In the midst of the late 1970s punk/new wave revolution, England's Supertramp tore a page from the Genesis playbook, suffusing their previously overwrought prog-rock influences and bittersweet hippie optimism gone sour with muscular pop hooks. They eventually became one of the world's foremost rock acts--and later a rich source for contemporary TV commercial music. But while Supertramp peaked quickly, they nonetheless spawned at least two bona fide classic albums--Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America--and a slate of FM radio staples, all of which are included on this near 80-minute anthology. Fully three-quarters of Crime is represented, and rightly so. That 1974 album both stripped down and reinvented the band's sound, centering it around the songs of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, pulsing electric piano chords, and distinctively reedy vocals on tense, spare songs like "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer." But by the time of the multiplatinum Breakfast, they had refined their edgy prog sensibility to virtual extinction with well-crafted pop hits like "The Logical Song" and "Take the Long Way Home." This well-chosen collection spans a decade, but focuses intently on the five great years that cemented Supertramp's reputation. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

After a shaky start followed by several critically acclaimed releases, the English group Supertramp hit the commercial jackpot in 1979 with Breakfast in America. The album combined the band's FM radio, AOR-rock style with an almost carnival-like nature. Breakfast gave the band major hits with "The Logical Song," "Goodbye Stranger," and "Take the Long Way Home." The plinking piano and dramatic clarinet runs of "The Logical Song" imparted a comic, yet bittersweet tone to the release as a whole. In another example of the band's devotion to alternative ways to carry their melody lines, "Goodbye Stranger" rings with some of the purest whistling ever recorded. There's also a healthy dose of cynicism running through the 10 tracks with "Just Another Nervous Wreck." --Steve GdulaAlbum Details

And Now I Can't Afford The Pen To Sign Her Checks..........2007-04-11
This album has been a part of my life since the first time I switched on the radio in 1979 and heard 'Goodbye Stranger' pouring forth from the tinny speakers of my sisters' transistor. (If I ever started a band I believe I would call it Sisters' Transistor. 'S got a ring to it, don't you agree?) I have owned this in every format it was made available in, with the exception of 8 track, as I was too young to own an 8 track player before they were discredited and laughed off the face of the earth. These tunes have permeated my subconsciousness to such an extent that when I pop this disc in and hit Play I am instantly transported to the late 70s, just as if no time had passed at all. Just as if I could simply call up my buddies and we'd trudge down to Kovac's for a Marathon bar once again. This isn't so much music as it is nostalgia, but I confessed from the outset that I'm not an impartial judge of this recording!
'Gone Hollywood' makes it clear that Supertamp viewed American culture with wry and witty bemusement at best. The previously mentioned 'Goodbye Stranger' features the finest example of whistling to ever appear in pop music coupled with an unforgettable hook, and 'Just Another Nervous Wreck' should have served as an anthem for Underdogs everywhere. If only music this intelligent and durable were still in high demand now! 'Breakfast In America' stands as a snapshot of a vanished musical milieu, but like all genuine classics it transcends it's time and place in order to delight the ears of music lovers of all places and all centuries.

The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall," "You Do," "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous (though they cut down the degrees of separation between them and Mann to an incredible one!). However, for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic songwriting, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:
Mann....Oh Mann..........2007-04-25
see below for link to the film score
"Magnolia" was a one of a kind film. Not only for it's amazing cast, unique story and great filming, but the soundtrack is one that will touch you to your very core. Aimee Mann's words and music are stirring, and tell a story of life that is so relateable, that P.T. Anderson wrote the screenplay based on her works, all the different character stories that converge stemming from the character of Claudia. Don't worry though, if you are fan of Mann, but have not seen this film, this is an album that stands on it's own. One that you will never seem to get enough of.
The CD has 13 tracks from the film, every one a winner. Most are written and performed(9 of the tracks) by Mann, and even the opening with "One" not written by Mann, she makes it her own with a fresh take and the mood is set. "Momentum", "Build That Wall" "Deathly", "Driving Sideways", and 'You Do" follow and the words and music have such feeling you cannot helped be touched by the story they tell. One of human emotions that you will either relate to or be touched by. "Nothing is Good Enough" is a fine instrumental, that needs no words. Mann's final two selections are 'Wise Up" and "Save Me". Supertramp adds their wonderful talents with "Goodbye Stranger", 'Logical Song" both excellent tunes that I find nice for drive time, as well as "Dreams" from Gabrielle" . The album closes with "Magnolia" from John Brion's superb score.
The CD sound is excellent. It comes with a booklet with some notes from P.T. Anderson, the songs and the words, and some film pix. Fans of the film can relive all the very human moments again and again, and if you weren't a fan of Aimee Mann before you will be now. Fans of Mann, will enjoy this album that is definitive of her muisc, her style and intuitiveness for saying what we may be feeling.
If you are looking for just the score(also marvelous on it's own), that is also available atMagnolia (Score to 1999 Film) (Score to 1999 Film). There are some excellent reviews there of the album. This soundtrack is also available here:Magnolia

