In the midst of the late 1970s punk/new wave revolution, England's Supertramp tore a page from the Genesis playbook, suffusing their previously overwrought prog-rock influences and bittersweet hippie optimism gone sour with muscular pop hooks. They eventually became one of the world's foremost rock acts--and later a rich source for contemporary TV commercial music. But while Supertramp peaked quickly, they nonetheless spawned at least two bona fide classic albums--Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America--and a slate of FM radio staples, all of which are included on this near 80-minute anthology. Fully three-quarters of Crime is represented, and rightly so. That 1974 album both stripped down and reinvented the band's sound, centering it around the songs of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, pulsing electric piano chords, and distinctively reedy vocals on tense, spare songs like "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer." But by the time of the multiplatinum Breakfast, they had refined their edgy prog sensibility to virtual extinction with well-crafted pop hits like "The Logical Song" and "Take the Long Way Home." This well-chosen collection spans a decade, but focuses intently on the five great years that cemented Supertramp's reputation. --Jerry McCulley

This is a great "greatest hits" Cd by SUPERTRAMP. The recordings are so crisp & sharp! A fun Cd to listen to, ....anytime (especially if you like Supertramp, as I do!)

3 out of 5 stars Breakfast in America was the best!.......2007-05-26

I orderered the Very Best of Supertramp after debating between Breakfast in America (which I once owned on LP) and the former. I liked the cuts from Breakfast in America the best. I do love this group, though, they are eclectic and they have a very unique sound.

5 out of 5 stars Supertramp.......2007-05-13

After listening to this music 20 years ago and forgetting about it, the internet radio station played it a few tunes. I had forgotten just how good this music was. I only wish that they would put it out in 5.1 surround format. This is some of the best music from the 70's. A must have for any audio file.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Trampish Here.......2007-05-12

I bought this to restock the Cd's having owned the vinyl album for over 20 yrs. I was not dissapointed, all those early memories coming back when I first heard this again. Pure nostalgia and neither the music or the lyrics have dated over the years. A true super group. Go on give yourself a treat and buy this cd, you will not be dissapointed.

After a shaky start followed by several critically acclaimed releases, the English group Supertramp hit the commercial jackpot in 1979 with Breakfast in America. The album combined the band's FM radio, AOR-rock style with an almost carnival-like nature. Breakfast gave the band major hits with "The Logical Song," "Goodbye Stranger," and "Take the Long Way Home." The plinking piano and dramatic clarinet runs of "The Logical Song" imparted a comic, yet bittersweet tone to the release as a whole. In another example of the band's devotion to alternative ways to carry their melody lines, "Goodbye Stranger" rings with some of the purest whistling ever recorded. There's also a healthy dose of cynicism running through the 10 tracks with "Just Another Nervous Wreck." --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars Best since Abbey Road?.......2007-06-27

This album, back in 1978, seemed like it had fallen from heaven. The production values are gorgeous, resembling the WIlsons' studio work in finesse and brilliance. The songs themselves, from "Gone Hollywood" and "Goodbye Stranger" to "Take the Long Way home" could be baby-boomers-hipster's national anthems. Use of sounds like harmonica, whistling, clarinet and sax, and Hodgson's very searing guitar work, at select times (as in Goodbye Stranger) are reminiscent of the Beach Boys and Beatles as well. This is really glorious pop rock, informed by classical, jazz, and hard rock influences. The beats of the songs measure, very carefully, a kind of hammering, clattering dance beat--this is, as another said, very fun music. Biting social commentary, as well, on the star machine, and consumerist society. These guys had it all, and here they were meshed together tighter than a Toyota six-speed. Rev this thing up and let 'er fly.

4 out of 5 stars When I Was Young...............................................2007-05-05

This is not Supertramps best. Crime Of The Century is the best Supertramp album. But this is still unforgetable music. I do think Supertramp sold out alittle with this album. But at least there music still turned out great(unlike Guns 'n' Roses). The melodies are great, the lyrics are incredably addictive, and it's just really fun to listen to. The reason I only gave this album 4 stars is because of the slight sell-out factor and the fact that there are 2 very weak songs. I just never really liked Gone Hollywood and Oh Darling. They seem like boring, overly long fillers. Thats all the complaints I have. The rest of this album is 24 kt gold. The Logical Song is one of there most popular as it should be. I have never heard so many adjectives in one song. Goodbye Stranger is one of Supertramp's all-time best. So is Breakfest In America(the song). Both of those songs just make you feel all golly and happy. And then when their done, you feel like crap again. Take The Long Way Home is a absolute masterpiece. A very haunting and blue song. Just Another Nervous Wreck is one of the most underrated Supertramp songs ever. That song gets stuck in your head. This whole album gets stuck in your head. Even the songs I did not mention are really good. Overall, a truly enjoyable experience. So what if it's pop rock? WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

5 out of 5 stars And Now I Can't Afford The Pen To Sign Her Checks..........2007-04-11

You should know that it is nearly impossible for me to review this album. So great is my love for this classic that I can only find good things to say about it, and 'review' implies that one is at least partially impartial. How's that for a contradiction in terms? Well, let's get crackin', shall we?

