In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars the elvis beat.......2007-06-15

I am very happy with this cd/it starts out early elvis and rocks all the way through as none other than Elvis could do...actually a good sound and certainly not a disappointment...I recommend this cd as a good purchase.

3 out of 5 stars elvis 30 #1 hits.......2007-06-12

I justdo not think that this cd was properly remastered. Unlike elvis 2nd to none, which sounded great, the sound quality is lacking on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2007-05-28

What an incredible collection of music. I may even be in the minority, but I thought many of the songs on the Second to None CD were just as good, and in some case better, than many of the offerings here. To put both together provides some of the greatest sounding songs ever released. Elvis was more than just a singer and performer. He is truly an American Icon. His voice and music are timeless and the grea thing about this CD, is that it opened the door for a lot of listeners who may not have been familiar with the great songs that are classics now and will remain so. I think it may be about time for "Third Times a Charm" for those other gems that fell a little short of the other classics.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best !!!.......2007-04-11

This collection of Elvis' work is one of the BEST purchase values as far as content and cost go. We are part of the generation that grew up listening to him and were extremely pleased with this large selection of his hits. If you want most of the songs you are familiar with and ones that were his biggest hits, this album is the best bet for your money !!!

5 out of 5 stars Golden treasures from 1956 to 1977.......2007-03-11

Unlike a lot of Elvis fans, this reviewer was but a child yet to enter school when the "King" passed away. Growing up, I had varying musical tastes and did enjoy some reruns on television of the films Elvis starred in. After a while I moved on to yet other interests in music, but eventually came back around to the one they call "The King" of Rock and Roll.

I'm not an Elvis Aficionado or expert, so if you want some fanatical Rain Man type repeater of his life or what was on his mind during the recording of a specific song, you will have to look elsewhere. What I will say is that what you see with this album is what you get. Every song is a #1 hit single, and there are 30 of them in all. Considering that you usually are lucky to get 20 songs for a maximum list on any CD, that in itself makes it something of value. 30 songs on a single CD that are also digitally remastered from their original recordings. That said, the remastering I feel is still great because although increasing and improving the sound, the album does not lose any of the raw, beautiful tones that make this music so timeless. The CD booklet has over 18 pages of photographs and commentary and features a nice timeline showing each song and when it was recorded. Some of the hits I'm enjoying right now at a glance are Heartbreak Hotel, All shook up, She's not you, and the pop sensation "Suspicious minds". If you are new to the music of Elvis Presley or someone who grew up with his music, I don't feel you can go wrong with purchasing "30" at all. It's a sunny day outside and hearing these songs gives me that feeling of enjoying the sounds, message and persona that is Elvis Presley.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-07-10

If you enjoy gospel music -- YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET! Elvis' incredible voice is perfect for the soulful lyrics. Plus he picks up the tempo on many of them making them sound more like rock. All of my favorites are on this 3CD set - so I'm very very happy that I bought it. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars This CD is great!.......2007-07-07

Elvis sings gospel songs like no other! Some of the songs are a litte rough but you have to realize some songs were recorded in his home or at the studio while he is just playing around. The first disc is more of the released songs while some of the songs on the other CD's are live versions or unreleased versions with him laughing and talking. I thoroughly love this set!

5 out of 5 stars Great gospel album!.......2007-07-05

I have always thought that Elvis' voice was never better than when he was singing gospel and this album proves it! Well done remastering, clear, very good sound. Absolutely a must for people who love gospel and Elvis!!

4 out of 5 stars A Casual Fan Semi-Review..........2007-05-29

Being a fan,but not a fanatic of Elvis,I came across this new collection of hits from him and thought it was a great time to buy. I had purchased an old hits of his from the 80's, on cassette.Of course,I know the standard hits.Alison,Pump It Up,Accident's Will Happen and my fave, What's So Funny...,among a couple of others. Noticed a whole bunch of songs I wasn't familiar with and look forward to hearing them, when I receive this new set.Of late,I am digging deeper into many classic artists I listen to.Elvis fits into that. For that reason,I am giving this collection,4 stars. For the songs I know. After listening to the others, perhaps I can raise it to 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars "The Only Elvis That Matters" Done Justice.......2007-05-20

In my opinion, this is the best single-disc Elvis Costello compilation anyone has ever released. In fact, it may even be the best introduction to E.C. out there (He's so stylistically diverse that no single album is an effective introduction, and both of the more extensive collections - "Girls Girls Girls" on Columbia and "The Very Best of Elvis Costello" on Rhino - would probably be overwhelming to someone unfamiliar with the majority of his work). Also, the collection "Rock and Roll Music," as is evident in the title, ignores his non-"Rock and Roll" songs.

