Michael Hutchence took a break from his day job as INXS's libidinous lead singer in 1995 to record his first solo album. He died a tabloid-exploited death in 1997, and a few years later, Black Grape producer Danny Saber and ex-Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill picked up the recordings and finished the songs. So what happens when these producers take it upon themselves to speak for the dead? They give this album the Black Grape treatment by dipping the ballads and funk-pop tracks in multiple layers of trippy, reverberating keyboards and wah-wah guitars. When the effects work, such as on "Let Me Show You" and "Get On the Inside," Hutchence's personality is well matched to the soundscapes, igniting with the same fire Gill once lent to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other times, they cut too close to the tired bones of the chemically enhanced post-Manchester sound, robbing Hutchence of his intense sensuality. Obviously, the singer and his producers did not intend for this to be his musical epitaph, but such as it is, the album is too slick and commercially crass. It's hard to avoid foreshadowed readings of songs like "Don't Save Me from Myself" and "Possibilities," where he sings, "If you told me nothing's perfect / Hearts are broken, nothing's free / I could show you why it's worth it / That the way that it's meant to be." This second-rate Achtung, Baby will get more attention than it deserves because Hutchence is dead. It would have been a much more fitting tribute to the singer's legacy if the producers had allowed fans to simply hear the full power of his voice, unmasked by their own. --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko UK Import : BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-12

Just bought this 2 CD import item. Was it costly? Sure: approx. $25. BUT, given that I nearly paid $20 for the US version which DOES NOT include the first CD, it was well worth it.
Delivery: SURPRISINGLY SUPER-FAST by USPS (it only took two or three days standard shipping)
Condition: Still wrapped in plastic.
Music: *tee hee* If you watched the movie, then you know what the music will sound like: it's the movie soundtrack (you know, the awesome soundtrack that both reminds the viewer of the 80's and also creates a haunting backdrop for the movie's themes). Typically here in the US that means only one or two of the good songs and the rest is the score. The UK version? ALL of the good songs and the entire score (that's why it's 2 discs).
Bad part? Not offered in US retail stores (i.e. you can only buy this online or in an Import CD store.

It's here, two versions of Mad World by Michael Andrews, lovely piano intro and Neil Young type vocals. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars It took 'em long enough, but it was worth the wait!.......2006-11-06

My friends and I have been waiting for this for years--finally, the real 80's music soundtrack for Donnie Darko, arguably one of the best soundtracks out there!

Probably the only negative comment I have is that they included the music from the motivational videos, something that I could have done without.

Thank you for putting this soundtrack out!!

4 out of 5 stars Donhnie Darko Import Soundtrack well done.......2006-08-24

The import edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack is two discs. One is the actual pop songs, and some classical works, which are all very good and includes the remake of Tears for Fears "Mad World." The second disc is the instrumental score, with two versions of "Mad World," included as well. The instrumental score is very dark and omenous, and the two disc set is a nice collectible piece of music that I highly reccommend. The price is a bit high, at over $30, but if you are any type of a fan of the movie, or a soundtrack collector, this album is for you.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-08-10

i wish i could have bought just disc one... because disc two is mostly the instrumental stuff, which is excellent, but i don't really plan on listening to it over and over. disc one is good, although there are a few songs i skip through.

5 out of 5 stars loved it.......2007-04-20

I really loved this album, because it was what Michael was going for. It wasn't suppose to sound like INXS. I only wish that he could of done a solo tour that would make it even better.

4 out of 5 stars Some Top Notch Tracks.......2007-04-10

Right off the bat, the following tracks are gems:

- Flesh and Blood
- Possibilities
- Slide Away

Definitely worth a purchase for these tracks alone.

5 out of 5 stars INXS fans must have this.......2006-10-20

The bittersweet factor of this album is enormous. Hutchence's persona, talent, and passion are so evident in all of the music he participated in. It is hard not to feel deep regret for him and his fans who are left to wonder what could have been. This solo album is a must for fans of INXS and especially for anybody who admires Hutchence's artistry. Not as pop sounding as some of INXS albums, but a definite solo territory where Hutchence was as might be expected, exploring his own darker reality at the time. That doesn't mean the whole album is dark but even if it was upbeat it would be darkened by the fact of it being his last recordings. I have read reviews that the production of the music was overdone but I didn't notice this particularly. What I notice more is that he along with any great artist taps into another world that was his own and which draws you in to experience it. I enjoy the album because it is the last chance to get inside the mind of a great artist who deserves a great legacy. Keep him alive.

