Product Description
This debut is built wholly from synthesizers (no guitars), live drums, and the familiar warmth of David Bazan's (Pedro The Lion) syrupy vocal delivery. Headphones tip their hat to modern stalwarts like Depeche Mode, The Flaming Lips, Kraftwerk, and Radiohead, who seamlessly integrate electronics into the fabric of rock and pop. Avoiding kitsch and cuteness, Headphones deliver deft arrangements with timeless melodies and uncanny lyrical depth.

5 out of 5 stars Pedro meets digital.......2006-02-09

This album is the love child of Pedro the Lion and Postal Service. It would be if David Bazan and Beck merged into one musician and made an record...a great record.

5 out of 5 stars Another great underknown project.......2006-01-18

Many of us are familiar with Pedro the Lion. I have been a fan of their's for a couple of years now and so when Headphones was released, I bought it just because of my allegiance to David Bazan's (the mind behind both outfits) music.

This album has drawn much negative response from major reviewers because of its so-called depressing mood. While I see this argument, I don't get caught up in moods. When the songwriting is as clever and solid as it is, the lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation all solid as well, I cannot bash it.

One of the most initially striking features of this record is the quite unique sound. All sounds were created with synthesizers and real drums. There isn't much else out there like it. Some have tried to compare it to the highly acclaimed project by Dntel and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, "The Postal Service" because of its electronic sound (and, I assume, the mixture of a successful indie-rock singer/songwriter with this electronic music). This is a loose comparison at best. Take Headphones for what it is, a stab at creativity. With so much new music arriving these days with nothing new or different, Headphones should be embraced.

4 out of 5 stars A very good effort.......2005-10-05

I'm a fan of Pedro the Lion and this new release took a little while to settle with me, but now that it has... i like it a lot. it's nice to see David move in a different direction musically, although his songwriting style and deft, story-like lyrics are still very much intact. i've always enjoyed his melodies the most. they just stick in your brain like the poppiest hooks you can imagine. he reminds me of elvis costello in a weird way. if you're into great melodies and intelligent lyrics that tell stories about life both good and bad take a listen. it's similar to Pedro the Lion however Headphones takes a much simpler route pairing traditional songs and writing with real drums, keyboards and electronic instruments in place of guitars. David Bazan always challenges us to listen and think. one of the great musical minds of the last 10 years, no wonder he's influenced everyone from Helio Sequence to The Way It Is.

4 out of 5 stars I'll be wearing these headphones for years to come..........2005-09-07

...i've been a Pedro The Lion fan for years, now...everything that David does is just amazing...his lyrics are fresh and far from anything that any indie band is putting out these days...i pre-ordered this album the day it came up for pre-order...i was at a Pedro show, and he said that he got the idea for the album after listening to The Flaming Lips......David's lyrics are just so straight forward...nothing's held back...that's what i love about it...and this album goes by the same rules...it's pretty much Pedro with syths...buy this album NOW

5 out of 5 stars Like Brian Wilson for the 21st century.......2005-07-09

I too saw these guys live, at Doug Fir in Portland OR (there was a long wait for our table so we thought "what the heck, let's check out the band") and was very, very impressed. The stripped down arrangements belie the very solid crafstamanship in the songs. Standout track for me is track 2.

Nice to hear that people are actually writing songs again.

One of the most unique, if misunderstood, talents to emerge from the vaunted 1980s Los Angeles punk/new-wave era, Stan Ridgway arguably owes more than most to the art-rock and modern jazz which crucially informed that scene. He's shrugged off MTV's stereotyping of his former band Wall of Voodoo to forge a rich, if stubbornly independent, body of solo work, freely retooling his sound and viewpoint along the way. Black Diamond, his 1995 outing (and one of the best, if sorely underappreciated, singer-songwriter albums of the '90s) placed Ridgway in a spare acoustic setting far removed the propulsive synth-sense of The Big Heat, his expressive baritone taking on a new warmth and range. Anatomy is an attempt to move both forward and reconcile the various aspects of his previous work. The stirring, elegiac opener "Mission Bell" adds depth and dimension to Black Diamond's tack, while "Train of Thought," "Susie Before Sunrise," and "Valerie is Sleeping" supplant Ridgway's trademark seamy-side-of-life storytelling with more personal--if oblique--observations, set with confidence against music that freely mixes electronics, acoustic guitar, and his plaintive harmonica. Three surprisingly varied instrumentals cue listeners that Ridgway now splits his time between songwriting and film scoring. Ridgway is a true musical rebel, but one with a rich sense of history and no time for the cheap encumbrances of fashion. --Jerry McCulley