But this disc finally gets it right. There was a "The Very Best of Elvis Costello & the Attractions" single-disc issued on Rykodisc in 1994 that came close, but as good as that disc was, this collection makes three substitutions that are actually improvements: "(The Angels Want to Wear My) Red Shoes," "New Lace Sleeves," and "Almost Blue" replace "Watch Your Step," "New Amsterdam," and "Love Field."

Not only are the substitutions slightly better songs in my opinion, they also paint a more complete picture of Elvis Costello as an artist and writer. Especially "Red Shoes" - if you'd only heard the ballad "Alison" and the reggae-influenced "Watching the Detectives" from his debut album, you'd have no idea what to expect from the rest of the CD, but "Red Shoes" really sets the tone for the rest of that disc (and it's just an amazing song). Some people complain that these songs have been repackaged too many times, but I have a hard time arguing with the final result.

The remastering of this collection sounds as good as the Rhino remasters (which managed to be a slight improvement over the already great-sounding Rykodisc versions), and I really don't understand why some people complain about the sound (but I never owned any of the vinyl records, so maybe I am missing something). Still, the sound is the best that I've heard on CD, and in terms of song selection, this is a near-perfect set. For some, this will be all the Elvis Costello they ever need. For others, it will be the beginning of a long journey into the career of one of the best, most insightful and most interesting singer-songwriters in popular music. Either way, it's hard to go wrong with this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Same Old Music in Yet Another New Sleeve.......2007-05-15

Now that thirty years has passed since his debut, it is apparent to me that Elvis Costello has a lot more in common with his namesake than a singing career. Case in point - Almost immediately upon his arrival at RCA, Elvis Presley's recordings were packaged with little regard to the consumer, and then re-packaged so relentlessly that nobody except the most dedicated, wealthy, and mentally unbalanced collector could possibly hope to amass all of Presley's catalog. With blithe regularity, RCA executives would abuse their position as the historic caretakers of a rock and roll legend by digging deeper and deeper into obscurities, then packaging them with recycled classic recordings. Very, very little was genuinely `new' except the package itself. These collections are innumerable, and I pity the poor soul who suffers the disease of being a completist collector, because it can cost you your bank account, your house, and maybe even your marriage, all in the pursuit of owning all that is Elvis.
It now appears as though the same type of abuse has befallen the recorded works of Elvis Costello. I should know. I was one of those `mentally unbalanced' individuals who felt the need to own every Elvis Costello item released on the marketplace. In the beginning, it was kind of fun. Costello had numerous singles with non-LP b-sides, and plenty of `alternate' versions to keep fans quite busy. I was a part of that vinyl junkie set, a cult of obsessed lunatics who lived to find the rarest single, or an alternate package. After three years and hundreds of dollars spent, I remember feeling betrayed when Columbia issued "Taking Liberties," a collection of Elvis' rare b-sides. In an instant, one five-dollar album made twenty rarities commonplace. Nevertheless, I soldiered on; buying 10" collector's singles, alternate mixes, and all sorts of oddities. Then, the CD era began, and it started to happen all over again. Elvis changed labels (from Columbia to Warner Brothers), and his catalog albums were subjected to not one, not two, but three separate repackagings, each of them containing unique `rarities' that could be obtained nowhere else. A dedicated collector would require four versions of each Elvis Costello album. At this point, I finally surrendered, but I already spent enough to finance a Hawaiian vacation for some record executive and his family of four. Nowadays I simply stand by, amazed as the repackaging craze continues unabated. By my count, the above named collections represent the 10th and 11th re-compilation of Elvis Costello's `hits'. I'm not saying they are bad collections. The booklets contain song lyrics, which is a nice touch, especially for the older material. Naturally, the songs are great and I should know, because I bought each of these tracks at least a half-dozen times already. If you still don't own them, then go ahead and buy them. You will enjoy them. I, however, will stare at my room full of Elvis-related plastic and acknowledge the reason that I never made that trip to Hawaii myself.

i swore i wouldnt buy the elvis cannon again=LPs,Singles,3 sets of CDs etc., unless it was on SACD,and i wont. But the 2 comps were worth a listen, rock and roll for the unreleased stuff{how is it possible?}and 10 years for the 4th remaster.Seeing Elvis's Lexus commercial with him enjoying surround sound just makes me sad for what could have been.Rock on,EC!

