Midlake's standing on the shoulders of giants.......2007-05-17
I love this album. These guys take all of the elements of rock in the 70's that're timeless, and create a new piece. It's kinda like making an awesome collage out of all of those old National Geographic mags that they sell at the thrift store. The originals were good, but a masterpiece CAN be made with what has already been done.
A Really Outstanding Album.......2007-04-13
From the opening track Roscoe to the final track You Never Arrived The Trials of Van Occupanther is a really well constructed album. As you listen to each song you cant help but appreciate how the flute, guitar, piano, and electric guitar in the background complement the voice and lyrics of Tim Smith. This album blends together gracefully and powerfully and you really begin to appreciate what seem like alot of time and effort the group must have put into this album. Its been a long time since I have heard something this fresh. Give the album a try I am sure you will like and appreciate it. Stand out track: "Van Occupanther" this is a clever and beautiful song.
A one of a kind band..........2007-03-13
Out with the contemptible, self-obsessed, self-loathing lyrics of most modern bands; Midlake is folk like Woody Guthrie and brimming with good old-fashioned American idealism. Van Occupanther is thematically and musically transcendent, unlike many a contemporary act's cop-out post-modernism, in that it backs away from our history and gives generous place to who we are and where we're at in the grand scheme of things. How dare a band actually attempt to SAY something nowadays, right? But that's the case here, and it feels good. Emerson would be proud.
A Masterpiece.......2007-03-08
This is the first time I've taken the time to give my input on an album on Amazon. But I had to for this album. It is truely amazing. I bought it right before a trip to Denver and it became the soundtrack for a weekend in the mountains. They're style is truely unique. You definetly hear possible influences throughout. Some Radiohead, Pink Floyd, folk music of the 70's. This is an album for a wide range of music listeners.
Outstanding!.......2007-02-28
It's only their second project, but the Trials of Van Occupanther makes Midlake stand out of the crowd and takes them to the next level. At first, the tracks seem to run together and no single song stands out, but once you listen to the intricacies of each track the album reveals hit after hit. The first track 'Roscoe' was the reason I bought the album, but it has dropped to fourth place of my favorites on the album. Track three 'Head Home' takes the cake, track eight 'We Gathered in Spring' comes in second, track 5 'Young Bride' slides in at third. Be mindful not to over look 'Bandits' (track two) and the album's namesake track 'Van Occupanther', both catchy tunes. The harmonizing is incredible, and the array of instruments will put their contemporaries to shame. If you are curious whether they can pull off these delicate nuances live, the answer is an emphatic 'YES'! The live performance was captivating and they held their vocals and compliment of instrument sounds as tight as the studio recording, with some entertaining banter between songs. Go and get this album today! Vince Minneapolis, MN

Customer Reviews:
My favorite band.......2007-06-15
I recently discovered Dispatch while reading an article in Esquire. Music is a huge part of my life and when I got the, "Last Dispatch" cd/dvd set, I was BLOWN away by these guys and their talent. I proceeded to get everything they put out and each one was amazing. I wish I could see their benefit for Zimbabwe concert in Madison Square Garden in July of this year, but it is a long way to the Garden from here! I had the opportunity to see State Radio last week. It is a spinoff band with the front man being Chad Urmston from Dispatch. It was good, but Dispatch is/was, simply magic together. The voices and lyrics and instrumentation is superb on their cds. I have them all, and I listen to Dispatch 24/7 now and probably will for some time to come, as this sound never gets tiresome. So I must say this band is awesome and no matter which cds you get you won't be disappointed.
An Absolutely Amazing, Flawless Album.......2006-04-22
This album is most definently not given the admiration and respect it deserves. Its more electric then a lot of dispatch's other stuff, but it is definently still dispatch. This was actually the first dispatch album I got, after hearing bang bang, the general and open up, and it was for sure a great way to kick off my love for the music. This album covers a lot of musical genres- from the ska beats of bullet holes to the rocky/rappy sounds of root down. I can't name a song I don't like off this album, and I would highly, HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who enjoys funky/rocky/reggae-y music with great lyrics and an amazing sound, especially for a three piece band. Buy this Cd- I promise you will not regret it!
