Superb.......2007-07-13
This is a great cd, with nothing but the pure hip hop. They don't make so many of that kind nowdays so be sure to pick it up!
DJ Muggs and GZA "Grandmasters".......2007-05-23
I picked up this CD a little late(earlier this year) and I am somewhat angered that I didn't get it sooner. DJ Muggs(of Cypress Hill) and GZA/Genius(of Wu-Tang Clan) have terrific chemistry and collaberation on this album. I did not hear any of the earlier production from Cypress Hill and did not hear any of Muggs's style, so I was not sure what to expect beatwise on this CD. However, I am a big Wu-Tang fan and GZA is my secong fav in the group so I figured it would be worthwhile. The CD is packed with ill beats by Muggs and lyrical and thoughtful, yet iller rhymes by GZA. The two go great wioth each other on the CD and what I like most is that Muggs' production never stays in one spot. For example, on "Destruction Of A Guard" he provides a hyphy kinda voice-sampled beat, and then he flips the script on tracks like "Exploitation of Mistakes" and "Queens Gambit" he tunes it down a bit for clamness. GZA came through with the lyrics, as I expected, to keep you thinking and flowing. He flexes his storytelling skill on "Exploitation Of Mistakes" while, on the Masta Killa and Prodigal Sunn featured "Unstoppable Threats" he explains his place in Hip-hop a bit(Masta Killa verse sick, but not feeling Prodigal Sunn too much). As far as features go RZA and Raekwon the Chef show up on "Advance Pawns" both droppin ill verses. Actually on this song I think RZA outdid GZA just a little bit. Raekwon drops a ill hook on "Destruction of a Guard" which plays out the beat pretty well. Now, the filler on this album to me I think would have to be "Illuisory Protection" and to a lesser extent "General Principals". Not to sya that these songs are bad,its just that the other tracks on this LP out do them. That aside, this would be a excellent item on your collection list whether you're a fan of Wu-Tang or Cypress Hill or a fan of hip-hop in general.
My Top 5
1.Destruction Of A Guard(feat. Raekwon)
2.Advance Pawns(feat. Raekwon,RZA and Sen DoG)
3.Queen's Gambit
4.Exploitation Of Mistakes
5.Those That's Bout It or Smothered Mate
Peace hope they will return for another genuis callabo in 08 or something...
A stunning return to form! Liquid Swords fans rejoice!.......2007-03-02
Been listening to Wu since I first heard 36 Chambers back in '93. My favorite album of all time is Liquid Swords. This album is 100% off the hook. It's like a time machine back to when RZA was a genius, and it's not even him doing the work this time! GZA is strong as always, but as you know, it's the music that makes something memorable. Track 8 "All in Together Now" is an absolute stunner and will put a big dumb grin on your face. Run, don't talk, and get this one! Best Wu-anything since Supreme Clientèle, and it's a whole lot better than that. Run I said!
BEST HIP-HOP ALBUM UP TO DATE..........2007-02-24
Been years since I purchased a Hip-Hop album, with the recent purchases by far the best album to date, due to not only the solid by DJ Muggs, but with the rhymes by the GZA the Genius. The concept of the album is about chess in leaning towards life's lessons in my opinion. I can see more of collaborations of this caliber sometime in the future in more of The Wu-Tang's Reunion if possible, to even Raekwon's upcoming album, "Cuban Links 2"(imagine that).
I recommend this album for serious hip-hop purists in all formats of course, to whoever is looking for something "new" in order to get aways from the regular stuff in my opinion is the same old concepts that's supposedly ruining hip-hop.
A Dynamic Duo.......2006-11-17
I really don't have to say much on this one. I give it 4 1/2 stars because it's that close to classic. This is the type of album I rarely expect to hear from any other artist or collaboration. But since it's Gza and DJ Muggs I am not suprised. Gza is the most consistent hip-hop artist I've ever heard and Muggs is a tremendous talent behind the boards. This is what hip-hop is supposed to sound like.

