The Lightning Seeds are actually a single seed, Ian Broudie, who sprouted from the same scene in Liverpool, England, as Echo & the Bunnymen and Icicle Works. Cloudcuckooland contains distant hints of Echo, especially in the guitar track on "Pure." But this album is much more liquid than anything the Bunnymen ever created. Cloudcuckooland is entirely programmed, with an overlay of acoustic rhythm guitar. Broudie's vocals approach a falsetto that Brit-pop fans will find soothing and others might find wimpy. These are entirely pleasant, full-bodied pop songs that are not at all demanding or raw, but too well composed and produced to be called bubblegum. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars Most Americans still don't know this band...........2006-06-02

What a shame, they're really missing out. Anyway, I got this CD as a bargain for a buck in NYC (after having listened to one song in a britpop compilation), and I've been hooked ever since. They're a very light and happy band. Great to listen to when you just feel like chilling and relaxing. Fave songs: All I want, Pure, Sweet Dreams, the nearly man, and don't let go.

5 out of 5 stars Those were the days.................................2005-09-09

This cd is a masterpiece that brings me right back to my high school crush, and riding my bike on those hot summer days. The melody and lyrics of this cd are what road trips, late nights, and moments to remember are made of. I am guilty of enjoying this cd because of the nostalgia it brings, but I guarantee it will create the same feelings down the road for you if you buy it. The tunes are upbeat, lyrics creative, and the vocals are solid. Pick it up!

5 out of 5 stars ALBUM DE TECHNO-TOUCH.......2005-06-02

5 out of 5 stars A Hero For the Wallflowers.......2004-02-18

I am deeply disappointed that we in the States did not do justice to The Lightning Seeds. We fork out millions for unimaginative techno, yet let the beauty of Ian Broudie go unheeded. It's our loss.

Cloudcuckooland came out when I was a non-descript freshman in high school. He became my hero. I mean, look at him. He's not exactly Ricky Martin. Yet he wrote about wistful, unrealized longings that spoke to me as I tried to craft an identity among 1,500 other equally confused souls.

"Pure" was antithetical to the "I'm Gonna Sex You Up" mentality of the day. I think purity is a decent word to define the message of The Lightning Seeds (which is also why he was probably ignored). "Sweet Dreams" and "The Nearly Man" were just a few of the many brilliant songs he composed.

Okay, "Frenzy" was a stinker, but hey! It's the only one. It's hard to think about my youth without calling to mind sitting in my bedroom on a cold December night, listening to the encouragement of Ian Broudie--urging me to find the purity in someone, and not to take it away. If you ever battled loneliness as a youth--or even now--you may find your spirits lifted by Cloudcuckooland.

4 out of 5 stars "Lightning Seeds" will grow on you........2003-07-01

Apparently this guy was in "Echo and the Bunnymen" at one point, and though I can see subtle similarities, this is far more pop and catchy. Released in 1990 before all the "alternative" craze, this sounds alot like the Brit-pop from that era. This is an easy listen all the way through. "All I want" and "Pure" were the hits, but every other song is just as sweet. "Lightning Seeds" cover a great song on the original "Austin Powers" soundtrack if you have that. My favorite on "Cloudcuckooland" is "The Price". You can just drift away to that song. There's also a "hits" disc or two around if you want those. Overall, I'd say you should plant this in your collection.
