impeccable recordings with Classic Williams: Romance of the Guitar. But this isn't just a best-of collection (though some of his greatest work is included here) since the disc contains three new recordings. Among the new tracks, Fauré's Pavane is a real stunner, a short but gorgeous piece originally meant for orchestra and choir, where Williams's guitar sounds as though it always belonged there. We get Williams at his most interpretative--his arrangements of Satie's Gymnopedie No. 3 and Piazzolla tango Verano porteno--and his most serene (the "Cavatina" theme from the movie Deer Hunter). Let's face it, some fine classical guitarists can lull their listeners into near comatose states with their instrument; Williams, on the other hand, is just the opposite. His gorgeous tone, inventive arrangements, and interesting repertoire continue to make the classical guitar sound exciting. In short, a great introduction to Williams and a real gem for lovers of classical guitar. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

The Best One Disc Compilation of the Man That's Out There!.......2006-04-19
As a guitarist myself who has been struggling all these years with "Cavatina", it always amazes me how effortlessly John makes the tune sound so simple and as if two guitarists are playing, one for the accompanyment and one for the melody and yet it's all him! Not only are the tracks representative of John's great talent but they also represent some of the most famous and challenging pieces to play.
Another great example of this is "Asturias(Leyenda) by Albeniz, a hauntingly beautiful and deceptively simple-sounding piece. We also get pieces that span the centuries from J.S. Bach and Vivaldi to Stanley Myers and York ending with the brilliant second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez".
Although the sound quality isn't brilliant as some tracks sound better mastered than others, overall this is a great one disc introduction to John Williams' work and comes highly recommended.

Album Description
On Ghost Of A Rose, Blackmore and Candice Night present a fascinating combination of rock music, folk and melodies from the 16th century that is interesting in every note. Blackmore sees his songs as an homage to renaissance music, and his band transpose the multi-faceted music of the Middle Ages, which blends romanticism and mysticism, passion and enthusiasm, into their very own sound with acoustic and electric guitars, strings, renaissance instruments like hurdy-gurdy and bagpipe and Candice Night's beguiling voice. Features 16 tracks including a bonus video track of 'Way To Mandalay'. Minstrel Hall. 2003.Customer Reviews:

Ghost of a Rose.......2007-01-10
Most of the highlights from the Castles and Dreams DVD are here, Candace's vocals are strong and the guitar work is smooth. There is real feeling to many of the tracks.
The title track is a standout, and "All for One" makes a good sing along when caught in traffic. Go and buy it!
Chilling..........2006-09-14
Brilliant. This is Blackmore at his best. His most inspired work to date. "Cartouche", "Loreley" and "All for One" are among his classics. So are "Queen for a Day", "Dandelion Wine", "Way to Mandalay", "3 Black Crows" and the title track. Masterpieces all. One day, this CD (along with the DVD) will be looked back upon as the crowning achievement in the career of Blackmore's Night.
My only negative comment would be to leave off the cheap covers of Joan Baez and Jethro Tull. They pale in comparison to the originals. Particularly on "Rainbow Blues". On the original, Ian sings like his life depends on it. Here, the vocals fall somewhere under the rainbow.
