5 out of 5 stars Olivia Newton-John Have You Never Been Mellow.......2007-03-10

Ahhh, Olivia, what a sweet voice and what beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars time sometimes hurts.......2006-11-09

I love ONJ I still do always will. However being here in 2006 and listening to her 1970's recordings. Her youth and voice then just had this perfection amazing feeling. These recordings could not sound and be made today. It's a 70's organic cushion. It's so warm and so long ago that you sit and wonder about time travel. Everytime I see and hear anything from that time you just had to be there (especially as a child) Being a 70's child can hurt. The times are so differen't now and your headed toward 40 but your haunted by the era. I understand young people of today who were born in the 1980's and etc don't understand this. But I have talked to too many people in my age group and they understand what I'm talking about. A joyful simplistic time that's long gone. I keep looking for it. It can be very painful. It's only in our memories

3 out of 5 stars Just an OK album for me...but that VOICE!.......2006-05-27

Ok, die-hard fans, don't hate me, but this really is just an average album for me. Most of the songs, I can do without, especially that "Water Under The Bridge". I just think Olivia's voice is so much 'better' than that song. But, there are really nice, tender moments too. My absolute favourite would have to be "And In The Morning". This song just breaks your heart and Olivia is very good at that. She is the ultimate balladeer and she uses her instrument in such a way that you can get lost in that beautiful voice. At the end of this song, she gives a really heartfelt adlib and hits all those high notes so achingly beautiful, you don't know what hit you. Next, would be "The Air That I Breathe". It is better than the original. She puts a big, fat stamp on it and makes it all her own. Awesome. Besides these two biggies, I also like the title track "Have You Never Been Mellow". Boy, can John Farrar write! Although this song was such a big hit for Olivia and you know how big hits can go...you lose that freshness as the years go by...and you kinda don't want to listen to it because it's been "listened" to death already, but HYNBM is just one of those songs that you can never get fed up with no matter how many times you have listened to it. Sheer brilliance. And of course, there's "Please, Mister, Please. A pleasant enough melody to sing along to and I have heard Olivia sing this "Live" and I have to say that the "Live" version of this song is so much better than the recording.

A last word...if you don't like any of the songs in it, just buy the cd for the cover pic. Olivia is gorgeous. Look at those eyes...if I were a guy...oh, well...

5 out of 5 stars A shining example of Newton-John's 1970's output.......2003-04-01

'Have You Never Been Mellow', in my eyes, marks the beginning of Olivia's US music career. Her first four albums had been primarily British-based, with only one or two moderate American successes to her name. However by 1975 it seemed America couldn't resist the Newton-John charm and openly embraced both her and her music, giving Olivia two #1 hits in the form of the title track and this album itself.

A lot of the output from here on in up until Olivia's change of image in 1978 is a little patchy. Trying to bridge the gap between pop, Barbra-lite easy listening and country-folk, one gets the impression that she was almost trying too hard with a rate of two new studio albums a year. Luckily, 'Have You Never Been Mellow' manages to successfully merge the dreamy British feel of her first four records with the more commercial, FM-radio based feel of Olivia's American career.

The album is a joy from start to finish. It opens with 'Have You Never Been Mellow', still a pleasure all these years later and seemingly a favourite with Olivia too as she always seems to perform it live. Lovely lyrics and a gorgeous sentiment all wrapped up into a dreamy little package. 'Loving Arms', 'Lifestream' and 'I Never Did Sing You A Lovesong' are inoffensive radio fodder of the mid-seventies with Olivia's lamenting vocals and pleasant instrumentation. The record also includes two John Denver covers, an ingenious idea, combining Olivia's remarkable vocal strength with John's heartwrenching lyrics and melodies. 'Goodbye Again' and 'Follow Me' are definite highlights.

Olivia also tries her hand at a couple of uptempos, not uptempos by 'Physical' standards but certainly along the lines of the light and peppy pop tunes she was recording back in Britain. 'Water Under The Bridge' is 'Banks Of The Ohio' with less twang, faster pace, and better lyrics, and 'It's So Easy' is similarly pleasing. (I love the footage of Olivia singing this at a televised New Years' Eve party in 1975; she gets to the end of the song, walks up some stairs, trips, and squeals into the microphone. Ahhh, bless!)

A couple of songs of particular note include the beautiful 'Please Mr Please' which has become an Olivia standard, her breathtaking cover of the Everly Brothers' 'The Air That I Breathe' (I would go as far to say that this may be the quintessential recording of this tune) as well as a rather dark little song about one-night stands called 'And In The Morning'. Reminds me quite a bit of 'Amoureuse' from the 'Let Me Be There' (aka 'Music Makes My Day') record.