4 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- The best early Costello single CD yet.......2007-05-09

You can't hardly swing a dead cat without hitting Costello's early material in reissue form. With Ryko and Rhino both having taken ever-lengthening passes at his albums, Hip-O picks up the catalog years of 1977-1986 for another round. In addition to a new pair of compilations (this one and "Rock and Roll Music") that skim the initial decade's eleven albums, their May 1 release date also marks the re-re-re-reissue of the albums on CD and the catalog's digital download debut (initially from iTunes, later from addtiional services).

After so many Costello reissues and compilations, this collection is mostly a retail shelving refresher and a beacon for Hip-O's album reissue and digital programs; all 22 of these tracks have been available on CD before. And as with other single-disc Costello anthologies such as Sony's 1990 19-track "Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions" and Ryko's 1994 22-track "Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions," there's simply too much worthy material in Costello's initial eleven albums (not to mention assorted singles and B-sides) to fully essay in 80 minutes.

What you get here is a well drawn sketch that provides the neophyte a sense of Costello's incredible torrent of early creativity, the sustain of his first few years, a few missteps in the mid-80s, and a stronger-than-ever comeback with 1986's "King of America" and "Blood & Chocolate" LPs." Though fans of the albums will mentally flinch at the inter-album segues (and thus the missing classics), condensing Costello's career arc does demonstrate how his punk-era angst and blistering song-writing aged and then reasserted itself in a more mature, but no less powerful form a decade later. Reducing 10 years to a single CD also creates a bit of genre whiplash as Costello applied himself to rock, punk, pop, soul, R&B blues, and jazz.

As on Ryko's 1994 collection, Costello aided in the track selection. No surprise then that there are 19 tracks in common with Ryko's earlier release. The three substitutions add the essential "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes," "Almost Blue," and "New Lace Sleeves" in place of the expendable "Watch Your Step," "New Amsterdam," and "Love Field," making this the best single-disc Costello anthology on the market. Costello fans are better off making their own anthologies from the original albums, but those just coming to his work decades after the fact will find this an excellent primer. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. How do you put together a soundtrack for a comedy about witches--'90s style? Well, if she's young and her name is Sabrina, you compile an album of relentless teen pop and R&B hits. But if your witches are a little more mature (and, perhaps, suburban), as in Practical Magic, you use a different formula. And the brew found here is actually a good mix: Faith Hill gets as much play (one track) as Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell. Mitchell's "A Case of You" is simply great, and Bran Van 3000's "Everywhere" fits the folk-pop mold nicely, as does upstart Michelle Lewis's "Nowhere and Everywhere." The guys are the oddities here: Elvis Presley's "Always on My Mind" and Harry Nilsson's "Coconut" give this disc some fun quirks. --Jim Young

All the women in my family own and love this CD. The music fits the movie very well, and you can't help but enjoy the soundtrack. It is so special that my daughter is even using the instrumentals in her wedding!! I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Emotional.......2006-11-19

First of all I loved the movie and watch it all the time, I purchased the CD after the movie came because of the wonderful songs and music. I never tire of this CD, and agree with another woman's comment, that all women should own this CD... The music is soothing, relaxing and emotionally charged. I had this CD stolen out of my vehicle and can't live without it, so I am purchasing it again for the 4th time! That is how much I listen to it!

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Lives.......2007-06-10

I enjoy listening to Elvis. This CD has so many of my favorites. If you are an Elvis fan, this CD is a must for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars None Better.......2007-01-29

The Essentials series is to music what the Criterion Collection is to movies. They are quite simply the most comprehensive, highest quality collections available for the greatest music performers of all time. And The Essential Elvis Presley is no different. It is the best Elvis collection on the market.

Certainly there are other recent collections that are great in their own right but none delivers quite like this fantastic collection. 2nd To None, for example, omits "All Shook Up," "Jailhouse Rock," "Can't Help Falling In Love," and "Hound Dog," amongst others. Then there's 30 #1 Hits, which is missing "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Viva Las Vegas." But that is an inherent problem with any collection of number one hits; not all number ones hold up as well over time as other songs that never reached the top of the charts.

The Essential Elvis Presley, on the other hand, has no glaring omissions at all. The diehard Elvis fan will surely argue this claim, having found one or more underrated gems absent, but the casual fan would be hard-pressed to find fault with this collection.

