Editorial Reviews

Oscar Quintero, JLB Forum, November 27, 2003
This release is awesome, it's FRESH PROGRESSIVE ROCK. This is my 2003 release of the year.

Product Description
The CD features 15 tracks, which are basically 14 songs, framed by Above the Grass Parts I and II.

The underlying idea was to achieve three goals:

Produce an album featuring James LaBrie in ways that no one has heard him before.

Combine the elements of progressive rock, film scoring and very modern production.

Use the work of Richard Dawkins (one of today's most influential neo-Darwinist writers) as a concept that connects all the pieces on the album .

1 out of 5 stars As another reviewer stated, cheesy and trite..........2006-12-16

Sorry, James, but it's just too bad that your name was used on this one. your voice sounds fine as usual, but as usual, this is a RIFF band with keyboards thrown in over the riffs. They should have gotten John Myung to play bass on this one.

5 out of 5 stars This is in response to Mr. W. Greenwood "PorterW"'s review. .......2006-04-21

First off, I'd stumbled upon this review when searching for the entire "Frameshift 1 - Unweaving the rainbow" tracklist. And I'm completely dumbfounded by some of the unbelievably ridiculous negative reviews posted by a few reviewers on this one. I saw this review by "PorterW" and with all due respect, I can confidently tell you that your review was perhaps driven either by pure ignorance or utmost hatred/jealousy of an extremely talented & humble singer as James Labrie is. I even got registered to Amazon.com just to respond to the mega-pseudo observations of "PorterW". Please try listening to some really "tough guys with bad attitude" singing,(or, am I permitted to describe it as pointless growling?) for Slayer, Pantera, Sepultura and a plethora of metal/death/black metal bands, if that's how you define "sublime good vocals" or "excellent singing"! Or try listening to Eminem, Pink, Kanye West, P. Diddy, Kid Rock and other "pseudo-superstars" of mainstream pop music!! Try singing a single verse of any of Dream Theater or James Labrie's tracks with exactly the same key used in singing the original, and only then even contemplate on criticizing the singer for his supposed "handicaps" or "flaws", as you quite wrongfully made, "PorterW"!

1 out of 5 stars Instrumental fans look elsewhere.......2005-12-06

I actually found this album embarassing to listen to. The compositions are so cheesy and trite. The earlier review that stated this CD has a touch of Jazz in it is misinformed about Jazz, this is not Jazzy, it's just crappy. The lyrics sound like they were written by an eight year old and the melodies remind me of 80's pop rock trying to make a comeback. This has nothing to do with how heavy/dark the music is (I like lighter stuff too), this is simply a dissapointment because the composotional value is so weak. If you are into bands like DT because of the more elaborate and intricate compsitions, avoid this CD at all costs.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-11-17

After reading many of the reviews on this album, it sounded like it would be good. I purchased it and listened to it, and it was not what I expected. While the music may be interesting, it should be noted that this is not the same genre as Dream Theater. I would classify this as Jazz, with a definite "Yes" feel to it. This was not hard and tight like Dream Theater. It was very mellow, which is fine, if that's what you were expecting. So, if you are looking for something soothing and mellow, this is very nice. If you are looking for something similar to Dream Theater, I recommend Symphony X or Kamelot.

1 out of 5 stars shocked . . ........2005-09-06

Im shocked La Brie would put his name on this unpleasant music.

4 out of 5 stars LaBrie as you never heard him!.......2004-04-09

LaBrie's performaces in Dream Theater is not extra ordinary at all (allthough I love their music). However, in Frameshift, he's amazing. In my words I'd call it art! It's a piece of well written music and a very good production and it is a must for all fans of progressive music. It is to me one of LaBrie's best work ever.
