Product Description
Groundbreaking album from this popular trend-setting New Wave trio. This Billboard Top 40 release features the hit singles: "Love On Your Side", "Lies", "Watching" & "We Are Detective", as well as classic album tracks such as "If You Were Here" (from the John Hughes' motion picture, Sixteen Candles). Not only has this long out of print CD been digitally remastered, but 4 bonus tracks are also included, some of which have never before been released on CD. Noted journalist Stephen "Spaz" Schnee compiled new liner notes.
When this album was first released in the United States in 1983, Arista changed the name of the album to Sidekicks and rearranged the track order. For this reissue, Superfecta Recordings has restored the original album title and track order (1-10) as the Thompson Twins intended.

Customer Reviews:
Great album, but where are the remixes.......2006-10-10
Absolutely, the best album from the Twins. Although "Into the Gap" made them stars and it is itself a great album. QS&SK is more quirky, energetic, and enjoyable.
Now on to the missing remixes. As IggyBowieLou pointed out, there were 6 tracks on the B-side of the cassette edition. One of the first CDs I burned when I got my first burner way back when was this album and the 6 tracks. The total running time of the US album release and the bonus tracks clocks in at 73:50. It appears that the CD can contain either the bonus tracks, or the extended versions of the original songs, but probably not both. A rundown of the approximate lengths of the bonus tracks are:
- Love Lies Fierce 6:55
<- Remix of "Love Lies Bleeding"
- (Long) Beach Culture 6:38
<- Remix of "Beach Culture", B-side of "Lies" single
- No Talkin' 6:13
<- Instrumental (almost) of "Lies"
- Rap Boy Rap 7:22
<- Remix of "Love on Your Side"
- Frozen in Time 6:22
<- Remix of "Kamikaze"
- Fallen Out 2:30
<- Instrumental of "All Fall Out"
The cassette version still occasionally pops up on eBay.
for collectors of 12" versions on CD...at last you get some complete.......2006-01-04
As far as I know, this is the FIRST time the full 7 and a half minute version of "Love on Your Side" has been on CD--every compilation I've ever found the supposed extended version on has used the EDIT from their Greatest Remixes CD--and Lies, while not as hard to find complete, is also often just the edited version from the same CD, but here, it is the full 6 minutes and 37 seconds. And We Are Detectives is 5 minutes and 49 seconds. So the bonnus tracks alone make this CD worth the purchase.
Superfecta really does care.......2005-09-10
There have been some reviews about the album which, while factual, I think don't give all the facts in the matter. The Superfecta reissue is indeed worthy of purchase especially for those who find the 36 dollar Japanese reissue out of reach.
Superfecta, given contract obligations that they use the original track listing for the US release of Quick Step and Side Kick (then known as Side Kicks), included the cut used on the ORIGINAL US release of the album. While this may not be the true genuine cut for the UK and elsewhere release, it is what they were required to use to release the album here.
That being said, the album is still worth of purchase as several of the bonus tracks were unavailable prior to this release. It is debatable whether or not they should have used the original instrumental remixes. I am happy to see these albums rereleased and I appreciate Superfecta's efforts.
A little constructive criticism never hurt. You can find their webpage along with a forum here:

