Desiderata - a blast from the past.......2006-08-20

I remember this track from the early seventies - mainly because mum had a big poster on the wall.... and we'd hear it every now and again on the radio. Thought provoking - can never be copied.

Only the one track, Desiderata, appeals now tho' - perhaps age is allowing cynicism to creep in.
I have rated the track 4 stars though...... great mate, not 'arf.

Two entirely different musical forms both well performed.......2002-12-15

Carissimi is predominantly known for his oratorios. The performance of his mass is beatifully done by Consortium Carissimi which consists of three male voice (two tenors and bass) as well as a basso continuo. This elegantly simple mass brougt tears to my eyes on many occasions. The addition of the instrument adds a level of poignancy to the mass which is most apparent in the Agnue Dei.
The motets included have a more song-like quality than other motets I have heard, aven though the texts are religious. They are very different from the mass yet equally beatiful.
Naxos has provided a detailed summary of Carissimi and his times which elucidate the listening.
As someone who has no musical education and who has not litened to other versions of the works, my comments are limited to what I exepience as a listener.
I do plan to buy the other Naxos Carissimi disc.

The poetic lyrics contained within this CD are sure to move everyone. As many of you may know, DESIDERATA is a classic that never seems to lose its appeal. Personally, I love listening to it in Spanish. For all those of Spanish-speaking origin, and those who are fortunate enough to know the language, I highly recommend this CD for its contents, and for the formidable performance of Arturo Benavides. He is sure to touch you in a most impressive and lasting way. Happy listening!

3rd on my best of 2006 list.......2007-03-16

Yet another band that refuses to be classified, Madder Mortem is a female fronted group from Norway with the most kick butt female singer in metal today, Agnete Kirkevaag.

Agnete is an alto with a vocal range that cannot belong to anyone who is a mere mortal. Sometimes compared to Grace Slick stylistically, Agnete's ability, range and power surpass the justification for comparison. Unlike the fluffy sopranos present in so many orchestral and gothic metal outfits, Agnete testifies against type with pure raw power, and she does it with style and terrific pitch.

I first fell in love with their 2003 album "Deadlands", and when I initially gave "Desiderata" a spin I didn't like it quite as well. As is usual with my favorite albums however, this one grew on me to such an extent that I now have to say I like it even better than the last one. So much so, that it now has the number 3 spot on my list.

The album begins with the pounding post punk statement "My Name is Silence", which finds Agnete belting it out to some beautiful downtuned and dissonant guitar slams. The chorus of this song has an almost sing-along quality, except for the fact that Agnete jumps an octave in the middle of a line. Leaves us mortals with our "normal" vocal chords feeling very insufficient. She softens it up a bit in the second song "Evasions" a builder that ends with a crashing climax. Agnete illustrates that she is comfortable with pianissimo as well, and demonstrates a beautiful soft alto in "Distopia", dark and moody "Cold Stone", death/goth styled "M for Malice", darkwave ballad "The Flood to Come" as dark guitar rhythms chug away in the background. There are some songs on this album here that riff in an almost nu-metal headbanger style. A good example of this is the intro to the seventh track "Changeling". Fortunately, this is only a small part of the whole, which finds a very eclectic Opeth-like blending of styles within the composition. None of the songs on the album really go where you expect, taking strange twists and turns through dark alleys and unexplored passages. The albums final track "Hangman" is a bluesy waltz that builds into a dissonant cacophony of pounding guitars, with probably the most raw and emotional vocal performance to be found this year, by male OR female vocalist.

The overall sound is dark, atmospheric, gothic, mysterious. The musicians mesh perfectly with each other. The guitars and bass blend beautifully with the sensitively played drums. The Drummer deserves special props for handling transitions and the changing dynamics with such delicacy. Of all the female fronted bands in metal, or even in popular music, this one deserves so much more recognition.

Desiderata.......2007-01-07

Madder Mortem were, at one point, a gothic metal band with doomy tendencies... and a damn good one. While some semblance of that might still be found on Desiderata if one were to listen hard enough, the band has - for better or worse - sacrificed the whole idea in lieu of a faster, heavier, and more metallic deal. Fortunately, this has mostly worked out in their favor. Massive emphasis has been placed on mood shifts and dynamics, and the songwriting has taken a turn to the progressive end of the spectrum, making for a considerably diverse and satisfying listen.

For those thinking that Madder Mortem have turned to writing 20 minute songs with extended solo jams and synthesizer wars - fear not. Though the presentation has become somewhat more upbeat and the arrangements have gotten more complex, the atmosphere remains quite dark and the band doesn't rely on any kind of instrumental wizardry to impress the listener so much as they employ driving riffs, pounding drums, prominent bass lines, and a magnificent sense of pathos to simply crush the listener underneath waves of pure energy. That isn't to say that there's nothing impressive from an instrumental standpoint here - the playing is quite accomplished, and the drums especially deserve special mention. The guy knows how to keep a song flowing while maintaining an expansive sense of dynamics and changing up the rhythmic backbone enough to keep the mood from stagnating. The guitars are riff-heavy, and the riffs are deep, brooding, and focus more on impact than speed. The production complements all of this incredibly well - the sound is bottom-heavy, warm, and all instruments have plenty of room to breathe.

