When listening to the Shaggs (the Wiggin sisters--Dorothy on lead guitar and vocals, Betty on rhythm guitar and vocals, Helen on drums), one needs to jettison conventional notions of song structure, what is "in tune" or not, even what constitutes suitable subject matter for a pop song ("My Pal Foot Foot," "Who Are Parents?"). Originally issued on a small, dodgy label in 1969, the guileless sounds of
Philosophy cast a long shadow nonetheless; the group was one of Frank Zappa's favorites and their music inspired rock primitivists Beat Happening as well as sublime archivists NRBQ and Yo La Tengo. On
Philosophy, the teenaged sisters' delirious, playfully constructed music has everything you least expect: loopy polyrhythms that follow no external law, off-kilter singing conducted in unison that sounds like the hit parade broadcast from Jupiter, and bizarre, elementary-school guitar playing. Best enjoyed in small doses, this enchanting, accidental music approximates the highly personal charms of so-called "outsider" visual art. To paraphrase a saccharine song of yore, the Shaggs' music is very beautiful--in its own way.

Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03
I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!
just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09
loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.
Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06
Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.
Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04
I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.
Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05
Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

Things I wonder.......2007-02-08
Cheers to the most discordant pop you'll ever listen to..."There are many things I wonder, There are many things I don't, It seems as though the things I wonder most, Are the things I never find out..." A group of sisters that performed for only several years, almost exclusively in the local town hall and/or nursing home! Their father used his savings to record their album, and 900 of the original 1000 copies disappeared with the producer. Sets the stage for a strange and melancholy journey into family dynamics...
My Mind Reels.......2007-01-27
the only way to describe this is the feeling you get after you just got hit in the head and you don't know what is going, the vast confusion perfectly descibes this. listen to a sample and everything you know about music and have learned in put in a garbage disposal and mixed up till you don't remember what music is for the time being. this is also probably the most surreal thing ive ever listened to also. its actually very creepy if you look at the right way. my feelings for this 'album' are somewhat confusing also, first i find it absurd and hilarious that some people think it is 'beautiful' and it goes to show that there is someone to defend everything, then on the other hand i feel like it takes a very very strange group to come up with this and i don't think ive ever heard anything quite like it. it's like their father played music all the time till they were 3, then locked them in a cave for about 14 years then stuck them in a recording studio and asked them to play from memory. its like that. my mind still feels likes its going to explode everytime i hear this because this is actual ANTI music, when asked to rate this i couldn't possibly. my real question is is how did these girls get to record this? how did someone press this to vinyl with a straight face? who heard this in the recording studio and though, OH YEAH this will be a a top ten hit. Then again this was the 60s, which brings me to another point, the only way you could of released this and the only way you could of listened and enjoyed this is through drug use.
I like it.......2007-01-23
An interesting album, though it's probably best in small doses. Certainly a one-of-a-kind thing. Although to some extent it does just sound like some kids banging out music, for brief moments everything comes together and it sounds catchy and oftentimes remarkably like music years ahead of it's time. At many moments the instrumental aspect sounds almost exactly like some basic form of punk music. Worth a listen.
It is truly bad.......2007-01-10
It is really painful to listen to, if you have any ear for music whatsoever. It's also interesting, it's hard to believe anyone could be this bad. I've only ever listened to it once, all the way through, and that was pretty difficult, but it has a place in my car, in case I'm falling asleep at the wheel and I don't have time to pull over for a nap. There's no way anyone could fall asleep to this, let's see, do I want to call it, music? No, it is not really music in any real sense, these are disconnected, disjointed, dysharmonious, dysrhythmic sounds made with musical instruments. I recommend this cd to 1) people who have any doubt that it was the worst rock n roll album ever, hearing is truly believing 2) bartenders and bouncers who have to clear out large groups of people, and have access to a powerful sound system 3) music teachers, instructors who need to demonstrate the importance of professional music lessons, 4) collectors of the bad, the tasteless, the defective, and 5) free jazz and postmodern symphonic music fans (see if they can tell the difference).
They SUCK!!.......2006-12-24
I just couldn't contain my laughter. My nephew and I were busting a gut when listening to My Pal Foot Foot.

Intimate with Larmore.......2005-03-22
The CD or DVD for this concert will show the fine art of recital and Larmore sure knows how to give a good one! She and Palloc build to a wonderful payoff and during the way we get to see what a versatile, talented, and smart performer Larmore is. She totally understands Weill and gives a heartbreaking rendition of "Je ne t'aime pas" - I get chills everytime I hear it. The same for Quilters "Love's Philosophy".
Fans of La Larmore will not be let down. Those not familiar with this great Mezzo will understand what all the fuss is about. Brava Jennifer! Keep the great music coming.

Sung Like This, They Should Stay Remembered.......2005-09-30
Commenting last June on CDs featuring the tenor, Kenny Baker, I wrote that his might be the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the 20th century. My comparison included a lot of fine tenors, but I hadn't heard John Aler. Recently, I have been listening to him as Jupiter in Handel's SEMELE, then as Nadir in Bizet's PEARL FISHERS, and more recently as the soloist for this album. Kenny Baker's voice is pure, limpid, naturally musical throughout his range. The lower part of Aler's range has less music, but the upper part is richer than Baker's, and the whole is tremendously exciting. Nowhere is his voice lovelier than in the first song on this CD, "I Hear You Calling Me." Composed circa 1903, overflowing with love and longing, it became the immensely popular signature-piece in the 1920s and '30s of the Irish tenor, John McCormack. (Who, with less primitive technology, might well have provided the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the century.)
I found some of the Aler collection quite familiar, others new and highly attractive (where have they been all my life?), and others that are lifted above the ordinary more by the singer's voice and art than by intrinsic merit. The songs are predominantly art or concert songs, composed mostly in the late 19th or early 20th century. Elegant, highly romantic, often ambitious, sometimes sentimental, popular in their time with lovers of semi-classical music, and often performed in concerts by leading singers of the day. Their lyrics include the poetry of Joyce Kilmer, Robert Herrick, Rabindranath Tagore, Shelley, Poe, Yeats, Eugene Field, and Sydney Lanier.
Did Aler get the idea for this CD from the fine baritone Thomas Hampson's CD, "An Old Song Resung"? Hampson's CD (unfortunately out of print), came out in 1990; Aler's, in 1995. The songs in both collections might well have been sung to similar audiences at similar concerts by similar singers. Still, the two CDs have only two works in common: - "Do Not Go, My Love," composed by Richard Hageman in 1917, and "When I Have Sung My Songs," by Ernest Charles in 1934. Both songs are superb, and both singers do them beautifully. I would give Aler a slight edge on the first; Hampson, on the second.
