A wonderful collection of music spanning from the Baroque to the Modern and so Affordable. Each CD is in a full size jewel-case with beautiful cover art - paintings of Renaissance-era angels in muted, slightly reflective, metal-tone inks - all within a box that ties them all together. There are no liner notes in the booklet, just track listings, but the music speaks for itself. Maybe I just don't get it.......2007-06-27

I first heard of Ben Harper while watching a documentary about MoTown and the influence of the Funk Brothers. Ben Harper was one of the singers used to sing with the remaining band members. His voice on these songs was crystal clear, resounant, and powerful. I thought, "I need to get a CD by this guy." Well, this boxed set is a disappointment. He whispers through the songs in a soft voice. I listened to it once, and not since. His voice just was not featured in this album. I admit, maybe I just don't get it. I will give it another try, but for now, this album was a big letdown for me.

I recently saw BEN HARPER on the PBS TV saturday night weekly AUSTIN CITY LIMITS and this guy and his band blew his "Live" audience and myself off our surroundings with his pure and earthy multitextured brand of original music. Whether it's rock, pop, a little bit of country, reggae, blues, or jazz tinged soulful R&B music, BEN is one of the very few all around musicians who captivates and leaves you spellbound with his sincere performances. No question about it: I had to purchase this box set and the other three cds. BEN HARPER's recordings are priceless and classic...he thoroughly entertains and lifts you with his music and message. For those who don't know Ben Harper yet, it's never too late! Wether you like Blues, Rock or even R&B, with Ben you'll be more than satisfied... And if today, it's quite easy to put a tag on artists, such as: Pop, Rap, Punk...for him, it doesn't work! In fact, his music is obviouly inspired by many other styles, and the result is always an incredibly surprising experience! Then it seems fair to say that Ben Harper's sound is unusual and also extremely pure...
But moreover, for those who are, just like me, sensitive to the words, Ben's songs will introduce you to a universe made of Peace, Honesty and Poetry! Finally, it's pretty clear: "this guy"
knows who he is, what he does and where he's going, and if you let him take you for a ride, you'll feel it, without a doubt!!!

I just bought this box set yesterday. I've heard from all my dave-matthews-loving friends that this guy ROCKS. I've only heard that single..., the "steal my kisses" one (junk!) and this other album which i dont really remember, if you get my drift. So, anyways, i have heard such wonderful things, so I just impulse-bought and got this KILLER 3-CD box set. It has all 3 albums hes done before this most recent "sell out/popular" album. Ever single CD is amazing. I dont think ive ever heard so much great music in one place. I can't stop listening to it....hes so incredibly talented. His lyrics, his voice, his blazing guitar, are all so incredibly powerful. I wish i had heard of him sooner. How i am a full-on fan. And I feel justified in being a fan, because i have all 3 Cds. The good ones, anyways. Let me tell you, out of the 35 some-odd songs on here, i probably dislike two. THAT'S how good this is. And i am a music snob. I am just stunned that this guy is so incredibly good.I strongly urge you to buy these CDs. They are emotion-packed, beautiful songs in the veign of the Dave Matthew Band, or David Grey, or Bob Marley. The sound samples do NOT do these songs justice.... His songs range from bleusy, rockin' guitar riffs, to peaceful, soothing melodies, and are each such solid albums that EVERY SONG is great. I can name maybe 3 other CDs i own that are as good. Now i have 3 more, i one box set! Buying all 3 albums from the box set is cheaper that buying the CDs individualy, too. So if you like bob marley, david grey, dave matthews, ANY of these guys, you are going to LOVE this. Such an amazing guitarist too. You're gonna love it. Enjoy!

samson was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century his debussy was sublime and his color palete to impresionism is unsurpassed. could someone tell me if these recordings of his debussy are the stereo ones

Samson Francois figure has evidenced slow but increasing enhancement through the years. His notable pianism, aristocratic approach and refined phrasing are some of his virtues.

