Long time compatriots and bandmates David Crosby and Graham Nash have joined forces yet again to release the oddly named Crosby/Nash 28 years after their last studio effort, Whistling Down the Wire. This double-disc is certainly worth the wait, despite the fact that most of the 20 songs are profoundly introspective and tinged with an elegant melancholy and sense of regret for an idealized past. To their credit, after four decades, Crosby and Nash are still in perfect voice, and remain graceful foils for one another, although some of the songs don't do justice to their prodigious talents. A handful are without focus and seem to be impressions in search of a hook, save the lovely, ethereal "Lay Me Down" (penned by Crosby's son, James Raymond) and the rather esoteric '60s throwback "Luck Dragon," with its elegant space jam ending. Nash's contributions are a bit more prosaic, and seem to be autobiographical ruminations about middle age, except the chilling environmental cautionary tale, "Don't Dig Here" and haunting post-9/11 song, "Half Your Angels." But the disc really comes alive when the duo shows their old ire, "They Want It All," a clear potshot at corporate greed and politics, and a wrenching read of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." --Jaan Uhelszki

Less than a year after the release of CSN's groundbreaking debut, the group returned with Stephen Stills's former Buffalo Springfield cohort/rival Neil Young augmenting the threesome. The result is a less concentrated but more kinetic creation; Young swims through the celestial harmonies of rock's best barbershop trio like a fly in consommé. While somewhat dated ("Almost Cut My Hair"? Wait a while, David, it'll fall out), Deju Vu is teeming with early '70s FM staples, including "Helpless," "Teach Your Children," and "Our House." --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
Deja Vu........ Have I written this before?????????.......2007-06-04
I liken this group to a band of ex-patriot renegades (see cover) who, for whatever what reason, saw fit to escape former situations to create a new creative band. How or why they got together is anyone's guess. But it works in a more than substantial way and the vocals and music are more than a snug fit like pieces of a puzzle.
The songs here have a tendency to embed themselves into self-serving memory for some reason. Perhaps it's the artists; perhaps it's the songs, perhaps it's the harmonies, perhaps it's the production. Then again, maybe, perhaps it's everything.
Even in the slower and more somber tunes, there is something here that awakens you - leads you on to some type of discovery. Whether it be inner or outer is your own choice. But realization of yourself and your world is a never ending process. Maybe we would all be better in Wyoming at a simpler, less complicated time. But, here we are. And we have no choice except to learn and evolve - or else, in the next life, this one will be the Deja Vu.
We begin with "Carry On" which borrows lyrics from Still's "Questions" that was on the last Buffalo Springfield album. On this he expands into a galloped beat with pronounced ensemble singing. Also a change in tempo. In a sense, the message is pronounced (as later in the Joni Mitchell song "Woodstock") that life is for learning. A call to carry on and learn.
The seemingly simple country slide guitar ode of Nash's "Teach Your Children" carries with it the underlying motif of understanding by shifting your perspective. In this case, older and younger generations. It's easy to discount others in which there is no reward. Better yet to take the effort to truly "see". The blessings are well worth the chance.
Crosby's "Almost Cut My Hair" with it's lazy walk riff poses questions within the self. Justifying inner decisions as opposed to whatever out there wants to decide for you. An amazing stream-of-conciousness tune. Or maybe drugs. With Crosby it's always a flip of the coin. What is next is one of the most glorious tunes on the album. "Helpless" conveys the awe and magnitude of the Canadian countryside that Neil knows. Nature in itself is a force beyond human comprhension or control, and in this we are all helpless.
"Woodstock" rocks righteously. And it is a call of a generation. It is also a song of moving forward with a clensing. We have all fallen- but we are golden and have to get ourselves back to the garden. Again- a moving on.
"Deja Vu", with Crosby's outerworldly guitar chords and ethereal meters beckon further examination of the world. "Do you know? Don't you wonder". The construction on this song never ceases to amaze your favorite Seer. Maybe I could have written this in a former life. O.K. - I won't go there.
"Our House" is Nash's ode to domestic bliss. Nothing exceptional but oh so addictive. That tune is just so incredibly pleasant. This must be what the afterworld is like! "4 + 20" finds Still's still aching about a lost love. Simple but effective acoustic guitar on this. Still, the dismay and depression of heartache is one of the most deeply confessional tunes I've heard. The ways of the world are sometimes wicked and cruel. Sometimes we create those ways.
Again, Neil Young shines bright with the trilogy of "Country Girl". Amazing, lush, and inventive changes in structure. This could not have been an easy tune to pull off. But, with musicians this talented anything is possible. "Too late to keep the change, too late to pay". Neil always throws these dilemmas in his tunes (see my review on "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere). Neil is consummate conveyor of enigmas within the soul. His own as well as others. Brilliant.
"Everybody I Love You" closes out this rock classic. A call to open up and let love through - even to one's self. Your "heart is an anchor" and "you expect for me to love you when you hate yourself my friend". With C,S,N & Y somehow, underneath it all, is a call to freedom and movement towards the dawn- the dawn of realization.
Well - that's it. I made you suffer through another review. Did you like it or did you need novacaine? I'm leaving Wyoming now. Being pelted with pinecones is not Metamorpho's cup of tea. No.
If you like wonderous harmonies, creative effort, and a classic from a magical bygone age - this is definitely a treat and essential to any rock collection.