I've written close to 1,000 reviews here and I don't think I've ever said this before..If I could go more then 5 stars I would, but it's true of this album.
I'll leave this with some words by Mann's "Save Me":
"You look like - A perfect fit -
For a girl in need - Of a tourniquet -
But can you save me -Come on and save me
if you could save me - from the ranks- Of the freaks
who suspect - they could never love anyone...."
Enjoy....Laurie

The Compilers Should Hide In Their Shells.......2007-06-28
However, to point out the gaping omission of "Hide In Your Shell" from this two disc collection is NOT a quibble. "Hide In Your Shell" is not only one of the two or three best songs Supertramp ever recorded, it is one of the two or three best songs *anyone* has ever recorded in the genre of pop-rock music. In fact, after recording it, Supertramp producer Ken Scott had this to say: "It was a problem for me at the time, because I thought I'd achieved perfection. Nothing seemed to match up with that."
If you need further evidence of the importance of this song, it has been included on every previous "best of" Supertramp collection -- all single disc collections -- even though the song is nearly seven minutes long and was never even released as a single. If they made sure to fit it on all those collections, some of which had only 11 or 12 songs, why would they omit it from a double disk collection with 32 songs on it?
All I can say is this: if you're a casual fan of Supertramp and don't know "Hide In Your Shell", an amazing song which is a sublime blend of artistic boundary breaking, heartfelt and universal lyrics, innovative structure and the perfect melodic pop sensibilities you love Supertramp for, you're missing the very best of Supertramp. So do yourself a favor and go BUY "The Very Best Of Supertramp", and leave this misfire in the dust. You won't be sorry.

I want to emphasize the outstanding remastering that Universal has done once again with their Gold/Anthology series. I believe this is the second collection I have from the A&M roster (Styx Anthology being the other) and both sound awesome. You often hear the phrase, "I hear things that I didn't know were there before", and this time it's really true. The pluck of the bass and clarity of the percussion create an excellent soundstage for this music.
Considering that it contains roughly 70% of Crime Of The Century, Crisis, What Crisis?, Even In The Quietest Moments, and Breakfast In America, this collection is a steal. Buy it today!

Shadow of Breakfast.......2006-08-09
Clearly, Supertramp were trying to distinguish FLW as something other than simply a follow-up to the blockbuster Breakfast. Although the sound is unmistakably Supertramp, it's obvious there was an effort to strike out in different directions to accomplish something that could build upon their previous success.
Check out "Waiting So Long" for some foreshadowing of the following Supertramp album, "Brother Where You Bound" with it's rich orchestration and trademark build-ups and the '50s doo-wop influenced "My Kind of Lady" for an indication of these changes. Of course, there is still the classic Supertramp with songs like "It's Raining Again" and "Crazy" (which could easily have ended up on Breakfast In America based on its sound).
Despite hiding in the shadow of Breakfast In America, Famous Last Words is still a great album in the Supertramp tradition. Consider it essential for the Supertramp fan.

The best Supertramp live album even 25 years later.......2005-11-29
The album was recorded in November of 1979 in Paris, France at the Pavillion on the final night of the band's Breakfast in America European tour. Paris is a wonderful live set, capturing the band at the peak of their popularity when co-leader/guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Roger Hodgson was still with the group. When you consider that the possibility of Hodgson returning to Supertramp these days very doubtful, Paris becomes a more important live document of the band, indeed.
Many great Supertramp classics are included in this live two disc set, such as most of 1974's grand breakthrough Crime of the Century(the spirited opener School, Bloody Well Right, Hide in Your Shell, Asylum, Dreamer, Rudy and the closing Crime of the Century which closes this live album), three songs from 1975's highly underrated followup Crisis? What Crisis? (Ain't Nobody But Me, A Soapbox Opera and Two of Us), two from 1977's Gold selling US breakthrough Even in the Quietest Moments(From Now On and Fool's Overture), and three from the #1 Multi-Platinum selling Breakfast in America(the monster hit The Logical Song, the title cut and the Top 20 smash Take The Long Way Home) plus one exclusive song called You Started Laughing which was not found anywhere else save the B-side to a song called Lady from Crisis? What Crisis?.
Hodgson and co-leader/keyboardist/vocalist Rick Davies sing their hearts out and play their respective keyboards with great passion, and Hodgson also serves up some incredible fretwork on the guitar. Co-horts John Helliwell on saxophones/clarinets/occasional keyboards, additional backing vocals and band MC(he does the stage bantering here, especially his humorous intro to Breakfast in America), drummer Bob C. Benberg and bass player Dougie Thomson have terrific interplay with Hodgson and Davies, helping to bring the band's great melodic music to life in tremendous fashion.
Just like on their studio albums, the band totally cook live in concert, too. The songs on here rival their studio counterparts, especially on Rudy which is played at a faster speed than the studio version on the Roger/Rick vocal duel section.
Paris did well peaking at #8 on the album charts(going Gold right away) and is one of my Top 10 favorite live rock albums ever, especially with the remastering on this album.
Highly recommended!