This album has been a part of my life since the first time I switched on the radio in 1979 and heard 'Goodbye Stranger' pouring forth from the tinny speakers of my sisters' transistor. (If I ever started a band I believe I would call it Sisters' Transistor. 'S got a ring to it, don't you agree?) I have owned this in every format it was made available in, with the exception of 8 track, as I was too young to own an 8 track player before they were discredited and laughed off the face of the earth. These tunes have permeated my subconsciousness to such an extent that when I pop this disc in and hit Play I am instantly transported to the late 70s, just as if no time had passed at all. Just as if I could simply call up my buddies and we'd trudge down to Kovac's for a Marathon bar once again. This isn't so much music as it is nostalgia, but I confessed from the outset that I'm not an impartial judge of this recording!

'Gone Hollywood' makes it clear that Supertamp viewed American culture with wry and witty bemusement at best. The previously mentioned 'Goodbye Stranger' features the finest example of whistling to ever appear in pop music coupled with an unforgettable hook, and 'Just Another Nervous Wreck' should have served as an anthem for Underdogs everywhere. If only music this intelligent and durable were still in high demand now! 'Breakfast In America' stands as a snapshot of a vanished musical milieu, but like all genuine classics it transcends it's time and place in order to delight the ears of music lovers of all places and all centuries.

5 out of 5 stars A new direction with a new lineup.......2007-05-18

This isn't Supertramp's first album although it was the first that most people heard. What might surprise people was that Supertramp started off as a prog band. Their first album had four members and no horns. Their original guitar player Rick Palmer would quit over the band's musical direction and end up as King Crimson's lyricist from Larks Tongues thru Red. Their first album Supertramp wasn't even available in the US until 1976. This is their third album and finds the band headed in a different direction and doing quite well at it. This was a monster hit album and ended up making the band one of the most popular band's of the '70's. To try and pick out any song would be tough as the whole album recieved a lot of airplay back in 1974 and 1975 and 1976...well, you get the idea. I have to admit I don't listen to it that often but when I do, I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Crime of the Century.......2007-05-16

One of our favorite cd's.Some of the best music of the 70's or better yet "EVER!" Every song is classic and will never get old. Super Tramp lives on!

5 out of 5 stars Memories of City Hall Glasgow.......2007-05-13

Saw Supertramp perform this album in full at Glasgow City Hall, November 1974. They blew me away. The support act was a newcomer - Chris De Burgh. Every track is a gem. Typical of the best '70's progrock, this album is best listened in total and in begining to end sequence. That night I new I was at the begining of something special. The next few albums were all five star performances. Their live shows were note perfect and and enthraling. They can sound a little dated now. However the memories are magic. The line from Supertramp leads through current bands such as Coldplay and Snow Patrol.

5 out of 5 stars This Is One Underrated Piece Of Goodness.......2007-04-29

The first Supertramp song I heard was Take The Long Way Home(great song). After that, I brought Breakfest In America. I liked it alot. Then one day, I was searching around on ITunes and I found this album. I read the reviews and all of them said this album was Supertramp's best. So I decided to buy 3 songs: School, Bloody Well Right, and Dreamer. That was a mistake. I should have brought the whole album because when I listened to those, I quickly became addicted to Supertramp. After listening to those, I had to buy the whole thing. After listening to the whole album without interruption, I had to ask myself: Why haven't I ever heard of this album? This could be the most underrated album in rock history. It's that good. The only negative I have about this album is the songs don't really connect that smoothly(think Pink Floyd).
SONGS:
School: Sounds alot like Pink Floyd. At first, I didn't like it. Then after listening to it again, I loved it.
Bloody Well Right: A song so catchy, it should be illegal. Keyboard work is crazy good in this song.
Hide In Your Shell: Just listen to it. It will blow your mind.
Asylum: A song thats haunting yet comical at the same time.
Dreamer: Great pop song. Listen carefully to the words.
Rudy: A pretty sad song. Great sound effects. Takes alittle getting used to.
If Everyone Was Listening: Very odd song. Many hooks to be found in this gem.
Crime Of The Century: Fantastic song. Fits well in today's world.
OVERALL: I didn't love any of these songs the first time I listened to them. Now I do. Give it time. It will touch you(in the good way).

5 out of 5 stars Stranded on a island good!.......2007-03-07

Wow! This is Supertramp's 3rd album and how they have grown! The first two albums Supertramp and Indelibly Stamped were good and leaps and bounds ahead of what others were doing at that time. Something apperently clicked and a super band was born! Every song stands strong on its own merit here. If you are looking to start a Supertramp collection, buy this first. So if you end up stranded on an island and some genie grants you musical wishes, well now you know what to wish for.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the seventies!.......2007-06-14

This is one of the best of the super seventies albums and a little-recognized classic. Supertramp had a unique and instantly recognizable style that is very appealing if you like complex arrangements, solid but detailed melodies, all built around superb keyboard playing. If all you know are the hits from "Breakfast in America", you really don't know Supertramp and probably dismiss them as a trivial band known for simple pop songs. This CD will quickly dispell this notion and deserves repeated listening.