Shows What We've Lost and What They've Lost.......2007-04-26
Deja Vu also shows what CSN (and sometimes Y) ultimately have lost. Sadly, after this pinnacle of achievement, except for occasional flourishes of good songwriting and performance, Crosby, Stills, & Nash would rarely recapture the beauty of this album or its predecessor. The exception has of course been Young, who somehow has managed to keep it all together through the years. And except for Stills' magnificent opus, Manassas (1), and C&N's Wind On the Water, I realize just how much drug addiction and delusions of grandeur have drained the talent from these once brilliant artists. Fortunately, we still have the time capsules created by Buffalo Springfield, CSN, Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, The Stones, and The Beatles to transport us back to the musical renaissance of 1967--1972.
Musical Portrait of a Generation.......2007-04-07
Admittedly, my vinyl copy of Deja Vu had been gathering dust for years as I have so much other music I had nearly forgotten CSNY. But recently, I saw this on sale at a bargain price in Costco and snapped it up after remembering how much I used to enjoy it as a kid. Well, I tell you, one listen brings the old days back to life. The industry reviewer says that songs like Almost Cut My Hair are dated, but I say they still sound as good today as when I first heard them.
Though the entire album is highly enjoyable, my favorites are: the stirring Carry On, the country-rock Teach Your Children, the anthemic Almost Cut My Hair, the evocative Our House, the plaintive 4 + 20, and the glorious Country Girl. Everytime I put this on, visions of old times and places flash though my mind.
Note that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and some other organization have chosen Deja Vu as one of 200 albums that should be in everyone's collection. I've seen that list and my stomach churns as I read it. But I was pleased to note that the compilers got roughly one out of ten right and this album is definitely one of those few. Obviously, if you are checking this CD out on the listings here you must have some familiarity with it. So if you have not gotten this remastered version of Deja Vu yet, the time to do so is now. You'll never be sorry you did.

When David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash created this pop super trio in 1968 after their splits from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies, respectively, it would have been a pipedream that a hits package released 37 years later would sound as eternal and essential as this one. The 19 songs straddle the four-album, landscape-altered timeframe between 1969's post-Woodstock debut Crosby, Stills & Nash and 1982's Daylight Again, which helped inaugurate the MTV era. Unbalanced sequencing--which randomly bounces 12 years ahead and five years back--is rescued by the superb harmonies, unique songwriting and divergent personalities of the three members. With politics and culture always at the forefront, Stills bookends the band's trademark canon with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Southern Cross," Nash incorporates Eastern influences to "Marrakesh Express" and folk timber to "Just a Song Before I Go" and "Teach Your Children," and the ever-capricious Crosby leads the way lyrically with the lingering "Delta" to the Robert Kennedy tribute "Long Time Gone." Sure, the collection is missing any songs by ("Ohio") or contributions from ("Woodstock") the fourth name on the marquee (Neil Young). Here's hoping that's for another Greatest Hits. --Scott HolterAlbum Description
One of the most enduring musical partnerships of our time, Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) are beloved worldwide for their peerless three-part harmonies, inspired songwriting, and brilliant musicianship. Rightfully claiming a singular place among the artistically and culturally influential acts of the original Woodstock era, CSN has been called "the voice of an entire generation."Customer Reviews:

