5 out of 5 stars Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

    3 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2006-02-22

I'm giving this compilation 3 stars not because it isn't good...but because I feel that the String Quartet didn't take advantage of The Smiths catalogue. I was disappointed to see that some of my favorites were not covered. Maybe for volume 2?

Other than that...it was mostly beautiful. The cover of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" was particularly good. In fact, they managed to make it even more
melancholy than the original! I didn't even know that was possible.

    3 out of 5 stars mediocre.......2004-06-20

This CD sounds like a good idea, but on hearing it I was disappointed. The string quartet doesnt seem enough for a lot of these songs, maybe with a few more instruments in there it could work. It also seems, like many other string quartet tribute CDs, that these people playing the songs are not fans of the band, they don't seem to get into the music, or understand what makes it great. This CD is only nescassary for hardcore smiths fans that already have their albums.

    4 out of 5 stars Great album........2004-04-04

This is a wonderful album if you truly are a "Smiths" fan. The strings do an excellent job of masking as Morrissey's voice. However, even if you aren't a fan of The Smiths, the melodies are enjoyable. Johnny Marr will go down as a gifted guitarist/writer (as all his Guitar magazine accolades). People who aren't fans or are "Morrissey-jaded" wouldn't like this or probably anything else not Morrissey. Oh yeah, that's right I said it!!!

    3 out of 5 stars a little odd.......2003-10-05

Uh, this is wierd. It is like Morrissey and the Smiths covering Metalica. It just doesn't fit. Even so, for the hardcore Smiths fan it is worth the buy. Back To The Old HOuse was enjoyable, but I would suggest that you listen to the versions of other artists. And who chose the playlist? Crappy at best.

3 out of 5 stars Worked for The Cure tribute not for The Smiths.......2003-09-08

The String Quartet's tribute to The Smiths doesn't quite work as well as the tribute to The Cure. Maybe it's because the music from The Cure is much more colorful and has more layer and works wonderfully well with string instruments. However, without Morrisey's voice the string music doesn't work well.

Instead of a Sopranos-style album loaded with evocative songs, this HBO-movie soundtrack offers Dave Grusin's workmanlike score. What might be appropriate in the context of Norman Jewison's domestic drama is a listening experience with limited appeal. That is, fans of Grusin's work as a smooth-jazzer will probably enjoy--or at least find unobtrusive--the likes of "I Did an Experiment" and the guitar-and-vibes-heavy "I'm Happy for You." Not that the composer has no flair for reflecting the drama of a moment; "Tom Goes to the Den" is a masterful limning of that early turning point. Other snippets, including the title track, could fit into any tasteful suburban-based film. As for the disc's two vocal tracks, star Dennis Quaid's "I'm in the Mood for Love" is the musical equivalent of an actor's wandering accent, while Crowded House's 1986 "Don't Dream It's Over" brings the truest emotion to be found here. --Rickey Wright

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars the classic musical re-imagined as a chamber-piece.......2002-12-13

After its disastrous Broadway debut 12 years before, GIGI made it across the pond in a slightly-tweaked version and was a much more intimate in nature compared to its over-produced Broadway counterpart.

This production boasted three veritable legends of the European stage in Beryl Reid, Jean-Pierre Aumont and Sian Phillips. Joining them as the romantic Gigi and Gaston, respectively, were Amanda Waring and Geoffrey Burridge.

This recording is very different than the 1973 Broadway cast, in that the arrangements are more simplified and are thus more intimate and romantic. There is the addition of an Entr'acte that is quite beautiful, and the performances are uniformly excellent.

Amanda Waring proves to be the perfect innocent little Gigi, whose personal and emotional journey is far more believable here than on the original Broadway album.

All-in-all, a superb recording, and its such a shame that it is currently out of stock.

      4 out of 5 stars Gigi - A Worthwhile Treat.......2000-06-20

This London Cast is stunning! I've personally never seen them perform (duhh) but I have to admit they all have stunning voices... The Gigi is terrific (much better than the Broadway Cast Gigi) in "The Earth and Other Minor Things"... SHe has a beautiful voice that seems to float over the notes.

