I first heard these guys in summer 2004. I was on vacation and a local kid told me they were playing so I threw caution to the wind and went to see this band I had never heard of. At first I thought: oh great, another acoustic three peice faggot emo band. I was far from reality. They played a 4 song acoustic set that only had one drumming song... However, despite the fact that it was so simple, and they were so...indie. Anyone that knows me would tell you I hate generic simple emo pop. Why was I liking this band?! Why did I buy the Demo at the merch booth? After listening to the demo, then buying this EP almost a year later, I know the answer.

I have heard so many bands like these guys. Saves the day, something corperate, Death cab, Sherwood, plus a thousand other indie pop acoustic acts that seem no different...AT FIRST GLANCE. Let me tell you people, these guys have something that none of the former do. The vocals...are...great. Sad but soothing. The guitar may be simple. (like 2 chords per song) but it's done so well. You get sucked in. The lyrics are also far beyond the genre. Everything about these guys sticks out only when you take the closer look. Many will pass them off as another crappy indie act but I'm saying it right now! They are better than that! Right now, go to purevolume and get the downloadables. You'll get addicted to this band in minutes like I did.

Now, I will admit, this EP is not their best work. Thus the 3 stars. While it's much more diverse than the older stuff, it's also much more atmospheric. That's a trait I associate with bands like death cab. And, while I do not look at that as a bad thing, it doesn't work for this band. Fortunately their new LP is a lot better than this one due to the fact that they go back to the old style they had. That doesn't mean though, that this EP sucks... Far from it actually. It's got some really unique stuff on it that will keep you guessing what they'll do next.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this for people just trying to get into the band. Go download the purevolume stuff or buy the new LP. This EP is strictly for those diehard fans, or fans of Death cab. I'm not saying it's not as good as the other material DLD have, but it is different and moodier. Not a package that's as easy to take as other DLD material.

I've been listening to Daphne Loves Derby for a while. Their earlier works (which can be found on purevolume) are almost completely acoustic. Simple yet elegant. This EP shows the band turning everything up a notch - from going electric to improving their sound as a band.

The EP starts off with "We Bet the Willing." This is a nice intro track into "Closing Down the Pattern Department."

I must say that "Closing Down..." sums up the growth in DLD. The lyrics are fantastic and all the musical elements have improved. I could easily imagine hearing this song on the radio.

The EP continues onward with "Come Winter." This is a new version of the song (I think it was actually written a few years ago). The original is completely acoustic with much simpler guitar riffs. The new version switched to electric guitars and also added an instrumental. This song shows so much musicality. I especially love the instrumental. It really adds a lot to an already fantastic song.

Next comes "Deserts Eating Oceans." This is one of those 'epic' songs: the kind where it starts out softly and then kicks it up a notch. The lyrics on this track are awesome.

The final track is "These Ghosts, My Hopes, The Sand, The Sea." This is a great choice for a last track. It is more subdued than the other tracks, but just as good. Again, this song is really lyrically sound. The instrumental thing at the end is also really cool.

I hope everyone will go out and buy this EP. Daphne Loves Derby is a great band and they deserve all the support they get.

simply beautiful.......2005-05-13

I started listening to this band last year, so i was kind of late since their earlier works came out 2 years ago and this ep came out about the same time i found out about them. comparing the two works, i can say that their first album was a great acoustic album with simple, yet great melodies. However, after listening to this ep, i have to say that Daphne Loves Derby has evolved and changed their styles with a more electric, yet still emo and compassionate, sound. The first track is a short song, we bet the willing, which is an intro to the second song, closing down the pattern apartment. the song is has a great riff with great lyrics. the third song is an electric version one of their old songs, come winter, but i believe the original version is better mainly because the original version eccentuates the simplicity of the guitar riffs, but in the new version the guitars make the song seem kind like an orchestra, which i didnt like so much. the fourth track, deserts eating oceans, is my favorite track. its starts out so tranquil then comes out with an amazing riff and kenny choi's (lead singer) transitions his voice as well. however, the song ending a little funny. the last track, theses hopes, my hopes, the sand, the sea, is a great ending track because it stays tranquil and quiet as the theme of the song and it seems that choi brings his voice to a deeper tone. its a very simple, yet beautiful song. overall i am glad i bought this ep, but i suggest that you plan to buy their first album first. overall this was one of the best cd/eps i bought and i still keep listening after many months.