Most Underrated Dispatch Album.......2005-01-27
This album is often overlooked by Dispatch fans because it lacks the popular hits such "The General" and "Open Up" but even so, "Four Day Trials" rocks harder than any other Disptach album. The rhythm section here is so much tighter than on their previous album "Bang Bang," almost unrecognizable, due in large part to Pete Heimnbold's excellent bass playing. Although this album is a definite change in direction from their previous works, which feature lighter, more acoustic songs, the band never loses it's ability to write tunes that are catchy and likeable. Every track will make you want to sing along. As is the case with any Dispatch album, the coordination between the three vocalists is brilliant. Drummer Brad Corrigan is able to create incredible harmonies on every song, all while laying down a solid groove behind the kit.
"Four Day Trials" effectively balances agressive rock tunes such as "What do you wanna be" and "Here We Go" with the more emotional songs "Cover This" and "Headlights." This album is a unified work, never losing intensity and purpose, something that cannot be said about Disptach's inconsistant follow-up release "Who Are We Living For?"
Although two of the songs on this album "Here We Go" and "Mission" had already been released on "Bang Bang," the rerecorded versions that are on "Four Day Trials" benefit from greater energy and a more solid rhythm section, making them more fun to listen to.
Although "Four Day Trials" is not always a favorite among Dispatch fans, it is definitely worth the money. It has by far the most raw energy and intensity of all the Dispatch albums. My only complaint is that I wish it was a bit longer.

Fall -live at the witchtrials.......2005-09-30
I love this album. For years I had it on a tape together with Dragnet. Finally got it on CD. This album sounds stripped down, nothing fancy just great music and Mark E Smiths distinctive voice. The entire album was recorded in one day and mixed the following day. The Fall are an underrated band to come out of the punk / post-punk era of England. This album sounds just as good today as it did when I first heard it some 17 years ago. Although it is the Fall's first album it sounds remarkably mature and together. Highly recommended to those who have an open mind to music.
astounding.......2004-06-16
the fall do it all. If the glove don't fit brothers and sisters then you must definetly aquit
Kinetic Explosion, Wild Ride of Colors.......2004-05-20
The album is a magnificent creation. The music consists of disparate elements (awesome spikey guitar, busy drumming, simplistic keyboards, bass, and slurring barking voice), held together by passion and energy. This band posessed more ambition and ability than their peer group (Sex Pistols, Clash, Jam, PIL, Sioxsie & Banshees, Gang of 4, and other great bands). It's a mystery to me why they weren't more appreciated.
This edition puts the album forward in its best light, in nice fidelity, and collects practically all other available tracks from this band in this era. The last 12 tracks, from a Liverpool gig in 1978, have terrible fidelity but this is not important because the preceding collection of tracks, including 2 45's from the time and 2 tracks recorded for "Live at the Electric Circus" are frankly astonishing.

The Trials and Tribulations of Russell Jones, Ol' Dirty Bastard's third album, was largely recorded while he was evading the authorities and finished just before he was arrested in a McDonald's in Philadelphia. Suffice it to say, this is not his best work. Despite the title (Russell Jones is ODB's real name), this is not a confessional record in which the Wu-Tang Clan man returns to sanity. Insanity is, in fact, a key part of his act and personality; the man who raps about "stinking like doo-doo" has a song entitled "I Wanna F**k" and is now spending two to four years in a New York prison.