The Twin Trio.......2005-01-07
I really like this CD, the bonus extras, make it even more worth while, at a reasonable price. I have been a fan of TT since Human Leauge was "Being Boiled, and what a great song that is". I have so many 12" vinyl remixes, and of course the 12" collection of remixes, and so many other CD's. There are alot of songs here, that I do not have, sure some are a bit drab, but not EVERY....CD is non stop packed with hits. I suggest this only for the fact I am a true fan drab or not, this group set in motion "The Tail" in the Mid 1980's remember (if not the brightly coloured hair, with a "tail" bleached, or Coloured black in the rear of the scalp) If you do not remember then you may not be interested in MY choice of taste, yet we are all different. I am just hoping with all the GREAT 80's gropus, having there hits remixed to today's 2005 club standards, they will follow, as well turning Lies, or Into The Gap and so many others into a HUGE club Anthem. I also recommend...(if you have not double clicked on another topic) the 12" remix collection. I am sure it is avialable on CD NOW, grey on the cover, the remixes are outstanding. Hope this is of help/Jason Prof DJ
a classic...........but re-released with wrong bonus tracks!.......2004-11-12
THIS IS a) THE BEST THOMPSON TWINS ALBUM AND b) ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER. ITS DEFINITELY MY FAVE ALBUM EVER. HOWEVER.....I, ALONG WITH MANY FANS HAVE BEEN WAITING PATIENTLY FOR THE RE-ISSUES AND DVD'S AND FOR THEM TO RE-ISSUE SUCH A CLASSIC ALBUM, ONE WOULD THINK THEY WOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND RELEASE IT WITH ITS ORIGINAL U.S "DOUBLE PLAY" BONUS TRAX. THERE GOES A MISSED OPPORTUNITY!!! I DONT KNOW WHATS WORSE, THIS OR "INTO THE GAP" BEING RE-RELEASED WITH BONUS TRACKS THAT BELONG TO THE "FUTURE DAYS" ALBUM. IF YOUR NOT GONNA DO IT RIGHT, DONT DO IT AT ALL. BUT ITS STILL GETTING FIVE STARS BECAUSE THIS ALBUM CONTAINS SUCH CLASSICS AS "KAMIKAZE" AND "LOVE LIES BLEEDING"

Too Overlooked.......2006-03-30
Get past the first 3 tracks and this is a GOLDMINE. Yes, it is a turn from their first release but the maturation and the hamonies are wonderful. This is Seattle Sound, if you are a fan of the "era" then Green Apple Quick Step ownership is a must.
In other words, if you have Nirvana albums, AIC, Tad, Soundgarden - this is just one of the many bands you'll wanna hear to know who was playing with the big boys and should have been making big money. (Sweet Water, Tad, Melvins)
Much weaker than the debut, punkier and less focused........2004-01-24
Green Apple Quick Step had an unusually strong batch of songs on its debut, Wonderful Virus, injecting a Hawkwind-like love of science fiction and progressive-rock melodicism into its punk spirit. The result was one of the unsung beauties of '90s alternative rock.
Losing its record deal seems to have hurt the band, because Reloaded is a far weaker record, despite the involvement of Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) as co-producer. The spritely "Dizzy", which appeared on the soundtrack to The Basketball Diaries, was a deserved radio hit, but "Los Vargos" seems very close to it melodically and only works because of the Ty Willman/Mari Ann Braeden vocal tag team. Braeden does a long-overdue lead vocal on "No Favors", but the song is basic punk nonsense: "I'm burned out on politics/Slimeball you make me sick/Deadhead get over it/I'm already gone"? This time around, there are fewer downright great rock anthems, and the band is most successful on poppier moments like "Dizzy", with its car-cruising chorus, and hidden track "Halloween", which sounds like an intimate acoustic-guitar jam with Braeden and Willman harmonizing quite beautifully.
The first album was better, hands down, thanks to a catchier batch of songs and heightened energy. If by some miracle you discover this band (and it deserves to be heard), Wonderful Virus is the place to start.
Worth having in your collection.......2000-07-18
This is a really great album with the exception of 2 or 3 "okay" songs. Even on these songs the lyrics are deep and well thought out, rated "okay" only because the singer sounds as if he's reading his poetry notebook into the song with lack of a good melody. "Las Vargos" is by far the best song on the album as well as one of the best songs I have ever heard with it's rock-out quality, catchy words and melody. "Underwater" and "TV Girl" are deeply moving slower songs, the latter begining with the perfect guitar riff only to build up into a stronger and more beautiful rock ballad. Buy it.
Awesome.......1999-12-21
This is a fantastic album. I love all kinds of music but these guys are the best. From rockers like Los Vargos to acoustic rockers like Halloween. This is an album you can listen to over and over and still enjoy like you heard it for the first time. BUY THIS! You will love it.
One listen and you're hooked!.......1998-06-25
This catchy and poppy album only requires that you listen to one song, then you're hooked and you won't be able to get that song out of your head, believe me, I know! Live, they play with so much energy and have fun on stage, causing you to want to jump on stage with them. Buy the CD(s) (this one is the best one they've put out, in my humble opinion) and see them live if at all possible!

