Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show.

The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.

From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted.......2006-11-06

I saw the making of the CD on TV. The cast does a great job. I have the CD in my car stereo and listen to it often.

5 out of 5 stars I Want to be a producer.......2006-03-06

This recording is great! I saw the play in november and loved the music. I bought the CD a little later and i am still listing to it. The cast are all great singers and did a great job. The songs are witty and catchy and never get old. You should listin to this.(Warning:See the movie or the play before you listin to this, you might hate it if you've have not.)

5 out of 5 stars Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13

While I'll abmit that Nazi regemes and Hitler are probably some of the least funny thing in the world...i have to admit that the words to Springtime for Hitler are hilarious, just like the rest of the songs on this cast recording.

While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.

As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!

I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.

5 out of 5 stars Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12

My theatre group went to New York two years ago, adn we did a marathon 4 shows in 3 days. Each show got progressively better, finally culminating in seeing Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick's final performance of "The Producers." I have been a fan of Brooks' since I saw "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" 5 years ago. Naturally, I was beyond excited to see the show he made of his most brilliant film.

I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.

Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.

Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.

5 out of 5 stars it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason!.......2005-12-08

This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!

So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

4 out of 5 stars "Flaunt It" if you got it........2006-11-10

It's been over a decade since I last owned this album, but it had the same impact now as it did then.
Each song has that unique electronica 'zap' from one track to the next. The bridges between the songs are pretty humourous as well.
From the first track ("Love Missile F-111") to the last ("She's My Man"), Sigue Sigue Sputnik serves up a dish that any fan of Cyberpunk, Anime, comic-book superheroes, and over-sexed media can enjoy over and over.
I give it four stars, especially for the tracks "Teenage Thunder", "Sex-Bomb-Boogie", "21st Century Boy", and "Massive Retaliation".
It's an ultra-chic thrill ride.

5 out of 5 stars FULL THROTTLE SYNTH ROCK.......2003-05-18

This is a synth fest set to driving and bubbling beats celebrating technology, computer games and power politics, executed with plenty of gusto and energy. Love Missile is thunderous and energetic with lots of echo, unexpected samples and galloping synths, while Atari Baby is slower and atmospheric, reminding me of Alan Vega's psychobilly excursions. Rockit Miss USA is catchy power pop, Massive Retaliation is a charming mix of beats and samples and Teenage Thunder sounds like Suicide at its most hypnotic and is full of quotes like "money makes the world go round." She's My Man starts with a cheeky quote from the advertising copy for a certain hair gel. In its innovative use of synthesizer Flaunt It is on a par with Sparks' great masterpiece No. 1 In Heaven or Alan Vega's Collision Drive. Giorgo Moroder's talent was here applied to create a stirring, over-the-top post-modern rock statement. I still love it after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Sputnik Corporation.......2003-02-02

One of the weirdest and most exciting novelty albums I ever encountered came out in 1986 in Britain and didn't make its way to the states till the following year. Looking at it, I see that it was way ahead of its time in its techno-punk hybrid, random sampling, and a product of the computer and technology-obsessed 1980's.

"Love Missile F1-11" opens with Martin Degville crying out "I Wanna Be A Star" before the signature Sputnik sound, a backbeat of quick-paced Generation X-ish technodisco punctuated by an electropump bass, combined with sliding punk guitar, computerizing samples of Beethoven's 9th, the William Tell overture, Japanese vocals, Ms. Pacman dying, distorted effects. This song featured in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. A few lines condemn a vision of Reagan's America: "U.S. bombs floating overhead." and "multi-millions still unfed.

"Atari Baby" would be Sputnik's equivalent of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face", a quiet song with a running percussive beat and the usual effects, with some female vocalists going "d-d-d-d..aah aah".

"Sex Bomb Boogie" is as crazy as "Love Missile", opening with that piercing space guitar and the pounding technodisco. There are a few weird effects but not as much as its cousin. It ends with a girl going, "Mmm, that was fantastic!" Which it was.

"Rockit Miss USA" has imitated effects of Dirty Harry, "Go ahead, make my day", someone saying "Get away from the gun!" and a black guy asking subway shooter Bernard Goetz for $5.00. There's a constant anti-gun theme going on here and a Cold War one as well. On one occasion one hears "Reagan rocks my baby" another time, "Moscow rocks my baby."

