Customer Reviews:
Wonderful...but still not all of it........2006-06-28
The three Joy of Cooking albums are each magnificent.
I knew Terry when she was singing in a Berkeley coffee shop. She sang like this in the tiny room and brought goose bumps to me.
Later when they were famous and on the cover of Time magazine, Terry and Toni did a freebee in front of the Berkeley student union. We mobbed the place and it was the singular most joyful concert I have ever experienced (free didn't hurt either).
These three albums bring them back--listen with both ears in a quiet room and imagine they are singing to you. They are.
But there's still something missing. They cut at least two other albums together, but didn't refer to them as Joy of Cooking albums--"Cross Country", and "Good for You Too" (MCA 386). I'm still looking for these two...and you should be too. They are incredible.
Late 60s early 70s gem.......2006-05-26
When I first heard this there were not that many female rockers, basically Grace & Janis. But this was different, defiant, yet gentle. Stong and nurturing. It was joyous and it cooked. Great to see it out on CD.
And Not Forgotten.......2006-04-28
Seems to have taken forever for the reissuing of the Bay area's Joy Of Cooking's three (only three!) albums, but here they are. Earthy and visceral, each has its particular charms. This, the first, has several fine examples of mellow SF post-Grateful Dead acoustic rock/soul/gospel/blues/etc hybrids. Of particular note are "Red Wine At Noon" with Teri Brown and Toni Garthwaite's lovely harmonizing and the deceptively unassuming "Too Late, But Not Forgotten" which features some mellifluous piano work from Brown as well. The band stretches out a bit on "Did You Go Downtown" - - the call-and-response vocals are quite affecting; it must have been awesome when performed live. And "Children's House" is a great closer, with a lengthy and layered choir crescendo lending an enthralling gospel effect before the song settles down to a practically post-coital purr to end the album. Great stuff. Joy Of Cooking didn't get a whole lot of airplay in the early 70s, and most people don't even know they ever existed. Too bad. Here's your chance to do some catching up on one of the era's finest.
joy of music.......2005-08-29
I had heard this album in it's entirety way back in 1973, and had looked for it until it's current release date on CD in 2003, a full 30 years later. Well, not quite that long, but from the waning days of vinyl pressings and had relinquished my albums for the durability of aluminum discs. Listening again to an old friend, I was immediately transported back to a gentler, deeper, and definately more evolved musical era. This disc's music is in pace with the 60's, though completely timeless. Brown and garthwaite's vocals are the driving force, but not without Garthwaite, Kasten, and Wilson's music, for, without one, the whole thing couldn't have come together. It is a rarity and should be in any collection of 60's music, a true gem to not be missed, and anyone who has not, has truly missed something for a lifetime. As is the fate of much wonderful music, I'm glad that this one was not lost in time. Edward A. Schatz.
Oren's right..........2004-10-22
Oren is right...except I don't know if I agree the music/album is better than Let it Bleed, which to me is an all time classic. I met Oren in 1995, his taste in music is Dead On...those of us who appreciate, like, and still listen to the 60's bluesy rock are not only aging hippies! (well, I guess I am...)- this is just amazing music. Thank you Oren!

Customer Reviews:
Timeless, wonderful music awaits your discovery.......2007-02-08
The Joy of Cooking's music sounds fresh and refreshing -- remarkable given that it was originally published in the early 1970s. Toni Brown is a great songwriter, producing sophisticated lyrics to accompany her music, which draws on folk, country, jazz and rock. Terri Garthwaite is a fantastic singer, with the emotional strength and capacity of great blues and gospel performers. The band itself plays the tunes in a driven manner. "Thousand Miles," "Closer to the Ground," and other songs are particularly effective, and easily could be hit singles today.
Joy of Cooking just keeps cooking.......2007-01-04
So I first had this in the very early seventies, and am really pleaed to reaquire them and realize how those jazzy ladies' music has just worn so well. They're great!
Still Cooking.......2006-06-17
When my vinyl copy of CttG finally wore out, I was really bummed to discover that Capitol Records only saw fit to release a random collection off of all three of Joy of Cooking's albums with American Originals. Finally, the producers at Acadia have preserved a really great slice of music from the early '70s. Listening to the album again after so many years, it was really a rush to hear songs left off the AO CD, such as Blues for a Friend, A Thousand Miles and Sometimes Like a River. This album of the three JOC put together I liked the best, but all of their music is classic (folk) rock. Their rereleased CDs are all going on the same shelf as my Ten Years After, John Mayall, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Hendrix and Albert King CDs among the other greats of the era. I'd highly recommend turning on the lava lamp, dabbing a splash of patchouli and giving in to the Joy.
This IS San Francisco 60's rock.......2005-09-30
Toni Brown, Terry Garthwaite....
Before Heart was a dream in those girls eyes, these two women were rocking it hard, but with feeling. I heard this on vinyl when I was the tender young age of 13 ( circa 1971 ) and besides thinking Toni Bronn was totaly hot, the music really hit me, with lines like "No use looking to the other side, when your living right down here."
Closer to the Ground ( title track ) Hard growly vocals, great driving bass line, edgy lyrics.
New Colorado Blues, plaintive yet hopefull with a great melody.
Closer to the ground, if fact all of "Joy of Cooking" should be in your music collection if you want to have a clue about the SF music scene in the late 60's.
Pick this plumb while you can.
shirley.......2004-12-27
if you missed Joy of Cookings 2 albums and Zepher from the same time period, you missed some of the very best music of the late 60's early 70's. These are necessary to add to your collection. I was thrilled to see these remastered and released on CD. What a treat