Difficult to wax poetic about music. The person who said that Ridgway is the Dashiell Hammett of music was on target. Every song on this CD is great, and they are excellently organized. Start with Mission Bell and keep listening.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie Continues: Stan's Best (So Far).......2000-09-22

"Anatomy" is another incredible soundtrack for the underbelly of America. Stan is the most under rated songwriter on this side of the Atlantic, with 12 new examples that labor the point.

The cover art is a nod to film scoring, with a nice take/update of the jacket for Duke Ellington's "Anatomy Of A Murder" soundtrack, by way of the graphics used in the TV show "The Wild Wild West."

The two tracks pulled from the "Film Songs" EP sound a bit better here. "Susie Before Sunrise" sounds a little more crisp, while "Deep Blue Polka Dot" (aka "Deep Inside We're Blue") gets a bit of a remix.

The use of instrumental interludes are perfected on this record. You can almost see the betrayal (A desparate kiss? Or maybe a tired sunrise) during "Murray's Steakhouse Story," while "Mickey The Priest" is an absolutely creepy interlude, bringing "Valerie Is Sleeping" and "Mama Had A Stove" together brilliantly. The triptych works well as a companion to Richard Thompson's "Killing Jar," while "Sixteen Tons" is going to stand as the definitive read for a long, long time.

A five star rating for a six star record.

"Maybe someday you'll finally reveal / something you stole, or something you'll steal."

5 out of 5 stars Anatomy.......2000-06-23

Stan Ridgway's new album continues his string of wonderful songs with lyrics that help you escape from everyday life. THis album would make an excellent purchase for any true music lover.

4 out of 5 stars Stan Ridgway - masterful storyteller.......2000-06-15

Ridgway continues his spinning of tales & stories in a slightly off-beat, slightly twisted way. The balance of upbeat tunes here and slow ballads show great compsition of the CD itself (somewhat rare these days). Anyone looking for an intelligent, slightly offbeat, contemporary singer-songwriter-type CD will love this.

English outfit the Herbaliser take their sophomore LP, Blow Your Headphones, into cinematic territory, creating an imaginary soundtrack (complete with opening and ending credits, a theme song, and an intermission) to a cheekily British dark comedy with their hip-hop-oriented take on jazz, easy listening, and suspense music. DJ Ollie Teeba serves as a conductor of sorts for the band; his featured takes, such as "Intermission," "Shocker Zulu," and "More Styles," wield deft cuts and scratches on his turntable as a constant reminder that the band's soul is firmly rooted in an underground hip-hop perspective. Unlike much of American hip-hop, which tends to be MC-driven, the Herbaliser's strength does not hinge on lyrics, though vocal tracks like "New + Improved" (featuring the stunning verbals of female MC What What of Natural Resource) and "Saturday Night" (with British rappers Fabian and Big Ted) are just as solid. A beacon in illuminating the U.K. hip-hop sensibility to the global community. --Tamara Palmer

5 out of 5 stars Yes....'Blow's Your Headphones' indeed!!!.......2003-10-31

The Herbaliser certainly knows how to throw down a Hip-hop or two, and this his second studio album (along with "Something wicked this way comes) is by far his most accomplished work. Although far more of an instrumental album than "Something wicked this...", it's a undeniably a far more kaleidoscopic affair, with the few vocals tracks that are in this album, sitting very comfortably with the Stoner grooves scattered throughout the album. In fact it feels part `Kruder & Dorfmeister', part Dj Shadow, and as highly gifted as both.....The Herbaliser keeps the listener completely on his/her toes by throwing innovative sampling and rough & ready beat heavy jazz tracks in amongst the cut & paste Hip-Hop tracks. In fact it's been constructed in along the lines of a scripted television show, with an introduction, intermission (which are so fantastic....that to not expand it into a fully fledged track seems like something of an oversight), as well as end credits. This album due to its emphasis more on non-vocal tracks, is possibly slightly more suited to enthusiasts, rather than casual listeners (not that casual listeners wouldn't get superb mileage out of it), but it all adds up to become recognised as amongst the very best of the constantly growing Ninja Tune catalogue, that deserves investigation for people curious to seek out artists that are pushing the Hip-Hop envelope and an essential purchase for Ninja Tune fans.