Stylistically, the album takes various twists and turns between songs, and often within songs... it's rare that the listener ends in quite the same place where he began. The almost punk'ish opener "My Name is Silence"; the vocal-centric and haunting "Dystopia"; the gloomy, at times nightmarish, at times dreamy instability of "Changeling"; the atmospheric darkwave feel of "Cold Stone" which transforms halfway through into a hypnotic tribal anthem; or the rather epic feel of the title track... it's a ride.

Of particular note are the vocals of Agnete Kirkevaag. While she isn't quite endowed with angelic chords the likes of, say, Floor Jansen, she more than makes up for it with sheer emotional power and empathy. Her whispers instill fear and doubt, her screams reek of lunacy, and her soft singing is warm and welcoming. There are several moments where her voice seems to hit a breaking point, and it is these moments that add the most power to the music. More specifically, her performance on the closing track "Hangman", where the listener is given a taste of what's probably one of the most sincere explosions of unbridled emotion I've ever heard out of a vocalist. Intense moment, indeed.

This definitely is not an album to be missed for those who enjoy female-fronted metal.

Forget anything else you know.......2006-05-25

I used to listen to Lacuna Coil religiously, and thought they they were the premeire goth female-fronted band out there...not even close. Do yourself a favor, and pick up Madder Mortems "Deadlands" album, listen to it 200 times until nothing else comapres, then do yourself the favor of picking up "Desiderta" They both make every other female fronted/doom metal band sound like a joke, and will only ruin the expreience when listening to any other metal album. In a class of their own, ladies and gentleman...BUY MADDER MORTEM!!!!

Perfect...absolutely perfect!.......2007-04-04

I'm not sure why some of the reviewers write that this CD is not like the original. I still have my album (white jacket, poster and everything) and a turntable on which to play it...this CD sounds EXACTLY like the original...minus the few wear and tear sounds of my 30 something year old album.

I was excited to finally find a CD version so I could add it to my MP3 player.

I always found this was one of those recordings (talking about the entire set of tracks) that you should listen to alone and in a quiet place. Since it's primarily a recitation of poems and such; having others around talking really becomes annoying.

Listening brings a flood of memories! Of all the tracks Beauty and Happiness are my least favorite...they're just too...too sweet. I didn't care for them originally, and my opinion hasn't changed.

I agree with the reviewers who say that this is not the voice recording that we remember from the early 70s. The voice that I remember was lower and more soothing than what I heard on this recording. The back ground music seems more distracting than I remember as well. Since I was looking forward to the old sound, I was disappointed,

... and it is awesome! It was great hearing these familiar lyrics from my childhood. My intent is to pass them on to my only child. My hope is that she will use these kind and insightful words to help mould her life.

Very Inspiring.......2004-03-03

I first heard this song in Germany back in 1983 when I was 17 and visiting there. The woman I was staying with had it and as I played it she told me that this song stopped her from committing suicide. That stayed with me always. Many years later I was working at a Women's Shelter and saw the words to Desiderata hanging on my Supervisor's bulletin board in her office. It all came back to me. I just had to get the song again. This is a beautiful song and I am now going to give a copy to my sister in law who is having some real problems. Hopfully it can inspire her, like it did the woman in Germany I stayed with.....

Contrary to what some have posted, this is the original recording of Desiderata by the original artist, Les Crane. If you'll do a little digging on the web, you'll find that Les won a grammy for this song in 1971 for Best Spoken Word Recording. Excellent rendition. Worth every penny.

McCreesh does Palestrina.......2006-09-26

This is one the very best Gabrieli consort discs and almost impossible to get hold of. If you get an opportunity grab it and make a back up. The Palestrina on the disc is mind-blowing. A totally McCreeshian take on a usually serenely, gently sung composer. The performance is polar opposite to for example, the sublime Pro Cantione Antiqua discs. In particular the Kyrie, Gloria and Credo are breathtaking, the rest of the mass, still brilliant is less impressive. McCreesh succeeds in making Palestrina not just beautiful, but exciting. The plainchant on the disc is of the very best sort that McCreesh can produce, with perfect acoustics. The Victoria motets are truly magnificent and compete with Palestrina's mass. The canzone are not particularly brilliant, nor are the motets at the end of the mass. Well worth going to alot of trouble to get.

Next to the Praetorius Mass (OUTSTANDING recording...), this is my favorite recording by McCreesh and the Gabrielis (I have 10 or so of their recordings). As this recording is no longer produced (deleted from dg's catalog, in fact - a REAL shame), i paid through the nose to get it, but it was worth it. This performance is completely addictive from the first listening: very fluid, warm, smooth, and extremely well balanced. Aside from the very beautiful ordinaries of the mass, there are several other noteworthy pieces. The offertory and communion motets by Victoria almost steal the entire show. Not even Hyperion's 7 discs of Victoria have the wonderful Quem Vidistes Pastores: a beautiful gem that will help you wear out your | < < button. The opening motet has some very exquisite and exotic harmony that is also not to be missed. The falsetto does tend to stick out a bit towards the end of it, but certainly doesn't cast a shadow on this or any of the other pieces. Although it is definitely within the mainstream work of this outfit, this reconstruction seems to have a rather unique aura compared with their other recordings. If you can find this disc, get it. guaranteed enjoyment.