If ODB's excellent Nigga Please explored his party side, then Tribulations delves into his dark depths, confirming his position as the Screamin' Jay Hawkins of hip-hop. The record brightens occasionally on tracks like "Caught Up," which takes off from where ODB left Kelis on "Got Ya Money," but while ODB's creative mania remains intact, the album's production feels rushed, with many of the beats sounding cheap and flat. Clan members such as the Rza and Raekwon are noticeably absent, wisely deciding to skip this one until their Shaolin colleague is free again. You best do the same. --Jake Barnes
Album Description
Long hailed as the most unpredictable and eccentric member of the Wu Tang Clan ODB (Ol' Dirty Bastard) can also be called unstoppable. Incarcerated since July of this year, ODB has not ceased to continue his illustrious career. Shortly after his sentencing, he signed a record deal with the Los Angeles based independent label D3 Entertainment. The album THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF RUSSELL JONES will be released March 19th.
While ODB's antics offstage have, in recent times, drawn more publicity than his musical output, he has enjoyed astounding success with the Wu-Tang Clan as well as with his solo efforts. It was almost ten years ago that ODB, along with cousins RZA and the Genius, formed the Staten Island-based hip-hop supergroup Wu-Tang Clan. Along with several other core rappers, they hit the underground with their debut release, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) to critical acclaim and worldwide success. ODB's solo effort Return of the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version was released in 1995, and showcased his unique, maniacal, left of center style. N**** Please, was released in 1999 and achieved him legendary status.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly made remix album. 2 1/2 stars.......2005-01-24
I am a huge ODB fan that had to have all of his CDs, even this old thing. If you don't own this CD you're not missing much. For starters ODB and Wu-Tang had no input on this record. Dirty didn't even know it was being made. The whole album except for like three tracks are made from semi-rare B sides, MTV skits and awful unused studio cuts. Now, lets break the tracks down:
1. Intro -Funny as all hell
2. Caught Up -ODB only raps on this track for 20 seconds and it has one of the worse hooks in music history. **stars
3. Dirty & Stinkin' -Some O.K production, but what kills it is the guests Insane Clown Posse. Fourth remake of the song that I know of so far. **stars
4. Dogged Out -Sad remake of the song "Dog Shxt". The beat sounds Arabic and Too $hort sucks on his verse. **stars
5. Free With Money -Boring and thankfully short skit
6. Anybody -This is kinda good and C-Murder steals the show! *** stars
7. Waitress #13 - Skit, Dirty showing off his manners in a Diner.
8. Reunited -O.K remake of "Reunited" B side. *** stars
9. Here Comes the Judge -Wack as hell beat! Sounds like rejected carnival music! ODB goes crazy on this stinker. * 1/2 stars
10. Cute Devils -Skit, ODB showing love to some random fans.
11. I Wanna Fxck -Worse track yet! Who ever is singing that hook needs to stick to his day job. ODBs verse is recycled form "Don't You Know pt 2" and strange enough it seems censored. * star
12. Highjack -Sort of funny skit
13. Lintballs -Very good track even though Dirty has only one short verse. *** 1/2 stars
14. Zoo Two -Remake of "Brooklyn Zoo 2 (Tiger Crane)". Plain slow beats. ** 1/2 stars
15. Anybody (Remix) -Same lyrics crapier beat. ** 1/2 stars
16. Taking a Shxt -Very funny skit
17. C'mon -Remake of "Baby C'mon". Weak beats. ** stars
18. Dirty & Stinkin' (Remix) -Again, same lyrics crapier beat. Fifth remake of the song that I know of so far. * 1/2 stars
NOT THIS TIME.......2004-11-15
EVERYONE THINKING OF BUYING THIS, DONT! GET RETURN TO 36 CHAMBERS, ACTUALLY NO IF U AINT GOT THAT U AINT AN ODB OR WU FAN R.I.P OL DIRTY
THIS IS THE MOST WACKEST CD IVE EVER HEARD.......2004-01-28
FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES THIS CD THEY ARE NOT A TRUE WU FAN CAUSE THIS CD IS GARBAGE. MOST OF THE MUSIC IS TAKEN OUT OF THE RETURN TO THE 36 CHAMBERS AND PUT OVER NEW BEAT WACK BEATS AT THAT, WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING WHEN THEY PUT ICP,CMURDER,MACK10 ON THIS ALBUM. THIS IS JUST A WAY THE GREEDY INDUSTRY D3 RECORDZ WANTED TO MAKE MONEY OFF THIS MAN. WHEN THIS CD WAS COMING OUT ODB WAS IN JAIL AND HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT WAS COMING OUT. I GAVE THIS CD 1 STAR BECAUSE IT ONLY HAD ONE GOOD ORIGINAL SONG ON THERE AND THAT WAS LINTBALLZ WITH BROOKLYN ZOO AND SUNZ OF MAN,TO ANY TRUE WU FAN OUT THERE I ADVISE YOU TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS CD.