This compilation is a bit of a disordered mosaic, but who cares? CSN&Y are at their best with the haunting sounds of 'Helplessly Hoping':
'Wordlessly watching he waits by the window
And wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams he worries
Did he hear a good-bye, or even
Hello'
Assonance helps itself to tonalities that no other quartet of male human beings could replicate.
It is the spareness of this music that strikes one in retrospect. Ornamentation is absent. They don't do all that they could with their voices. They simply do enough to engage the soul and, of course, the memory.
'Love isn't lying, it's
Loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on
Hello'
One of CSN&Y's most winsome tunes is the odd tale of happiness that makes it into the canonical memory, an instrument much more receptive to angst, loss, and woe. But who can forget:
'I'll light the fire
You place the flowers in the vase
That you bought today
Staring at the fire
For hours and hours
While I listen to you
Play your love songs
All night long for me
Only for me ...
Our house is a very, very fine house
With two cats in the yard
Life used to be so hard
Now everything is easy
'Cause of you'
These guys must have known a tune like this couldn't possibly sell, would instantly be dismissed as musical cotton candy, and would leave their reputation as a thoughtful band besmirched.
Yet they released it anyway, and it went and became permanently hummable.
Quite the contrary the enigmatic fight-or-flight story sketched out in 'Southern Cross'. It was standing in South Africa's Krüger Park, looking up at the Southern Cross (for the first time) that brought me back 'round to the iTunes Music Store, to downloading this album, and now to the re-hearing of these almost-eschatological, almost dissolute words:
'... But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.
Think about how many times I have fallen.
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
looking' for that woman-girl
Who knows love can endure.
And you know it will ...
So we cheated and we lied and we tested.
And we never faijled to fail; it was the easiest thing to do.
You will survive being bested.
Somebody fine will come along
Make me forget about loving you
In the Southern Cross.'
Is this prediction or wish, certainty or the desperation of a jilted lover hoping he won't forever live with this ache? CSN&Y aren't telling.
If the band was willing to risk whimsiness, they also took a chance on the side of sentimentalism, with equally good results. Witness the quintessentially benign 'Teach Your Children':
'Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
And you, of tender years,
Can't know
The fears your elders grew by,
And so please help them
With your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well
Their children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked
The one you'll know by.'
One of the greatest uses of the tenor range by CSN&Y is undoubtedly 'Just a Song Before I Go', arguably their best song:
'Just a song before I go,
To whom it may concern ...
She helped me with my suitcase,
She stands before my eyes.
Driving me to the airport
And to the friendly skies.
Going through security
I held her for so long.
She finally looked at me in love,
And she was gone.'
Who knew where this song was going? Tragedy or triumphant? Love or irreversible separation?
Once again, CSN&Y are at their best when at their most enigmatic. The song ends:
'Just a song before I go,
A lesson to be learned.
Travelling twice the speed of sound
It's easy to get burned.'
What happened? Silence, then a new track.
Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young were that rare phenomenon: an assemblage of great voices that together created a unique sound. I don't mean 'unique' as in 'cool', but in its proper sense : 'one of a kind'. One can venture influences upon CSN&Y from their foreground and one can, in retrospect, point to a number of artists who have picked up one or two of their characteristics. But there has been no CSN&Y tradition and - heaven be thanked - no recorded CSN&Y Impersonator conventions.
One has to look far afield to find a band that has imbibed their spirit: to Matchbox Twenty, for example. Admittedly, the sound is altogether different. How could it be otherwise, given the musical water that has passed under the bridge between these two fine acts?
Yet the poignance, the memory, the longing, and the predilection for harmony over, say, an imitable voice like the Stone's Jagger is a thin line that might run from CSN&Y to MT without doing violence to the integrity of either one.
Listen to them back-to-back and see whether you agree. For that, you'll need to pick up CSN (and Young's) Greatest Hits. That'll be a smart decision on its own.

