The ideal place to start any Asia collection.......2005-08-08
INTRODUCTION:
Asia, in the early eighties, was an amazing band. The group took Steve Howe, the legendary Yes guitarist, and paired him up with the legendary rock drummer Carl Palmer. Only adding to this amazing band formation were the equally-notable Geoffrey Downes and John Wetton. The foursome released a number of excellent albums prior to the nineties, before the band's formation began to undergo heavy changes. Many Asia collections have been released over the years. How does the Anthologia collection measure up? Keep on reading to discover.
OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
The title of this set implies that it is a hits compilation, which isn't surprising, assuming just how many hits compilations Asia has. But, quite the opposite is true. This is a collection of ALBUMS! The set combines the band's first three albums, then-new tracks that were originally on an early hits compilation, and even assorted B-Sides and rarities from this era of the band. And it's all on two discs, which come extremely close to hitting the eighty-minute limit of content you can pack onto a single CD. Asia's sound was better on their earliest albums than any later ones, due in no small part to the members the band had in this phase, who were unrivaled in their music-making ability. When you have Steve Howe and Carl Palmer in the same band, you just know the results are going to be good. This collection features Asia in their prime, and it makes for the ideal place to start any Asia collection.
EDITION NOTES:
This compilation is a fairly recent release, and it is readily available in just about every major CD retailer in America. If you want this compilation, you're not going to have to search very hard for it. And that's about all I can say here.
OVERALL:
Asia was one hell of a band, but none of their compilations of material ever did them justice. Until now. Even though these albums have been rereleased countless times over they years, this is the ultimate repacking. Three whole albums and a ton of bonus stuff to go along with them. I can't really say anything else. If you're a fan of the band who has put off buying their stuff for whatever reason, now's the time to buy it - and this is where to start your collection!
Progessive Rock n' Pop At Its Finest.......2005-01-29
John Wetton and Carl Palmer are personal favorites...
Wetton has one of the best voices in rock EVER...
"Ride Easy" was a B-sider, but i think it was one of Asia's best...
"Anthologia" sounds better each day, with all the garbage spewin'
over the airwaves today...
A True Guilty Pleasure.......2004-12-23
