4 out of 5 stars should come with a health warning .......2006-05-16

first time i heard about the living things was on mtv2 brand spanking new music week and i first caught a glimpse of an band that would make an big impact on the way i percieve music
they had the edge of the stooges and the glam pop rock of T.REX
there single BOM BOM BOM being one of the catchiest singles this year no doubt,
but it's one of the best on the album..along with
"bombs below" "i owe" "god made hate"

the living things fuse together social/political/religous commentry, without preaching and i've long for a new band apart from the pop greenday's american idiot
to make an standing impression in the way they form their lyrics and this band have done both fused together ferocious glam punk rock and political lyrics too truly cermented an classic album and a band that will be spoken about for generations too come

classic artwork, reminds me of tyrannosaurus rex album
"my people were fair now their content to wear stars on their brows"

it's here and it could be the album of the year,

5 out of 5 stars This band could save rock n roll!!.......2006-05-12

This CD is brilliant. Live this band is even better. Take 69 Stones and slam then into Bush America and you have the cockiest protestors to ever turn it up to 11. The labum is pure salvation. You can't stop cranking it. Why aren't they huge????

3 out of 5 stars On the song "Bom, Bom, Bom".......2006-03-28

I Love this song. We need that sound come back! Bom,Bom,Bom has a T rex feel to it.Love It!!

4 out of 5 stars As close to perfect as you get..........2006-01-26

It's hard to imagine any danger being inserted back into today's sterile rock scene. Sure, there are tons of great artists out there but nothing that gets played on the radio. Do you honestly expect so-called alternative rock stations to play anything other then bland nu-metal acts that came along five years too late? If you answered yes, promptly slap yourself. And this album won't change that. It should but it won't while A&R reps are still soliciting radio stations for airplay.

That's not to speak against the quality of the Living Things as a band. In fact, they're quite talented. And they prove that on their album, Ahead of the Lions.

Beginning with "Bombs Below", the Things systematically assault the listener with a potent mix of punk, metal, and politics. From there it continues song-by-song, the band crafting their own brand of anarchy ranging from the AC/DC-gets-into-a-scuffle-with-the-Ramones anthem of "Bom Bom Bom" to the throat-shredding "On All Fours". It reaches a pinnacle with "March In Daylight", which utilizes one of the best recent hard rock riffs this side of H.I.M.'s "Wings of a Butterfly". Oddly enough, one of the oddities among the assorted chaos is "Mosters of Man". The song itself still maintains the hard-charging emotion of most of the former but it includes horns and distortion, causing it to sound like vintage Love & Rockets. That isn't an insult, either. It just stands out.

Unfortunately, for all the exciting music there is to be found, the album isn't perfect. The band stumbles when it tries to slow things down. Much like retro-rock revivalist brethren Jet, the band just can't write a good slow song. Or at least, the slow songs get buried beneath the noise and adrenaline of the heavier songs.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible album. No Talent........2006-01-12

Terrible. Bom bom bom is the only decent song, the rest is absolutely terrible. Absolutely no talent...the songs are terrible, watered down crap, no catchy guitar hooks at all, (the first song only has TWO notes). The drummer is terrible, he cant even get simple loops right, not to mention there are maybe two fills on the whole damn album. DONT waste your money. If you want to hear classic rock-revival music, listen to silvertide. The absolutley disgusting dispicable crap "the living things" puts out isnt worth the plastic its burned into. The sad thing is MTV will probably give this terrible band hours of airplay.

5 out of 5 stars Support artistic dissent.......2006-04-10

So far I've only heard one song from this album, on a community radio station - KGNU in Boulder/Denver (it streams online for people who want to hear what an incredible world of music non-commercial radio can provide). The song was "Bombs Below," and I appreciated what they had to say. I regularly hear all sorts of thoughtful music from around the world on community radio and could never afford to buy the CDs of all the artists I enjoy, but what convinced me to order this particular CD was an article on them in the "Boulder Weekly" newspaper that noted that the lead-singer, Lillian Berlin, "was left with cracked ribs and a concussion, the result of a beating he received when some Dallas concert-goers took exception to his criticisms of President Bush during a concert earlier that evening. Berlin's attackers punctuated their assault by firing a pistol right next to the singer's head." Due to the corporatist media, there's an extremely belligerent, misinformed and jingoist segment of our population. Thankfully it's a minority; and thankfully, there are groups like "Living Things" who are challenging the thoughts of violent and authoritarian elements of our society. Let's hope more people support the work of dissident artists who are making an effort to undercut our country's superiority complex and militarism.
People who appreciate the political stance of "Living Things" may also want to check out the punk rock group "Propagandhi," and the documentary on the military industrial complex, "Why We Fight."

4 out of 5 stars In your face rhetoric from guys that SHOULD matter to you........2005-10-29

If you are to the "left" you should pick up this album for the lyrics alone. If you are anywhere else, but you are mature enough to appreciate good music, you should still pick it up. Otherwise, dont bother.

These guys are truely putting the music in your face. They send a wall of sound at you that sometimes is a little hard to swallow untill you take it a time or two. The fact of the matter is, this band has some real potential to put out politically driven albums the likes of which havent been seen in probably 30 years or so. Right now they still seem like they are trying to get their heads around what their sound really is. Sometimes they break into strait up rock riffs and others they sound like they are about to play a mindless pop punk song (thankfully they always save those).

Potential asside, the album does take a listen or two, outside of "Bom Bom Bom," to really get comfy with. Its very agressive and takes a bit of getting use to. Once it starts falling into place it becomes extreamly enjoyable.

If you are looking for a breath of fresh air, this band is flat out for you.

      Album Description

The album, recorded with famed producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Pixies) is a hard-hitting, political power-force; relentless in delivering its message, and sharp on its observations with low, scuzzy beats reminiscent of early Ramones, and The Rolling Stones. Drawing on political frustrations, personal struggles and a wealth of experiences, such as Lillian being shot at twice after a show in Dallas, Texas, the brothers have produced a raw, up front, antagonistic record reflecting the mood of post 9/11 Bush-era America. Surviving major label incompetence which saw, (after moving release dates, and canceling tours last minute) the band and label part ways, leaving the album shelved indefinitely; the album is finally being brought to light with the help of Q Prime Management (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Muse), the US label Jive Records and Red Ink in the UK. Already garnering rave notices Stateside, 'Ahead of the Lions' looks to replicate that success here, and includes the soon to be massive 'Bom Bom Bom' (released Monday 20th Feb). Living Things will be playing UK dates around the single & album release. Red Ink. 2006