As much as any record, CSN's 1969 debut ushered in the early '70s singer-songwriter boom. Yes, this was a group, but it was one made up of three coequal composer/vocalists, each with a heady resume--Crosby an ex- Byrd, Stills in Buffalo Springfield, and Nash a former member of the Hollies. Each supplied distinctive material and contributed to CSN's trademark harmonies. The addition of Neil Young made the supergroup an edgier outfit. There's a purity to the original trio recording, however, that would never be recaptured. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

THE TRUE SPIRIT OF ROCK N' ROLL AND WOODSTOCK 1969........2007-04-14
CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for delivering some of Rock's most sacred anthem songs. This legendary band would also be responsible for writing some of the most memorable anthem songs defining the true spirit of the very first Woodstock Festival held in 1969. The band members were no strangers to Rock n' Roll. David Crosby would formally be from the band THE BYRDS, Stephen Stills would formally be from the band BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD and the British musician Graham Nash would formally be from the band THE HOLLIES. Put these three key elements together and you have pure genius. When these three music giants got together and went into the recording studio and laid down the tracks for this legendary album, the band would record something very special. After a certain period of time, the band would evolve from the recording studio with this completed album and hand it into Atlantic Records. The result would be the self-titled debut album by CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH. In my opinion, "CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH" is one of the greatest albums as well as acoustic albums ever recorded. It is also my opinion that this legendary self-titled debut album would be a true testament of three extremely talented young masterminds and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.
It is now time for me to let the music of CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking. This legendary self-titled debut album begins with the forever famous CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH trademark acoustic masterpiece song "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," the incredible harmonizing "Marrakesh Express," the slow and mysterious acoustic number "Guinnevere," the slow and beautifully harmonized song "You Don't Have To Cry," the breathtaking Rocker "Pre-Road Downs," the slow and fantastic Rocker "Wooden Ships," the slow and beautiful acoustic song "Lady Of The Island," the slow and beautiful harmonizing number "Helplessly Hoping," the slow blistering harmonizing Rocker "Long Time Gone" and the slow beautiful uplifting song "49 Bye-Byes." May I also add that CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH delivered some of the greatest acoustic guitar sounds ever. The three also contributed some of the greatest harmonizing sounds in Rock history.
Overall, this is one great legendary album worth seeking further research into and checking out especially if you are a hardcore diehard CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH fan or a devout music collector. As for the curious newcomers or new beginner's that are not familiar with the sound and music of CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH, what better way to begin their CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH collection by purchasing this band's first album.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece self-titled debut album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary masterpiece album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great album that no hardcore music fan or a devout music collector would want to be without. Buy this album, you'll be glad that you did. You can purchase all of CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH'S albums through Amazon com or Borders.
In closing, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH would be on top of the world following the release of their self-titled debut album. CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH would also release many more great albums to highly critical acclaim. However, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH would also have their fair share of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their long career. Depite all of their tribulations, CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH will forever leave their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you David, Stephen and Graham. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH FOREVER. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Battle of the bands makes for fine music .......2007-04-10
CSN released their debut in the spring of 1969, just in time to fly up the charts before Woodstock. One of the special features about this recording is the stamp each artist places on his work, while allowing the other two to join in for a unique sum that's more than it's parts. Taken apart these men are talented, but something is missing after hearing them together.
Crosby is the rebel, Stills the perfectionist and Nash the heartbeat. "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", a classic rock staple/tribute to Judy Collins, opens the album. Stills makes it his by trailing off into speaking Spanish at the end, leaving Crosby and Nash to provide the pretty melodies. Graham Nash's " Marrakesh Express" is a hold-over from his days in The Hollies, but fits in perfectly here. It rolls along like a train, giving the listener a sense of being high on travel and in love.
Crosby gets in a word with " Guinevere", a beautiful ballad written as a composite of Joni and another girlfriend. One of the greatest compliments a song can receive is providing inspiration for another great song; "Wooden Ships" gave Jackson Browne the desire to respond in his superior work " For Everyman". I must admit that " Wooden Ships" sounded like a song dedicated to Holocaust survivors to me when I first heard it, and in some ways I found it more poignant in that vein than it's real meaning, thoughts from refugees in a nuclear stand-off.
" Lady of the Island" is another highlight; wouldn't all ladies like to have a Graham Nash in her life? " Helplessly Hoping" is another timeless classic. In fact, not a one of these songs begs to be removed. They all come together to make a very satisfying experience, especially on a summer day. This is a fantastic summer album.
A classic!.......2007-03-31
While this was a great release, it has been superceded by a newer edition of the CD with bonus tracks. I would recommend that you pass on this edition and pick-up the newer edition with the bonus material.

