Deadsy's debut has been a long time coming. Regardless of media hype, this album has been on and off the shelves for the past six years. It's a wonder it's finally seeing the light of day. At the very least, Deadsy have come up with an interesting and intriguing style. Ambient gothic tones and keyboards are entwined with '80s-style synth pop to give them a retro sound, yet distorted guitars and programmed drums bring them up to date. Vocalist Elijah Blue, son of Cher and Greg Allman, has a droning monotone style that sounds like a cross between Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode and Peter Steele of Type O Negative. At times, it can be quite disturbing. Of the album highlights, the guitar-driven lead track, "The Key to Gramercy Park," is the most modern-rock radio-friendly of the bunch, followed by their unexpected reworking of the Rush chestnut "Tom Sawyer." "She Likes Big Words" is a light and poppy throwback to early-'80s snyth pop, while the atmospheric "Brand New Love" is as lovely as it is moody. Despite their interesting textures and melodies, Deadsy's songs can sound the same after awhile and may become tiresome to the average listener. --Gail Flug

Hearing or performing music comes closest in the range of human activity to a visceral connection to the past. As long as we have notation and knowledge of how to interpret it, we can effectively experience something like our ancestors did when they sang the same music. Of course, our 20th-century sensibilities and knowledge--or lack thereof--prevent us from sharing identical responses, but as with the music on this disc, when we hear it we are in some way transported to another place. We know a completely different sound world from our own; we know that the accepted order of certain things was different. And we also know that in many ways people haven't changed. Machaut's music conveys a spirituality--both joyful and contemplative--that's as true in its impact as it must have been 600 years ago, a point made ever so clearly by these especially vibrant and vital performances. --David Vernier

Whether a devotee of early music and polyphony or just someone looking for beautiful relaxing music, it would be hard to go wrong with any recording of the Hilliard Ensemble. This is one of their finest. Machaut was a defining voice of late medieval music and is here afforded a quietly joyous treatment by a world class group. The Hilliards are apparently named after Nicolas Hilliard, an Elizabethean court painter noted for his beautiful small portraits, and thus are aptly called as their performances too are exquisite miniatures.

4 out of 5 stars A fine CD, but..........2002-01-06

I heard a live performance (on NPR) of the music of this CD, and then bought the CD. I was a little bit disappointed, but not much. I treasure this CD of the first great polyphonic mass in the history of music. It's just that the virtuosic angular ornamentation in the CD was even more angular and virtuosic in the live performance. So I know that this music could be done just a bit better by this ensemble than this CD shows. But it's still a fine CD, containing a convincing performance of music that has far more than simply historic interest.

5 out of 5 stars The World of Machaut.......2001-08-30

The Mediaeval Frenchman Guillaume de Machaut is one of those composers who shaped the course of musical history most significantly. He wrote some of the earliest known polyphonic pieces of vocal music, as well as writing astonishing poetry for his own semi-sacred songs or 'lais.' On this disc, the Hilliard Ensemble present three of his most representative works, all well worth exploring.
The "Messe de Nostre Dame" (not specifically written for performance in the Paris Cathedral of that name) is a stunning piece with which to open the programme. The impeccably clear-toned voices of the Hilliards etch out Machaut's austere lines with blazing intensity, revelling in the strangely dissonant cadences and dexterous interplay of parts that are the hallmarks of his polyphony. The performers use a quaint form of pronunciation for the Latin, one that (supposedly) re-creates the Mediaeval French flavour with which the listeners of seven centuries ago would have been familiar. This work alone is worth the price of the disc: it makes for rewarding and memorable listening.
The "Lai de la Fonteine" is a simpler work, yet strangely harder to grasp on first hearing. Machaut sets his own text here: a complicated and extensive hymn in praise of the Virgin Mary, using endless metaphors and subtle imagery to create an advanced form of poetry around which music is woven. The music itself is quite simple, doing seemingly little more than to carry the poetry for the listener: much of it is monophonic, with verses being shared amongst three singers who come together for polyphonic sections every so often. The work is best heard complete; much is lost in sampling it although the tracks are conveniently divided to give the listener a choice in the matter. Machaut was clearly a mysterious person - religious yet close to the secular; it shows through in such works as this 'lai.'
The disc closes with a final example of rich-blooded polyphony, again using just three voices, and moreover a sample of Machaut's extraordinary genius. "Ma fin est mon commencement" sets a poem that is crafted as a sort of palindrome (indeed, the second phrase is "et mon commencement est ma fin" - "My end is my beginning and my beginning is my end"). The music is equally well crafted to counterpart the words - three voices, winding their way through repetitive and yet fluid lines as if through some sort of musical jigsaw puzzle. It is a delightful end to a wonderful programme. If you're looking for a sample of Machaut but can only afford one disc, then this has to be the one. Mediaeval music is rarely so well displayed as it is here!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording.......2000-06-21