If you still do not know about this legendary artist, no itý s the time for you to convince by yourself about the supreme level occupied by him.

When he left us in 1970 at his 46, he had so much to give. The musical world remained legitimately orphan and much more vile since his premature death.

But, fortunately his legacy will live among us, every time you listen any record you acquire of this peerless musician.

His Ravel is loaded not only of notable, sensual and asserive expressiveness. If you know about some other performance able to equal his Gaspard de la nuit, please, be my guest.

His Debussy is sober, eloquent with Impresionist flair and sublime musicality.

A true artistic and a fundamental treasure in your collection.

Unnecessary.......2001-04-18

While it would be, of course, somewhat unfair to rate this CD recording of some of the world's most famous pieces for virtuoso violin the same way one would for a mature, older artist's recordings, it is horrendous marketing strategy on the part of Sony Classical to release this three CD set on the premise that they are "brilliant," as stated on the back of the CD case. They are anything but, as a quick listen to any one of the three CDs will reveal to the discerning ear.

The first two CDs are mainly concerned with Mae playing the Kabalevsky, the Tchaikovsky Concerto in D, and the Beethoven Concerto in D -- all highly acclaimed pieces aimed at showing off not only the speed, strength, physical and mental endurance of the violinist, but also, certainly, the tone production and "fingers," as Sarah Chang would have liked to put it. Mae fails on almost all the above counts. While she professes to have a high degree of passion for the Tchaikovsky and the Beethoven (Mae gushes about learning them by heart long before her instructor had the chance to teach them to her), the pieces are a great disappointment. The first thing to jarr the ear is her tone (a scratchy, unconfident, and extremely tinny one, at that) and, rather surprising, her lack of capability at pulling off the cadenzas. It is beyond anyone's understanding how the then young Mae's speed and technical accuracy could be so highly acclaimed as they are by some quarters when she falters and stumbles along the notes, mainly in the higher registers. This is most apparent in the extremely poor playing of Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy, where she sometimes lags behind the entire orchestra by a few wrenching notes as she struggles to catch up and keep in tempo.

The pieces on the Virtuoso Album CD aren't worth much -- colourless, soulless renditions of miniatures that have been performed better by countless of other violinists, at every measure of age (Chang does a splendid job of the Carmen Fantasy, and she recorded it in the studios when she was only nine years old).

The only redeeming piece of the entire three CD set I can think of must be the Russian Dance from Swan Lake. Although her bowing is rarely, if ever, confident and full, her thin, wavering vibrato ever used effectively, she opens the piece with a vigour that isn't seen in any other of the pieces.

It is rather unfortunate that Mae has never really progressed far, classically -- a look at her later recordings (the Classical Collection 2) and her live performance at the Royal Albert Hall (where the Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2, Moses Variation on a G String, and a few others were played) drives the point home painfully. I am a fan, of course, but not one of her classical side -- the techno-pop-fusion music masks her flaws well enough to allow one to forget that one is listening to a very mediocre violinist at work.

Vanessa-Mae as a Child Prodigy at 12 and 13.......2000-11-14

Vanessa-Mae: is the beautiful young Singaporean violinist with her flowing hair, gorgeous figure, pop star clothes, electric violin, laser and light shows, websites, and rock band just a media creation, or is she instead a modern-day Pagannini or Liszt, a true virtuoso with a flair for showmanship? In other words, can she play? This three CD set of her early recordings, made when she was only 12 and 13 years old, answers the question authoritatively. Although there are, of course, some flaws, the fact remains that even at this early age Vanessa-Mae was a stunning performer. At thirteen she played better than many profession musicians have at thirty, myself included. Listen, for example, to the stunning beginning of Sarasate's Concert Fantasy on `Carmen".