5 out of 5 stars good service.......2007-05-19

The CD promptly arrived in the mail. It was new and in the wrapper, as indicated in the product description. Very satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Congratulations! You just found something wonderful!.......2007-03-07

I'm sure you are familiar with Supertramp from Breakfast In America or possibly Crime Of The Century (both most have albums). Well, this CD is right up there as being one of the greatest Supertramp recordings. For my money, Supertramp was on fire during these years and was pumping out some seriously good music. Fool's Overture - turn it up, lay back and be amazed!

4 out of 5 stars 4.2 CLASSIC.......2007-03-03

This is a great CD. featuring 2 of the BEST songs ever written ('Give a Little Bit' and 'Even in the quietest..). Lyrically that song is gorgeous! Not to mention the 11 minute opus 'Fools Overture' (which i personally think sounds better on 'Paris')... This is a cd with songs that will never get old.. Too bad people forgot how to write good music anymore. Music with passion and feel.. Supertramp delivered always!! especially in the '70's!! Thanks for the great music Davies/Hodgson..

5 out of 5 stars Great Work.......2007-01-14

This is the other Supertamp cd (besides their ace Crime of the Century)that is a must for any classic rock collection. It is also worthy of five stars, but slightly below my ranking on the aforementioned Crime of the Century.

I loved every song on this cd. It made me remember why they became so popular, because the best of their collection, I feel, is on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Ecstatic to Rediscover This Gem!.......2007-03-18

Several other reviews go into great and insightful detail, so I won't be redundant. Suffice it to say that as a young man I wore out a cassette of this album with my Panasonic "portable" player and its single bud headphone! I knew nothing about music then, but was mesmerized by the cleverness and imagination in these songs. Now, as an older music junkie, I'd really forgotten about this until a chance hearing of "Poor Boy" in an old record store. What a joy to hear it all again in this re-mastering! Sure, the nostalgia was a big part of it, but now I can really see the genius in the composition, usually using just a couple of instruments (varied from song to song) to create the heart of the tune. Yes, use headphones (I recommend the TWO bud variety) to get the full richness and clever additions to each song. I like almost all of Supertramp's albums, but for me this is the one that moves more out of the pop/prog zone and into an area that's really unique. It's one of the few in my collection that I can't play too much.

4 out of 5 stars 4.4 essential Tramp.......2007-02-15

Even as a 20+ year metalhead, I love this cd. Many different sounds emerge. From the cool vibe of 'Aint Nobody but Me' to the heavier sounding 'Sister Moonshine' with everything in between., this album brings back the fun of the 70's that only Supertramp could provide. They definately were one of the best alt/rock bands out in that decade and are sorely missed. Just good pop that stands the test of time. Must Have.

3 out of 5 stars So so.......2007-01-14

This contains the great song Ain't Nobody But Me (the reason I gave it three stars was for this tune alone) and then it does nothing else for me. Crime of The Century and Even in the Quietest Moments for the best that Supertramp has to offer.

4 out of 5 stars The songs were out of order.......2006-06-01

When I first heard this album as a young man, it seemed to have a 50ish type of quality to it. It certainly was a positive album when compared to the preceding dark masterpiece entitled, "Crime of the Century." The integrity of the songs are certainly maintained as in the prior one, but I think more thought should have been put into the order that they were played. The bluesome style of Rick Daves always seemed to keep Roger Hodgeson's pop in balance. As a result, Roger seems to be represented too much in the album and it goes a bit over the top towards the end. By the way, I read that they cut a demo of this album in a single day, while sitting in the middle of the busy offices of the recording company. They really impressed the music executives, with their genius and musical capabilities.

The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall," "You Do," "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous (though they cut down the degrees of separation between them and Mann to an incredible one!). However, for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic songwriting, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor

"Magnolia" was a one of a kind film. Not only for it's amazing cast, unique story and great filming, but the soundtrack is one that will touch you to your very core. Aimee Mann's words and music are stirring, and tell a story of life that is so relateable, that P.T. Anderson wrote the screenplay based on her works, all the different character stories that converge stemming from the character of Claudia. Don't worry though, if you are fan of Mann, but have not seen this film, this is an album that stands on it's own. One that you will never seem to get enough of.

The CD has 13 tracks from the film, every one a winner. Most are written and performed(9 of the tracks) by Mann, and even the opening with "One" not written by Mann, she makes it her own with a fresh take and the mood is set. "Momentum", "Build That Wall" "Deathly", "Driving Sideways", and 'You Do" follow and the words and music have such feeling you cannot helped be touched by the story they tell. One of human emotions that you will either relate to or be touched by. "Nothing is Good Enough" is a fine instrumental, that needs no words. Mann's final two selections are 'Wise Up" and "Save Me". Supertramp adds their wonderful talents with "Goodbye Stranger", 'Logical Song" both excellent tunes that I find nice for drive time, as well as "Dreams" from Gabrielle" . The album closes with "Magnolia" from John Brion's superb score.

