If you're tempted to smirk at Robbie Williams's hip-factor-free approach to music, you are too late; he's already beaten you to the punch. On Sing When You're Winning, the British megastar's self-parodying caricatures, filled with both bravado and deprecation, safely evade overearnestness in forms such as crickets chirping behind the love song "If It's Hurting You," and the unexpected orchestral string arrangement from Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" in "Supreme," a sermon for the aging broken-hearted. "Kids," his rousing bubblegum-funk duet with Kylie Minogue bursts into what can only be described as a full-out "musical number"; pop music hasn't seen such stare-down chemistry since Sandy and Danny declared "You're the One That I Want" back in 1978. From the "One Night in Bangkok" tributary disco track "Rock DJ" to the lighter-igniting anthem "Let Love Be Your Energy," this is unadulterated, epic pop music, and Williams' smart, irresistible wit permits the listener to indulge guiltlessly in all the album's bombastic fun. --Beth Massa

3 out of 5 stars A couple of good tunes, but that's about it.......2007-05-04

I was so excited when I first received this CD, but it got old really fast... Sounded like some old George Michael tunes from the '80s. Don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars It feels good!.......2007-02-21

First, let me say that i'm not a huge Robbie fan but i appreciate his songs and live performance. This is the second Robbie album i bought and i must say that this one is much more better than her 2005 dated album "Intensive Care". When I listen to this album for the first time, I felt that the signs of his following stuff are here included in this album. The hits "Rock DJ" and "Supreme" are two of Robbie's best songs. Kylie Minogue duet "Kids" and "Let Love Be Your Energy" are other two songs that i still like listening to.I've just discovered the beautiful "Love Calling Earth" and "Knutsford City Limits", and i feel like this album has much more than i've discovered yet.

5 out of 5 stars Pop Music for Grownups.......2006-01-25

I think I'm the only American Robbie Williams fans -- sadly most American's just don't understand him. Amazing that idiots like Ashley Simpson and the Backstreet Boys (who aren't even capable of writing their own music) sell millions, but Robbie doesn't catch. Sure he's a little vulgar, but it's entertaining. He's certainly no Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, or Led Zeppelin, but it's just FUN music (often with a mocking element). Americans, give him a chance ... I truly don't think you'll be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Pop Genius.......2005-11-13

Robbie Williams is a true rock star: sex appeal and personality to burn on top of clever, on-target lyrics, and a great voice that can be mean, kind, soft, and hard.

My favorite tracks: Kids -- a superb commmentary on the pop music industry. Pure genius to have Kylie Minogue (the opposite of clever) do the duet. Did she get the joke? Love calling earth -- heartbreaking. Just when you think RW is all snide remarks and sarcasm. Rock DJ is awesome for dancing -- and also for singing in the car!

It never ceases to amaze me that RW is not bigger in the US. Perhaps he's too clever?

5 out of 5 stars He's Winning All Right! .......2005-09-19

Robbie Williams has always been one to not follow the rest of the pop crowd with his individualistic music. Each of the 12 tracks he has written on this album are superb! This is pop at it's finest!

1. Let Love Be Your Energy - Great way to start off his album. It has a rock vibe to it that really kicks into gear in the chorus! A treat for the ears! (5/5)
2. Better Man - I think this is without a doubt one of his best ballads. The lyrics are so touching ("Rest assured my angels/ Will catch my tears/ Walk me out of here/ I'm in pain") you can't help but listening to this to relax. (6/5)
3. Rock DJ - An interesting song with an even more interesting video to boot. Again, has a rock vibe to it with some of the most infectious lyrics to make a killer track! His first tracks on this album are definately his strongest! (5/5)
4. Supreme - My 2nd favorite song on this album! Instead of following another rock song pattern, he turns to a more darker pop song. Sounds like it has a night time vibe to it. Great job, Robbie! (6/5)
5. Kids - MY FAVORITE SONG! It's so weird considering Kylie is known for her dance songs, but she does even better with Robbie on this rock type song! The chorus is definately the highlight of this song! Guitar driven beats and great vocals! (6/5)
6. If It's Hurting You - This is an ok song. His first five songs on the album are his best. It's a little too slow compared to his other songs. (3/5)
7. Singing For the Lonely - An uplifting song that starts off slow, but soon kicks into gear with some great guitars and drums. It sounds simplistic, but it works with this song and his great vocals. (5/5)
8. Love Calling Earth - Wow! This song is so soothing! It's a slower ballad but it is great nonetheless. Robbie really knows when to throw in all the music instruments or let his voice just do the work. Just plain awesome! (5/5)
9. Knutsford City Limits - Robbie kicks the album back into gear with another great rock tune. Has some great lyrics too! (When the meter ran out on life/ I used my tokens lady) Fantastic (4/5)
10. Forever Texas - When I saw the title of the song, I thought it was going to be some lame country song and boy was I wrong! This is another great rock song! (4/5)
11. By All Means Necessary - Another great slow song with some rather depressing lyrics. I am still dumbfounded by the lyrics, as I am guessing it has something to do with a girl just sleeping around with a lot of people based on what they have or something? LoL either way. Something to listen to. (5/5)
12. The Road to Mandalay - This song sounds a little weird at first, but takes a while to grow on you. Kinda sung in some storytelling fashion. Very interesting. (4/5)