Review of ODB's third solo effort.......2003-07-22
I have always been a fan of Ol' Dirty Bastard. His first two albums were both highly enjoyable. His vocal talent, which is so awful that it's brilliant (i.e. Biz Markie) and his drugged-out flow are truly one of a kind. That being said, D3 has done his fans wrong.
Despite what any album summary might tell you, ODB did not record this album while on the run from the law. In fact, none of these songs were even recorded by him. Almost half of the tracks on the album are skits taken from MTV interviews. Of the remaining, more than half are old vocals over awful beats. They actually take a well-known track from his first solo album and put another beat behind it. Even the lead single featuring cult rap group, Insane Clown Posse has recycled ODB lyrics. There are only about three tracks that have unreleased vocals on them and none of them are worth it.
This album contains no production or guest appearances from any member of the Wu-Tang Clan and in fact would be better served to call itself a "remix" album than try to pawn itself off as a brand new ODB album, which it is not.
My first listen was my last..........2002-12-07
First song has the worst group ever, ICP, that automatically makes this CD horrible from the beginning. The majority of ODB's lyrics are just cut out of old Wu-Tang songs. The production is horrible. Stay away from this CD, I don't even consider it a Wu CD.

Very unique and emotional album.......2006-12-18
Following the success of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "E. 1999 Eternal," their friends and Mo Thug Family affiliates Poetic Hustla'z released their debut "Trials and Tribulations" in 1997. This is an album I really like and think is one of the greatest Bone related projects ever recorded. It's really a shame that it was promoted so poorly, because I think this is such a great record. The trio of Tony Tone, Mo!Hart and Boogy Nikke are three emotional, talented, and lyrical rappers from Cleveland. You can hear some hints of Bone influence in their flow, which sometimes borders on the sing-song delivery Bone is so famous for, but really Poetic Hustla'z are an original and creative act, and sometimes their style reminds me a little of early Outlawz music. The production is always excellent. Usually, there is a subdued feeling aided by piano and strings on most tracks, leading to a thoughtful, contemplative tone. They are very emotional MCs, pouring a lot of feeling into their lyrics on most of the tracks, and they often sound depressed, so it's very interesting to hear their philosophies. Some appearances come from Krayzie Bone and Flesh-N-Bone, as well as some female R&B singers for some hooks. It's fairly short at just under 50 minutes, but that may be why it's so consistent. I highly recommend "Trials and Tribulations," this is an embarrassingly slept-on and really great album.
The album begins with "Intro & Insanity," where Poetic Hustla'z collaborate with Flesh-N-Bone to speak of ghetto paranoia and life over a great beat. "Don't Trust a B...." speaks of women and troubles, it's probably the worst song on the album but is still actually pretty good. "Day & Night" speaks of the troubles of trying to make ends meet, the hook and beat are good. I really like "Parlay With a Hustla," the beat is funky and soulful and the MCs match it well with good verses. "Time Will Reveal" is an emotional and deeper song. "Cross Me and You Die" is a little angrier and threatening. "Weekend Buzz" is a classic, an absolutely gorgeous ode to smoking and relaxing. Bone Thugs themselves never made a weed song as good as this. The soaring saxophone is perfect on this song, making it sound soulful and happy, and the raps from Tony, Hart, Boogy, and Krayzie Bone are joyful just like the excellent beat. This is followed by the title track, a depressed yet optimistic look at life with excellent production and singing. I also really love "Smilin' in Your Face," a song about well-wishing haters that has maybe the best production, thick with upbeat synths and piano, and the chorus always makes me yell along. The album finishes with the conscious "Searchin' 4 Peace," followed by an instrumental of "Time Will Reveal."