The CD sound is excellent. It comes with a booklet with some notes from P.T. Anderson, the songs and the words, and some film pix. Fans of the film can relive all the very human moments again and again, and if you weren't a fan of Aimee Mann before you will be now. Fans of Mann, will enjoy this album that is definitive of her muisc, her style and intuitiveness for saying what we may be feeling.

If you are looking for just the score(also marvelous on it's own), that is also available atMagnolia (Score to 1999 Film) (Score to 1999 Film). There are some excellent reviews there of the album. This soundtrack is also available here:Magnolia
so you can check both of these sites for best deals and availability.

I've written close to 1,000 reviews here and I don't think I've ever said this before..If I could go more then 5 stars I would, but it's true of this album.

I'll leave this with some words by Mann's "Save Me":

"You look like - A perfect fit -
For a girl in need - Of a tourniquet -
But can you save me -Come on and save me
if you could save me - from the ranks- Of the freaks
who suspect - they could never love anyone...."

Enjoy....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Magnolia Soundtrack.......2006-08-07

I love every song on this CD, Aimee Mann did a great job on the score. I would recomend this CD highly.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT.......2006-05-08

Aimmee Mann is an absolutely talented artist, and her contributions to Magnolia are of nothing less than what is to be expected of her. Each of her songs has its own taste, its own feel, and its own uniqueness to it. She definately doesn't try to overdo any of her songs on the popularity factor.
Don't get me wrong, the rest of the soundtrack is fantastic too. Hell, "Dreams" is now my top inspirational song of all time, yes, past the Rocky song "Eye of the Tiger."
If you're a fan of Aimee Mann, you have to have this album. If you liked the movie, you have to have this album. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the GREATEST soundtracks ever in history!!.......2006-03-07

"SAVE ME", was the oscar nominated song off this soundtrack.
it lost, unfortunately, to a forgettable cartoon monkey love song by phil collins from disney.
"Magnolia" told the story of 9 lives intertwined in one night.
very depressing, raw, and devistatingly real.
3 other songs you can find also from aimee mann's, "bachelor no.2" cd. an excellent piece of masterful writing as well as lyrical depth and sharpness. you won't find a better cd than this for a film. aimee tells it like it is.....and then some!

3 out of 5 stars no harrry.......2005-07-12

i dont like harry nilson because i dont like what he did with that badfinger tune either so i dont care about "one"

all the amiee songs though are pretty cool

3 out of 5 stars The Compilers Should Hide In Their Shells.......2007-06-28

Any retrospective or "best of" collection is automatically going to generate quibbles about songs which should have been included but weren't, and vice versa.

However, to point out the gaping omission of "Hide In Your Shell" from this two disc collection is NOT a quibble. "Hide In Your Shell" is not only one of the two or three best songs Supertramp ever recorded, it is one of the two or three best songs *anyone* has ever recorded in the genre of pop-rock music. In fact, after recording it, Supertramp producer Ken Scott had this to say: "It was a problem for me at the time, because I thought I'd achieved perfection. Nothing seemed to match up with that."

If you need further evidence of the importance of this song, it has been included on every previous "best of" Supertramp collection -- all single disc collections -- even though the song is nearly seven minutes long and was never even released as a single. If they made sure to fit it on all those collections, some of which had only 11 or 12 songs, why would they omit it from a double disk collection with 32 songs on it?

All I can say is this: if you're a casual fan of Supertramp and don't know "Hide In Your Shell", an amazing song which is a sublime blend of artistic boundary breaking, heartfelt and universal lyrics, innovative structure and the perfect melodic pop sensibilities you love Supertramp for, you're missing the very best of Supertramp. So do yourself a favor and go BUY "The Very Best Of Supertramp", and leave this misfire in the dust. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars More than I expected.......2007-06-02

There are songs on this anthology that I had never heard before. And, of course, all the ones I expected to hear are there, too. This is a great collection at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Supertramp - Retrospectacle:.......2007-03-12

How great to visit Supertramp again. I was a fan in the beginning, then somehow this great sound got pushed back, and now I am hearing it everywhere, including rap remakes and tv background. Like looking up an old friend, we have reunited and I am playing this ALL the time.

5 out of 5 stars First class Supertramp Anthology.......2007-01-23

All the hits are here, with a healthy dose of classic album tracks thrown in for good measure. Features mutliple tracks from their best-selling and best known albums such as "Breakfast in America" and "Crime of the Century" and is truly the first comprehensive Supertramp "best of." I was somewhat surprised at the strenght of their early material such as the "Crime of the Century" title track and also enjoy the later songs such as "Cannonball" and "Free as a Bird." And of course this collection has one of my all time favorite tracks, "Breakfast In America" - mind boggling that it wasn't a single. It's also nice that they included the one track from "Paris" (the double live ablum) that was new at the time: "You Started Laughing". My only criticism is that surely they could have inluded at least one picture of the band. In summary, although they throw a slightly differnt pop spin on "progressive rock", if you like Alan Parsons, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd, you'll like this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Remastered to Perfection.......2006-11-17

Others have already reviewed the track list. I agree that "Hide In Your Shell" should have been on here, but it's an otherwise excellent overview of Supertramp's career.