3 out of 5 stars Good, solid stuff.......2002-05-26

There's a nice mix of pace and style on this CD, and even a spoken-word beatnik style hip-hop track that's actually worth listening to. Herbaliser has good beats and if there's any weakness it's too much vocal work. Herbaliser is best with vocals at a minimum or else it starts to lose it's identity and seem more like a fringe rap album than ace mixing and cuts. Still worth it but look into Thievery Corporation for a something more along the above lines.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic!.......2002-02-25

Quite the best underground band i have ever heard, from Drum & Bass, to HipHop & Rap, till TripHop you can have anything from them...

I actually dont want to put them on some style allone, check them out yourself!

4 out of 5 stars Fresh for 1997 and beyond, you suckas.......2001-10-01

I've finally figured these guys out. I copped "Blow your Headphones" first, then "Very Mercanary"-- only when I finally got "Remedies" did I realize that these cats were a hip-hop jazz band, in the PUREST sense. And with their sophmore effort, one can see the obvious growth and sharpening of musical skills that true artists experience with their second album( i.e., The Roots, Common, ATCQ ). More discplined tracks makes for pure listening pleasure; witness the abrupt but timely jump from "Ginger Jumps the Fence" ( puncutated with skidding sounds, no less ) to the laid back, jazzed out "Put it on Tape". Jazzy cuts with a noir feel to it best descibes this group, and they are a bit more lively then, say, DJ Cam's "Mad Blunted Jazz" ( due to, of course, the actual use of live instruments ). Another notable, "Mr. Chombee has the Flaw", almost goes to full-tilt Swing, but not quite. Most cuts include some great scratching and the tracks with What What are ludicrously head-nod inducing, though the one with Fabian and Big Ted try too hard, and this reveiwer recommends skippage on that one. This is one for the Beat Generation.

5 out of 5 stars ~Amazing Work~.......2001-03-16

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite cds among my 1,000+ collection. An amazing collection of funky instrumental beats and high-quality musical rap. Get this and listen to it often. =)

On another note, people have been asking about the incredible rapper "What what" who tears stuff up on "The Blend" and other Herbaliser song. After some long searching, I found her. Check out the strict rap group "Natural Resource". "Negro League Baseball" is one of their big hits, she's on the top of her game there. Also any Whatwhat fan should check out "I love this world"... this is where "The Blend" lyrics came from, a little extended and different. Quality stuff. =)

There is a certain kind of "brilliance", or "sheen", or EXTREME-positiveness (hard to describe) in this music, that I've never encountered in other music. If you like "going to other places" with music, especially truly uplifting places, man oh man, you've found the right album! 5 out of 5 stars Electronic version of Classical Music.......2005-06-20

This is like listening to classical music - but music created with modern electronic technology. Each piece is a "jewel" in itself. And the over-all "vibe" of the album is consistently positive. There is a level of "care in every little detail" here that is quite rare in modern music. This is definitely not "background music". It's the opposite: It is music that is profoundly interesting to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful visualisations / merveilleuse visualisations.......2000-03-13

Seeking for a true happiness, I long ago involved in various techniques and visions to enhance my consciousness level and to propose a better world for all. Beauty in architecture, landscapes, clothing, are indispensable for a beautiful life, but also music of various kind, appropriate for various purposes. Iasos «Elixir» focused mainly on a sometimes strange and always beautiful vibration of angelic realms, achieved with harmonious and gentle synthesiser sounds, sometimes more powerful. It is very suitable for meditation, especially visualisation of pure and high vibes, poetical landscapes, other worlds. I found somewhere that Iasos was the Mozart of the New Age. Sure he is among the bests. Anyway I enjoyed very much Iasos music since a long time, and hearing it again carry for me numerous rememberings of marvellous visualisations!

Please visit my site «For Happiness of all beings», with a novel which can be read using Iasos music as a background (samples). Be quiet, make silence, let the music lead your imagination, and enjoy!

        Richard Trigaux
