The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder - Great Voice.......2007-07-06

This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.

5 out of 5 stars Not a voice.......an instrument.......2007-02-17

Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap
and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her
one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her
friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far.

5 out of 5 stars the best female singer of the great american standards........2006-07-24

i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway
musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.
i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER

5 out of 5 stars The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder.......2006-02-23

A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder shines with her Broadway album.......2006-02-18

Wow! Linda Eder has an outstanding voice. She sells Broadway in the styles of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. After hearing this you will want more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent country rock.......2007-05-21

An excellent example of country rock, very much in the Poco mould, but clearly influenced by their having been Dan Fogelberg's backing band. A melodic disc of well-played tracks, professionally produced, and not a dull track on the album. The second album (Mr Lucky), with only two of the band members left, was a big disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Eagles look alike.......2006-08-28

A nice album that reminds a lot The Eagles. Not all the tracks are great, but that also applies to the initial Eagles records...

4 out of 5 stars Fool's Gold.......2006-03-14

I originally purchased this music on vinyl back in the 70's. It's hard to believe that a mere 30 or so years have passed since I've enjoyed this group. I originally was introduced to Fool's Gold while attending a Dan Fogelberg concert in which they were playing back-up for Dan. They were great then and are great now! the Compact disc seems to be mastered and mixed far better than the original vinyl recording. I highly recommend that you give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars "Fools Gold" first - Remastered! (the right way this time).......2005-08-19

This is the first "Fools Gold" recording - from the mid 70's - this time licensed and released by Music Mill Entertainment out of Nashville. The artwork is different and the insert card offers the bare minimum - but the songs are all there and for the first time offered as a high quality, great-sounding CD.
The previous issue (the 90's version, anyway - & most likely the version still available as an expensive Japanese import) - suffered from signal processing "abuse/over use" - in places squeezing the resonance and fidelity right out of the recorded music.
This version is clean, clear, has pretty good kick drum/bass guitar "punch" & is reasonably resonant. Except for the opening vocal statements of "I Will Run" (for instance) there's almost no audible "70's tape hiss" at all - (perhaps at the cost of some of the original warmth and "ring"?) - but it's still a great sounding tribute to a wonderful group & time in our musical history.
Hard to compare to the original without a turntable hooked up...but, remember when musicianship mattered?
This recording honors that and lets it shine!

4 out of 5 stars Re released Mid seventies country rock.......2005-05-22

This album was originally released in 1976 and until recently could only be obtained as a CD in the US as an import. Prior to making this album Fools Gold had been Dan Fogelberg's backing band and two of the compostions on this CD were written by him, the remainder by members of the band.
The music style is mid seventies country rock with the country component really just some colouring with occasional pedal steel guitar. Because it was produced by Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Glyn Johns and John Stronach, the feel is very much like On the border / One of these nights period Eagles.
The first song 'Coming out of Hiding' written by 3 members of the band, sounds very much like Richie Furay singing a Souther Hillman Furay band song. The second song 'Rain oh rain' was quite a big hit single. Written by Denny Henson, it is the albums premier show piece and really is a flawlessly produced well written, pedal steel flavoured track. 'Choices' is co written with D Fogelberg and is a pleasant mainstream mid paced West Coast song. 'Rolling Fields and meadows' is a slower environmental song and features some major-seventh chords while 'Sailing to Monterey' written by Tom Kelly is more upbeat and a celebration of the marine environment metaphor. 'I will run' is the most country flavoured track, kind of hoe downish and is followed by a rendition of Fogelberg's 'Old Tennessee' - a very pleasant tune about distance between loved ones. 'One by one' is competent but a rather clinical attempt at the West Coast genre, 'The way love grows' sounds like an Orlean's ballad and the last song 'Love me through and through' is more slow paced West Coast from the pen of Fogelberg.
The re - release of this CD is very welcome. If you like mid seventies country rock/mainstream pop rock and haven't heard it before or want to replace the LP, I would highly recommend it. It's not up there with 'Sweetheart', 'One of these nights', or 'A good feeling to know' but it's nevertheless very good country flavoured rock.
Unfortunately the CD artwork doesnt duplicate the original LP release but it is quite well done nevertheless. The band made one more CD 'Mr Lucky' which is also of a good standard without having a hit song as a highlight.