I want to emphasize the outstanding remastering that Universal has done once again with their Gold/Anthology series. I believe this is the second collection I have from the A&M roster (Styx Anthology being the other) and both sound awesome. You often hear the phrase, "I hear things that I didn't know were there before", and this time it's really true. The pluck of the bass and clarity of the percussion create an excellent soundstage for this music.

Considering that it contains roughly 70% of Crime Of The Century, Crisis, What Crisis?, Even In The Quietest Moments, and Breakfast In America, this collection is a steal. Buy it today!

4 out of 5 stars Shadow of Breakfast.......2006-08-09

"Breakfast In America" is without a doubt one of the all-time classic albums. Beyond that and "Crime Of The Century", it's easy to let the rest of Supertramp's work go unnoticed. That's what happened with me. I've been listening to Crime and Breakfast for years while neglecting the rest of their catalog. My bad! I've recently picked up several other Supertramp albums, including "Famous Last Words".

Clearly, Supertramp were trying to distinguish FLW as something other than simply a follow-up to the blockbuster Breakfast. Although the sound is unmistakably Supertramp, it's obvious there was an effort to strike out in different directions to accomplish something that could build upon their previous success.

Check out "Waiting So Long" for some foreshadowing of the following Supertramp album, "Brother Where You Bound" with it's rich orchestration and trademark build-ups and the '50s doo-wop influenced "My Kind of Lady" for an indication of these changes. Of course, there is still the classic Supertramp with songs like "It's Raining Again" and "Crazy" (which could easily have ended up on Breakfast In America based on its sound).

Despite hiding in the shadow of Breakfast In America, Famous Last Words is still a great album in the Supertramp tradition. Consider it essential for the Supertramp fan.

4 out of 5 stars The end of a era a great CD.......2006-06-14

They were at their peak as a band because everything in this disk is impeccable, you can find pop, ballads and those songs that made you hang on to Supertramp since there was something in there that just trancends...

5 out of 5 stars simply brilliant.......2006-04-21

I remember first playing ...Famous Last Words..., around the pool table one cold, dark night at boarding school as a teenager. I clearly recall my initial thoughts, that Put on your old brown shoes was the only Supertramp track that I didn't like, out of every track of every album to date. A good few listens later, it became one of my favourite tracks of one of my all time favourite albums. This album is simply brilliant, with the last two songs, Waiting so long, and the prophetic Don't leave me now finishing off a complete masterpiece with total awe. I literally come out in goose bumps as I turn up the volume to appreciate, particularly these last two tracks, it to their full glory.
If Roger Hodgson had to leave Supertramp, as he unfortunately did, he could not have left on a higher note.

4 out of 5 stars You Won't Regret Owning This, Supertramp's Last Classic . . .......2006-02-27

Even though "Famous Last Words" came out after Breakfast in America, with similarities in commercial pop songs like "It's Raining again", it features classics that no one should miss, such as "Know Who You Are, C'est Le Bon, Don't Leave Me Now". This is Supertramp's last album that belongs into the "Best" category, along with "Supertramp, Crime of the Century, Even in the Quietest Moments, Crisis What Crisis, and Breakfast in America".

4 out of 5 stars Supertramp is Melodious.......2006-02-23

Not too many bands come through with their originality and talent like Supertramp can. And I will always remember this band's unique flare for mellowing me whenever I need to rethink a hard day. Their music plays on even after the cd player is done and we are left with a profound - yet comfortable silence. I would love to see them in concert just once -- outside where the earth and sky surround Supertramp's fine musicians. I'm sure they have ties with nature and all it's surprises. Jennifer

5 out of 5 stars Ahh the memories..........2007-03-04

Supertramp. The very name still gives me goosebumps. My sister had this live performance on audio cassette. I practically wore it out when I was a kid. Everything about this performance is perfection. I can imagine being in the audience when I close my eyes while I listen to it. I actually prefer this live album to all of their studio sessions. I bought the double cd a couple years ago and began to breathe in the nostalgia. The only annoying thing about the cd is the duration of the concert was long enough to prevent it from being recorded to only one side of a cd just like the audio cassette. other than that there is nothing to say but, perfection.

5 out of 5 stars one of the finest.......2006-11-13

Paris is one of the finest live albums ever produced...right behind Procol Harum's Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition!!!