"21st Century Boy" opens with Bach's Fugue before a computerized voice announces: "From the 21st century, we present the next generation of rock and roll, starring... [the names of the band members]" and a technobeat rivalling "Love Missile". Much of the lyrics are a description what would be seen in the future, "satellite TV, laser beams, Chinese-speaking split-TVs,..etc." The term "Elvis 1990" accurately describes the sound. "I am the ultimate product" is what Sputnik would be for the music of their world.

"Massive Retaliation" samples a bit from Beethoven's Fifth." the repeated refrain "Shut up" a booming drum beat, and words that don't add up to any kind of theme: "Stimulation, baby/inspiration, baby" finishing up with "Moscow hit back" or "Bangkok hit back." Nothing about nuclear war here.

By the last two songs, the same crazy sound is there, which is fine, except that there's nothing unique to pick out.

Oh, inbetween each song are paid commercials for certain products, such as Tempo Magazine, Network 21, Studio Line of Loreal, the Sputnik Corporation. They're brief snippets, but add to the feeling of music and technology for the 21st century.

I envision a metropolis embodying concepts from Blade-Runner or William Gibson with this kind of music. 17 years after its release, it still rocks out.

3 out of 5 stars Novel.......2001-05-24

I was ten when this came out, so I briefly caught the hype that surrounded the band at the time (they took great delight in being image-led, although they seem to regret that nowadays). It took me until recently to buy the actual album itself, and it's pretty much as I expected - ZZ Top with lots of samples, but not nearly as good. The novelty carries it along for a while, and the whole thing is so ludicrously dated as to be charming, but it's not the kind of thing I imagine myself listening to a lot. The main problem is that all the songs are more or less the same - a weedy electronic rock'n'roll bassline with echoey, Presley-style vocals, except for 'Atari Baby' which is a ballad and consists of the lead singer singing 'Atari Baby' repeatedly over some chords - but it's not loud enough of fast enough to make it work as it did for, say, Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Whether it's the band or the production, it sounds very weak and thin. The production itself is a snapshot of what was trendy in 1986, and it's full of pitch-shifted vocals, gated reverb, stuttery samples, bits that go backwards, and snippets from films and stuff. This gets annoying, and gets in the way of the songs which, if played 'straight', might actually have been quite good.

5 out of 5 stars Flaunt it is Awesome!.......2000-06-26

You gotta like this album. Futuristic samples and whiz guitar work by Tony James (Generation X w/Billy Idol) is incredible. Still have the LP and posters from the concert. Pick it up before it's gone.

4 out of 5 stars A for Effort....O for omissions!!!!!.......2007-01-25

I just received this "2 albums in 1" deal and on the whole I think it is pretty good for the price and idea....HOWEVER....There were 2 omissions from the "2nd Half" of this compilation..1.Success and 2.Dancerama...which were hits for the group...it probably would have been better if the company just made a budget double-disk edition....I did get "Dress for Excess" separately. This "compilation" is still a great addition to collecters, but the two songs missing is a bit of a let-down...

5 out of 5 stars The Sputnik Corp. is Back!.......2000-07-15

Well it's about time that the pioneers of horror show, cyber-punk, Clockwork Orange, electro rock and roll have returned! Sigue Sigue Sputnik gave the 80's what it was truly missing, Guts! Most electronic bands were whimpy. Sputnik were weird and strange! Flaunt it contains hyperactive electro ditties like "Love Missle F1-11", (which you may have heard in "Ferris Buehler's Day Off"), and "21st Century Boy". The one thing that made Flaunt It really cool was how Sputnik paid for it. They sold commercials between tracks. (Studio Line by Loreal!) Then we have Dress for Excess. Sputnik goes commercial! This albumn has their pop tune "Success" This song is a little toned-down for the Sputniks but is still a great track! This albumn also gets into a bit of hyperactivity! All-in-all this CD combo is a dream come true for the Sigue Sigue Sputnik fan! Sigue Sigue Sputnik, they invented the future!