There is a certain tension between the interpretations of the soloist and the conductor occasionally, especially when Vanessa-Mae wants to play faster than the conductor will allow. This is in fact my biggest criticism of the recording; but these ego wars are not only the bloodiest but also the most common of musical slaughterhouses, and it is no surprise that such a young performer would get caught up in it. Otherwise, the performance is terrific--intonation is impeccable, interpretation confident. In particular, Vanessa-Mae has a commanding technique in the highest range, where her tone absolutely soars. Only very rarely, and then only at the very end of a rising run, does her intonation slip slightly. And she varies her style appropriately to suit the music--at the time of this recording she'd not yet gotten to playing Vivaldi with a rock band. In Fritz Kreisler's Schon Rosmarin, I can practically see her in a ball gown with her hair up in ringlets, performing this for the Viennese elite at a society soiree. It seems appropriately schmatzy to me, and it provides a link between the Classical and popular sides of Vanessa-Mae featured in this collection.

This last title is somewhat curious, as only two-thirds of the way through do the selections take a virtuoso turn. Otherwise, they are pops and light classics that are not at all demanding of the performer. This CD has a theme of inspiration from various sources, and the selections are categorized as "inspired by the classics, inspired by cinema, inspired by pop and folk culture, and inspired by opera" and include such things as arrangements of Brahms Lullaby, Mancini's theme to The Pink Panther, and Richard Rogers' My Favorite Things. Unfortunately, the Beatles also make an appearance--I love the Beatles, but Lennon and McCartney's Yellow Submarine is a testament to the perils of drug use. Whatever fondness society has for this piece--and I know they do, as my 10 year old daughter is learning it on recorder for her music class at school--this affection must come from our memories of youth, the fun of the 70's and the association of the imaginative animation by Peter Maxx of the movie, perhaps even the symbolism, arcane as it may be, of the text. Objectively, though, the tune is as trivial and banal as anything ever written, and here it gets turned into a sort of mini-violin concerto. Call the Blue Meanies and the Apple-Bonkers to put a stop to that!

But the other performances and pieces on this CD more than make up for this miscue. Great early recording.......2000-11-11

I should of course first disclose that I do not know very much about classical music, but as far as I can tell this is a fantastic recording.

This 3-cd set is a reissue of the early classical recordings that Vanessa-Mae made before crossing over into pop. It is a fantastic set because it offers a wide range of music: Tchaaikovsky, Kreisler, Beethoven, Paganini, Sarasate, Bach, Brahms and others. Vanessa-Mae's playing is fantastic throughout. I have always felt that she is a much stronger classical than pop player -- she really does not bring much uniqueness to pop music (just electronic supporting instruments) -- however, her remarkable classical mastery is easily evident even to an inexperienced person like me.

All-in-all, the recording is remarkably mature and holds up well in comparison to VM's later classical recordings. Most highly recommended!

One of the triumphs of recorded sound.......2007-01-09

This collection not only represents all of the glorious music of Wagner the continues to influence composers to this day; it is also one of the greatest achievements both for Maestro Solti and for recording technology that was in practice during this time period. Yes, this music is lengthy, and because of the german dialogue often difficult to follow and comprehend, but I assure you that the rewards of listening to this collection will change your life. I would also recommend seeing any of these operas live, in that they are a truly magical experience.

A decent Wagner collection, for the price.......2004-06-08

None of these is my favorite recording of each particular opera, but for the new fan of Wagner who wants an instant, and decent, collection of recordings, one could do much, much worse than this. These recordings feature the most accomplished singers and orchestras of their day, as well as the most advanced sound engineering available. That said, these recordings (The Ring in particular) suffer from an over-consciousness of their own greatness. The producers strove too hard to create perfect, definitive recordings. The result frequently is a gorgeous, but lifeless reading of the drama. Solti's languid tempi don't help, either. Bohm or Kegel (when you can find him) are far better Wagner conductors. On the positive side, the presence of French tenor Rene Kollo in several of these recordings is a particular delight. He was a singer of extraordinary taste and refinement.

