Live From Austin [Live]

Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Augmented by three horns, the Texas singer/harpist and his band pound out their late-1980s show, which includes several unctuous originals and McClinton's 1980 pop hit "Givin' It Up for Your Love." His shellacked smooth-and-easy combination of country and western, R&B, blues, and soul gives no sign of his roadhouse tutelage under Sonny Boy Williamson and Howlin' Wolf way back when. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

What k.d. lang branded "torch and twang" might serve as a starting point for a description of Neko Case's music, but the uniqueness of a style that incorporates country roots, punk attitude, and supper-club sophistication defies classification. Her 2003 debut performance on the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD) showcases Case's artistry in a stripped-down setting, with stand-up bassist Tom Ray serving as a one-man rhythm section, Jon Rauhouse providing multi-instrumental virtuosity on banjo and a variety of guitars, and Kelly Hogan supplying impeccable harmony support. Case was touring at the time behind her Blacklisted album, though the setlist strays farther. On "Hex," written by Freakwater's Catherine Irwin, Case and Hogan could pass as the Louvin Sisters, while Bob Dylan's "Buckets of Rain" receives a languid reading punctuated by Rauhouse's Hawaiian lap-steel guitar. "Deep Red Bells" emphasizes the western side of country & western, with the more experimental "Maybe Sparrow" combining banjo and edgy atmospherics. Throughout, the bare-bones arrangements let the songs breathe and Case's voice soar. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars ok.. not her best.......2007-07-26

This cd is nicely done but does not contain any uptempo songs which while maybe not what she hangs her hat on are still very enjoyable. This cd grows on you but has no songs that leap out and grab you. I rate this the weakest of her cd's to date.

5 out of 5 stars What A Songbird.......2007-05-23

Beautiful album from a wonderful singer. She mixes country and folk as well as anyone. You would never believe this is a live recording. Don't nit-pik - just listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This generation's Patsy Cline.......2007-03-26

Neko Case is this generation's Patsy Cline only with more attitude. Her appeal crosses over multiple genre's but you can't quite categorize her. Pick up any of her catalog and you'll find yourself searching for more.

4 out of 5 stars In Case of Neko.......2007-03-24

For some stupid reason I thought the songs would be new. Imagine my chagrin when I learned this was taped in 2003! Anyway, she is definately talented and I love her voice. However, Fox Confessor is my favorite of hers. Live at Austin is a good buy and I would recommend it or anything by her to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars great songs and a unique voice.......2007-03-14

This is my first Neko album and boy what an introduction! Neko has a unique voice with a little country twang in some songs and a sultry blues sound in others. It tough to identify her style, but if I had to I would say its bluegrass. I can't wait to get another one of her albums.

Product Description

The latest release from the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series of releases from the vaults of the award-winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show.

Dave Alvin s world lies somewhere on the margins the seedy bus stations, bars and endless boulevards of L.A., and the reality of California s underbelly of discontent. Alvin was originally a founding member of the punk/roots scene band the Blasters with his brother Phil. Over the years since he s continued to sharpen his skills as a singer, songwriter and musician. This Austin City Limits episode, recorded on January 29, 1999, includes songs from his current album at the time, Blackjack David, his best statement to date about love, hope and despair.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Best Live Dave Alvin CD.......2007-06-25

Great CD, superior to Out in California and Great American Music Galaxy, with blazing renditions of Out in California and especially, Fourth of July.

5 out of 5 stars Best yet from Dave Alvin.......2007-05-24

This may be the most well produced CD in recent years. Taken from the television show "Austin City Limits", it may be Dave Alvin's best effort to date. If you enjoyed "Public Domain", "King of California" and "West of the West" you will love this. With a combination of great rock and roll and contemporary folk, this CD hits the mark and more. In a time when many musicians just "crank it up" and play full tilt all night, the dynamics in "Barn Burnin'", "Mary Brown" and "Blackjack David" are an aural pleasure to behold. When Dave breaks into the chorus from the Sam Cooke classic "Cupid" at the end of "Border Radio", you'll get goose bumps. His rock and roll version of the Woody Guthrie classic "Do-Re-Me" is unsurpassed by anything released in the last 20 years.