The Hilliard Ensemble provide an excellent performance of these works, as is typical of their craft. The Notre Dame Mass is really one of the 'standards' of 'early music,' and should not be missed. This is a definitive recording of the work. Don't look any further.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......1999-03-24

On this recording, I most enjoyed Le Lai de la Fonteinne and the rondeau Ma Fin Est Mon Commencement. The Messe, while impeccable, was a bit too esoteric for me. But the other two pieces, which sounded somewhat akin to Machaut's secular compositions in rhythmic and melodic structure, were compatible even with tastes as unsophisticated as mine. By the way, an excellent collection of Machaut's courtly music was recorded by David Munrow, that's how I know what it sounded like. The Hilliard's performance, as usual, is flawless. I love their ethereal voices - so light, so clear, and yet so exact in focus and projection! Each voice sounds somewhat standardized (of all the people that ever sang with the Hilliard, I can readily recognize only David James and Mark Padmore), but at this level of accomplishment uniformity is good. Definitely buy this, it is one of the best Hilliard recordings. But the very best Hilliard recording (in my amateur view anyway, although at least one of the Gramophone editors seems to agree) is Dunstable Motets (reissued on Virgin Veritas). David James sounds like no countertenor ever sounded before or after, including himself. Paul Elliott outdoes himself. Listening to him sing Agnus Dei practically makes one feel for the moment that he outdoes not just himself but every other male vocalist on the British Isles. That is the recording you don't want to miss! Believe me, you'll forget to breathe when you hear it. Of the secular things with some of the Hilliard members don't miss John Gay The Beggar's Opera (w/Paul Elliott) and Charpentier Medee (w/Mark Padmore).

If you like bands like Orgy or the short-lived VideoDrone, you should like these guys. "The Key to Gramarcy Park", "Mansion World", "Brand New Love" and "She Likes Big Words" are stand-outs. It is a pretty solid cd, with ups and downs, but nothing you really have to skip. They do a good cover of "Tom Sawyer" by Rush.
This is one of the better alternative metal bands out there, but they are relatively unknown despite their obvious talent.

But the rest of the songs were very drab and number 4 made me want to kill myself but dont let my opionion stop you from buying it if its what you like.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Early Music. Buy It........2005-12-13

'The Art of Courtly Love' is a two CD set, condensed from a three LP album performed by The Early Music Consort of London. I know less than I would like about early music, considering how much I enjoy it, but one very important thing I do know is that the director of this recording, David Munrow was, until his untimely death, the big man in early music.

One of the many things I especially like about this collection is that by showcasing a lot of vocal music, the tinny quality of a lot of early music is moved to the background. Antother thing I like is the fact that one can plainly distinguish secular from liturgical music by listening carefully to these selections. The biggest differences I see are the appearance of percussion instruments and male / female duets.

One reviewer commented on the quality of the notes. I agree they are good, but only about average for an old music offering by a major label.

Highly recommended to all who like early music.

5 out of 5 stars A Fiver from one of the Archangels of early music performance.......2005-06-26

I bought this when the album was first released. Even though scholarship has advanced, and it can be argued that Munrow's interpretations are dated, what has been lost over the years is the joy in performing this music. Many modern performances are ponderous and much, much too serious. But David Munrow found this music as a wonderous discovery. Through albums such as this one, he released into the open air music that had been locked away, languishing in the libraries for years, trotted out occasionally for a scholarly study, and then tucked back on the shelves. Munrow's enthusiasm for this music is evident in this collection, and his performances make them walk - no, dance - in the open air once more. This album is beautifully performed. I hope the notes in the CD are as good as the ones in my original release.