An long forgotten gem!.......2007-03-22
The songs on the album have an overall sad feeling to them and I was also surprised to find all lead vocals by Roger Hodgson and none by Rick Davies. The songs I tended to enjoy the most were the two versions of "Surely", "It's a Long Road", "Aubade and I am Not Like Other Birds of Prey", Nothing to Show" and "Shadow Song" all stood out to me. I think this album shows a young band trying to find a good sound that would capture an audience.
However this would not be. Unfortunately, the album failed to impress the public when released, and resulted in the departure of Palmer and Millar.
If you're expecting to hear the classic, poppy "Breakfast in America", you're not gonna find it here! Its something dratically different.
Overall, I highly reccommend this album to all the Supertramp fans out there. Its too bad this album is overlooked so often, and really deserves positive recognition!
A wonderful surprise!.......2006-12-29
The musicians on this album include Richard Davies (Hammond organ, piano, electric piano, harmonica, and vocals); Roger Hodgson (bass guitar, flageolet, acoustic guitar, cello, and vocals); Richard Palmer (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, balalaika, and vocals); and Robert Millar (percussion, harmonica). Although all of the musicians are decent enough, Richard Palmer is excellent on the guitar and quotes from styles such as jazz and blues, while staying strictly in a rock context. I guess it is also worth noting that Richard went on to join the ranks of 1973-1975 phase King Crimson as a lyricist (at least I think so at any rate). The spacey Hammond organ work of Richard Davies is also superb, although I really wished that he had used the mellotron - there are some supremely melancholy passages on this album that would have been made more so by several orders of magnitude. Come to think of it, the use of the mellotron would most likely have made this album nearly as hallowed as the eponymous debut album by the English rock band Spring (1971).
This is a fantastic spin that is stylistically somewhat similar to other English rock bands lumped under the "progressive" umbrella in 1970 that were interested in pushing boundaries (including Spring). In short, very moody and haunting rock, with some attention paid to things like arrangement and dynamics. The tracks on the album range in length from 0'31 to 12'03" and blend together somewhat, imparting a song-cycle feel to the album. Although musically this album is still largely indebted to psychedelic and spacey blues-jam styles (you will not have your mind blown by intricate ensemble work), I did notice brief references to the emerging progressive rock scene as it developed in England. For example, there is an experimental passage on the lengthy piece Try Again that would not have been out of place on the track Moonchild from King Crimson's 1969 debut. Specifically, the section is structureless (no melody or meter) and consists of little "bleeps and blurbs" on the organ and guitar, with a little bit of percussion thrown in for good measure.
As far as the remastering of this CD goes, it is just so - so. While the sound quality is fine, the CD "booklet" is about as skimpy as they come (no lyrics or notes about the band). There are black and white photos of each band member however.
I was really impressed by this debut album by Supertramp and like it just as much as any of the other early experimental English bands like Spring, Gracious!, and Cressida. Although I have a tendency to give a lot of albums five star ratings (I really can't help myself), this album definitely deserves it. Recommended to fans of the bands previously mentioned along with (perhaps) 70-71 Pink Floyd.
Amazing debut LP....from 1970 and not issued in the US until after Crime Of The Century.......2006-11-21
This CD is an exact duplicate of the once-available US issue. Great sound and nice, crisp highs.
It's musically more melancholy than later albums, but anyone who loved Supertramp during their big-hit period will find this a welcome addition to their collection.
It's just a shame it's so expensive!
Supertramp's debut album - underrated genius.......2006-02-10
INTRODUCTION:
In the seventies, many bands would rise to great fame by combining elements of progressive and art rock with the standard, commercially-appealing pop-rock formula. Amongst these bands, and certainly one of the most popular of the lot, was Supertramp. These British pop-rockers created one of the catchiest, most appealing musical sounds of the decade, and arguably of all time. But, like so many bands, they didn't gain immediate fame. It wasn't really until their third album that the band became known outside Great Britain (many American listeners don't even know that there were albums prior to Crime Of The Century!) Nonetheless, it was in 1970 Roger Hodgson and his bandmates released their self-titled debut, which sadly, did nothing on the musical charts and has long since been forgotten by listeners. Is it a bad album, or just one that people have been overlooking for too long? Read on to find out!
OVERVIEW:
Supertramp released their self-titled debut album on A And M Records in July of 1970. The band members themselves produced the album with assistance from engineer Robin Black. For the debut album, the band consisted of Roger Hodgson, Rick Davies, Bob Millar, and Richard Palmer. This was the only album to feature Palmer and Miller, whose voids would be filled with the presence of Frank Farrell, Kevin Currie, and Dave Winthrop for the next album. Tracklist for the band's debut album consists of Surely, It's A Long Road, Aubade And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey, Words Unspoken, Maybe I'm A Beggar, Home Again, Nothing To Show, Shadow Song, Try Again, and Surely (Reprise.)