Simply put, Dave writes beautiful songs about love and loneliness. His ability to lament the life that could have been along with his ability to celebrate the life that is, is inspirational at least, and quite possibly awe inspiring.

The musicians assembled for this recording are outstanding. In particular drummer Bobby Lloyd Hicks (arguably the best rock and roll drummer alive today) shows once again how less can be more. Another drummer may have overplayed these songs, but Lloyd is at his finest on this CD. Together with bassist Gregory Boaz, they form one of the tightest rhythm sections ever recorded.

If I could give this CD 10 stars I'd still try to give it 11.

3 out of 5 stars Take some NO-DOZE.......2007-05-15

I am a BIG Dave Alvin and Blasters fan and have been for 25 years. The songs chosen to be played here are on the mellow side of the tracks. Big mistake. A couple of the songs lean towards the good rockin' that Dave is so good at. The rest of them will put you to sleep. The reaction of the crowd shows that most of them agree with me. If this band was anyone else, I would give it 2 stars.

In this 2003 performance from the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD), New England's Susan Tedeschi demonstrates a range that extends well beyond her blues base. Following the blueprint employed by Bonnie Raitt a few decades earlier, she covers John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery" (a signature tune for Raitt), inserting a snippet from the Grateful Dead's "Sugaree." The piano balladry of her "Wrapped in the Arms of Another" could fit just fine on a Raitt album. The set also finds her sampling from the songbooks of Sly Stone ("You Can Make It If You Try"), Bob Dylan ("Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), and Stevie Wonder ("Love's in Need of Love Today"), in addition to the more straightforward blues of Koko Taylor ("Voodoo Woman"). Though Tedeschi's stinging lead guitar provides the focus, she receives strong support from a band featuring the interplay of electric pianist Jason Crosby (who doubles on violin) and William Green on Hammond B-3 organ. Highlights include a tribute to jam-band inspiration Col. Bruce Hampton on "Hampmotized" and the simmering "Wait for Me," with its echoes of Aretha Franklin. Tedeschi has yet to show the suppleness as a vocalist to complement her guitar chops, but the musical range she displays here bodes well for her artistic development. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding music marred by weak mixing.......2006-12-31

I've been a Susan Tedeschi fan for a while, and I was so excited to get this album for Christmas -- and overall, it's great music. Tedeschi is an outstanding blues/rock musician, and she's in great form with this recording from Austin City Limits.

I was really surprised, though, when I popped it in and heard nothing but Tedeschi's singing and the organ/synth. Yeah, the drums are present. During solos, you can sort of hear Tedeschi's excellent guitar. But the predominant instrument in the mix is that ever-present synth, and that is just not the right mix for her music.

Tedeschi is so good that this album is still excellent -- but more for the hard-core fans who can appreciate the alternate sound. The recording/mixing wasn't up to par, so if you've never heard Tedeschi before, go with one of her studio albums.

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but VERY Good!.......2006-06-11

Ms Tedeschi's rendition of "Angel From Montgomery" is worth the price of this CD. WONDERFUL!!! As great as Bonie Raitt does with the old John Prine tune, Tedeschi does better. Soulful and full of emotion. You feel the emptiness and the desire for that reprive. Just great!

5 out of 5 stars Like a live best of.......2006-02-08

With material from all her earlier CDs and a Sly and Family Stone cover not previously available, this serves as a live greatest hits or best of. I've seen her a few times live and this is very represenataive of her concert work also. The guitar work is fine but you can see the later material is emphasizing her vocals more than her playing.