thanks again, naxos!.......2007-04-04
naxos is the greatest budget label of all-time. i've gotten so many great discs from them, and never a bummer. as for this disc, it's a great idea(arrangements of the songs of stephen foster for 19th century brass band, performed on period instruments), wonderfully executed. i have many recordings of stephen foster material, and this is one of the best. this brass band sounds fantastic and the audio quality is very very fine. i highly recommend that you make this a part of your household.
Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20
Imagine a post-Civil War family trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening to hear the town band play a concert of arrangements of popular tunes, that gentler period's equivalent of a rock concert of today. That's essentially what we have here. The Chestnut Brass Company, a Philadelphia brass quintet which on occasion plays on everything from Baroque sackbuts to the most modern trumpets and trombones, here plays on instuments of the saxhorn family. Saxhorns, invented by Adolphe Sax, the fellow who also invented the better-known saxophone, are brass instruments perfected in the 1840s. Their conical bore projects a uniquely sweet and mellow sound. They were exceedingly popular for town bands during the latter half of the century, but their use had waned by the turn of the 20th century. This quintet consists of an E flat soprano, a B flat soprano, an E flat alto, a B flat baritone, and a E flat contrabass saxhorn. The dulcet tones and sonic blend are a marvel to behold. Partly, of course, this is due to the expert playing by Bruce Barrie, Susan Sexton (or is it SAXton?), Marian Hesse, Larry Zimmerman, and Jay Krush.
Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.
As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.
Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.

For those of you who enjoy the music, as it was sung and played during the Civil War, this recording is a "must!" J.A. McA.
Living history.......1999-07-31
So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title
(DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

Very catchy grunge-power pop, unfairly ridiculed........2004-01-24
I remember two industry jokes about Green Apple Quick Step (named after a Byrds song, of all things): a) That it was "the last unsigned band in the Washington grunge scene; and b) That its song, "Bottle", was a ripoff of Nirvana's "Negative Creep".
I don't know if either observation was true, but I do know that when I first saw lead single "Dirty Water Ocean" on Muchmusic, I bought the album right away and it stuck to my CD player like glue. While far from a perfect album, Wonderful Virus is full of quirky charm, snappy songwriting, and instrumental hooks.
There's something to be said for a band that can make "Peel away/Hairless skin from the alien" into a chorus hook, and that's exactly what it does on "Ludes and Cherrybombs". While the sci-fi-hip lyrics are an acquired taste, the inherent musicality of the songwriting gets through. "Dirty Water Ocean" is a breathless rush of adrenalin, like the fastest, crunchiest ruckus raised by a band right next door; ripoff or no, the shuffling "Bottle", with its sludgy Alice in Chains-like groove, changing tempos and male-female vocal tag team, is an arresting rock tune; "Rapid" and personal favourite "Eating on All Fours" distinguish this band, the former with its languishing free-flowing melodicism, the latter for its muscular rock-anthem energy, blitz of chord changes, and bassist Mariann Braeden's wistful backing vocal.
Lead singer Ty Willman's vocal style owes more to progressive rock (sounding almost like Blue Oyster Cult's Eric Bloom!) than punk or grunge; the participation of Braeden in vocal chores enriches the sonic palette greatly; and the instrumentation crackles.
One of my favourite records of that fertile alternative-rock period.
They deserve more credit.........2003-04-05
This album is so amazing and such a breath of fresh air.. I also like "Reloaded" too..
A Band That Should Be Recognized As One of the Best Ever.......1999-03-20
Who can't love the backwater/alternative sound of Ty Willman's voice. As if his vocals alone are not enough to hook you, Mari Ann Braeden's angelic background singing adds an element that separates GAQS's stlyes from all others. I'm an experienced music listener, who orders you to buy this album. This album gives you alternative rock songs such as "Feel My Way", and "Dirty Water Ocean". Also amazing songs that differ in stye, such as the soft "Rapid", and the spunky "Can't Believe". And who couldn't be obsessed with the song (my favorite) "Ludes And Cherrybombs".

