4 out of 5 stars A good collection.......2007-05-14

Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.

5 out of 5 stars A Musician of Great Dignity and Style.......2005-07-27

Sir Thomas Allen is one of the enduring baritones who has been able to move throughout the operatic repertoire and the recital stage with intelligence, informed characterization, and immaculate musicianship. To have a recording of some of the roles he has inhabited at this point in his career is a gift (this CD was recorded in 2003). To have the added challenge of retaining the stature of the roles while sung in English translations at the request of Chandos is a credit to his abilities and communicative powers.

English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!

For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05

5 out of 5 stars Passed the "Opera in English" test with flying colors........2005-07-04

For me, the test here was Figaro's Cavatina, from Rossini's Barber of Seville - sung in English, as is this entire compilation of 14 operatic favorites, sung by baritone Sir Thomas Allen. Could he pull it off? Could Chandos pull it off? The answer is an unequivocal, unqualified yes! The secret in singing classics in English, that were written and scored in another language, is in three things: pacing, vocal agility and appreciation for "fit", and what greater test for tongue and timing than Figaro? When you listen to this one song, you will understand why Chandos and its benefactor, Sir Peter Moores have such a passion for their Opera in English series. Sir Allen's voice is a matured unmistakably settled baritone voice that contains a lifetime's worth of understanding of the music and words he imparts through his magnificent delivery. For example, when he sings, Tchaikovsky's "You have my love and devotion" from The Queen of Spades, he delivers a smooth and deeply emotional rendition that lacks nothing in translation. Wagner's "Turning my gaze upon this proud assembly", from Tannhäuser is another example of how fine, full orchestration behind a seasoned voice that waxes eloquent with every phrase, can create a mood of relaxed familiarity with word and music, that may be lacking when sung in another tongue. Great Operatic Arias, serves up a smorgasbord of tunes that are familiar, made more so by the care and attention given to creating a place for the Opera in English series in every home library. The mood here is romantic, relaxed and with few exceptions consistent throughout. If you haven't heard Opera in English, this might be a good way to start, given the fact that the listener gets to sample how different composers might sound in other than German, Italian or French. You might be surprised to discover that when done with care, as is obviously the case here, the sound is about as good as it gets. As an added bonus, the booklet that comes with the CD is full of pictures, libretto in English, and biography that gives us a good insight into history of the singer and his identifying rolls.

3 out of 5 stars Ho Hum.......2007-06-18

Not their best cd but there are at least 3 songs on it I like. Not worth it for me to have bought the cd though which is why I gave it only 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Bands Around Right Now........2006-08-30

I first heard of Aloha when one of my roommates bought this CD at a local record store because it was compared to Radiohead (I guess I kinda see the comparison), and the first couple times I heard it I thought it was pretty darn good. It was about the fourth or fifth time that I completely fell in love with this CD. It's been in pretty constant rotation ever since. I've purchased all of their CDs (except their debut EP) and while they are all really good (particularly "Sugar"), none of them seem to possess the same magic as this wonderful release.

Some personal favorite songs of mine are the openning "All The Wars" with its rocking drum intro, neat guitar line, and catchy vocal melody. "You've Escaped" is a beautiful ballad and "Boys in the Bathtub" just rocks so hard. I love that riff in 7/8 that is featured so prominantly on that song. Also, "I Don't Know What Else To Do" is a really cool song with a simple but effective bass groove and weird retro-60's keyboard parts in the chorus. Those songs particularly stand out to me, but IMHO there is not a bad song on this album. It's a winner from beginning to end.

If I had to catagorize this band, I would start by referencing 70's prog rock (think Yes, Genesis, King Crimson) but much more warmer and intimate. They got the chops, but they don't let them get in the way of emotional expression and setting a relaxing mood. There is also some 60's pop (Beatles, Beach Boys) and 90's post-rock (Tortoise). Everyone in the band is obviously very virtuistic at their respective instruments, yet they don't let their egos get in the way of songcraft. Also, I think Tony's voice is wonderful. Someone he reminds me quite a bit of (yet I've never seen this comparison mentioned before) is Adrian Belew from the 80's incarnation of King Crimson. Take Adrian Belew, add a dash of Jeff Buckley, and maybe a little (just a little) Thom Yorke and you'd have a pretty good idea of his voice.