The Assassination.......2005-08-14
Longtime D.J. and producer of Cypress Hill, Muggs stepped out for a solo project to work with various artists on a compilation entitled The Soul Assassins, Chapter I. This twelve track release was all produced by Muggs himself with an East Coast feel. Each track were tailored for each artist and not done sporadically. For the newcomers La The Darkman's "Devil In A Blue Dress" is simple enough to compliment the anti-thug lyrics. Opposite that, "Life Is Tragic" by Infamous Mobb over a violin loops for these Queens-bridge emcees / rapper for combat. Muggs funk loop with an almost muted drum track for Call O' Da Wild's "New York Undercover". Dr. Dre & B Real teamed up for the loud sample "Puppet Master" that was a good collaboration for the West Coast. Other artist on here has all original material that cannot be found on their albums. Fans of these artists and hip-hop / rap lovers will appreciate Muggs' effort.
very good.......2001-11-08
This album is just classic. It,s worth your monoy
underrated.......2001-01-08
dj muggs has been one of the most underrated producers in hip hop since cypress came out with their first disc. with this cd he showcases his ability to make his tracks fit the artist. with a slew of some of todays best mcs from the west, east and south, u cant go wrong. songs that stand out are goodie mobs decision, decisions which comes across with a positive message, especiall cee-lo's verse. the rza and gza spit hot lyrics over an amped up beat and wu-affiliate la the darkman comes with a bangin song of his own. mobb deep and infamous mobb deliver hot tracks as usual and call of da wild, though ive never heard of him before has a nice little song also. wyclef ends the album on a positive note with his song john 3:16. this album is not like your average cypress hill album, it is a nicely put together and talented hip hop collective that deserves some recognition

In the annals of pop reinvention, there can have been few sonic makeovers more complete and unexpected than the one executed here. With Dust, DJ Muggs, the beat-maker behind the crisp, dusty sound of Cypress Hill, proves that he's not limited to beats and rhymes. Dust is an atmospheric tour de force that doesn't just come from left field, it breaks through the outfield wall. "I Know" begins with wispy fuzztone guitar sprawling across playground sounds. The beat slouches like Yeats's beast making for Bethlehem, while the breathy female vocal is jarringly angular. "Rain" is countrified psych-rock, while "Faded" is airy. "Gone for Good," featuring Everlast, is the only thing on the album that fits Muggs's track record. Lawrence Muggerud's wandering ear and eccentric muse, as heard here, rivals those of the more lauded likes of Beck, Tricky, and Prince. --Angus Batey

'Cypress Hill' Only Hinted at His Potential............2004-01-20
Having already having been recognised as amongst the elite of Hip-Hop Producers/Dj's........as well as the Driving force behind "Cypress Hill". Dj Muggs takes time out from Cypress Hill to take another stab at the lucrative `Electronica' market. (After having co-produced on 1999's "Tricky's - Juxtapose" album. But although rather than merely retreading the Dark, menacing sound of their previous collaborative effort....Mugg's chooses to create an album that is equal parts "Portishead"/"Pink Floyd"/"Tricky" & "Dj Shadow" to jaw Dropping effect. Muggs never sticks to one style of music throughout the album, choosing instead to mix skilfully & seamlessly between all of the previously mentioned artists....yet always approaching from a fresh angle, as opposed to being an inferior imitation. By bringing in guest vocalist's ("Buckcherry's" - Josh Todd / the Afghan Whigs' - Greg Dulli & rapper "Everlast" plus several female vocalists), Muggs creates a woozy, nocturnal, seductive slow burner that has both its feet firmly entrenched in late-night consumption. Track two "Rain" shimmers & hypnotizes with it's bleak sonic soundscapes that are not too dissimilar to "Portishead", and track seven "Tears" is a brooding electronic highlight that pounds away with a eerie female vocal track combined to staggering effect. Muggs accomplishes a great deal with this album, and despite the fact that this album feels positively exclusive to late night listening, this is undoubtedly the best `Paranoia-inspired' Electronica album to be produced since "Tricky's" effort.
A Tricky Attack from hip hop pioneer.......2003-04-29
If you are expecting B-Real and his insane membrain to manifest on this record you are sadly and terribly mistaken - in other words - this is NOT a cypress hill album!!! It's not even a hip hop album. Rather it's a Massive attack meets Steve Roach meets Trikcy meets some country legend I still haven't heard of album, and that is also infact the problem "Dust" is suffering from. There is clearly "Mezzanine" and "Maxinquae" references present here, especially on the songs containing female vocals. Who can blame him though they were some of the most influetial and trendsetting albums of the nineties.
Nevertheless the entire album is so well produced and arranged that as a whole it survives with a band aid.......
Muggs is a shining example on how the hip hop and trip hop barriers slowly comes down. Unfortunatly he is one step behind Massive attack (for intance) and instead of trying to follow them he should have chosen a parallel route.
Ironically "Dust" contains plenty of nice tracks, but originallity went out the backdoor.
Some highlights include: "Tears", "Fat city" and "Believer"
Brilliant Album!.......2003-04-14
This CD is produced by cypress hill's legendary producer dj muggs, but it is not a hip-hop album. What muggs has created here is a down-tempo rock masterpiece. The vocals are mainly handled by amy trujillo and josh todd, but there are also apperances by greg dulli, who delivers the vocals on the excellant 'fat city' and muggs also collabs with his old pal everlast on the brilliant 'gone for good.' My other favourite track is 'rain.' But there are also many other great songs on the album. I seriously recommend this CD not only to cypress hill fans like myself, but to everyone who loves music, as this album has music from a variety of genres that will be enjoyed by everybody. Also, this CD shows that dj muggs is not only the best hip-hop producer around. But the best producer around. Period!
Great Album.......2003-04-08
Many people complain about the state of music being boring. Yet when good music comes out they tend to compare and complain about the sound and how different it is. This album is great and it lift the soul, which is what good music is supposed to do. Muggs has truly developed his skills beyond his usuall Cypress hill sound. Good Job