After years of searching I finally struck Gold, and had to order "Mr Lucky" & the "Fools Gold" first album.
I didn't even blink at the [money amount]price which included handling & shipping, but winced a bit upon receipt when I had to fork out another [money amount]in UK customs & postage charges!.
Oh well, I still consider that it was my lucky day to find two of my favourite 70's albums on cd, there is no doubt about it Fools Gold were (are?) absolutely brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars WERE LUCKY TO GET "MR. LUCKY" ON CD.......2001-08-25

It's about time that they released the 2nd album of FOOL'S GOLD on CD. When you listen to Mr. Lucky you will see how the band progressed from being DAN FOGELBERG'S back up band to a group that could stand on it's own two feet. The songs on this CD are much better than the 1st FOOL'S GOLD CD, not to say the 1st one was bad but they really improved the sound on this one. The song CAPTAIN is my favorite one on this CD, it tells a great story. I just wished they would of stayed together for more albums.... The two main front men for the group are DENNY HENSON and TOM KELLY they did all of the singing. I don't know what DENNY HENSON is up to these days but TOM KELLY is still in the industry singing back-up vocals on many artist CD projects. So enjoy this one it's the last from a great sounding band from the country rock days of the 70's...they truly were GOLD!

5 out of 5 stars LUCK HAS ARRIVED!.......2001-07-25

I have been waiting patiently for this follow-up to the debut album, as my memory reminded me how much better the songwriting had been than "Fools Gold," a great record in its own right. I may be 47, but my memory still serves me well. After putting it on and cranking it up, a big smile came across my face, for two reasons. One, the songs still hold up (even though my wife calls it impossibly retro), and the re-mastering is done much better than the first, with the bass now a more punched up member of the mix. From "Sweet Country Air" to "Gypsy Brew" to "Captain," anybody who enjoys the country rock genre would highly enjoy this record. I stick by the 5 stars, but if I had a complaint, it would be the over-production of a few numbers, but better that than under produced. Just having David Foster on keyboards insures a certain amount of polish to the overall sound. All in all, a very satisfying album, one that will get played as much today as it was 25 years ago!!

4 out of 5 stars Hazlewood Rarities.......2007-04-11

Like many others my age, I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to Lee Hazlewood or his music while he was in the semi-limelight, but came to know and love his music much later on. Several years ago, I chanced to hear a compilation of covers of Lee Hazlewood songs called Total Lee. I liked it and became hooked almost immediately. Since then, I have acquired most available Hazlewood recordings and have become somewhat of a connoisseur of his dark humor and ribald connotations.
With the recent acquisition of the double reissue of Poet, Fool, or Bum/Back On the Street Again, I am well on my way to completion of my Hazlewood CD collection. Both of these records (here combined) were released only in Europe in the mid-70s, so listening to this is to hear what he was doing at a time when many thought he had disappeared.
It took me a couple of listens to really like this, but I eventually came around. This is far more country than pop. While these are not his best records, there is a lot here to like. My favorites are: Poet, Fool, or Bum; Kari; Feathers, Nancy and Me; Back On the Street Again; Your Thunder and Your Lightning; Suddenly Tennessee, Dolly and Hawkeye, and Dolly Parton's Guitar. Hearing once again how lyrically clever Hazlewood can be, I can see why so many alt-rock musicians look to him for inspiration.
If you have yet to hear this bunch of Hazlewood rarities, give it a listen. In addition to the CD, the buyer gets an informative booklet. At the low price on offer here, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Can Hazlewood do any wrong? I haven't heard it..........2006-08-25

Here ya got 2 great albums by Mr. Hazlewood. The songs Poet, Fool, or Bum (one of Lee's greatest), Heaven is my Woman's Love, and Smokey Put a Sweat on Me are excellent additions to the Hazlewood catalogue. Some of the songs have a bit of a 70's feel to them, but I dig the 1970's, probably the last really creative decade in America. Add another CD to your Hazlewood catalogue....