Great Historic Recording.......2003-03-01
20th century march composers all owe a debt of gratitude to Claudio Grafulla, whose outstanding composing, arranging and directing helped to bring bands into the modern era. He not only transformed "quicksteps" into modern marches, but also was one of the first to include woodwinds in brass bands. And the selections on this album are an outstanding example of Civil War music, in general.
The Dodworth Saxhorn Band is named for the outstanding band of the same name, which was the premier brass band in the United States from the 1840s to the 1880s, and which featured saxhorns, which were a variety of brass instrument with a backward-facing bell which produces a very mellow sound. Of course, the modern Dodworth Band uses authentic recreations of these instruments, expertly played.
One of the cornet soloists in the original Dodworth band during the Civil War was David Wallis Reeves, composer of the popular early march "2nd Regiment Connecticut National Guard", and whom Sousa called "The father of band music in America".
The notes accompanying this CD are very extensive and make this worth getting by themselves.
Very nice historical document........2002-02-09
For the people who love the music of the U.S.civil war era, it's a very good recording. The arrangements are very well done and played. It is a good CD to have in a collection of that kind of music. For me it's a good deal.
Antique Civil War era instruments sparkle in this recording........1999-08-23
I have listened to this CD and love it. Yes, I got my copy as a birthday present from my brother who plays bass in the Dodworth Saxhorn Band. But don't think that colored my impressions of it. I knew they were playing antique instruments from the Civil War era so I was not expecting the intonation and accuracy of modern brass instruments. I was stunned by the richness of the sound and the precision of the playing. That they could produce such a delightful recording is a testimony to the quality of musicians who performed as well as the painstaking attention to detail of their director. Very well done!
History come alive.......1999-06-26
As always with a New World recording, the scholarly notes and bibliography that accompany the CD are worth the purchase price alone. Therefore their brand new
(80556-2) is no exception. Having so many band concerts in my collection, I was afraid this would be superfluous; but thanks to the authenticity of the recreation by the Dodworth Saxhorn Band (even the name conjures up the middle of the 19th century) conducted by Paul Eachus, I found this program to be a complete delight. As an opera-lover, I found the arrangements from "Der Freischutz," "Ballo in Maschera" and "Nabucca" [as it is misspelled on the manuscripts New World used to prepare its notes] especially welcome. So is the Stephen Foster tune that provides another excellent example of how all sorts of music was grist for the brass band mill. The other selections are perhaps less melodic and from the same mold, but it is all a welcome relief from the supercharged recordings of Sousa that are so common (in both senses of the adjective). Claudio Grafulla, you see, was not just a hack arranger. He led the 7th Regiment Band of New York for 27 years and conducted his own arrangements of both classical and popular music. Lovers of the march will love this CD. And as always I urge teachers of history to play selections from it (and most of the other New World recordings) when they want to give their students the feel for what life was like during all those dates and events they are forced to memorize for quizzes. And I am not forgetting the gym teachers who are always looking for new music to exercise by!