Of course, you could always find two Elvis collections with all your favorites, and if you have other Elvis records already, you'll probably want to look elsewhere to complete your collection. But if you want a single collection of all your favorite Elvis songs, The Essential Elvis Presley is without a doubt the finest collection available.

4 out of 5 stars One glaring omission, one glaringly bad inclusion.......2007-01-17

What were they thinking when they put this collection together? Yes, it has almost - ALMOST - all of Elvis's greatest hits but where is "One Night"? And why, why, why would they dare to include Elvis's horrendous live version of "Polk Salad Annie" and omit a classic like "One Night"? It is for that glaring omission and that glaringly bad inclusion that I give this collection a rating of 4 rather than 5. Hey, I love Elvis Presley's music as much as anyone but he had no business recording "Polk Salad Annie." There's only one version of that song that should ever be heard and that's the original by the song's writer, Tony Joe White.

5 out of 5 stars Why??.......2007-01-10

I'll not spend time reviewing the songs we all know them well. I'm here to answer the question as to why another greatest hits collection??

1. This is the Elvis entry in Sony's fine "Essential" series. Certainly
Elvis merits representation.

2. Not everyone owns the other hits collections mentioned in other
reviews. New fans "discover" Elvis all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Birthday&Great collection.......2007-01-08

I've always Dug Elvis Presley. this is a Great Introduction collection a Double set that is on point. Suspicious Minds is My Favorite Presley song to this day. these Songs still hold up so well&Elvis's voice is the main reason. he left a distinctive impression with how he presented his take on songs. i already have Elvis collections, but this One is a very Good. a Must have.

Elvis Costello kicked off his debut album with a formal device that would also serve his next two long-players well: the first thing you hear is his voice. That opening phrase--"Now that your picture's in the paper..."--was more than sneakily, if not intentionally, appropriate, since Costello was quickly declared the second coming. It's become de rigueur to dis the pub-rock backing of U.S. band Clover, but their work here is satisfactorily edgy; guitarist John McFee makes some of the arrangements with his wailingly articulate fills. The remastered Rhino reissue includes a full second disc of demos and rarities. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Rock and roll blasphemy? .......2007-07-23

I admit I'm an anomaly...an EC fan who does not love My Aim Is True. I place it high in a second tier of Costello's standard recordings.

'No Dancing', 'Mystery Dance' and 'Angels' are in my Top 50 EC favorites as is 'Stranger in the House' from the Rykodisc/Rhino reissues. 'Welcome to the Working Week' is enjoyable. I also like 'Radio Sweetheart' and 'Cheap Reward' from the R/R extended discs.

I'm not going to bash the rest of 'Aim'. I simply don't find it as appealing as most of the reviewers here.

A final note...Live versions of 'Aim' songs can be found on some of the second discs of Rhino's reissues and the hard to find 'Costello and Nieve'. They are typically superior to the studio versions and are worth
seeking out.

5 out of 5 stars Plain and simple.......2007-04-10

One of the best debut albums--what they were called back before CDs--ever released. Though Elvis' infamous anger has tempered and he has ventured into an admirable array of musical genres, the depth and urgency of his songwriting skills are evident and prophetic here. Just try to grow weary of repeated plays of "Mystery Dance" and "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes." You will fail because they are endlessly listenable. This is a text book of rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Costello: The Real King.......2007-02-01

More Classic '1977' Gold. This contains some of Declans finest Moments and really none of his banter. Songs like "Blame It On Cain" and "Watching The Detectives" set to Prove that 1977 was the Peak year!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut.......2007-01-01

I'm not sure of the exact date, but it was the winter of 77/78, and my friends and I drove thru a blizzard to catch Elvis in a little lecture hall at C.W. Post College on Long Island, N.Y. Did it ever open our eyes, ears and minds. He played most of this album plus some of what was to be "This Years Model".I had purchased "My Aim Is True"after hearing, "Alison" on the radio but that song was only a hint at the rest of what was on the album. Songs like "Watching The Detectives", "Mystery Dance" and "Less Than Zero" are brillant and still stand up some 30 years later. This is one of the all time best debut albums and previewed an incredible output for the next 2 years. I wish that the Attractions had played on this but the playing on it is fine but not nearly as intense as it was live. It's albums and shows like this that remind me why I love rock 'n roll.