Add to that, of course, the 'Let Me Be There' copycat 'If You Love Me (Let Me Know)' which is infinitely better than its predecessor, and you have a very enjoyable summary of Olivia's early career. The album is cohesive, sharp, and lovingly warm. A definite must-have in any fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant album from 1975.......2003-03-26

This album contains three big American hits - the title track, Please Mr Please and If you love me let me know - but this album is of a high quality throughout. In style, it is very typical of Olivia's early music, with a nice mix of ballads and upbeat songs. The general mood of the album is upbeat.

There are covers of two John Denver songs (Follow me and Goodbye again), The air that I breathe (originally recorded by Phil Everly but made famous by the Hollies), Lifestream (Rick Nelson). Loving arms is a song that has been covered frequently, including by Elvis Presley and, more recently, the Dixie Chicks.

There are some great originals apart from the hits already mentioned. It's so easy sounds very upbeat, but the music belies the lyrics. Water under the bridge, And in the morning and I never did sing you a love song are all lovely ballads.

If you like pop-country music of the seventies, this is definitely worth listening to.

    5 out of 5 stars A Breathtaking Voice.......2002-09-24

This is clearly Olivia's best album, because my father bought it for me as a gift for my 11th birthday back in 1975. Her voice is so full of emotion and vulnerability especially on "The Air That I Breathe". She definitely knows how to interpret a song and make it her own. I would say every song on this album is quite beautiful and haunting. She has one of the best voices in the business ever! We have Britney Spears now? No comparison to Newton-John. This is her masterpiece and you have to listen to it to really appreciate her talent. Her earlier stuff is her best.

5 out of 5 stars "Kick Your Shoes Off...Close Your Eyes".......2000-10-24

This is the first album I stumbled upon just after seeing the worldwide cinematic smash "Grease." I was fascinated by just how beautiful the cover photo was and while I explored the musical content, I became content myself with how good her expression of these songs made me feel. Olivia's vocals have always held a very special place in my heart and she was always there for me to comfort me during times of adversity.

"Have You Never Been Mellow" came in a point in her career immediately after she captured the 1974 Grammy awards with her heart wrenching #1 "I Honestly Love You." And similar to this ballad, the title track contains ethereal, breathy vocals that proceeded to make the song her second US #1 in a row (This was also the second consecutive #1 album from the songtress as well.)

Olivia has some wonderful covers here with "Follow Me" and "Goodbye Again" penned by the great John Denver. She also covers Rick Nelson's "Lifestream" which ease and finesse. The cover of The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" shines with Olivia's saccharine signature vocals. Other ballads includes the consummate country/pop classic "Please Mr. Please," which went to #3 pop. "Loving Arms" and "And In The Morning" are also delivered with a sweet tenderness that onlyolivia can do. "It's So Easy" is a fun, bouncy pop song, while "I Never Did Sing You A Love Song" is another beautiful country tune. The only track I didn't seem to care for is "Water Under The Bridge," which is a bit more upbeat that doesn't seem to coincide with the "mellow" tone of the album.

This album is a bit of a challenge to find. I suggest checking ebay.com for starters. It was released with a special book about Olivia's life and career called "More Than Physical" that had a limited release several years ago, which even more difficult to find. This album is a worthwhile light FM 1970's classic that is worth seeking out. "Kick your shoes off, close your eyes," and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Contender as her best.......1999-12-15

If it's not her best then it's one of the top three - a smart and sharp album which opened her up to the world, the big US breakthrough, even if I Honestly Love You was from a year earlier. Borrowing from artists like John Denver (the version of Follow Me is awesome) this is one truly superb collection of songs.

    3 out of 5 stars Olivia's the BEST!!!.......1999-04-06

Even though Olivia's my favorite singer, I was disappointed with this one. All it contains is the "Have You Never Been Mellow" CD and a biography book. The book is great for those who love Olivia, but putting a previously released CD was a disappointment. "Have You Never Been Mellow" has it share of great songs like the title song. I was expecting something new or at least a CD of B-sides or remixes or even hard to get songs. Now that would've been a ultimate More Than Physical Box Set. I have almost everything she's released (whatever I can get my hands on, anyway). I'm a die hard fan and always will be and anything she releases I will buy in a flash. Her "Back with a Heart" album is terrific and so is "Gaia." Both albums are great. She even wrote all the songs on "Gaia" and the majority on "Back with a Heart." An artist who has come a long way in her career.