This is one of those albums where you'll want to cherry-pick favorites. Recorded live when the supergroup was at its commercial zenith, it's sloppy in spots where precision is called for. And the hyperbolic counterculture rants sound a bit silly these days (Bellows Stills: "Jesus Christ was the first nonviolent revolutionary! Ah, dig it, dig it!"). On the other hand, the electric jams are enlivened by some charged guitar skirmishes between Stills and Young. Those who owned the original 2-record set will be pleased by the additional Graham Nash song ("King Midas in Reverse") and Young's acoustic "The Loner"/"Cinnamon Girl"/"Down by the River" medley. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

It's tempting to follow the post-Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young career of Neil Young and underestimate this early band as a lighter, commercial diversion. But their fourth album, a concise retrospective of highlights, remains a sweeping '60s document, full of pastoral optimism and the virtues of (even today) spectacular-sounding harmonies. These songs continue to dominate AOR radio, and the best--the searing "Ohio" (written after the Kent State massacre), the utopian "Woodstock," and the ominous, graceful "Wooden Ships," the band's best performance--have an artful, mystical sweetness. --Roy Francis KastenCustomer Reviews:

Wooden Ships shows great musicianship. Perhaps the broader meaning is lost in the 60s, but it is still great to listen to.
Teach Your Children is filled with 60s moralizing - or is it a modern commentatry that No Child Left Behind isn't enough?
Ohio, a song of the Kent State massacre, shares an anti-authority and anti-big government message that has been gaining steam in recent years.
Woodstock, about the iconic festival they attended (and ironically written by Joni Mitchell who didn't attend) could also be seen as surviving in modern times. At least as long as the reunion shows keep going every five years there.
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, one of their most famous anthems, also survives the test of time.
What a great album - enjoy!

On this album, Crosby & Nash prove that they can make a wonderful album without Stills and Young. Nash's poppier numbers perfectly counterbalance Crosby's more cerebral trips. The harmonies are solid as a rock, and the two often overdub themselves numerous times to produce a vocal blend that just might be tighter than CS&N. Instrumental backing by various members of the Grateful Dead is complementary but never flashy or intrusive.
It's arguable that this album isn't as varied as Deja Vu, but it highlights Crosby and Nash at their respective strengths. While it might be difficult to find on CD, this album is well worth seeking out for fans of CS&N and CSN&Y.

Of course, the guys were hardly idle in the meantime. CSNY did tour in 1974. Stephen Stills seems to have barely slept, making brilliant music as a solo artist in addition to putting together the band Manassas for live concerts and two albums; plus, he teamed up with Neil for the 1976 Stills-Young album "Long May You Run". David Crosby & Graham Nash continued to record and tour together, making fantastic music as a duo.
So, although "CSN" was only the second bonafide Crosby, Stills & Nash album up to this point, there was no doubt at all of the brilliance of each individual member. And this album, deservedly a huge hit, just proves it even further.
The album opener "Shadow Captain" has a suitably epic feel with spellbinding harmonies. "Anything At All" has Crosby's characteristic dreamy resignation to it, and in typical Crosby fashion, it really gets under your skin and moves you. The supremely tender "In My Dreams" is wonderful, with a brilliantly-realized punchy coda that Crosby claims was "a gift from Graham".
Speaking of Graham, he wrote the album's big hit with the short-and-sweet "Just A Song Before I Go" (which does feature some laughably aimless soloing from Stephen, as if he picked up the electric and did it all in one take having never heard the song before). Graham also offers the very pretty and yearning "Carried Away"; the eerily reflective "Cold Rain"; and a brilliant epic of his own with "Cathedral", a cautionary tale about the perils of organized religion.
Stills is consistently at his best here, which is saying a lot. "See The Changes" had been previously recorded in a CSNY version which would later appear on the CSN box set, but the version here is easily superior and more fully-realized. "Fair Game" is a deviously laidback Latin-flavored folk-rocker with lyrics that are a real riot, and Stephen rips out a hot acoustic solo toward the end. "Dark Star" is a tour-de-force, grooving along infectiously with a catchy opening riff, jazzy chord changes and electric piano work, more superb lyrics and vocal harmonies, and another great acoustic guitar solo from Stills. The orchestrated rocker "I Give You Give Blind", with its anthemic pleading choruses, brings the album to a rousing, soul-stirring conclusion.
I could go on and on, but really, the greatness of this album speaks for itself. Each member is demonstrated at their peak on this beautiful, must-have masterpiece.