5 out of 5 stars Before Their Time.......2000-06-23

A welcome reminder of one of the 80's most under-rated pioneers of electro-rock n roll. Following on from the 70's mantle of Suicide, Sputnik gave the world a kick in pop-chops. Flaccid dance and hoary old dinosaurs like Phil Collins avec Genesis were be-striding the pop world and killing originality, when along came James, Degville et al with fishnet tights on faces, pinapple haircuts and bass playing from hell ! Listening again to these two slices of prime Sputnik, one can envisage all the wide-eyed kiddies thinking of how they too would have liked to have been able to sell the advertising space inbetween the album tracks, as Sigue Sigue did on Flaunt It. Pioneering sample handling from cult film pervades the entire span of both albums, even the more laid back pop of the Pete Waterman produced Dress for Excess still throws convention out of the window with standouts like Orgasm. Long may they reign in electro hell (Heck for you Yankees !) And roll on their new album - due mid 2000. Sputnik you have been sorely missed. Come back and kick start the millenium, your time is now !

5 out of 5 stars Just your typical 21st Century Boy Band.......2000-08-14

The great thing about Sigue Sigue Sputnik was the fact that they took the whole concept of being a 21st century boy band so seriously.

Their songs are written in a sort of Clockwork Orange quasi-English ("Deluxe she looks, she looks she can can") and there's lots of references to futuristic situations and places (the "Pleasure Store" from Atari Baby is a good example). Rio seems to have become the world headquarters of cool and it's normal to have actual ads (for actual hotels, magazines and hair mousse) on records.

None of this is ever explained, it's just accepted as part of life and this adds to the sense of witnessing an actual band from the future.

Some people say the music is repetitive (there's a Georgio Moroder, "dagga-dagga-dagga" bassline through every song), but I quite LIKE that. Sigue Sigue acted out the role of being a 21st century boy band to the extent of making valid, if not particularly ìnteresting or distinctive music.

On the positive side, the music is fast and stripped down enough to come at you like a flying saw blade. The sound is clean and machine like and fast and well... Efficient? Glittering? Futuristic? Certainly. There's even "Atari Baby" which I suppose is meant to be some sort of futuristic ballad/crowd pleaser thing "for the mums and dads" (all boy bands have a song of the sort)

Take it as comedy, take it as theatre rock or dance music or whatever. I'm sure you'll wind up taking it as SOMETHING, this was one wondrous "concept" band who went the whole hog.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST RECORDING OF ALL TIME!!!.......1999-07-06

Hype, beats, samples, attitude and balls to spare, this futuristic disc came out in 1986 and has forever changed the landscape of music as we know it. "Love Missile F1-11" is the best rock and roll song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars This is Sigue Sigue Sputnik's first major release in the US........1999-03-25

If you want glam, creativity, and electronic instrumetation at an upbeat tempo, then this is the album for you. many don't realize, but Sputnik even got a place in Ferris Bueller's Day Off soundtrack. the visualizations are good for the imaginitive/fatalistic types, "like a music video, but in your head!"

            Album Details

TV Rock is a Name You'd Be Well Familiar with in 2005, after Capturing the First Taste of their Success with Remixes, which Most Notably Include their Rewiring of Paul Mac's 'panic Room', Sander Kleinberg's 'the Fruit', as They Raced Up the Charts and Lured You to the Dancefloor Throughout the Year. Now Grant Smillie and Ivan Gough have Decided It's High Time for Us to Get Nasty to their Own Sounds, with a Fabulous Dancefloor Stalker in the Form of the Chic, and Sleazy as Hell 'flaunt It.' They've Enlisted the Help of Dirty Laundry's Seany B, Whose Gruff Drawl Adds a Touch of Scotch Spiced Sleaze to the Track. 'flaunt It' is an Instant Party Classic That'll Leave You all Breathless.

"Flaunt It" would have to be one of the catchiest songs ever!!!

1 - Radio Edit. Similar to Main Room Mix, but shortened to a radio-friendly length. 5/5

2 - Main Room Mix. The best version of Flaunt It, with it's pounding bassline and great vocals. 5/5

3 - Dirty South Mix. Not as good as Main Room Mix, but still good. This one has a faster pace. 4.5/5

4 - Original Mix. This one is kinda boring to begin with, but it gets better as the song progresses. 4.5/5

Sure, it's overplayed, but hey, it's overplayed for good reason. Great song!!