As you can see by most of my reviews (Shawn Desman, A-Teens, etc.) The United States misses out on several opportunities to pass the pop torch to more deserving artists rather than simply giving it to mediocre performers. If you liked this, you should check out his even more emotional, Escapology!

4 out of 5 stars Top of the Brit Pops, with crooning.......2006-12-21

This is probably the only Robbie Williams album I will buy and I bought it because it was cheap and I knew some of the songs on it.

I'm giving the album four out of five because apart from the few hits on the album, there really isn't a bad song on the album. So, four stars for making a very listenable album which has a few terrific tracks on it.

Best songs on the album? Better Man and Kids. Rock DJ isn't a bad song, but, for whatever reason, I don't like it as much as the other two. These three songs constitute the hits on the album.

Better Man is a classic 'crooner' song-I'm sure Sinatra, Martin, Crosby and Cole would have killed to have recorded this song. Browsing through a record store today my opinion was confirmed by seeing a Williams' cd with nothing but songs made famous by crooners. ANYWAY, this song is really pretty-have some lovely musical and vocal melodies throughout.

Next terrific song-Kids. Features Australia's singing budgie, Kylie Minogue [as dubbed by ex-pat Clive James, I think]. A minor gripe in this song is, I think, Minogue's overly breathy intro to the song. Very minor gripe. This song has a funky introduction, good bass lick and Minogue's and William's voices gel terrifically in the standout, singalong chorus. Features Williams semi-rapping in the outro [I think in other songs his rapping is very 'white'-a bit embarrassing to listen to].

If you're new to Williams, I should warn you that for a pop idol, his lyrics are very much on the fringe. E.g. I LOVE the lyric in Kids' outro for its understated humour: "The press be asking 'do I care for sodomy'. I don't know...yeah...probably". The uncertainty of his delivery makes this line most amusing.

The third hit from this album is Rock DJ. Maybe for some fans this is the standout track of the album. The intro reminds me of the song "One night in Bangkok" by an ABBA member and theatre legend Tim Rice [I think], for the musical "Chess". That song also features the rapping style favoured by Williams but not mastered by him, yet, I don't think. Still, Williams' song is high energy and entertaining in a poppy way.

As for the rest of the album, I think the best of the rest is probably "If it's hurting you". This is another song in the crooner style which has a better melody than most crooner songs I've heard [I'm too young to have had much exposure to crooning]. Has nice vocal melodies and note holding, without the vomit inducing excesses of that style exemplified by Whitney Houston, who I nominate as the most annoying artist of the last thousand years.

To the other songs-I can't say I remember any of them after listening to this album only once a few days ago. I.e. the songs aren't memorable, but you won't find yourself throwing a shoe at the cd player to skip a track. Many of the songs are mellow and crooning or feature accoustic guitars and the piano. I think "If it's hurting you" features the banjo, and a nice banjo melody it is too. Some songs sound sort of show-tuney, or movie sound-trackey.

All in all, a strong album featuring some very good pop songs. But, like I say, Williams' lyrics are unconventional and idiosyncratically personal. I remember seeing one Williams video which had a similarly edgy video...not to all tastes, in other words. So, if you like lyrically edgy pop, this album is a terrific buy. N.B. you can get a sense of Williams' 'cheekiness' by checking out the album notes and photos on the front cover!

    4 out of 5 stars Robbie... Robbie...........2000-11-15

Again Robbie bogs us into the world of controversy. The video Rock DJ is sexually gory and you have to tolerate the nude escapades Robbie did on Vogue UK and in the album inlay.... Yes, you girls get this album for the nude pictures of Robbie. Controversy aside this is a damn good album... Not commercial sounding like his earlier Take That albums and not to snobbishly rockish... And my Spinning Around Kylie is greaaat tooo... Hope Robbie and Kylie get married and have pooooppish Kids.

5 out of 5 stars Could you be a Robbie Williams fan? Take the following test........2000-09-30

    1. Name three hits by Kylie Minogue.

If you answer includes "Better The Devil You Know" and "Spinning Around" score 10. If you answer includes "The Locomotion" score 5. If you answer what's a Kylie Minogue, score zero.

    2. In the song "Strong", Robbie says "my breath smells of a thousand fags". What does he mean?

If you answer too much smoking, score 10. If you answer anything else score zero.