2 out of 5 stars Embarrassing..........2006-06-21

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge supertramp fan. Now that I have that out of the way, let me say that this album kind of sucks. I was very dissapointed after I listened to this embarrassing effort. Hopefully this isn't considered as a "good night," because in my opinion I think this live music just isn't nearly as good as their studio recordings. I will admit, even though I love supertramp, the band is a "polished prog-rock" band that just can't make good music live. At least this album says so, I haven't heard any other life supertramp stuff. I have had this album for about a year and I think I've listened to it all the way through about once... I usually get too disgusted with it before the end. Especially Rick Davies' parts. I don't mean to pick on anyone, and I love Rick's album ballads, but unfourtunately on this album Rick crashes and burns evey time he opens his mouth. Because I am such a big supertramp fan, I really am embarrassed when I hear this. Unfourtunately I have been spoiled by great live albums like "How The West Was Won", "Is There Anybody Out There?", and "Live At Leeds." Maybe that's just it, maybe you can't compare supertramp to stuff like that. What I noticed also was the weak music that seems to be dominating throughout this. When I listen to supertramp I am expecting some complex, full, and well thought out sounds, but when I hear this I hear simple, rushed, and very weak beats and tunes. Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty good live versions of songs here but that is about it. The rest is pretty weak. If you are planning to buy this I suggest saving it for completing your collection. I suggest their main four albums - "Breakfast In America", "Even In The Quietest Moments", "Crisis What Crisis?", and of course "Crime Of The Century" which is one of the best albums I have had the privelage to put to my ears. So I would get this only if you are completing your supertramp collection because other than that, it really isn't necceassary.

5 out of 5 stars The best Supertramp live album even 25 years later.......2005-11-29

Supertramp's seventh album entitled Paris was released in October of 1980.
The album was recorded in November of 1979 in Paris, France at the Pavillion on the final night of the band's Breakfast in America European tour. Paris is a wonderful live set, capturing the band at the peak of their popularity when co-leader/guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Roger Hodgson was still with the group. When you consider that the possibility of Hodgson returning to Supertramp these days very doubtful, Paris becomes a more important live document of the band, indeed.
Many great Supertramp classics are included in this live two disc set, such as most of 1974's grand breakthrough Crime of the Century(the spirited opener School, Bloody Well Right, Hide in Your Shell, Asylum, Dreamer, Rudy and the closing Crime of the Century which closes this live album), three songs from 1975's highly underrated followup Crisis? What Crisis? (Ain't Nobody But Me, A Soapbox Opera and Two of Us), two from 1977's Gold selling US breakthrough Even in the Quietest Moments(From Now On and Fool's Overture), and three from the #1 Multi-Platinum selling Breakfast in America(the monster hit The Logical Song, the title cut and the Top 20 smash Take The Long Way Home) plus one exclusive song called You Started Laughing which was not found anywhere else save the B-side to a song called Lady from Crisis? What Crisis?.
Hodgson and co-leader/keyboardist/vocalist Rick Davies sing their hearts out and play their respective keyboards with great passion, and Hodgson also serves up some incredible fretwork on the guitar. Co-horts John Helliwell on saxophones/clarinets/occasional keyboards, additional backing vocals and band MC(he does the stage bantering here, especially his humorous intro to Breakfast in America), drummer Bob C. Benberg and bass player Dougie Thomson have terrific interplay with Hodgson and Davies, helping to bring the band's great melodic music to life in tremendous fashion.
Just like on their studio albums, the band totally cook live in concert, too. The songs on here rival their studio counterparts, especially on Rudy which is played at a faster speed than the studio version on the Roger/Rick vocal duel section.
Paris did well peaking at #8 on the album charts(going Gold right away) and is one of my Top 10 favorite live rock albums ever, especially with the remastering on this album.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Reason Why.......2005-11-25

There's a reason why every review of this disc gives it 5 stars. Because it is truly an example of a classic live document from one of rock's more creative groups - Supertramp. The song selection as well as placement AND execution, makes this one a no-brainer. no. You know what makes this one a no-brainer? It is a great LIVE disc. So often I hear a live disc and i'm turned off because the 'magic' somehow eludes the live reproduction. This is definitely not the case with Paris. Top of the shelf walk down memory lane, when Roger Hodgson still graced the stage with supertramp.

5 out of 5 stars An long forgotten gem!.......2007-03-22

I first started to like Supertramp when i used to listen to my father's copy of their compilation "Classics Vol. 9", and started building my collection starting from "Crime of the Century". I discovered this album for the first time from a Supertramp website and bought an original British copy of the LP from ebay. I never even realized there were albums before "Crime", and that there were guys named Richard Palmer and Bob Millar!

The songs on the album have an overall sad feeling to them and I was also surprised to find all lead vocals by Roger Hodgson and none by Rick Davies. The songs I tended to enjoy the most were the two versions of "Surely", "It's a Long Road", "Aubade and I am Not Like Other Birds of Prey", Nothing to Show" and "Shadow Song" all stood out to me. I think this album shows a young band trying to find a good sound that would capture an audience.

However this would not be. Unfortunately, the album failed to impress the public when released, and resulted in the departure of Palmer and Millar.

If you're expecting to hear the classic, poppy "Breakfast in America", you're not gonna find it here! Its something dratically different.