A note about Tristan und Isolde: The main reason to own this recording is for the supporting cast: Tom Krause as Kurwenal, and particularly Regina Resnik as Brangaene (the best recorded Brangaene ever, by far). Fritz Uhl as Tristan is a nonentity (where's Kollo when you need him!). Nilsson of course is brilliant, but her 1966 live recording under Karl Bohm has more fire.

Part 2: DIE MEISTERSINGER Analysis.......2004-01-29

Solti's Die Meistersingers is without doubt one of the best in the catalogue. His conducting is lively and very animated, and all the singers sing very beautifully - they all have beautiful voices. As with ANY wagner opera recording, there are drawbacks. Firstly, the orchestra and singers are really recorded too closely to each other - there is a lack of space in between orchestra, singer and chorus. Secondly, the microphones were placed too close, again, to singers, chorus and orchestra. This has to do with the recording venue - Orchestra Hall in Chicago - which does not allow the singers, chorus and orchestra to be spaced out nicely. So the sound is slightly unpleasant - but you can mitigate that by turning the volume down a little. It does help. Having said that, the digital sound is very full and vivid, all the details are beautifully captured by Decca's engineers. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is absolutely gorgeous - they play beautifully and articulate clearly. Having said that, you notice that the Chicago forces lack something that the Vienna Philharmonic possesses. Call it the X-factor. The Vienna Philharmonic is an opera orchestra - they play under the name Vienna State opera orchestra at the Vienna State Opera. But in concert and in recordings, they assume the name Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Anyway, being an opera orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic certainly knows how to play opera music better than the Chicago Symphony. The Chicago forces, though technically wonderful, lack that extra X-factor in their playing. I think it has to do with injecting emotion into the playing. The end result is that although the Chicago Symphony plays beautifully, the playing is sometimes a bit bland, and you miss the kind of frisson an opera orchestra provides. Mattila sings very beautifully as Eva - she is one of the highlights of the performance. the other highlight is Ben Heppner who is wonderful in his singing and phrasing. Van Dam is excellent as Hans Sachs. All the other principals are never less than adequate although they are a bit detached.

Having said all that, this is still one of the best Die Meistersingers in the catalogue. But you have to listen to it over a long period of time before you can appreciate it properly. I only began to really enjoy the performance after spending over a year listening to it (in between other things). But that's only because I listen to tons of other music. I guess if you just concentrate on Die Meistersinger, it might take a shorter time.

There's always this talk about the K's in Die Meistersinger - Karajan, Kubelik, Kempe. Well, Kempe is in MONO, Karajan's 1951 performance is in MONO, Kubelik's recorded sound is not very nice - on the hard side. I guess Jochum and Karajan's stereo would be good alternative, but this version can hold its own against those two. Unless you are a Wagner freak (in which case, you should just buy them all), this is perfectly fine as a sole representation of Die Meistersinger in your collection.

Difficult.......2004-01-27

Wagner's non-Ring operas can be quite difficult to listen to. If you buy this set, be prepared to spend time on it. I listened to it for a very long time. For some time I was quite dissatisfied. But with time, you learn to appreciate the operas. Now I enjoy them thoroughly. Like good wine, these operas become better over time. So don't throw your set away after 1 hearing. Listen to each opera for 100 times, then you'll discover the magic.