5 out of 5 stars Susan Tedeski Rocks!.......2005-10-02

This is a fabulous CD of some of Susan's best songs! GREAT music with GREAT vocals as well as GREAT "jammin"!!! When you play it in your car, play it loud with the windows down to really appreciate it!!!! You'll be "jammin", too!!

5 out of 5 stars Susan Tedeschi-live from Austin.......2005-08-24

Seeing is better than just hearing; get the DVD version of this and see her blow away the blues. Her speaking voice is deceiving of her singing voice but style and skill all the way.
She is another pioneer woman in the blues world and has proven herself skilled and talented.
A must "see".....

I think everyone who hears Chris Tomlin will pretty much agree that he is an awesome singer and preformer but for me this CD put him over the top. The first song I heard from this CD was actually on the radio, the live version of How Great Is Our God. What an awesome song! Even though you will find all these songs spread out over his other CDs, this is a must for everyone's library because of the participation of the crowd as well as the way that Chris really seems to help us all to step right into the throne room of God.

This CD is a must have for all fans of contemporary Christian music, not just fans of Chris Tomlin. The live versions of How Great is Our God and If God is on Our Side are simply fantastic.

    Product Description

From the vaults of the award-winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show, this is the latest release in the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series.

Rock and Roll s the thing, and Jerry Lee s the King... or so said an English fan once upon a time somewhere. Elvis fans might dispute that title, but nobody else in the history of popular music would dare call himself The Killer. Of all the legends who came out of Sun Records in the 1950s Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison no one would have bet the last one standing would be the pill-popping, whiskey-guzzling, gun-waving hellion from Ferriday, La. Except The Killer, of course.

Jerry Lee Lewis took black rhythm & blues, white gospel and other funky Mississippi sounds and turned them into rock and roll. But Jerry Lee s life also is, and has always been, his piano; he has kicked and banged and set on fire (literally) many of them over the course of six-plus decades.

He almost never made it to Austin City Limits. He cancelled one appearance, and only weeks before this recording on October 17, 1983, his wife died in a freak swimming pool accident at their home. But he did make it, and what we have here is one of the most amazing performances ever to go down on the ACL stage. Throughout the day he was a perfect gentleman, showing up on time and acting very graciously to one and all, but once he hit the stage, all hell broke loose. The songs speak for themselves; they re ALL here.

For many years later, Jerry Lee would carry a tape of this show to play for friends (and himself, many times). When producers tried to book him again for a return performance, the response was, Jerry Lee doesn t think he could possibly do a better show.

This CD captures all the hits and more, and includes songs that were never aired on the original TV broadcast.

5 out of 5 stars A Master at the peak of his craft.......2007-05-07

What can I write that hasn't already been said of Eric Johnson?

Hmmm... Well, if you appreciate some really wonderful and melodic progressive rock -- not the modern reflections of that classic form -- but truly inspired and creative blending of many styles of music, then this performance DVD is well worth the price. You will come to appreciate the attention to detail that Eric has applied to crafting not just 'songs', but compositions of the highest calibre.

Oh, and you don't have to be a musician to appreciate good music. This stuff is for everyone who loves a well written tune.

    'Nuff said!

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece from a master guitarist.......2007-03-10

I saw Eric Johnson for the first time shortly after the release of White Cliffs of Dover as a single. He opened for Rush. I remember Eric's performance. I don't remember Rush's.

This is a great recording and shows the diversity of Eric's taste and style.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-27

I love this CD and the DVD is awesome!!!!!!! His versions of Jimi Hendrix songs are great as well. The beginning of "Trail of Tears" really shows how talented and how clean Eric plays.