5 out of 5 stars On David Burgess............2005-02-20

I bought this CD directly from the artist himself after hearing him perform several of the pieces live. David Burgess is guitarist of extraordinary talent and broad interest. This CD contains beautiful pieces from both South America and Spain that are intricately performed with great depth of emotion. I would recommend this disc for any true music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for Another Great CD.......2003-05-20

Wherever you are, David Burgess, don't get exhaust yourself concertizing. Get back in the studio and record another excellent CD! Your talent is much too good to let slip away in the ephemeral wind; crystallize it on CD for everyone to hear long after your fine concerts are memories. Yeah, I guess I'm begging you to lay down more brilliant recordings. It can be Latin American, Spanish, Brazilian--anything. Just do it! ...

5 out of 5 stars great variety, a true virtuoso.......2002-01-29

David Burgess is one of those artists that is a total gem to find. He doesn't have a "big name" or a huge recording contract, but when it comes down to what matters (namely playing well) he can totally deliver the goods. Not only is he technically amazing (I've seen him in concert and he honestly didn't hit a single bad note), he plays with an incredible amount of soul. You can tell both on record and live, that he breathes this music and that it truly means the world to him.

Not only is the album a varied (yet consistent and thematic) but he employs a wide range of techniques to achieve his amazing sound: "Samba do Aviao" is breathtaking in terms of speed and beauty, the rhytmic oddities and brilliant use of percussive effects in "Berimbau" is unreal, "La Catedral" is sublime and almost played at a whisper, yet he breathes new life into familiar favorites like Isaac Albeniz's "Leyenda." This is one of the most creative albums of any genre that I've heard, but it is by far the best guitar album I own (and one of the best I've ever heard.) Another thing that makes this album so great is how rare some of this material is, some of these are complete gems and not at all in the standard repertoire.

And if you have the chance...GO SEE HIM IN CONCERT...its even better than the superb album.

4 out of 5 stars Silver (and Gold) Nuggets.......2001-11-20

I bought this CD at one of Burgess' concerts (in Virginia). He plays with much strength, variety of technique, and tonal quality; moreover, he has excellent command of the rhythm required for this mainly Latin American collection. My favorites are the hypnotically delightful "Seis por Derecho" and "La Misionera," which has a driving and catchy rhythm. I find almost every other piece enjoyable except for the over-recorded "Leyenda" and the somewhat ponderous piece by Rodrigo (whom I'm still a big fan of, nonetheless). It would be nice if those two were replaced by a few of the other interesting Brazilian pieces I heard at the concert. Fortunately, I was told that Burgess might put out more Brazilian recordings later in 2002. I'm very much looking forward to hearing them.

5 out of 5 stars Gold's Gold.......2007-06-04

Ernest Gold worked in Hollywood for several decades and was Stanley Kramer's composer of choice. While Kramer's films now seem heavyhanded and a trifle pompous (esp. "Inherit the Wind"), Gold always scored with a deft touch. "On the Beach" is, to my mind, his greatest achievement, a score that distills the tragedy and horror of the film's story of mankind's nuclear end without the melodramatic flourishes of Kramer's direction. Like the "Wind" score, which used "Give the Old-Time Religion" as a principal theme, this one famously is built on "Waltzing Matilda," and the range of emotions Gold's variations and the superb orchestrations create is amazing. I saw the movie in theater when I as 16 and bought the soundtrack in mono (on Roulette records) at the time. There was later a stereo issue which I was never able to find until this CD. It's fantastic and I highly recommend it. Frankly, I never listen to the score for "Santa Victoria," one of Kramer's waning 60s efforts.