3 out of 5 stars Oh the "Possibilities"........2006-08-21

Let me start by saying I like it. However this is an album that was unfinished at the time Michael died, and therefore was finished by others, based on hopefully what they thought he wanted in the final product. We'll never know if this disc would have been different had Michael not passed, but what can you do. It's still good like I said. Many songs are very well done, and it may peak at the end, when Bono sings with Michael on "Slide Away". Of course, it's nearly impossible not to compare this with the music of INXS. When I do that I feel this is as good as one of their lesser albums, which they had few of. I mean, this is not the caliber of "Listen Like Thieves" or "Welcome To Wherever You Are". In the end there's many ways to view this album, I guess the best way is to love the songs, most of which meet expectations, and be happy Michael had a great life, and made such wonderful music for years.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent But have tissues handy and be Prepared to cry..!! .......2006-05-15

I was a Big Fan of Inxs and of Michael. "I Know nothing about the people I have touched" in possibilities is so touching and is one of the best songs on the album. I was too young to go out and actively support the band when they were here but now I am reliving the days. It really is turning into a right of passage for teenagers here today in Aus. Still today, If you are just passing a radio and a Inxs song is blaring ever person that you can see is either screaming along with them or looking sad and mournful murmuring the words to themselves.
I have started from their early works and have finished up with Michaels album. I think it is absolute brilliance and the world music industry has really lost a great talent. But if you are setting out on the Inxs voyage beware you really do have to go into Michael's album knowing it is not an Inxs album! It is Michaels and therefore is in a different category/ style. It does obviously have Michaels flare and talent demonstrated in Inxs and therefore does have some undertones of INXS in it but that's it for comparison. I love this deep moody album and I often play it before I go to bed but be careful because if you are a big hutch fan it really will make you cry if you listen to the lyrics to closely.
Although I do like Gill's work I think Bono's style in finishing up unlucky song number 13 Slide Away really is more fitting. Michael did work with Gill on most of the pieces but Bono's style lets you really hear Michael's raw sensual vocals allot more which Is what I really love.
It seems like a very personal album and hears more like diary entries that have been excellently mastered into songs.
This Album is defiantly on my top three but you do have to be warned I think it is a cd that if you do start playing religiously it will take you back to tears again screaming "why Michael? Why? all over again. If you are not a great Michael fan and you are just in it for the music it makes a great heavy soul sound but in the style of the early 90's tune. Although some songs have that great basic instrumentals sound under Michaels vocals which could easily be mistaken for being recorded today.
Miss you Michael.

4 out of 5 stars Die Hard Fans Must Have This Album.......2007-05-24

If you are a die-hard fan of the old INXS fronted by Michael Hutchence, then you need this album. It's a bit (just a bit) of a departure from his normal INXS stuff, but still absolutely fantastic. You can almost feel his emotion in "Ghost of the Year."

This is a great album, the songs are fantastic, it will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2006-04-13

This album should have done much better that it did back in the 80's. This album has such variation and emotion. It's a shame we can't hear more from such a talented individual.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !!.......2005-09-06

As some may say, it is a shame that we won't be able to hear some more of this.

I remember that there was a video at MTV at that time, but I cannot remember which song were they promoting, but I can asure you, that any song of this album will be well received, either radio or video, excellent album, from the begining until the end.

Obviously, you need to be an INXS fan to like, or either, if you like the new electric sound that now you may hear it every where, you will also like it.

It took a lot to find this one, if you have a chance to buy it, do not waste it, take it and buy it. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars 1989's BEST ALBUM.......2005-08-23

I can't believe that I never heard this album till 16 years after it's release. You owe it to yourself to give it a listen. Definately some of Michael Hutchence best vocal work. The album is great from start to finish but really shines in the haunting "Concrete" and "Monday Night By Satellite". It is truly a shame we won't get to hear anymore of this collaboration.

5 out of 5 stars one of the most underrated albums of 1989.......2004-12-12

The pairing of Michael Hutchence and fellow-Australian Ollie Olsen produced one of the best albums of the 80's, in my estimation. It was the best of INXS, with an edge -- and with better production. The three singles from the album, 'Sometimes' (my fave), 'Way of the World,' and 'Ghost of the Year' (which probably had the best public response) were all written by Ollie, but would never have reached our ears if not for Hutchence's incredible voice.

This album directly followed the INXS album 'Kick' and paired these two friends, who had done some music for films during the 80's. While it didn't do well in the charts, this is one of those albums where every single song is good.

If you're a fan of INXS, you'll love this album, plain and simple.

5 out of 5 stars X marks the spot.......2007-01-04

Following the mighty KICK, INXS had a lot to prove and whilst this isn't their strongest album (I would vote "Welcome to wherever you are" for that honour), it does show a band who worked superbly well as a unit and whose songwriting capabilities were incredible.