nice compliment to grandmasters.......2007-03-21
let me start by saying gza is still to this day the nicest to come outta the wu even with all the hype bein on ghost over the past year and a half. grandmasters was a hot album, i would say 4 or 4 1/2 mics, but i always felt like gza was too smooth at times for those muggs smack you in the face beats. this remix album is perfect at showcasing the amazing lyrics from the original album over beats with a little more subtlety, but all bangers nonetheless. so, if you ever felt muggs was just too overbearing at times, like you couldn't listen to the whole album all the time cause it was too enegrgetic; this album flows better and allows you to chill. like the previous reviewer though, if you love the original for that gutterness, you may not like this one as much.
One word, Genius........2007-03-20
Before i could even remember i have been a fan of Gza, the first grandmasters was a classic to put on the shelf. I am still listening to the cd at the moment, i am not to pleased with the beats they remixed onto this album. Album is still great but its nothing compared to the original. Gza, Muggs, keep doin ya thing (just dont remix it lol).

Rock still lives!! Riff raff, bluesy riffs the size of sledgehammers, whisky vocals and mixed like a pro! What's not to like? Whens the next album?!? Get these guys, Five Horse Johnson, Broken Teeth, Superheavygoatass and Wolfmother, and turn 'em up real loud so you can't hear the shoegazers and whine rock so many nimrods listen to these days.
Awesome rock from Detroit.......2006-06-20
This is some great stuff. Buy this album. My cousin Matt is the drummer. Hehehe....
YEAH, BABY!!!.......2006-03-28
a Sincere Poor mans Zeppelin. Not that that is a bad thing. Heavy old school rock riffs with guitar tone to the bone. I wish I was in the band. These guys sound raw, loud and proud. I would go see them in a heart beat. The kind of band you would walk into your local club, hear them, say WTF!?!? Grab a beer, walk right up to the stage, bang your head and put up the devil horns. Then maybe after get into a bar fight to top off the night...then maybe taco bell if they are still open.....then go home and make sweet love to your woman...then walk the dog...then accidentally lock yourself out of the house...then break a window because you're still drunk and forgot your keys were in your left pocket..then remember back 4 hours ago and say...damn that band was good..what was their name...the fugglies?...ahh...i peed my pants..dangit..
There is still real Rock and Roll!.......2006-03-14
This band, along with The Black Keys and The White Stripes, gives hope to an otherwise ill-fated rock scene. The album rocks in the true spirit of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Humble Pie, etc. In other words, The Muggs know how to play rock and roll. It is a great mix of fast, melodic boogies and rib cracking, driving jams. Detroit has it's first act to be proud of since Ted Nugent. I can't wait for the next one!
Sweet mother of Zod!.......2006-01-04
this is one of the best albums you will ever buy and a mandatory purchase for any person who says they love rock and roll.