Overall, I highly reccommend this album to all the Supertramp fans out there. Its too bad this album is overlooked so often, and really deserves positive recognition!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful surprise!.......2006-12-29

Having heard Supertramp saturate the airwaves in the early 1980's with songs like "Give a Little Bit", I was very uncertain as to whether I would actually like this album or not. To be perfectly honest, as a teenage prog fan in the early 1980's who was obsessed with bands like Yes, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd, I was a bit provincial in my listening habits. Fortunately, I have revisited several British Symphonic pop bands (apart from Supertramp) that I dismissed in my youth and found them to be generally quite good. Supertramp's debut album has three things going for it that made this purchase virtually frictionless: (1) it was released in 1970; (2) it reportedly sounded nothing like their later material; and (3) a lot of my fellow proggers have heaped praise upon it. After listening to the album several times I am happy to report that everything that has been said about the debut is true.

The musicians on this album include Richard Davies (Hammond organ, piano, electric piano, harmonica, and vocals); Roger Hodgson (bass guitar, flageolet, acoustic guitar, cello, and vocals); Richard Palmer (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, balalaika, and vocals); and Robert Millar (percussion, harmonica). Although all of the musicians are decent enough, Richard Palmer is excellent on the guitar and quotes from styles such as jazz and blues, while staying strictly in a rock context. I guess it is also worth noting that Richard went on to join the ranks of 1973-1975 phase King Crimson as a lyricist (at least I think so at any rate). The spacey Hammond organ work of Richard Davies is also superb, although I really wished that he had used the mellotron - there are some supremely melancholy passages on this album that would have been made more so by several orders of magnitude. Come to think of it, the use of the mellotron would most likely have made this album nearly as hallowed as the eponymous debut album by the English rock band Spring (1971).

This is a fantastic spin that is stylistically somewhat similar to other English rock bands lumped under the "progressive" umbrella in 1970 that were interested in pushing boundaries (including Spring). In short, very moody and haunting rock, with some attention paid to things like arrangement and dynamics. The tracks on the album range in length from 0'31 to 12'03" and blend together somewhat, imparting a song-cycle feel to the album. Although musically this album is still largely indebted to psychedelic and spacey blues-jam styles (you will not have your mind blown by intricate ensemble work), I did notice brief references to the emerging progressive rock scene as it developed in England. For example, there is an experimental passage on the lengthy piece Try Again that would not have been out of place on the track Moonchild from King Crimson's 1969 debut. Specifically, the section is structureless (no melody or meter) and consists of little "bleeps and blurbs" on the organ and guitar, with a little bit of percussion thrown in for good measure.

As far as the remastering of this CD goes, it is just so - so. While the sound quality is fine, the CD "booklet" is about as skimpy as they come (no lyrics or notes about the band). There are black and white photos of each band member however.

I was really impressed by this debut album by Supertramp and like it just as much as any of the other early experimental English bands like Spring, Gracious!, and Cressida. Although I have a tendency to give a lot of albums five star ratings (I really can't help myself), this album definitely deserves it. Recommended to fans of the bands previously mentioned along with (perhaps) 70-71 Pink Floyd.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing debut LP....from 1970 and not issued in the US until after Crime Of The Century.......2006-11-21

Long before "Crime Of The Century", I bought a promo copy of their 2nd LP ("Indelibly Stamped") and fell in love with the quirkiness of the music and Roger Hodgson's voice. I quickly discovered their first LP "Supertramp" and became a died-in-the-wool fan long before they got big.

This CD is an exact duplicate of the once-available US issue. Great sound and nice, crisp highs.

It's musically more melancholy than later albums, but anyone who loved Supertramp during their big-hit period will find this a welcome addition to their collection.

It's just a shame it's so expensive!

5 out of 5 stars Supertramp's debut album - underrated genius.......2006-02-10

In the seventies, many bands would rise to great fame by combining elements of progressive and art rock with the standard, commercially-appealing pop-rock formula. Amongst these bands, and certainly one of the most popular of the lot, was Supertramp. These British pop-rockers created one of the catchiest, most appealing musical sounds of the decade, and arguably of all time. But, like so many bands, they didn't gain immediate fame. It wasn't really until their third album that the band became known outside Great Britain (many American listeners don't even know that there were albums prior to Crime Of The Century!) Nonetheless, it was in 1970 Roger Hodgson and his bandmates released their self-titled debut, which sadly, did nothing on the musical charts and has long since been forgotten by listeners. Is it a bad album, or just one that people have been overlooking for too long? Read on to find out!

OVERVIEW:
Supertramp released their self-titled debut album on A And M Records in July of 1970. The band members themselves produced the album with assistance from engineer Robin Black. For the debut album, the band consisted of Roger Hodgson, Rick Davies, Bob Millar, and Richard Palmer. This was the only album to feature Palmer and Miller, whose voids would be filled with the presence of Frank Farrell, Kevin Currie, and Dave Winthrop for the next album. Tracklist for the band's debut album consists of Surely, It's A Long Road, Aubade And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey, Words Unspoken, Maybe I'm A Beggar, Home Again, Nothing To Show, Shadow Song, Try Again, and Surely (Reprise.)