Andre Rieu gives listeners a Musical Party with this Gala Evening, recorded Live. This is my favorite, although with Andre you cannot go wrong.

Happy, Joyful, Fun. Get ready to clap, sing & dance.

Live in Dublin has better sound, but it comes in a close second to this double CD set.

I have them all. This is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars The best from Holland.......2002-12-29

This is probable the best CD made by Andre Rieu together with Fiesta.
Should be absolutely loved by Dutch people as it has quite a few typically Dutch songs perfectly executed Live.
It will make you sing along...even if you cannot keep a tune.

Fantastic Andre and Thanks a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Music for festivity !.......1999-11-30

This CD was recordered live. IT's a perfect cd for the "new year" although the sound is not perfect. But it's andré Rieu and we can always appreciate his music. If you like the Johann Strauss orchestra, you'll like the Maastricht Salon orchestra. In fact, some musicians who play in Johann Strauss, play in the Maastricht Salon orchestra. You will hear populars songs like "Old friend", "Stars and stips" "Amazing grace" and the theme song from "Popeye" etc... IT,s different from the other concert of André but it's beautiful. If you are a fan of André Rieu, you must have it.

5 out of 5 stars My wife and I were born in Maastricht now live in Melbourne.......1999-03-21

This concert is performed on "ashwednesday" after the carnival that is celebrated in that part of the Netherlands, they call that province Limburg, the people speak a certain dialect, part German, French, and Maastricht is one of the most beautifull cities in Western Europe, the reason for having "Euro"decision made in "the treaty of Maastricht" a few years ago. When we listen to this music,we shed a tear.

1 out of 5 stars Excellent music however recording engineer ruined the cd.......1999-01-06

Recording engineer Conny Peters has done it again. What could have been an excellect CD was turned into a less than satisfactory one. André's violin sounds like a cheap toy. Improper microphone placement, incorrect recording levels are but a few of the problems found with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars His first and perhaps strongest solo record.......2007-01-22

You've gotta love Ronnie Lane, at the very least as a great character in the history of rock music. After leaving the growing success of The Faces because he saw Rod Stewart's ego begin to get too big for the group's britches (Ronnie saw the same thing happening with Steve Mariott in The Small Faces a few years earlier), he started living in his mobile recording studio and making music that is sometimes the polar opposite of The Faces' very late-60's brand of loud bar rock. When you compare Ronnie to someone like Rod Stewart, who started out great only to care about his pocketbook a lot more than making good music, Ronnie becomes a spontaneous, organic, and music-driven artist--exactly what he was. Anymore For Anymore is the first of three top-notch solo studio albums in which Ronnie crafted his own brand of rock that included a pastiche of styles and instrumental combinations, backed by a sometimes large ensemble of mostly acoustic instruments.

As on most of The Faces' albums and his solo records, Ronnie and Slim Chance play a variety of covers and Ronnie's excellent original songs. Anymore For Anymore starts with "Careless Love," an excellent choice to set the tone for this album as well as Ronnie's solo career. It's a traditional song, arranged by Ronnie, featuring a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation. This microcosm perfectly represents the macrocosm of Ronnie's project--tradition, roots, blended with contemporary sounds and styles and his own creative flair. The song rocks and...folks...at the same time. The rest of this album basically follows this blueprint, except that it's Ronnie's original songs that really shine, bookended by fun, easygoing covers played by a group of people who are enjoying the ride.

"Don't You Cry for Me" and "Bye and Bye" are great examples of this--Ronnie effortlessly blends rock and traditional styles into his originals, backing with some great dobro and Ronnie's signature acoustic. He's in fine voice--one of my favorite things about Ronnie Lane's music is that he always sings his soul out, and there's no guile at all in his heartfelt delivery. With "Silk Stockings," Slim Chance throws in a saxophone, a regular staple of this album (less so on the later ones), "The Poacher," and "Anymore For Anymore" are instant classics, the first with its orchestral arrangement, and the second with its real pastoral feel (it was recorded outside at Ronnie's farm). The mellow, mandolin-tinged "Roll On Babe" is a subtle and moving song, and the album closes on "Chicken Wired," on of Slim Chance's hardest rocking tunes--they sound almost like The Faces.