"Trials and Tribulations" is a well-produced, emotional rap album that showcases the best of three talented MCs. It's sad that this album was so badly marketed and sold so poorly, because unfortunately they never made another album. This album is still in print as far as I know, so while it's available I suggest listeners purchase it while they can. Fans of Bone Thugs will certainly enjoy this, and I also suggest it to hip hop fans in general because this is a really enjoyable record.
The tightest Mo thug Members CD!!!.......2005-04-07
this CD is the bomb! my favorite member is Tony Tone, i think all the songs on here are all tight and well produced. Poetic hustla'z should come back with a new CD and it should feature Bone thugs n harmony. Well anywayz yall should get this CD and put in your Bone thugs and Mo thugs Collection.

Awesome.......2004-04-27
This CD has the best version of "Here We Go" on it. Every song is worth it. I suggest getting it ASAP because it is amazing as is everything they do. One Fell Swoop made an AMAZING come back as Dispatch.
4DT - Electric jam session.......2003-03-21
This live album from the musically talented triumvirate that is Dispatch displays their amazing ability to innovate onstage; you can almost feel the energy that comes offstage in this album. Nothing like "Silent steeples", their more acoustically centered album, Four day trials seems to focus on the more electric side of their music; Braddigan switches aptly between the drums and guitar, having really mastered the drums while remaining a fabulous solo guitarist (his tremolo solo's are mind boggling!), Chad remains the frontman with his hypnotizing folk voice and reggae guitar riffs (though without his dreads!) while Pete finally shows off how amazing of a guitarist he truly is.
The album opens with the chilled out"What do you wanna be?" that seems to sum up the album that was recorded in merely four days. Progressing into 'Bullet holes", Pete belts out his saga of lost love with his amazing voice, all the while jumping up and down the neck of his guitar without abandon. The guitar solo is amazing... Dispatch energize their "Bang bang" classic Here we go, progressing then into the musically fascinating Cover this which leads into Mission, a song normally led into with an Eye of the Tiger intro. Hubs and headlights are two fabulous, more reggae, songs... the Beastie Boys cover is awesome, it's good to hear them cover songs from the bands they are influenced by... ie Rage against the machine, Sublime, The Beatles... this is definitely a must buy for anyone who enjoys good music
great album.......2001-03-23
I have all of dispatch's albums, and although this is not the best one, in my view (silent steeples and bang bang, their first two, more accoustic albums were the best) it's still a great album. It was recorded live November 19-22 a few years ago in the studio, and has somre really fun songs. A great addition to your collection!
Dispatch - 4 day trial.......2000-10-17
This is a great cd. It contains great acoustic and electric jams, and is a mix funk-acoustic-jamming-reggae groove music. I recomend this album to any who likes to listen to skilled musicians and catchy harmonies. These band members play multiple instruments, and write their own songs and lyrics. If you like DMB, Phish, Guster, or Sublime you'll love this bands mix of styles and play this cd over and over.
One of the best.......2000-08-18
This album is one of the greatest displays of musical talent I have ever listened to. The band has a wide array of musical styles that they choose from, which helps to give the album a sound that differs from anything you've ever heard before. With live versions of "Here We Go", and "Mission", and even a cover of the Beastie Boys' "Root Down", this is one of those cds you can just leave playing, because each song is better than the one before it.

Trials and Tribulations of the Odd Numbers.......2001-08-01
This is an excellent, energetic CD by a power/pop trio who have a mod/punk influence. The drumming is technically amazing and the vocals and other instruments complement this with a clean, polished sound. I highly recommend the CD and am sure these boys will hit it big soon!