Take it for what it is........2007-03-03
If you are a "casual fan" you'll want both "So Far" AND "The Greatest Hits" as there are no tracks with Neil Young performing with the group on "The Greatest Hits" selection and "So Far" is one of the few CDs with "Ohio" among the track list.
Most others would be satisfied with "Crosby, Stills, and Nash", "Deja Vu", "CSN" (The single CD), and this set for its' handful of rarities, unless you can't stand "alternate tracks".
If you want alternate/rare/unreleased tracks to go with your collection the "box" is a better choice.
If all you are looking for is the studio version of "Chicago/We Can Change the World" then it's this, the CSN "Box", or "The '60s: Original NBC Motion Picture Soundtrack" (which is OOP) as this song was only released as a single and currently appears nowhere else on CD.
If you are a completist, why are you still reading?
Good But Deceiving.......2007-01-21
If I were marketing a 2-CD best of I'd have dedicated Disc 1 to their first 2 albums - 1969's CS&N and 1970's CSN&Y. If you include all but "Pre-Road Downs", "Country Girl" and "Everybody I love You", the other 17 songs from these first 2 albums would easily fit onto 1 CD with several minutes left over. Throw in "Ohio", the shorter acoustic version of "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Find the Cost of Freedom" from the 4-Way Street album and you've got an incredible first CD.
The second CD can be devoted to the best from the other CSN albums, as well as some solo or duo efforts from the rest of their works. Musts would be "Just a Song Before I Go", "Dark Star", and "Cathedral" (from CS&N 1977), "Southern Cross", "Wasted On the Way", "Daylight Again" and "Delta" (from 1982's Daylight Again), "Got It Made" and "Soldiers of Peace" (from 1988's American Dream), and "Yours and Mine", "Haven't We Lost Enough", and "After the Dolphin" (from 1990's Live It Up). Live It Up was not a very good CD but these 3 songs are fantastic.
I'd add some of the better solo songs of each artist including Crosby's "Laughing", "Music Is Love", and "Tracks In The Dust", Still's "Change Partners", "Love the One You're With", and "Dear Mr. Fantasy", and Nash's "Chicago/Change the World", "Wild Tales", and "Immigration Man". I'd end it with the studio version of "Find the Cost of Freedom" that is on this current 2 CD set.
There you'd have an incredible 2-CD collection with NO ALTERNATE VERSIONS! Now why can't the marketers release something like this? It's a no-brainer and is what I suspect most who are intersted in this group would want. The new 1 CD greatest hits (2005) partially accomplishes this but this group is too great to have only a 1 CD compilation (I have the same gripe about Neil Young's new 1 CD greatest).
But I'm just the idiot customer that will now probably buy the remastered version of all the original albums so I can make my own 2-CD compilation. And that's just what they want me to do!!
This CD, with all the alternate versions, is interesting for those who might have all the originals, but is woefully inadequate if you only want one definitive 2-CD collection of their best. For that reason, I can't give it more than 3 stars.
((((BEWARE)))) NOT WHAT IT CLAIMS TO BE !.......2007-01-17
So now I'm stuck with an expensive double cd of demos songs I cannot stand because they don't sound like the versions I wanted, and because they remind me of how much I want to throw this at Graham Nash's head. Shame on you Nash!!!
Also, as another reviewer said, the sound quality is less than stellar. With music of this (potential) quality, you should not waste your money on inferior versions and inferior mastering.
A Great Compilation, But One Song Noticably Absent.......2006-08-18
Worst purchase I've made for CSN.......2005-08-07