Certified Bomb!.......2005-01-21
This is as hardcore as gangsta rap gets. Muggs' second instalment of the Soul Assassins' Chapters ranks as one of the better gangsta rap albums released in the millennium. The album borders between straight cadillac crusing-blunt smoking-down the hood and a touch of horrorcore. Muggs, as the genius behind Cypress Hill, sets out on his own to lay a solid foundation to his career as one of the most aspiring producers in the history of hip hop. His second attempt to establish the Soul Assassins is a more matured approach. The groundbreaking Soul Assassins Chapter 1 was only a taste of Muggs' talent, which evidently stretches out in Chapter 2. He takes a deeper step into his ocean, of eerie undertones and spooky piano riffs laced with deafening bass thumps - only this time, it sounds like a soundtrack to a psychotic murder motion picture. And of course, assisting him is a cleverly selected group of underrated and gifted emcees from both coasts. The microphone stranglers in this album have styles that coincide with Muggs' mental probing production with pin point accuracy, and this makes the results a marvel to listen to. Kool G. Rap never sounded so good with West Coast beats; Infamous Mobb's G.O.D. spits his best record ever; X'zibit rises to the peak of hardcoreness with King Tee; Ras Kass' guest appearance on a track with underground favourites Chace Infinite, Krondon and Phenam is a surprise - its good to know he's gone back to his old style; Kurupt makes two appearances - firstly to tease us with a head bopping interlude only to later cause massive wreckage with Roscoe - this is probably the tightest collaboration I've heard from the West Coast since the Dogg Pound. Even Everlast drops a short 2 verses across a nodding bassline and still manages to get the point across. The most astounding and inspiring track has to be Dilated Peoples' "Suckers Are Hiding" which is extremely addictive and you'll be rapping along with it in no less than 2 listens. There are also appearances from artists who made the first album: GZA, Goodie Mobb and Cypress Hill. Muggs produces all but 2 tracks which are contributed by his protégé The Alchemist, whose production is similar to that of Muggs (He would later be inducted in the Infamous Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill and Dilated Platoon families). DJ Muggs' creativity is exceptional and this album celebrates the brilliant calibre of his skills. Oh yeah, and make sure to check out the remixed GZA hidden track - it clearly shows how Muggs touches two ends of the world with his music (total seriousness toned to happy head bopping over the same lyrics).
Don't sleep on this classic........2004-08-15
This Cd is classic material. You need to keep this in your 60 disc changer forever. Muggs' Soul AssasinsI is nothing compared to the S.A.II. I recommend this if you like the collaborate style Cd's.I wish Cypress Hills could use the beats off this album to make them sound like they did when they just killed a man.Kool G Rap,Gza,Infamous Mobb,Dialated, with Goodied Mob, c'mon? This is a sleeper. I hope Muggs made some flow from this one, becuase he deserves it. Keep it up Muggs. Job well done. One love to all the hiphop heads that know what this sh@t should sound like. Lil who? Kanye wh@? We know you were listening to Muggs in the 90's. Much respect... Violen strings, fat beats, stares, Dj premier must give props to Muggs.Whens the third of the trio coming out???????? 8-14-04
An all-star underground CD.......2002-03-31
How this album cn be slated I do not know. Muggs has worked with high-profile artists in his time (Dr.Dre, Ice Cube, KRS-One to name a few), but on this installment of the Soul Assassins, he works with less well-known artists.
He wanted to surprise a few people because he could easily have an album filled with artists that are guaranteed to sell but Muggs prefers to keep things closer to the streets.
From Kool G Rap's tremendous opening, this album is brilliant. Admittadly, there are tracks that lack something but when you work with so many different artists, what do you expect?
This album is a marked improvement on the first album and I believe that the stand-out tracks that are Muggs-produced are from GZA, Everlast and Heart of the Assassin. The best track, I think, is the Alchemist produced Dilated Peoples track. The chimed beats are typical of him and the production wrk is phat. The beat for this track is remarkably similar to that of Royce Da 5"9's I'm the King, which of course was produced by Al.
Overall, if you wanna hear a sample of the underground plus a few well-known artists going back to the roots, then get this album...
" A must have for all Cypress hill fans and fans of hip hop".......2002-01-31
In this album Dj Muggs the brilliant Dj behind the beats of the west coast super group Cypress Hill, delivers a follow up to his
previously released compilation album Soul Assassins:Chapter 1. But Soul Assassins is a more gloomy type of album similar to the style Cypress Hill took in its "Temples of Boom" album. But this album is really underated, which is a shame because of the talent that is on this album and the one that came before it. Some of the artists that appear on this album include; GZA, Xzibit, Kurupt, Cypress Hill, Everlast, King T,Ras Kass,Goodie Mob, Kool G Rap, and Snoop Dogg ( who appears on the intro of Kurupts and Roscoes track but isnt listed. Pssst...Heres another reason to get this album at the end of the CD version theres a hidden track Done by the GZA which is slammin... so keep track 15 running if you have it. (5:16) Hint hint... There are really no disappionting tracks who ever said that is crazy. I'll be the first to admit that Skull and Bones was Muggs' weakest production to date but this album eclipses it,you can tell he spent time perfecting the beats on this album, and Everlast's and cypress' track are some of the albums strongest tracks. Believe me you won't be disappionted with this compilation album, like other compilation albums that have been put out by artist like Dr.Dre (that aftermath album) and p diddy..this one is really a tight compilation album get it!
3.5 mics.......2001-09-28
I feel that it is getting better track by track, from 6 or 7.

Juxtapose is a new Cream!.......2001-06-27
Juxtapose is a ground braking piece of work by Tricky that not only out does Angeles with dirty faces, but harkens back to the edginess of maxinquaye. The first track For Real is not only a critque of the plastic gangsters and players of rap but a knowing nudge to the public regarding the hype. Bom bom diggy and hot like a sauna shows transference of style rhythm with lyrics that rush you in the style of Miami base music. I like the girls is an eclectic mix with a little Bristol cream on the vocals for a truly fresh and furious sound. Call me, wash my soul and scrappy love will not disappoint fans of trip hop. This album is truly a masterpiece.