5 out of 5 stars thank you, austin city limits!.......2006-08-17

This is the cd I play at night to scare the deer away from the road (I live way out in the country); just open the car window, crank the volume and rock on. I walk into work saying, "What?" Sure is worth the jangled eardrums, though. From the opening "Righteous" to the melodic and terrific "Cliffs Of Dover" Eric does not leave you sleepy at all. This is from early in his career, but having seen him last April, I am happy to report he has lost none of his fire. I have never heard a bad rendition of "Camel's Night Out" and the one on this disc does not disappoint. Also nice is "Trail Of Tears" and "Desert Rose"; "Steve's Boogie" is a snappy little gig that could be longer, in my opinion;and there's the somewhat cool-jazz of "East Wes". I do tend to skip over the cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" - SRV was the only one, to me, who was able to cover Jimi well enough to listen to. This cd, however, is still five-star as far as I'm concerned.

    5 out of 5 stars Guitar Mastery.......2006-08-08

For some reason, Eric Johnson waited a long time to release this gem. Recorded in 1988, this live outing displays Mr. Johnson in top form as a virtuoso of the electric guitar.

His tone is instantly recognizible without ever sounding cliche, cloying, or boring. Like fellow Texan (now no longer of this earth), Stevie Ray Vaughn, Mr. Johnson can seemingly play lead and rhythm guitar simultaneously. I would like to see the video to understand how he accomplishes this. (And I did see him live at the kick-off concert in Denver of his tour with Joe Satriani a few months ago. It was superb, but they only let him play for one hour.) His transitions between various tones are seamless and masterful. His solos are fluid, firey, and always well thought out. There is no shredding for shreedding sake here. Mr. Johnson is far too tasteful for that kind of exhibitionism. (I won't name names.)

Mr. Johnson is supported strongly by bass and drums. His singing is sparse and not annoying, although not on the level of his playing. (Who could expect that?) The Hendrix covers are superb. Few people can pull that off.

To show his versatility, Mr. Johnson gives a beautiful rendition of Wes Montgomery's classic, "East Wes." Few rock guitarists would ever even attempt that.

As the ebullient ringleader of this all-star Lone Star quartet, Doug Sahm tells this 1990 Austin City Limits crowd that "it's rock and roll conjunto time!" Such a description barely hints at the raucous vitality of the band's bilingual, Tex-Mex border music. The set (also available on DVD) finds Freddy Fender resurrecting his country smashes "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," while the tremulous vocals of some of his earlier, regional hits suggest that he is to Tejano music what Aaron Neville is to New Orleans soul. Conjunto accordion kingpin Flaco Jimenez provides rollicking instrumental accents throughout, while singing with Fender on some of the Spanish-language material. From the rock and roll side, Sahm and keyboardist Augie Meyers reprise their hits from the Sir Douglas Quintet's 1960s heyday, with "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino" steeped in the same musical roots they share with Fender and Jimenez. Such raucous, festive interplay plainly enjoys a home-field advantage in Austin, where the performance finds the foursome hailed as conquering heroes. (The release serves as a memorial to Sahm, who died in 1999 and to whom the album is dedicated.) --Don McLeese

      5 out of 5 stars Tex-Mex At it's Best !!.......2007-03-27

This is my all time favorite "cheer-me-up" album. As soon as the music starts, I just start smiling. I love the enthusiasm and the great talent that is displayed. The mingling of voices from both north and south of the border is a tribute to our southern society, showing that we all can and do get along wonderfully when we put our minds to it.

5 out of 5 stars Impossible to find something better than this!!.......2006-12-30

I already wrote a review on this incredible musical event after watching
the show on DVD so my opinion on the CD version cannot be different.
The only sad thing about this is that both Doug and Freddy are not with
us anymore but we have their wonderful 1990 Austin Texas concert and
we can either listen to it or watch the incredible musical abilities
of this foursome. The best Conjunto Tex-Mex rock & roll gathering ever!!!