"We weren't a band in the traditional sense...".......2007-03-24
Rarities include alternate mixes of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Guinivere," "Lee Shore," "Taken at All," "Homeward through the Haze" (the three previously mentioned feature CSN&Y), "See the Changes," "Simple Man," "Song with No Words," "As I Come of Age," "Soldiers of Peace," "Helplessly Hoping," "4 + 20," and "Almost Cut My Hair," never before released songs like the Beatles' "Blackbird," Steve Winwood's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going," live versions of Stills' "Black Queen" (he knew how to confront an exasperating audience), Nash's "Man In the Mirror" and "Wild Tales," "Dark Star" and "Got It Made" (that's about 1/3 of the boxset).
Of course, there's the highlights and quintessentials like "Find the Cost of Freedom," "Wasted on the Way," "Southern Cross," "Daylight Again," "Just a Song Before I Go," "Long Time Gone," "Wooden Ships," "Woodstock," "Helpless," Nash's "I Used to Be a King" and "Chicago" known for its exhortation "We can chaaange the wooorld!", Stills' "Old Times Good Times" (featuring a lively guitar solo by the late great Jimi Hendrix), "Thoroughfare Gap" and "Love the One You're With," "Woodstock," "Teach Your Children," "Shadow Captain," "Our House," the vitriolic "Ohio," Crosby's introspective "Tracks In the Dust" Crosby and Nash's "To the Last Whale," "Southbound Train," and "Immigration Man." One thing that has always been CSN's charm is that they weren't afraid to address both world issues and personal issues in their music, not to mention their gift for unigue harmonies. That's why I included Stephen Stills' quote as the title of this review.
I know you can't have everything that deserves inclusion, especially when you're limited to 4 discs, but it would've been nice to have Crosby and Nash's "Foolish Man" and "Out of the Darkness," Stephen Stills' "Go Back Home" (featuring Eric Clapton) and "We Are Not Helpless," "Fair Game" (from CSN) and the Stills/Young Band's "Long May You Run" (a minor quibble since this concluded Neil Young's Decade anthology).
All in all, if you love the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and can't afford all their most worthy releases, this would be a worthwhile investment.

My favorite Crosby - Nash album.......2007-04-09
Crosby & Nash -- what a pairing.......2006-12-20
You haven't truly lived if you haven't experienced the soaring beauty of Crosby's looping, aptly-titled "Bittersweet", and the dreamy contemplation of his "Homeward Through The Haze". Likewise, Nash's waltzing "Mama Lion" has striking lyrical imagery and an incredibly powerful buildup, with searingly emotional slide guitar from the extraordinary David Lindley. The album's ultimate 'forgotten gem', in that it doesn't appear on the "CSN" box set, and seems to have never been performed live by these guys (if it has, then just barely), is Nash's spellbindingly powerful and defiant anthem "Love Work Out"--Jackson Browne is credited for "other vocals" on it, and it features some of the richest vocal harmonies you could imagine, and the guitar interplay between Lindley and Danny Kortchmar is again extraordinary; CSN&Y should have seriously considered resurrecting this timeless inspirational gem for their 2006 Freedom of Speech tour, and hey, it'd have given Stills and Young a perfect vehicle for one of their guitar duels. Fittingly, Lindley brings out the fiddle, to excellent effect, for "Cowboy of Dreams", an excellent 3/4 country-western song that Nash claims to have written about Neil Young--heard today, the chorus sounds like a sly jab at those who are willing to go along with Young no matter what musical detour he chooses. "Naked In The Rain" is the first time Crosby and Nash shared a writing credit on a single song--it has a blissful, sun-kissed feel to it, with its blend of acoustic guitars, Craig Doerge's modulated electric piano, and Kortchmar's 'raining' electric guitar flourishes. Nash's protest number "Fieldworker" suffers from a somewhat lackluster execution, but it's still strong. Other great songs include Nash's angry "Take The Money And Run" and Crosby's dynamic, incredibly crafty "Low Down Payment". James Taylor is featured on at least two songs--Crosby's uplifting "Carry Me" (where he sings about a visit to his dying mother) and Nash's title song (a cautionary tale about the killing off of whales); it also sounds like Taylor playing acoustic guitar on "Bittersweet", although he is not credited (furthermore, no one at all is credited for playing acoustic guitar on it, although it's clearly audible, which just makes me all the more certain it's Taylor). Crosby's "Critical Mass", which serves as an intro to the title song, is magnificently arranged, bafflingly sophisticated, and beautiful--it's an a capella piece sung entirely by Crosby & Nash until the orchestra kicks in at the end; seemingly an outtake from Crosby's first solo album, it's kind of mind-blowing that Crosby's vocal parts had been recorded over 4 years before Nash got around to adding his.
As the liner notes for this 2000 reissue indicate, Crosby and Nash themselves hold this album in very high regard, and had incredibly good feelings about it as they were recording it. Indeed, with so much sumptuous, emotionally-wrenching material, "Wind on the Water" should be an indispensible part of any serious music lover's collection.