In 1974, I had the great pleasure of meeting David Munrow and the other members of the Early Music Consort, and was blown away with that enthusiasm and unselfishness, their willingness to discuss their work - I remember Munrow trading recorder performance tips with a friend of mine - and Munrow's truly amazing store of energy. He radiated! : -)

5 out of 5 stars Outdated but Still Rivetingly Interesting.......2005-05-01

This 2-CD boxed set is the digital version of a 3-LP box from 1973 and was reissued in 1996 as part of the edition with which EMI/Virgin celebrated the twentieth anniversary of David Munrow’s unfortunate demise. The recordings, made at London’s prestigious Abbey Road studios, are digitally remastered to a very high standard, so that I found myself enjoying them via headphones more than via loudspeakers, something which is pretty unusual with CDs from the old analogue days. The two discs contains no less than some 156 minutes (51 tracks) of absolutely fascinating music. The first part is devoted to Guillaume Machault’s songs, works which can be dated around 1350 to 1360. The second part of the programme is concerned with the so-called avantgarde from Avignon (including names such as Matteo da Perugia), composers who wrote for esoteric circles around 1380 to 1410. And the third part (the third LP of the original) is devoted to fifteenth-century music from the court of Burgundy, the two great composers here being Dufay and Binchois.

Of course, David Munrow’s performances, fascinating and rivetingly interesting as they are, were shaped by his own interests and research at the time, and the booklet notes point out that since then “scholarship and performance practices have moved on healthily”, which I interpret to mean that today nobody would dream of performing this music the way Munrow did: for instance, he has most of the songs accompanied by a whole plethora of ancient instruments, although today it is generally agreed that works from this period should be sung unaccompanied or with minimal instrumental support. Munrow also performs some of the songs as purely instrumental pieces, a legitimate decision perhaps. Munrow also uses the two countertenors James Bowman and Charles Brett for many of the songs, and not everyone will appreciate being bombarded with their somewhat forced androgynous falsetto for nearly three hours; personally, it was the singing of Martyn Hill, tenor, and Geoffrey Shaw, baritone, which delighted my ear during these sessions. Along with the instruments, of course: slide trumpet, cornett, shawm, crwth, fiddle, rebec, citole and so on, plus several tracks with the amazing Christopher Hogwood playing an organ that sounds, at least, very old – unfortunately, the otherwise good liner notes give no details concerning the instruments used.

The Old French texts are printed in full with English translations, so it is possible to follow every nuance. Exceptionally good value for money! – For more historically-informed performances of music of this kind, I suggest searching names such as Gothic Voices, Hilliard Ensemble or Binchois Consort.

5 out of 5 stars If 6 were available, this would get them!.......2002-02-16

Lovely, beautiful, amazing, charming, and vital. I'll not replicate the previous reviewer, though my favorites differ from his, but I bought this on LP 25 years ago and it changed my life. These are exhilarating performances, that move you effortlessly through time and space into a world both far away and very, very close. So much great music, wonderfully performed. Take a chance--it might change your life as well!

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest early music performances ever recorded.......2001-09-03

And an intriguing work of scholarship besides. This was originally released back in the early 1970's by the late David Munrow as a three album box set.

The first part of this recording is basically dedicated to Machaut and his contemporaries. The chanson -Amours me fait desirer- remains striking to this day, with its unusual leap in its first measures. -Amis tout dous- is a lovely miniature, and so also is the monophonic -Quant je sui mis au retour-. But the high point of this part of the record is -Quant j'ay l'espart-, a duet between countertenor and bass cornetto (a serpent?), understated and heartbreaking.

The second part is weirdness from the Avignon court of the Popes, the time when rhythmic notation got more sophisticated, and composers grew more experimental. The unusual chromaticism of -Fumeux fume- is given a great performance here. The -Tre fontane- estampie is given a reading here that is truly frenzied. -Plasanche, ou tost- is a lovely song. You also get rhythmic oddities like -Le greygnour bien-.