There's no filler and some of the tracks - especially "The Stairs" and "By My Side" - should be considered classics.

A cracking album, by a band at the top of their form, this is surely an essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Should Be a Classic.......2006-01-04

On the heels of Kick one can only imagine the pressure to keep that momentum rolling and as usual INXS more than met the challenge. I stated in another review that although I thought Kick was a decent record, was just a bit too stripped down for my liking. I understood why it was so popular and was very happy to see INXS get the accolades they long deserved but I was hoping for a larger sound. Enter "X". They took everything good about Kick and made the sound larger with great layers of synths and powerful guitar chords.
In my mind INXS has not made a bad record. Very few bands can make that claim. X is a perfect example of a great band on top of the world not sitting on their success and just going through the motions. They made an even better record than the one that made them chart-toppers. From the first few seconds of "Suicide Blonde" I could tell that this was going to be a disc that stays in the car changer for good. This record is overflowing with great melodies, pulsing tempos and outstanding production. It is obvious why Chris Thomas won a Brit award for his work on this record.

Some of the best tunes on this disc are Suicide Blonde, The Stairs, Faith in Each Other, Lately and Who Pays the Price. This remastered cd also has some great unreleased material on them that are the demos that Andrew Fariss recorded of Salvation Jane and Who Pays the Price.

Any fan of the more alternative side of pop/rock can not go wrong with this album. It is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars inxs at their best.......2005-11-22

I love this album as much as I like their "Kick" album. I usually skip "who pays the price", "I'm on my way" and sometimes "Hear that sound". But overall this is an inspirational album. I have actually kept this cd in my walkman for a whole month and not removed it at all. I myself am a r&b/jazz/dance cat and I grew up listening to all kinds of music. Its unfortunate Michael Hutchence is no longer with us. He was talented and had a great voice. Why didn't he take his own advice and "Live baby Live". That's my only question. I guess his bandmates will do just what he didn't. Press on guys Press on.

4 out of 5 stars X-cellent INXS.......2005-09-24

INXS were coming off a massive high before this album got underway. "Kick" was one of the biggest albums of the year, they had their first American number one single and had polished off a world tour that was successful beyond their wildest dreams. The demands on the band weighed in heavy - everything had to be bigger and more amazing than before. It made "X" an album that couldn't possibly live up to anyone's expectations.

The band was also obviously aware of their position. Many of the songs on "X" sound over-thought out. Only the initial single sounds at all spontaneous, with Charlie Musselwhite's killer harmonica riff elevating "Suicide Blonde" to a classic. And the catchy "doo doo doo" chorus on "Disappear" made that song a worthy single as well. But then the songs begin to lose steam. "Bitter Tears" and "By My Side" hold up the best, but the "Kick" factor is literally not there.

That having been said, "X" is still a very satisfying listen. Had this been that album before "Kick" and after "Listen Like Thieves," I doubt it would get the bad rap it often gets. They explored some funky sounds here ("Bitter Tears" and "Who Pays The Price") that would have also made strong singles. Micael Hutchence is one of rock's all time great frontmen, and I've always been a sucker for Kirk Pengilly's sax riffs. While this would not be my first choice for an INXS purchase, I still recommend "X" to fans of the band's style of rock.

5 out of 5 stars Great INXS CD.......2005-07-28

The remastered version of X is a great CD by the Australian rock band INXS. All of the songs are great, and some seem to express feelings of dissatisfaction and a hope for change. The two best songs here are "Disappear" and "Bitter Tears." Get this CD as soon as you can.

5 out of 5 stars Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10

As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I own........2003-11-04

I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.

3 out of 5 stars Classical classics.......2002-11-12

The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2002-08-27

If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.

3 out of 5 stars Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23

Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sample of the album and what to expect........1999-11-09

This is a great sample of Michael's solo album. If you like the two new songs from this single CD then you'll probably enjoy the entire album. Michaels lyrics are deep and so is the music.

    5 out of 5 stars Michael Hutchence.......2000-09-04

I have long hesitated to buy this CD due the sudden and sad loss of Michael. I have seen it in a local music store several times. I finally bought today and have listened to it over and over, actually to the point of tears. It seems "shell like". Some the "groove" that made Michael the star of INXS was there, but the sadness was overwhelming. What a great loss!!! If he wasn't gone it would be easier to appreciate this CD more, but if you ever liked any of Hutch's music or his voice, this is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Sad and Chilling last memory of Michael.......2000-06-28

When I first listened to this Cd,it bothered me so much that I had to turn it off. Here is a man, crying out for help through his lyrics and nobody picked up on it!

This Cd is not a popular one in my Cd player but I have it to remember Michael!

    You are missed,Hutch!