lovely.......2006-03-18
As a fan of Elliott Smith and of classical string instruments, this is truely the best of both worlds. I completely disagree that this is butchery of a talented man's music. And I doubt very much that he would object to this cd. It gives it a whole new feel and really brings it to a new level of beauty. In my opinion, lovely is the greatest compliment that I can give.
No Thanks.......2005-08-23
Horrors!.......2005-08-08
Once again the string quartet butchers a brilliant artist with it's simplified arrangements and awful musicianship. If you want to hear versions Elliott's works do him justice check out Brad mehldau (bottle up and explode), Bill frisell (satellite), ir chris O'reilly's soon to be released tribute album.
whatever.......2004-12-18
i just came across these string tributes and bought this one alonge with a david bowie and a radiohead one, and i think they're amazing. where the money goes to is completely irrelevant. kinda like saying spending money on anything that isnt elliott smith is selfish. the whole cd is great if your really into elliott smith. the way they put together waltz 2 sounds so great.
Shameless profiteering posturing as a "tribute".......2004-12-08
What a bunch of tasteless bottom feeders! What an injustice postured as a tribute to a truly talented artist no longer alive to defend himself! PLEASE do not give these people your Money!

You Got Still Somethin' To Say About It?.......2007-01-30
I was introduced to Songs: Ohio/Magnolia Electric Company through [...]. I kept hearing three different songs from this album, and many others from other albums. After hearing "Leave the City" for about the fourth time, I took the plunge and bought this album for $[...]. I have since bought three or four other full lengths and I really, really love this band.
Nothing can prepare you for this album. I cannot remember the last time I could visualize a live performance so clearly from a recording. I really love Mark Kozelek, but his recent live release, "Little Drummer Boy," simply does not compare. I am also a big My Morning Jacket fan, and I think this album beats the pants off the brilliant Okonokos. This album is a treasure. I must now make full use of its cost by spreading the Gospel of Molina.
no one beats jason molina.......2005-03-07
a meditative, bluesy live album. Both comforting and disturbing at the same time. I can't wait for the new studio release in April.
Fresh Toonage.......2005-02-14
Well, at age 48, I must say that I am not one who often finds new and fresh music that excites me. This CD by Magnolia Electric Co, does. I happened on these guys kind of by mistake---heard "Dark Don't Hide It" on the radio, and it blew me away, so I HAD to have the "Trails and Errors" release. Received it about a week ago, and it has never left the CD player. There will be inevitable comparisons to Neil Young, which i am sure the band would consider to be a compliment. I read a review that said "Trials and Errors" is actually an existential response to Young's "Tonight's The Night". When I read that, I thought the reviewer was nuts. So, I did what any good rocker would do---I pulled out my copy of "Tonight's The Night" and put it in the CD player, to be followed by "Trials and Errors". The musical experience was incredible. I would heartily recommend it to anyone.
I don't care if you're 25 or 55, this is one of the best musical experiences you will ever have. These guys are phenomenal.
Jason Groth really makes this group better.......2005-01-26
Jason's awesome guitar playing makes this cd a must have.
Drop the Oldham, Ring the Bell,.......2005-01-22
Cross the Road, Leave the City - - -
it's Magnolia Electric Co.'s (previously known as Songs: Ohia) latest live release. Gone are the days, it seems, where Jason Molina is a protoge of Will Oldham. After listening to Trials and Errors extensively, and seeing the band live in Philadelphia (supported by Br. Danielson, The Court and Spark, and Motorist), it is quite obvious that, at least for now, Jason Molina and the boys have shed more than just a name.
This album reflects both talented songwriting and skilled performances, including new utilizations of instruments, particularly apparent in Leave the City and The Last Three Human Words (this reviewer's favorite new Magnolia Electric Co. song). Trials and Errors includes a perfect mix of new and older material.