5 out of 5 stars On the Beach.......2005-09-27

The music that accompanies this profound story set in beautiful Melbourne literally at the end of the world is Ernest Gold's many variations of Waltzing Matilda, a tune that personifies a nation in a celebration of freedom and self esteem.

Stanley Kramer used Waltzing Matilda in a sequence set at a vacation area, sung raucously and then gently by a group of fishermen. He liked it so much that he directed Ernest Gould to make the tune a recurring theme throughout the film. Curiously, the original use of Waltzing Matilda is missing from the soundtrack album.

The liner notes on this CD are extensive and very interesting. They include the album covers from when these soundtracks were originally issued as LPs, On the Beach in 1959 and The Secret of Santa Vittoria in 1969 and 1986. This CD is clearly a labor of love for the producers. They've done a great job with material for which they obviously have tremendous respect.

Only 3000 copies of the CD were made, so get yours now.

5 out of 5 stars The Wide Range of Ernest Gold.......2005-04-10

I firmly believe that one of the major criteria for a soundtrack is how well it plays apart from the film from which it is dervied. If that is the case, then we have a winner here with two different scores from two very different films. The score to the original film version of "On the Beach" (which I have desired for years) goes from romantic to frightening just like the film with its' message of nuclear doom. The themes for Peter and Mary and Moira are gentle pieces fillled with the sense of young love and a woman of the world. While it does seem that "Waltzing Matilda" is used too much, Gold's use of the song is very well done. The second film, "The Secret of Santa Vittoria" stands as well, too. The "Song of SV", again, is used quite a bit, but it is a nice, sweet, lyrical melody that doesn't grow dull with repetition. In short, if you liked the original "On the Beach" or "SSV", then these need to be in your collection. Well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Really terrific.......2003-12-14

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I really like this recording. Mike Holoway and Louise Gold don't equal the brilliant and authoritative performances of Newley and Quayle, but they do very, very well.

I'm puzzled by the hostility that the performances of Holoway and Gold have provoked from most of the other reviewers. And I would think that some of the Newley lovers would be pleased that that the people at JAY think highly enough of this score to have produced a complete recording of it, even if they didn't love the result. Instead, they seem affronted by the idea that anyone would dare produce a recording with someone other than Newley as Littlechap.

Holoway has a more pleasing voice than Newley, and his acting of the songs satisfied me completely. Obviously, Newley had an authority in these songs that no one else will ever have. But Holoway is excellent.

And I think that Gold is often as funny as Quayle. There are definitely places where Quayle is absolutely matchless, brilliant and beyond comparison. But Gold is very good.

This recording is well-conducted, the orchestra plays terrifically, the orchestrations sound fabulous, and the supporting cast is fine. And it contains the entire score.

I've heard almost all of the releases in the JAY Masterworks series, and I think this is one of the best. Some of the other reviewers seemed to have been upset that neither of the recordings featuring Newley and Quayle were available while this one was. Well, it seems strange to blame this recording for that. The people at JAY weren't keeping the other ones from being released.

In any case, the Broadway recording with Newley and Quayle is again available. I'm glad to have both.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks magic.......2000-02-12

Newley was the magic. At the Broadway performance we saw in '63 and in the Album with Anna Quayle there was fresh energy and not a false moment. It's not entirely fair to compare but in comparison, this is stale and leaden...like the movie made of Stop The World (without Newley).

What else we might have written was already said exactly as we would have said it by Jeff Dunn in his review.

We gave three stars because it is still Newley and Bricusse and so it is still marvelous invention and worth a '...quick butcher's hook....'

2 out of 5 stars NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSION, BUT BETTER THAN NOTHING.......2000-02-04

IF ANYONE IS LOOKING FOR THE ORIGINAL BWAY RECORDING ON CD,PLEASE CONTACT ME AND I WILL MAKE A COPY FOR YOU. YOU CAN REACH ME AT brubin@bigplanet.com

2 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast (as suggested by headline).......2000-01-29

Sorry to say that this release does not measure up to the 10/12/1988 Polydor 820 261 distributed by UNI and now out of print. I must heartily agree with Mr. Dunn (above). Bring back the Original Broadway cast!