    3. The game shown on the cover of this album is..?

If you answer Football, score 10. Soccer, 5. Anything else, 0.

    4. The end of this album contains a 17-minute gap of recorded silence, then, instead of a hidden track, Robbie announces that he doesn't feel like recording one this time. What's your reaction?

If you roll on the floor laughing, score 10. If you just don't get it, score 2. If you want your money back, score zero. If you immediately play the track again, score 100.

Personally, I love Robbie Williams music. I was championing him two years before his CD came out on this continent. But I just doubt that he's going to ever really become BIG in America. There are many reasons for this, label apathy, radio's reluctance to play anything by anyone over 20 these days, but most importantly Robbie steadfastly refuses to do things in an American way.

He is witty without dumbing down, vulgar without anger, self-effacing when most artists brag, and relentlessly, proudly British. His humour, his references, and his music are styled by a country that is these days as foreign to America as Khurdistan.

Yes, he's also one of the best live artists I've ever seen in my life, but not many have seen him live over here.

I wish Robbie the best, but I'm not holding my breath that this will be his breakthrough album.

But if you score above zero on the test, buy the CD.

5 out of 5 stars His most personal album to date!!!.......2000-09-27

I imported this cd instead of waiting for his US release date. This cd is not as good as I've Been Expecting You but it is on the same level as Life Thru A Lens. First off, Robbie is different than todays popstars. He is a real nature star unlike the corporate creations of pop today. I think he is also one hell of a rock star, he pulls it off onstage with ease and effortlessly; more so then our current rockstars. His third album is great, his lyrics are getting better and better. This is a more mature album than his pervious releases. It might need a few listens to grow on you, but this is the top of pop music nowadays. Robbie's music is the opposite of what Pop has become today. Robbie is what Pop music should be. The best songs on the cd are: Better Man, Supreme, If Its Hurting You, Singing for the Lonely, By All Means Necessary, and Road To Mandalay. The rest are good too. Kids too a little time to grow on me. Kylie is great and all, but Madonna should have done a duet with Robbie instead of wasting her time with Ricky Martin. I will spare you my hate Ricky story, but go and buy the cd. Robbie is the popstar of the future!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars hmmmmm.......2000-09-23

Well, if songwriters write about their lives, Robbie's had a rough life lately. The lyrics are intricate, but they are depressing. You tap along to the music until you really listen to the words. I can't listen to this CD all by itself. I have to have some other, happier music thrown in.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Too GREAT.......2003-01-15

I bought the canadian CD and was overwhelmed. The language isn't explicit as I personally thought it was in my expectations. It's an overwhelm charm. Although, the pictorial representation is explicit and influential, it's a GREAT CD. He definitely leads a great role model for all British music artists. Love it. 5 STARS.

Warning----the CD is unfortunately pictorally represented badly. Inside of the CD. 5 STARS!

5 out of 5 stars Robbie Williams is Supreme.......2001-08-21

Although I've heard some of Robbie WIlliams songs on the radio I've never bought one of his CD's. The previous reviews I read on Amazon were so good I thought I'd give it a try. To say that I really like this CD is an understatement: It's eclectic with Williams bouncing back and forth between hard-rock, tender ballads, infectious dance songs and back to hard rock. When I first heard "Supreme" I was amazed at the layers, beauty and simple greatness of the song. I can't seem to play it enough. It's been years since a song fired me up so much. Be warned that many of Williams songs aren't for the masses who like Christina, Brittany, N'Sync, etc. His lyrics are complex and introspective but work so well with the music. Try this CD if you're adventurous.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better then this!.......2001-06-19

robbie Williams has got to be one of the more accessable singers out there today. His lyrics make you think, make you sing and his music simply moves you. He can be catchy and up-beat in one song and serious in an other. He is like a good friend who knows how to cheer you up, who knows that life is filled with ups and downs. This Cd has got it all, dance numbers, thought provoking songs and a little romance thrown in. Robbie loves to sing and I would guess loves to party and it shows. Excellent album from a down to earth fun loving man. Hope there are more in the works. I have the Canadian version by the way which has Robbie singing in French and spanish on two bonus tracks. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Robbie's Cdn. Version.......2001-04-18

This is a wonderful CD! Musically, the style is more mature than "the ego has landed". The lyrics are interesting, & the melodies innovative. Road To Mandalay has quickly become one of my favorites, and it's a great surprise when you hear Ser Mejor and the French version of Supreme for the first time. As with "the ego has landed", there are some tracks on this one that just make you want to jump up and dance! If you've enjoyed past albums, then this is definately one you'll want to hear.

        5 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2000-12-12

Robbie William's latest release is pretty typical of Williams' music. The music on here is not as famous as his other releases, but if you enjoy Williams' other albums, you'll probably like this one.