Those who have experienced a Robert Earl Keen show in his native Texas know it can be hard to hear the artist amid all the whooping and partying of his rabidly loyal following. This 2001 taping from the Austin City Limits series gives the singer-songwriter's range the attention it deserves. An eight-minute rendition of Keen's signature anthem, "The Road Goes On Forever," shifts that epic into overdrive, as the furious interplay of guitarist Rich Brotherton and steel guitarist Marty Muse finds the band firing on all cylinders. Yet the subtler selections are every bit as impressive, with his reflective rendition of Townes Van Zandt's "Snowin' on Raton" and the brooding melancholy of Johhny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone" highlighting the performance. Though Austin City Limits typically condenses an artist's appearance into a half hour for airing, this CD (with the performance also available as a DVD) presents the full studio concert. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars So What If He Can't Sing.......2006-07-26

Okay, REK can't sing. Neither can Bob Dylan. That's not the point. When you combine this excellent backing group with the gravelly voice of REK it works. It's really about the energy and the story telling anyway. Personally, I love this recording front to back. If you're a long time REK fan you already own this... if you're new to REK this album is for you.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite REK album.......2006-06-09

This is my favorite record REK has made. No. 2 Live Dinner was very disappointing because you can't hear Keen for all of the yelling/singing from the crowd, it ruins that album. "The Live Album" is a great one, but this one is even better IMO. What you've got here is an older REK with his full catalog with him - without the drunken fans screaming over his voice. He is great live and this time around you can actually hear him clearly.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best of the Best.......2005-11-12

I'm not from Texas and I'm a relatively new REK fan, but this album was something of a disappointment for me. I own a number of his discs including "What I Really Mean" and "The Party Never Ends" and I love what I hear. I picked up some older ones too and loved them. I was excited to buy this live experience and it leaves me luke warm.

For a man who has a vocal range of about five notes, you'd think he could sing those few notes in tune. The opening track -- a rather odd version of "Dreadful Selfish Crime" sounds like a tone deaf drunk with laryngitis singing really bad karaoke. I could do without it. It hurts my ears. In fact, if I didn't have faith in the artist I would have turned the disc off after this track.

The band on this CD really rocks. That's the saving grace of the disc I think. "The Road Goes on Forever" is superb and REK even manages to do a decent job on the vocals on "Merry Christmas from the Family" and "Not a Drop of Rain." The instrumental music really drives this performance and it's too bad that the lead vocals can't seem to stay remotely in the same key as the rest of the band on most of the songs.

OK, I know that Robert Earl Keen is not known for the quality of his vocals, but for the intense story-telling and imaginative insight into humanity and its foibles. Love that part, for sure. He's kind of a Texas Bob Dylan of the millennium. But, I have to be truthful and say that this album disappoints because of the very tenuous vocals and the way that so many of the really hit-you-where-it-lives lyrics are lost in the mumble.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-11-06

No. 2 Live Dinner has always been my favorite Robert Earl Keen CD. However, I think Live from Austin may be even better. The sound is better than Dinner and the tracks are a really good cross-section of REK's best stuff. Aside from a "new" version of Dreadful Selfish Crime (my favorite REK song) that is, well, different, the CD is flawless (I like the track, I'm just too accustomed to the versions on No. 2 Live Dinner and on Party Songs). I would LOVE to see the DVD, but cannot find here in stores (but I'm seeing REK live tomorrow night, so the problem will soon be solved).

        Product Description

From the vaults of the award-winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show, this is the latest release in the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series.

Recorded live on October 23, 1988, this CD captures all the hits and more, and includes songs that were never aired on the original TV broadcast.

Maybe it was an epiphany of sorts. As Buck tells it, One day I was watching Austin City Limits and Dwight Yoakam was on, then he dedicates the program to Buck Owens. So I said, I m going to see what this kid is like. It wasn t long after that he was on stage with Dwight singing his old hits. Buck was bitten by the bug to return to music, after calling it quits almost ten years earlier.

This man from Sherman, Texas probably best-known as the wide-grinning rube on Hee Haw for so many years started a country music revolution. Or more accurately, a counter-revolution. It was called the Bakersfield Sound, He and fellow revolutionary Merle Haggard were cranking out raw, hard-driving honky-tonk music that stood the country-pop coming out of Nashville on its head.