2 out of 5 stars BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST ALBUM.......2000-01-13

To start off with, I am an avid Anthony Newly fan and was really sadden by his death. I did get to see the original Broadway show. Unfortunatly, this new version does not match the original. Newlys way of putting over a song is missed. The songs seem to be sung much slower so the performers can sing the songs. It was Newlys show and when you listen to the original cast album, you can tell the difference. Lets hope they will reissue the origianl cast album again. It is an important Broadway musical and should be back on cd for the people who did not get a chance to get it when it was available. I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones. Did we really need another recording of Stop The World? I don't think so.

Starting out as Dan Fogelberg's backing band, Fool's Gold decided to strike out on their own with this eponymous disc. Full of high harmony & easy country rock tunes, Fool's Gold will warm the hearts of anyone who is a fan of such bands as the Eagles or Poco. Highlights include 'Rain, Oh Rain', 'Rollin' Fields & Meadows', & a cover of Fogelberg's own 'Old Tennessee'. Helped out by such friends as Glyn Johns, Glenn Frey, & Joe Walsh along the way, Fool's Gold has just the right blend of country & rock to entice listeners to enjoy this fine album. BMG/Japan.

    5 out of 5 stars Far Out!! Fool's Gold!.......2004-01-24

I never thought I'd get to here this again other than on my ancient and scuffed LP. What a treat! This is the true Southern California country/rock sound at it's best--the roots of what they call 'Alt-Country' now, if you will. I highly recommend this to new fans of the alt/country or Tempe, AZ scenes and especially to fans of the old bands like the Eagles, Burrito's and Poco. Kudos to those responsible for putting this out on CD! Any chance of getting the Henry Paul Band now?

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous.....!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-10-15

I am so EXICITED this is FINALLY on CD!!!!!....I listened to this back in the 70's and still have it on vinyl!!! I had it on cassette, but wore it out!!! and recorded it a hundred times on cassette..... This is a fantastic array of good ole music from the 70s. Folgerberg/Poco//Eagles/Sutherland bros/ influenced, it is a fine piece of work!!!!! The song "Comin Out of Hiding" is incredible, needless to say, "Back in Tennesee". I can't fairly pick one from the other....All of these cuts are great! You don't find any cd with every song a goldmine...... no matter how old you are... get this CD... it's worth every penny.. then just sit back and listen......

5 out of 5 stars You can go home again!!.......2001-01-16

Fools Gold had slipped from my memory banks for years, but came rushing back in a hurry. Knowing their association with Fogelberg got me interested back in the mid 70's, and after listening to this debut album I was hooked. The songwriting and energy are right there, but its the harmonies that linger long after the music is over. My vinyl copy has long since disappeared, so getting this on CD is a dream come true. For anyone who likes the Byrds and Poco, pick this up. You won't be disappointed. I hope Mr. Lucky, their 2nd and I believe final record, will follow shortly. It's even better!!

5 out of 5 stars FOOLS GOLD IS GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-08-10

Fools Gold was as good as great bands like Poco but never got the backing from their lable...The only help they got was from being Dan Fogelbergs backup group and touring and opening up for his shows. The songs are great and so is the sound. If you like this cd you will love their second album Mr. Lucky..the song Captain is their best. Thanks for putting this one on cd-- now they need to put Mr. Lucky on cd.

    4 out of 5 stars HAPPY MEMORIES.......2000-07-12

I WAS ALSO LEARY OF THE SOUND QUALITY ON THE CD BUT WAS PLEASNTLY SURPRISED.IT IS SO GOOD TO HEAR FOOLS GOLD AGAIN, EASILY ONE OF THE BEST COUNTRY ROCK BANDS THAT EVER RECORDED. I NOW HAVE ONE PROBLEM, WHERE AND WHEN CAN I GET THEIR SECOND ALBUM ON CD? PLEASE HELP.