The version of Anymore For Anymore that I managed to pick up used not only fills the rest of the first disc with alternate versions and bonus tracks, there's an entire second disc (Tin and Tambourine) featuring even more unreleased tracks and embryonic versions of later Slim Chance classics. It's a lot of music, though it's generally not cheap. All I can say is it's worth it to me--this is great music that deserves to be heard by a wider audience. I understand Ronnie's estate is working on re-releasing his catalog (hopefully soon). Until then, probably the cheapest introduction is the recent Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance, which combines most of his 2nd and 3rd albums on one disc. Once you're hooked on that great music, definitely check out Anymore For Anymore--it's a gem that might even outshine those two albums.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Heartfelt Recording.......2001-10-11

If you're reading this then you probably already know Ronnie Lane and his music. The shame is that songs as heartbreakingly beautiful as Roll on Babe and Anymore for Anymore haven't found a wider audience.

This recording has no shortage of sublime moments from the humor and impossibly uplifting Chicken Wired to the calming and soothing Roll on Babe. It's a true testament to an artist when you never tire of repeated listenings and this is the recording I would choose if I could only take one to an isolated island.

4 out of 5 stars Not So Fast..........2000-08-08

I couldn't agree more with every word written by svrana. Anymore For Anymore is a masterpiece in every sense of the word except for one thing...this is NOT the version of the disc that contains all those wonderful bonus tracks referred to in svrana's review. The version to buy was released in 1997 by the British label New Millennium Communications (Pilot 15)under license from the Lane Family Estate. It contains the seven bonus tracks and a superb booklet with intelligent notes and excellent photos, making it worth the extra cost. Keep on the look out for it and don't forget to pick up Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance and One For The Road (both on Edsel). These are brilliant albums that will warm your heart with every listen--be sure to spin them in the company of good friends. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars OOPS! [Addendum to My Previous Review].......2000-01-17

Just a brief correction to my preceding review...my comments regarding "The Poacher" should have been made about "Stone," which is actually on Ronnie's second Slim Chance album.

After the success of "How Come" (No. 11 in the UK), "The Poacher" was released as the follow-up single. Unlike most of Ronnie's simple arrangements, this song contained elaborate use of a string section. While it retained much of the folky feel of his signature sound, "The Poacher" did not better than No. 36--his final appearance on the charts.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Charming Music From a Gifted Artist.......2000-01-16

Ronnie Lane had to fight with the other Faces to get his songs on their albums and included in their concert set lists. The Faces were seen as an unabashed, hard-driving rock 'n' roll band; whereas Lane was at heart a traditional, music hall-inspired folkie. So in 1973 he left the Faces and formed Slim Chance. This band would eventually record three albums--this was the first and best.

Anymore for Anymore was recorded in conjucntion with plans to put together a travelling circus to be called the Passing Show, which was to feature musicians, clowns, jugglers, dancers and fire eaters. Their music fit the carnival atmosphere perfectly.

While the band could cook on songs like "Chicken Wired" (a more raucus version than that found on the Lane/Wood collaboration for the Mahoney's Last Stand soundtrack), a majority of the songs were more rooted in the folk tradition complete with fiddle, banjo and mandolin.

The album kicks off with "Careless Love" with its rollicking piano, followed by "Don't You Cry for Me"--a lovely Lane-penned love song. Other highlights include "Bye and Bye (Gonna See the King), "The Poacher" (one of Ronnie's signature songs which first appeared on The Faces' debut and on Pete Townshend's first solo LP), "Amelia Earhardt's Last Flight" and the title track "Anymore for Anymore."

The 7 bonus tracks feature remixes or alternate takes of five of the album's original songs, plus an acoustic version of the band's first single "How Come" and a Faces rehearsal version of "Anymore for Anymore" from 1972.

This is quite simply some of the loveliest music I've ever heard. If you liked the songs Ronnie wrote for the Faces, this album will win your heart and send you searching for his other albums. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