5 out of 5 stars the first and greatest elvis........2006-05-23

at the time that this album came out i had just lost my little boy, my husband had left me for a woman 24 years my junior, & i had a serious rash all up & down my left side. i was DEPRESSED. then i heard this music & suddenly i wanted to wear lipstick again. i wanted to wear lipstick & i wanted to dance. what a great album. and to this day in 2006 it still is! the best elvis costello album known to man (and that's saying something).

4 out of 5 stars The movie and soundtrack that sealed Elvis' 1960s fate.......2007-06-20

After coming off back-to-back strong acting (and very little singing) movies in "Flaming Star" and "Wild In The Country" (but very little money at the box office), Elvis starred in "Blue Hawaii" and his acting career and soundtracks would never be the same again. The soundtrack was hugely successful by being No. 1 for more than a year. But it also doomed Elvis to a decade of corny scripts and corny songs, but big bucks in B formula movies.

The songs are fairly strong with the title track "Blue Hawaii" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" (which I had sung at my wedding!). Also, "Rock-A-Hula-Baby" is a great semi-rocker, along with the great ballads of "No More" and "Hawaiian Wedding Song".

But then you throw in the corny tunes of "Beach Boy Blues", "Slicin' Sand" and "Ito Eats", and you know the rocker of the 1950s is dead and twitching in the grave.

The vocals are solid in all the songs -- even the goofy ones -- but the success of this movie and soundtrack basically signed Elvis' death warrant in Hollywood. No more good scripts would ever find their way to Elvis' manager again -- it was all B movies from here on out and we were never able to see Elvis as a true actor, which is what he yearned to be.

5 out of 5 stars takes me back.......2007-04-02

I enjoy this CD. Whenever I hear these tunes, I can see Elvis in all his Hawaiian beach boy glory. I like the extra songs at the end. You get just a snippet of Elvis being playful with the band and the producer. His voice still gives me chills.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2006-11-06

This album is great! From the excellent rock songs to the superb love songs. It's a definite must for any Elvis fan!

4 out of 5 stars Elvis' biggest hit album!.......2006-10-08

Blue Hawaii is certainly one of Elvis' best soundtrack albums from the 60's and was his biggest hit album. It stayed at number 1 on the US album charts for a then record 20 weeks! It contains one of his signature songs "Can't Help Falling In Love" and the modest hit "Rock-A-Hula Baby". This CD release is made even better than the original by the includsion of several bonus tracks including an alternate movie version of "Can't Help Falling In Love" that I really like. This was Elvis' commercial peak!

Unfortunately the success of this album and the previous soundtrack "GI Blues" convinced Elvis' management that the way to make the quick buck was to make lighthearted comedy movies and associated soundtrack albums. From here on out the movies and soundtracks would sink in quality and sales.

4 out of 5 stars I got carried away and forgot to look at the lyrics........2006-08-24

Blue Hawaii was Elvis Presley's biggest hit movie. And the Blue Hawaii soundtrack was his best selling album. Not his best album, but it is one of his better soundtracks. There are a fair amount of songs with silly lyrics like, "Ito eat like teeth are out of style" or "I'm a kissin' cousin to a ripe pineapple", but at least they have good melodies, and Elvis sings like he's having fun. And you can't go wrong with "Can't Help Falling in Love", one of the King's best ballads. The CD adds eight songs to the original album's 14, including "Steppin' Out of Line"(which is a song that was cut from the movie), and previously unreleased alternate versions of seven songs. Elvis fans should own this CD.

His smart and likable songs might be crammed with writerly details, but it's Elvis Perkins's voice that you notice and cling to, especially the way he pulls at the syllables. It's difficult not to term his music "dreamy" and this low-key, assured, and excellent debut recalls David Gray (if Gray were a lot less Hallmark-y). Perkins matches the crooning, knowing delivery and half-ironic lyrics of Rufus Wainwright with the visionary vocal gymnastics and love of obscure embellishments (circus/ marching band music plus singing saw, on the first song alone) of Jeff Mangum--the Neutral Milk Hotel singer who's been the influence du jour for a few years now. Perkins's worldview would seem to be revealed in the song title "It's a Sad World After All." But these aren't cry-baby numbers, and Perkins isn't going for the title of emo prince; he doesn't wear his eyeliner big and deep enough to be seen in the last row of the stadium. The songs are folky, pretty, and character-driven: like some wonderful, imagined collaboration between Donovan and Leonard Cohen. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars If you know what's good, you will love this album.......2007-05-13

Elvis Perkins is a agless poet in ugly times. The world needs more of him, but folks like him are few and far between. So get on the bus and give your soul a treat with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, touching, inspiring music.......2007-05-08