The third album nears Renaissance music, and focuses on Dufay and Binchois. Loud instruments like sackbuts and shawms are featured on pieces like -Donnes l'assault-, which seems risky, but sometimes works. The usually quiet pieces on the -La Spagna- ground are here given a marching-band performance on loud winds. The real high points here, though, are the motet -O tres piteulx-, Binchois absolutely gorgeous -Amoureux suy-, and the setting of Petrarch's -Vergine bella-.

This is a definitive early music performance that should never be allowed to go out of print. My only complaint with the CD edition is that it lacks some of the more extensive notes that came with the phonograph record booklet.

Just when you think you know somebody, some uncharacteristic behavior shows itself and you instantly realize that you have more to learn. Such an enlightening occurrence is bound to happen for listeners to this disc accustomed to hearing the "memorable tunes, regular phrasing, and clear harmony" of Machaut's most commonly performed works. Here, the four-member Orlando Consort--alto, two tenors, and baritone--happily and with masterful ease introduce us to the "other" Machaut, one of irregular phrases, lively syncopated rhythms, and long flowing melodies that interact contrapuntally with two or three other vocal lines. The melodic structure often consists of cleverly intertwined strings of suspensions followed by quick resolutions, giving a jumpy impetus to many lengthy passages and entire songs. Among these 14 secular songs are many beautiful poetic texts and some notable melodies, but, interestingly, Machaut didn't attempt to fit music with textual meaning. For us, it remains just to listen--and perhaps to read the words separately--and we are rewarded with some of the 14th century's most sensuous, intriguing, and exotic music. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Interesting music, great singing.......1999-12-20

The music on this CD represents the style of composition prevalent in the mid-14th century, the so called ars nova. This style was notable for "hocketing" (i.e. oscillation between short notes and short rests in the upper voices), and even syncopation, but it also included a technique quite different from the ones just mentioned - the so called isorhythm (i.e. regularly repeating rhythmic and harmonic structures). Machaut was a great master of both of these facets of ars nova, but he was by no means the only one, as was demonstrated by a recent Clerks' recording of music from the Ivrea Codex (and if you ask me, the greatest master of isorhythm was John Dunstable). As the in-house reviewer mentions, the music on this disc is more idiosyncratic, less regular, more syncopated than the typical 14-th century musical output. Breaking the rules while perfecting the style has always been a sign of genius, in any age. The Orlando Consort give this music the recording it deserves (I must commend this group for carving out a niche for themselves despite the fact that the idea of having an all-male quartet sing early music so smacks of the Hilliard that it would seem to be a difficult act to follow). The voices blend exquisitely, combining the beauty of tone with an expert technique - even Robert Jones, whose voice I normally find rather harsh, sounds relatively mellow and seductive in this recording. Charles Daniels is great, as always: his solo piece, Liement me deport, is utterly delightful. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air.......2004-06-16

You can't help but be blown away by this cd. The song writing, lyrics, production and sheer creativity demand that you at least give this cd a listen. This type of music, whatever you want to call it, is usually not my thing, but I love this band. I hear new things everytime I listen. In an era where everything on MTV is pure crap you have to love when a band like this shows up.

        5 out of 5 stars Deadsy RULES!.......2004-02-11

Deadsy is the greatest band ever. What other band has blended intelect, harcore guitar, keyboard, synths, deep vocals, and color and call it a band? Deadsy has, "The Key To Gramercy Park", "Le Cirque En Rose (the Obsolesence)" "Lake Waramug" and "The Elements are great songs with each element working together. "Tom Sawyer" and "Brand New Love" are the best covers ever. "Winners, Flowing Glower, Future Years, and Commencement" are all slower but still wonderful. Buy this CD

        5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2003-06-16

Deadsy is taking music to a new level. They are like nothing I have heard before. I would suggest anyone to get this CD, it is the BEST!!!

5 out of 5 stars BUY ALL DEADSY YOU CAN!!!.......2003-04-07

Deadsy is the best band out there today. I definately recommend not only this CD, but their new CD coming out this summer: Phantasmagore. Check em out...

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome cd.......2003-03-29
