Nu metal might be the movement we should thank for flushing out some of rock's hoarier old clichés, but with the rock & roll ranks beginning to resemble a Marine roll call, what with all those bulging biceps and close haircuts, it's comforting that the self-titled release from Los Angeles's Boy Hits Car is able to reconcile the savage razor's edge of Papa Roach with some of the flamboyancy of alternative music. Their second album offers a number of pleasantly contrary moments, not the least of which include "The Rebirth" (which summons recollections of the Screaming Trees) and "As I Watch the Sun F**k the Ocean" (recalling Jane's Addiction). While the band falls short in spots, their bit-of-this, bit-of-that dynamic works surprisingly smoothly throughout, as rolls of heavy riffage break over flute, bongo, and tabla. Boy Hits Car might be a little too off-center to topple the likes of Papa Roach from nu metal's zenith, but this fine album is a reminder that an alternative take on a genre can restore faith in the definite article. --Louis Pattison

About the Artist
We're Boy Hits Car. My name is Scott, I'm the bass player and this is our bio in my own words:

Louis (guitar), Craig (vocals, acoustic 12-string guitar), and I all grew up together from early childhood. Louis and Craig were neighbors in the same condo complex and knew each other since they were wearing diapers. I lived a mile away so it wasn't until the beginning of elementary school that my path crossed with theirs. In 1990 Craig told me that we had to form a band. "Scott, you've already been playing bass, Lou's been playing guitar--he can play all kinds of Slayer and Metallica stuff--and I can sing!" A mutual friend of ours played drums and our first band was formed. We played parties and had fun and all was going well until our drummer quit to join another band. We found Michael through a "Drummer Wanted" ad placed in an L.A. paper and in February of 1993 Boy Hits Car was born. We wrote songs and gigged locally. Los Angeles has what we call the "pay-to-play" circuit where certain clubs will charge bands sometimes as much as several hundred dollars to pre-sell tickets to their own show which ensures them a slot on a good bill. Since we always agreed bands shouldn't have to pay money to express their art we opted not to take that route. Why do what is expected of you? Why let the car hit you? We agreed to stand strong as the boy and hit the car. Going it this way was sometimes tough. We never did pay-to-play but with no fan base we were given the worst possible time slots, like 12:15am on a Tuesday or 7:30pm on a Friday. We got used to playing for next to no one and in turn, we learned how to play for ourselves, to connect with each other, to feed off each other's energy and give it our all: blood, sweat, and tears (literally). We became stronger as a unit. In March of 1995 a booking agent got hold of our demo tape and sent us out on a six-week tour. We'd hardly been out our front door and there we were traveling across the country, just the four of us and all our equipment in our brown van, "Scooby", living together, playing our music, and growing closer as band mates and as brothers. We were still playing to next to no one but we were living our dream. Once home, we wrote more songs, played more gigs, and recorded more demo tapes. We did some more short tours over the country and in 1997 we got signed to a very independent record label. We recorded our first album, "My Animal" (released in May 1998). We gave it all we had but the label gave it no promotion and two weeks after its limited release and low sales, they dropped us. Feeling discouraged and disheartened we pressed on and believed in the music we were creating and ourselves. We continued to do what we had always done. We played more gigs with shoddy time slots and toward the end of 1999 we began garnering interest from various record labels and in January 2000 we signed with our first choice, Wind-up Records. In February we picked up a handful of dates on the Sno-Core tour opening for System Of A Down, Incubus, and Mr. Bungle and recently we opened for Papa Roach on a couple of dates, layin' it down to some crazy crowds. As I write this we are in the studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, recording our new full-length album, scheduled for release in January 2001. I know not where tomorrow will take us; all I know is where we are today. And today I feel fortunate to be able to create and play beautiful music with my three brothers. And in this moment we are pouring everything we've got into this record to make it the sickest, loveliest, ugliest, prettiest, most beautiful, melodic, heartfelt album coming at ya straight from the depths of our soul. People always ask me, what does Boy Hits Car stand for? My answer is simple: Boy Hits Car believes in living from the heart and following your dream. It doesn't matter what your passion is or what you do, it just matters that you do it with love.

4 out of 5 stars Boy Hits Car.......2006-12-17

Released at a time when nu-metal reigned supreme, a time when if your record had copious amounts of rapping, down-tuned guitars played by guys in baggy jeans, and a "Parental Advisory" sticker it was guaranteed to go gold (at the very least), Boy Hits Car's self titled venture into the music world showed a complete disregard for the, then, current music scene. Drawing sounds from the likes of Jane's Addiction and Smashing Pumpkins, the band crafted an album that mixed the flair and aggression that was prevalent of the early 90's alternative rock scene and a very intelligent look at song writing. Nearing six years after its initial release, and my personal musical evolution, it still stands as a solid example of modern rock and roll. Granted, musically it does sound a tad dated, and compared with the stylings of more modern rock acts (My Chemical Romance comes to mind), their sound seems a bit primitive, but as a whole 'Boy Hits Car' is a simple and enjoyable record, with little to dislike.

5 out of 5 stars This album saved my life.......2006-06-21

This is an amazing record form start to finish. "Turning Inward" has always been my favorite... "I'm a Cloud" is a classic. "The Rebirth," "Man Without Skin," and "As I Watch the Sun..." These guys are more passionate about what they do than any other band, and you can hear it in the music.