This is the most moving music I've heard in a very long time. Brilliant songwriting, heartfelt singing, interesting instrumentation. A feeling of wonder and even joy shines through these songs, despite the underlying sadness. This is an unbeatable combination that engages my deepest feelings. I can't wait for the next Elvis Perkins cd.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album!.......2007-04-12

A very impressive album - transcendent music and lyrics on most of the tracks, and the others are solid. My favorite tracks on the album are "While You Were Sleeping", "Moon Woman II", and "Ash Wednesday". It's the type of album that is enjoyable on the first listen, but that gets even better as you listen to it more. I would highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars sick live.......2007-04-11

These guys are great live and I would definitely recommend checking them out. My friends and I were struck at how he seemed to be some Dylan/Neil Young-esque contemporary folk singer. Everyone in the band is great too and and they are touring with a awesome band (Clay your hands say Yeah!)
BUY IT and listen

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Debut.......2007-04-07

It seems impossible for me to come up with one negative thing to say about this album. It is fantastic. I bought it basically on a whim, not knowing who he was aside from a brief interview I read, not hearing but a small clip of his music. I do this sort of thing all the time with varying degrees of success; but sometimes you just get lucky. For me, this isn't just a good cd that I will enjoy from time to time, but rather the kind I will be listening to non-stop for a good couple of months. The melodies are beautiful and the lyrics are intelligent. Though the themes are heavy at times, this is not a bleak album.

I hate to compare artists but the Donovan meets Cohen comparison is pretty spot-on with a little Rufus Wainwright and Nick Drake tossed in. But rather than comparing him to David Gray (as the Amazon review did), I would much sooner put him in the Badly Drawn Boy category. Above all though, he is a unique voice and has created a stunning debut album. I would recommend Ash Wednesday to anyone who seeks out great music.

Here's to hoping Elvis Perkins will be making great music for years to come.

It's a shame that only one side of Elvis' multi-faceted talent is remembered 25 years on from his death but there is so much more to the millennium's greatest performer than garish jump suits and shaky legs. The 50 Greatest Love Songs reminds us what a great singer Presley was; coming from the heart with more feeling and passion than most could ever imagine, all 50 of these songs are classics of the last four decades. The double disc set includes all the up-tempo standards like the incredible "Suspicious Minds", "I just can't help believin'" and "Always On My Mind" plus the Dusty Springfield signature tune "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". Also included are some of his older works from before and during the cinema years like "Good Luck Charm", "Love Me Tender" and "Old Shep". So no blue shoes, no sequinned jump suits, just the king singing about life, love and heartache. --Georgina Collins

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars First-rate live compilation of the 1970's.......2007-07-16

This is a first-rate 20-track compilation for anyone wanting to find out what Elvis Presley sounded like live in the last decade of his career. The selection is taken from various live albums and the songs are presented here as belonging to one single concert. The first half of the programme is covered by 1969-70 recordings with outstanding versions of "Johnny B. Goode", "Suspicious Minds" (the best-ever live cut from the 1969 "Elvis in Person" album), "Polk Salad Annie", "The Wonder of You", "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The second half features the hit single "Burning Love" taken from "Aloha" and the great 1974 live in Memphis rendition of "How Great Thou Art". The disc concludes with the unavoidable "Unchained Melody" from 1977, although they should have added "Can't Help Falling in Love", and why not the now classic 'Elvis has left the building' announcement.

The sound has been upgraded significantly (by Vic Anesini) and the remixed songs have real punch and power, also emphasizing the crack band that worked with Elvis. The general public at whom this CD is aimed won't be bothered by the misprint in the second half of the programme which claims that "You Gave Me A Mountain" and "An American Trilogy" are from 1972, while in fact they were taken from the "Aloha" album from a year later. The 1972 recordings might indeed have been a better choice, but let this not spoil your fun with this great disc, reminding us above all what a fantastic live performer Elvis was. At mid-price this is a real bargain.

3 out of 5 stars Ok Collection.......2007-06-12

Never was the biggest Elvis fan in the world but this is an ok collection of songs from Elvis's Vegas Shows and Aloha From Hawaii.Bought this as a gift and the person who recieved it likes it so I guess it wasn't a waste. It always did bug me that he abandoned his early stuff and just covered everyone else's.

4 out of 5 stars Well Pleased.......2007-05-12

Worth the money and 1 star missing simply because I was familiar with some of the content. It would be a higher rating for a newbie.