REVIEW:
Supertramp's debut album sounds NOTHING like their later albums. If you're looking for the classic Breakfast In America formula that fused art rock and pop rock excellently and won fans over all around the world, that isn't what you're going to find on this album. On this album, the band's sound is nothing short of excellent, albeit in a radically different way. There's traces of psychedelia, art rock, progressive rock, and pretty much everything in between. In many ways, the band's sound resembles that of Yes, who at the time, was also still finding their sound. Even Roger Hodgson, the man who held this band together over the years and served as its leader in many ways, sings in a drastically different tone of voice. What it all comes down to is a simple point - this is an underrated masterpiece - definitely one of Supertramp's forgotten masterpieces. Read on for a track-by-track analysis!

-SIDE A-

-Surely: The open track is only thirty seconds long. Despite it's short length, the melodic piece serves as a brilliant introduction to the album. The melodies are excellent, and the vocals are stunning. Probably the best thirty-second song I've ever listened to.

-It's A Long Road: Here's a masterpiece of a song that should have been a much bigger hit. Why it didn't go down in the history books as a Supertramp classic is beyond me. With its semi-psychedelic rock sound and some damn fine vocals, this one had all the markings of a potential classic. This song keeps me coming back to this album more than any other. In short, it rules.

-Aubade And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey: For this one, the pace is slowed down, and the sound becomes melodic. The song is mostly acoustic, and once again, the vocals are one of the primary attractions present. From start to finish, the stylings of this song will keep you interested.

-Words Unspoken: Here we have another slow song, but once again, it's also an excellent one. The band uses a variety of instruments this time around, which help to keep your attention. The many shifts and changes of instrumentation are the prime attraction here - and they will keep you interested all the way through. Another damn good song.

-Maybe I'm A Beggar: Here's one of those songs that catches you off guard with a bridge sequence that differs radically from the intro and outro of the songs. The start and finish to the song are very slow-paced and melodic, and very "quiet" in comparison to much of the album. But, in the bridge, it all changes. The guitars enter the mix, and this definitely makes for an interesting shifting of sounds. One of many interesting pieces to be found here.

-Home Again: This is a short song, and all the way through, it's got that quiet sound to it. The tune does have some nice melodies, but it does seem a bit underdeveloped, and seems more like a "finisher" piece to the A-Side of the album than its own, well-developed song. I personally think this should have just been incorporated into the previous track.

-SIDE B-

-Nothing To Show: On this one the band shells out the organ - and does a damn good job using it. Combine this with some nice guitar riffs, vocals, and a borderline psychedelic sound, and the end results definitely speak for themselves. One of the album's finest pieces.

-Shadow Song: This song swaps out the organ for traditional-style piano playing. It's a melodic piece all the way through, using both piano and flute. As a result, the melodies displayed on this track are amongst the finest on the album. And I shouldn't have to tell you this, but once again, the vocals are awesome.

-Try Again: The lengthiest song on the album, this one clocks in a nearly twelve minutes! And in that long duration, the band takes all of the best elements of their sound from this era in their career, and fuses them together into one big excellent track. Whether it's the slow, melodic stuff you desire, or the fast-paced psychedelic rock, it's all here. Yet another solid compositon.

-Surely (Reprise): The album's final track is a reprise of that short composition that kicked off the album. This reprise version is lengthier and more well-developed than its starter counterpart. It is mostly instrumental in its execution. Ultimately, this stands as a great finisher to the album.

OVERALL:
In the end, despite sounding like a radically different band from the Supertramp we all know and love, this is an awesome album. Truly, this is one of the lost rock masterpieces of the early seventies. If you're already well on your way to becoming a tried and true fan of Supertramp, but you missed the pre-Crime Of The Century stuff, now's as good a time as any to go back and see what you missed! I strongly recommend this album, but do yourself a favor - get into the band's better-known material before you give this one a shot. It's a good album, but if you start here, you may get the wrong idea about the band. But, if you're a tried and true Supertramp fan already, this one is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

EDITION NOTES:
Pre-Crime Of The Century Supertramp is long forgotten by most, including the record companies. As such, this album is unavailable regularly in America. You're probably going to have to get an imported version, and of course, this means you'll either have to shop in a specialty store or order it online. It's worth getting though, so don't give up your search before even starting!

4 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic Supertramp album.......2006-01-31

This is a fantastic prog album. It has a very haunting atmosphere and many of the songs are plaintive, often about sad and foolish rich people, I suppose. It is probably influenced by King Crimson's first album. Highly recommended. They get quite a few instruments to experiment with, notably organ and even some flute. 'Try Again' has a dark aura but a catchy chorus. There is some fantastic instrumental work on it too, taking the song to about 12 minutes. There are many haunting semi-folk semi-prog ballads, and a few gritty blues numbers, though they have great instrumental work. Plus, the diction on this album is fairly good. 4.5/5.0