Customer Reviews:
Moving traditional music.......2004-02-05
Music of the period performed in the style of the period and with great feeling. Don't be afraid that the music is "stuffy" or academic. It is funny, sad, and rousing. It gives the feeling of immediacy that never goes out of style.
Splendid program, beautifully done!.......2002-06-01
A splendid program of varied, contrasting pieces for voice and
instruments. All performers are complete masters of this music
and its idiomatic performance style, and they execute it with skill, wit and (where appropriate) real depth of feeling.
This is an album which everyone who loves Civil War music,
or who is meeting it here for the first time, will cherish.
Attention Hardcore Reenactors.......2000-09-14
I am a campaign-style Union reenactor in the Eastern US who has emphasized Civil War-era music in my knowledge base. I was also a musician for several years. DC Hall's New Concert ensemble has done a first-rate job of recreating our Northern ancestors' music. From my reading, their efforts have approximated the small, live music groups that were popular before and during the War. The liner notes are well-written, and historically accurate. Perfect for background music when having your pards over to count threads or make up rounds. I recommend it without hesitation.
This is always going to be one of my favorites!.......1999-05-08
D.C. Hall's NC&QB is a wonderful small ensemble that really adds new light to the Civil War genre. At times, it is so tender in feeling (The Picture on the Wall)and then rowdy in spirit (The Year of Jubilo). The familiar Star Spangled Banner is done in a wonderful unique rythme. Get this recording!

Customer Reviews:
A collection of 19th-century American political music.......2002-03-03
You have heard the slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" and this CD collection of American political music from the 19th-century allows you to hear the song from the 1840 election. Other songs evidence strong feelings both for and against Andrew Jackson, "The Hunters of Kentucky" versus "King Andrew," as well as "John Tyler's Lamentation," "Filmore the Wise," "We Are Coming Father Abraham," and "Hurrah for Hayes and Honest Ways." Even more interesting are the songs about slavery and abolition ("The Grave of the Slave," "Get Off the Track," and "The Fugitive's Song"). Teachers of American history will certainly find tracks to use to supplement their textbooks. There are also instrumental tracks marches, grand marches, quick steps, gallops, a gallopade, a waltz and even a polka for various Presidential candidates. There are also dirges for William Henry Harrison and Abraham Lincoln.
"The Platform Committee" singing these works consists of mezzo-soprano Linda Russell, tenors Patrick Romano, Frederick Urrey and Rudolph Palmer, and bass-baritone John Ostendorf. The Chestnut Brass Company plays period instruments, most of which were made during the mid-19th-century, although there are some reproductions. You will hear Keyed Bugles and Cornopeans that date before the Civil War. While most of the instrumental pieces heard in this collection were intended for bands, original orchestrations survive for only three of the pieces ("General Taylor Storming Monterey," "Hail to the Chief" and "The American National Waltz"). The rest of the instrumental works had to be rearranged in the style of the period from piano sheet music.
Whether you are an aficionado of 19th-century band music or political history, you will find this a collection well worth hearing. Certainly teachers of American History will be able to use some of the songs to great advantage in the classroom. Note: This album was originally released in 1992 by Newport Classic as "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too: A Collection of American Political Marches, Songs, and Dirges."

Customer Reviews:
Stand Up And Salute The Flag.......2001-12-27
When I listen to this recording I feel impelled to jump to my feet and sing along. Some of the best sounds the musicians of our U.S. military bands have produced. Jimerson's renditions are unsurpassed!
Ed McMahon Was Right!.......2001-11-11
After I heard the music from this CD at the Ed McMahon Show in Branson, Missouri, I bought it. This has to be the best recording of patriotic music I've ever heard. The singers are Metropolitan Opera material and the band clearly employs many of the best bandsmen in the U.S. Armed Services.
Middle of the road........2001-11-04
The American National Military Band is great. The singing is awful. It would have been much better to have remove the singing and just have an instrumental CD. This is a 5 star CD with 5 star music but the singer drops it to 3 stars. Would have been 1 star if there weren't a few well done instrumental songs in it.