BOY HITS CAR is STILL TOGETHER!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you want something different..........2006-05-17

Pick up this album. When this was released I was not into this type of music at all...I was into the heavier stuff (still am) but when a friend of mine played "As I Watch the Sun F*ck the Ocean" I went "HOLY $HIT THIS IS GOOD STUFF" and to my surprise, the instant I heard the first track 'Rebirth' I was hooked. Songs like 'I'm A Cloud' & 'A Letter From Prison' are standouts (but nothing beats the f*cking ocean song!) and by adding new elements like flutes and bongos into their punkish nu-rock formula Boy Hits Car stays fresh and fun throughout all eleven tracks. This is a worth while purchase that is sure to leave you satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars *** EXCELLENT *** .......2006-04-27

Excellent, simply the BEST album I've bought in a LONG time.

Album Description

Boy Hits Car are known for playing the sickest, loveliest, ugliest, prettiest, most beautiful, melodic, heartfelt music that the band dubs "Love Core". Their most recent masterpiece, "The Passage", is an intense journey from start to finish down the road of passion, loss, anger, and survival. From the adrenaline pumping pain of "The Sound Of A Breaking Heart" to the gut wrenching powerful ballad "Everything", to the culminating epic "The Passage", this is a collection of what rock 'n' roll once was and should always be.

5 out of 5 stars "Love Core".......2006-08-13

The editorial review pretty much nails this album. The use of the 12 string guitar is ever present in pretty much every song, some of which can be barely heard in the background music. This album has a terriffic balance of light and heavy. I'm a fan of Hard Rock and Metal, but can still stand a good, acoustic, well written, soft song. You can find a good balance beautifully meshing soft with hard. It is this that made me a fan of Boy Hits Car with their last album (Self-Titled) and as soon as I heard about this album I bought right away. If you have a myspace account; this would be a great band to look up.

5 out of 5 stars I wanna kill him...and then I'll know I'm alive.......2006-11-02

This album isn't as well-produced as the bands more recent work, and Cregg's vocals have made a huge improvement they recorded this back in 1998. 'My Animal' is still a great album. I love the way their early work doesn't foloow the verse-chorus-bridge song structure most typical in modern rock. You never know what's going to happen next. Songs like "In The Lateness of the Day" feature parts that are done with just bass and vocals. There's some beautiful slow-but-heavy riffs on this album.

Three of the songs from 'My Animal' ["I'm a Cloud" "A Letter From Prison" & "Benkei"] reappeared on the bands self-titled album, recorded with a different producer. The versions on this album sound a lot different, especially "Im a Cloud."

My favorite tracks are "Hope," "La Playa," & "My Animal"

5 out of 5 stars Great first outing.......2006-03-22

Boy Hits Car possesses an energy that I don't think is matched by any band out there now. This first album is a little more raw production wise but still great in its own means.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-05-21

I first saw BHC opening for Stone Temple Pilots In London
They are the most exciting original band around the CD has so many levels that you seem to hear more pain and beauty every time you hear it. Just buy this CD before its to late as BHC are no longer around. Probably the best band to never get the recognition they deserve.

5 out of 5 stars They better put out another album..........2003-10-18

If Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction) and Richard Patrick (Filter) raised Incubus in an English-speaking Middle-Eastern country... Boy Hits Car.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING CD.......2003-01-05

ok, I LOVE BOYHITSCAR, they are the best band in the world. I searched for this cd for about 6 months, and the day i found it online, i ordered it, and it is the most amazing thing i might have evr heard, the only thing betteris there second s/t cd, which is also amazing, get this cd and if you like art at all, you will love this cd, pax

3 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Wait.......2007-04-12

I really like Boyhitscar, but this album really just bombed for me. The songs all kind of sound the same and it gets really frustrating listening to him sing about lost-love over and over again. I'd pass on this one, but check out their previous stuff for sure.

5 out of 5 stars great third album.......2006-07-14

I don't really need to tell anyone who has heard BHC to check this album out because they are probably listening to it right now just as I am......

if you haven't heard boy hits car they can be (roughly) compared to bands like system of a down, tool, rage, nonpoint, pulse ultra ... this is a great album, favorite song right now is All the Love We Hold Inside

5 out of 5 stars The greatest live band on the face of this earth.......2006-07-11

This cd is an absolute must.....beautifully done, each song on the cd is buzzworthy.....and if you are one of the lucky people who gets to see them live, you would understand why we all love them so much....pick up a copy of this cd immediately or miss out

5 out of 5 stars More than a worthy follow up.......2006-06-27

It took five years for them to finally get this album out... and it was well worth the wait. It's definitely softer than their self-titled effort, but it's no less intense or passionate. Fans of the first album will definitely enjoy it. The Passage is also considderably more radio-friendly - and NOT in a bad way - which makes us further question why Wind-up dropped the best band they had. The sound on this album is more refined, there's a lot more use of the 12-string and vocal harmonies.

It's a great album from start to finish, a really solid effort. There is also a part two of the story from the self-titled album's jacket. My favorite tracks include "Tonight," "The Sound of a Breaking Heart," and "Beneath the Sea's Bed."

They have a very unique and identifiable sound, both fun to listen to and reflective of talent. These guys know how to write unique music, giving us all something new and refreshing!