I also had the pleasure of seeing them live in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, and let me tell you... these guys put on an AMAZING live show. Very energetic and engaging. I feel that this band is fated to explode pretty soon. Everyone that I play this CD for seems to really like it. It's only a matter of time before the small fanbase that they have right now spreads the word to enough people and these guys become huge (at lease huge enough to bring more than ~200 people to a show in Chicago). Bottom line, if you haven't heard this amazing release yet, do yourself the favor and pick it up (especially for the low price Amazon is selling it for). You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars One of Ohio's best.......2005-11-14

There has been a lot of good music from Ohio in the past few years (The Six Parts Seven, Party of Helicopters, The Black Keys, Coffinberry, Necropolis, The Sun) and Aloha is definitely one of my favorites. I Only have this record, but I love what I have heard from "Sugar" as well. Bottom line: Go see the live show. I saw them at the Knitting Factory in NYC a couple of months ago and it was cosmic. Seriously, they need to play on the same bill as The Six Parts Seven and Explosions in the Sky. If that were to happen, then i could die a happy man.

5 out of 5 stars criminally underrated!.......2005-06-15

Not since The Shins has a band referenced so many brilliant bands of the past + present (in Aloha's case: ELO, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elton John (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road/Madman Across the Water), Yes, Talk Talk, Tortoise + Radiohead) while sounding entirely unique. Dreamy, yet urgent - listening to Here Comes Everyone, one can't help but feel nostalgic for their childhood, road trips, and lost love, while being instilled with a passion to keep making memories.

This album has so many hooks you'll be humming them for days. Much more Rock/Pop (at times math-rock/prog rock) oriented than their previous efforts, yet Aloha doesn't give up their complex arrangements. On the contrary, these songs have levels of tracks and nuances that you'll be discovering even after a dozen listens. Cavallario's vocals are at their strongest referencing the vocal stylings and range of Thom Yorke, Jeff Buckley, and Carl Newman from New Pornographers. His guitar playing has reached new levels of skill + confidence as he solos on a handful of the songs. Cale Parks and T.J. Lipple's percussion arrangements are nothing short of brilliant. Matthew Gengler's bass playing reminds me of Radiohead's Colin Greenwood - beautiful, melodic jazz-oriented bass-lines that at times are even minimal/sparse to let other parts of the song shine through.

Here Comes Everyone needs to be heard. It would be a shame for it to go the way of Talk Talk's Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden. Both groundbreaking/brilliant records that went unlistened to for years. This record will stand the test of time and will be referenced for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Hugging's not a dance move, punching's not allowed.......2005-06-05

I live in FLA, but I'm originally from Altoona, PA. Some friends knew I was from Altoona and asked if I was aware of Aloha, I said no, borrowed the cd and put it on my pc.
Thinking that any music from Altoona just wouldn't satisfy, I only passively listened to it. After a couple weeks, I run into the friends again, and they want to know what I thought of Aloha. Admittedly I knew nothing, but they felt it their duty to impress upon me that I needed to listen to it.
It's been about five months now, the cd is always in my rotation. Songs that I didn't like early on (Thermostat, and Perry Como) are now favorites, meanwhile it's hard not to hear enough of Summer Away, or Boys in the Bathtub.
I can't describe the music, and do so accurately, sometimes you just have to take the chance and dive in folks. It didn't capture the mood of the Altoona I grew up in (maybe if they would have used the words "yinz" or referred to "Sheetz"), but that wasn't their point.
I couldn't get the Amazon samples to play, but if you want to listen look up the guys on the polyvinyl site, aloha music, or if you can find them on myspace/aloha they'll have some samples there.
And if you're in Aloha, I have a request, do you think you could ask Jakob at Blumpy to finish the You've Escaped vid? Thanks and see "yinz" guys the next time you're in FLA.