REVIEW:
Supertramp's debut album sounds NOTHING like their later albums. If you're looking for the classic Breakfast In America formula that fused art rock and pop rock excellently and won fans over all around the world, that isn't what you're going to find on this album. On this album, the band's sound is nothing short of excellent, albeit in a radically different way. There's traces of psychedelia, art rock, progressive rock, and pretty much everything in between. In many ways, the band's sound resembles that of Yes, who at the time, was also still finding their sound. Even Roger Hodgson, the man who held this band together over the years and served as its leader in many ways, sings in a drastically different tone of voice. What it all comes down to is a simple point - this is an underrated masterpiece - definitely one of Supertramp's forgotten masterpieces. Read on for a track-by-track analysis!
-SIDE A-
-Surely: The open track is only thirty seconds long. Despite it's short length, the melodic piece serves as a brilliant introduction to the album. The melodies are excellent, and the vocals are stunning. Probably the best thirty-second song I've ever listened to.
-It's A Long Road: Here's a masterpiece of a song that should have been a much bigger hit. Why it didn't go down in the history books as a Supertramp classic is beyond me. With its semi-psychedelic rock sound and some damn fine vocals, this one had all the markings of a potential classic. This song keeps me coming back to this album more than any other. In short, it rules.
-Aubade And I Am Not Like Other Birds Of Prey: For this one, the pace is slowed down, and the sound becomes melodic. The song is mostly acoustic, and once again, the vocals are one of the primary attractions present. From start to finish, the stylings of this song will keep you interested.
-Words Unspoken: Here we have another slow song, but once again, it's also an excellent one. The band uses a variety of instruments this time around, which help to keep your attention. The many shifts and changes of instrumentation are the prime attraction here - and they will keep you interested all the way through. Another damn good song.
-Maybe I'm A Beggar: Here's one of those songs that catches you off guard with a bridge sequence that differs radically from the intro and outro of the songs. The start and finish to the song are very slow-paced and melodic, and very "quiet" in comparison to much of the album. But, in the bridge, it all changes. The guitars enter the mix, and this definitely makes for an interesting shifting of sounds. One of many interesting pieces to be found here.
-Home Again: This is a short song, and all the way through, it's got that quiet sound to it. The tune does have some nice melodies, but it does seem a bit underdeveloped, and seems more like a "finisher" piece to the A-Side of the album than its own, well-developed song. I personally think this should have just been incorporated into the previous track.
-SIDE B-
-Nothing To Show: On this one the band shells out the organ - and does a damn good job using it. Combine this with some nice guitar riffs, vocals, and a borderline psychedelic sound, and the end results definitely speak for themselves. One of the album's finest pieces.
-Shadow Song: This song swaps out the organ for traditional-style piano playing. It's a melodic piece all the way through, using both piano and flute. As a result, the melodies displayed on this track are amongst the finest on the album. And I shouldn't have to tell you this, but once again, the vocals are awesome.
-Try Again: The lengthiest song on the album, this one clocks in a nearly twelve minutes! And in that long duration, the band takes all of the best elements of their sound from this era in their career, and fuses them together into one big excellent track. Whether it's the slow, melodic stuff you desire, or the fast-paced psychedelic rock, it's all here. Yet another solid compositon.
-Surely (Reprise): The album's final track is a reprise of that short composition that kicked off the album. This reprise version is lengthier and more well-developed than its starter counterpart. It is mostly instrumental in its execution. Ultimately, this stands as a great finisher to the album.
OVERALL:
In the end, despite sounding like a radically different band from the Supertramp we all know and love, this is an awesome album. Truly, this is one of the lost rock masterpieces of the early seventies. If you're already well on your way to becoming a tried and true fan of Supertramp, but you missed the pre-Crime Of The Century stuff, now's as good a time as any to go back and see what you missed! I strongly recommend this album, but do yourself a favor - get into the band's better-known material before you give this one a shot. It's a good album, but if you start here, you may get the wrong idea about the band. But, if you're a tried and true Supertramp fan already, this one is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
EDITION NOTES:
Pre-Crime Of The Century Supertramp is long forgotten by most, including the record companies. As such, this album is unavailable regularly in America. You're probably going to have to get an imported version, and of course, this means you'll either have to shop in a specialty store or order it online. It's worth getting though, so don't give up your search before even starting!
This is a fantastic Supertramp album.......2006-01-31