wish this group were still playing, they were light years ahead of there time, a best of on one CD is not possible because it would have to include all of there music, only wish they were still playing.
Castles by Joy of Cooking.......2007-01-24
Even though Joy of Cooking never really became famous, the music they made a litlle bit of jazz, folk, and country blues led them off to a good start.
Let Love Carry You Along is the best song ..would be a good song for living in the world today.
Excellent adult rock from the early '70s.......2006-03-09
Joy of Cooking was the first rock band to have at its heart two great women as lead singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists. The subject matter is still mostly love and loss, but the emotions are adult, and not caught in the hysterics of melodrama (compare, for example, Derek & the Dominos' "Layla"). This is a fine album all around, from the rocking "Don't the Moon Look Fat and Lonesome" through the deeply heartfelt blues at the end. "Let Love Carry You Along" is a great anthem from that era, just as positive and uplifting now as it was then. But these are not "message" songs that are long on intellectual substance and short on musicality and rock. They are balanced, with catchy tunes, excellent arrangements, and a subtle, folk/jazz/rock ensemble executing everything very nicely. If you want songs that speak to our lives with clarity and maturity, and that you can still hum along with and stamp your feet to, and get carried away in the emotion, this is your kind of album. Joy of Cooking put out only 3 albums and didn't last long (Brown and Garthwaite split and pursued solo careers), but the legacy they left us is a fine one.
Few CDs better than this.......2005-09-22
This is one of the best CDs ever made. The songs are so wonderfully written, excellently performed, and superbly produced. Joy of Cooking is an icon from the 70's but the quality of their music is not limited to that decade. Lovers of Marcia Ball, or anyone who appreciates female vocals and piano, will appreciate Joy of Cooking. Off Marcia Ball's last studio work, So Many Rivers, one would swear or bet that "Foreclose on the House of Love" was a Joy of Cooking song. That is how good Joy of Cooking is.

Customer Reviews:
This is so worth it........2007-01-08
Yes, the other reviewer is correct: songs 13 & 14 from disc one were repeated in spots 2 & 3 on CD 2 (which means the songs "Pilot" and "The war you left" were missing entirely. I am an extremely fussy listener and buyer and was upset over this. I contacted the label and they recognized their error in their first printing; re-recorded the second cd and corrected it and sent it to me! This makes for one truly complete Joy Of Cooking, all on one cd and at a very reasonable price.(Look at the price of these cd's seperately). The sound is typical for the early 70's...it won't please those obsessed with remasters. It will please those that remember the band. This was an under estimated band and their folk and Joplinesque stylings are very pleasing to the ear. A toast to Acadia Records for not only making the release available but for correcting their error. This is great hard to find material. Go ahead indulge yourself! Note: I have edited this review after the cd was corrected and the program will not allow me to change this from 3 stars to 5. I now rate this at 5 stars.
missing two tracks.......2006-11-16
I love Joy of Cooking, and was thrilled to see a "complete" CD. However, the copy I received is not "complete." Tracks 2 & 3 on CD #2, which are supposed to be "Pilot" and "The War You Left Behind" are duplicates of tracks 12 & 13 ("Blues for a Friend" and "New Colorado Blues") on CD #1. "Pilot" and "The War You Left Behind" are not on either CD.
I e-mailed the distribution company (in England) but received no reply.
When I brought it to Amazon's attention, I was instructed to return the item for a refund, which I have done.
It's too bad that this isn't really a complete Joy of Cooking. Had it been complete, I would have rated this five stars.

Toni Brown and Terry Garthwaite combine thoughtful with-it lyrics and joyful rock music from various roots-blues (with Terry's soulful voice and blues guitar), rock 'n roll (with Toni's funky keyboards)and country for sounds that pick you up!
They are reissuing all their 70's sounds and keeping on with their careers! Get their CD's.
Booming bass and grounding vocals.......2003-02-18
This music just simply needs to be more available.Joy of Cooking can be described as 70"s cutting edge folk-rock, "tell it how it is" experience. The voices and lyrics of Terry Garthwaite and Toni Brown stand in a world of their own. Terry Garthwaite voice makes anyone unfamiliar with this music , stop and ask who it is. Every time I have played this band people want to borrow it. Music collectors of the world unite and give Joy of Cooking their proper place in music history. A must have for serious collectors.