LOHENGRIN ANALYSIS:

Lohengrin. My goodness, the singing here is simply gorgeous. Jessye Norman is in superb voice and her voice rings out gloriously throughout the opera. Domingo has been criticized for his German diction. But don't forget that Lohengrin is supposed to be a foreigner. Besides, his beautiful golden tone more than makes up for the unidiomatic diction. With such wonderful singing from Domingo, you just forget any shortcomings with respect to diction and related stuff. Besides, a lot of listeners do not know German (I don't) so they won't really care. Contrary to popular beliefs, Wagner loved beautiful singing. Many will be astounded to know that Bellini was one of his favorite composers. Did you know that Brunhilde's battle cry "Hoyotoho!" HAVE TRILLS WRITTEN IN THEM!!!!! YES!! Birgit Nilsson doesn't sing the trills. Almost no Brunnhilde ever attempts the trills. Only exception is Gwyneth Jones. Yes, contrary to popular belief, Wagner has some elements of Bel Canto written in them. Wagner's music has been subject to much abuse - singers singing it in a rough way. the Solti set shines out for the wonderful legato lines by Domingo, Norman, Randova et. al. It is simply a ravishing performance. No doubt one of Solti's most beautiful Wagner recording. I am not suprised that the Penguin Guide once gave this opera a rosette. Finally, instead of a tenor and a soprano with pressed shrill sound and a forced out tone, we have sensuous, beautiful, gorgeous legato lines - ravishing tone poured out minute after minute, underscored beautifully by the incomparable VPO and Solti's lively conducting - the tempi never sags but Solti never drives the music hard either.

Awesome Collection!.......2007-01-12

I've always been a Black Sabbath fan....ever since my old friend from High School gave me my first Sabbath album "Paranoid" in exchange for a cool party we had.

His gift to me was much more rich than the party, and also had a more lasting effect.

The collection is awesome! I love the sound and now am enjoying Sabbath albums I've never heard. Believe me, you won't be disappointed if you're into Sabbath. I've had it for about 6 months now and am glad that I bought it.

The one stop sabbath collection, compact package........2006-08-10

I puchased this around when if first came out 5 or so years ago, and about a year after Warner bros decied remaster and release the American box set, which I have not seen the inside packaging to compare with this set. What I can say is that this set really cool. As a record collector as well, the CD sleves are Mini replicas of the packaging the original albums sleves that were produced in, down to the poster that was inserted in them. All the great artwork and pictures as well. Again, it would be nice to sometime compare this with the american version counterpart. Also included is a nice booklet with history and pictures. I love this package, and have no regrets not getting the US version. Now, if you are concerned about not having the material on the Bonus CD of the US version, not to worry. Their is a Black Sabbath release called "Black Mass" that has the 4 tracks included on that disc, as well as enchance with the videos of the performance. So you can have it all. The best thing about this set (besides the nice packaging) is that it is about half the size of the US release, taking up less shelf space. So don't overlook this item. If like unique packages, this is the one. Also, check out The Singles 1970-1978 box set, it is a nice companion with similar packaging to this set.

Even Has The Original Poster Inserts For "Vol 4"!.......2003-03-29

Just the flat out coolest, heaviest box set I own. Sabbath's first 8 albums faithfully reproduced on cd to their original vinyl album counter parts....inserts, lyrics and all! The set offers the best sound yet on these metal classics. The original poster inserts are even in "Vol 4" which is my favorite Sabbath release. If you plan on starting a Sabbath Collection or just filling some holes in your current one, start and end here....sell the Black Sabbath cds you currently own on eBay. One final "warning", if you don't have a subwoofer, turn down the bass on your system...otherwise Geezer's gonna blow your speakers!

The Mother Lode of Black Sabbath's Greatest Years.......2003-03-24

This is a great set to have if you need to own the early Black Sabbath CDs featuring Ozzy Osbourne. I had owned many of the discs in this collection on a label called Power Sound 2001 and they sounded horrible. I loved these songs so much that I finally could not stand hearing them in inferior versions anymore, so I purchased this set from the Castle label. It was a hard decision choosing between the Warner re-masters and the Castle versions, but I have to say that I'm extremely happy with this set. The music is crisp, clear, and up front. All in all, this is an excellent set that should fulfill your Ozzy/Sabbath needs.

The packaging replicates the original LPs, which is probably fine for most people, but for me it is not ideal. The paper inserts and cardboard LP style folders are cumbersome and run the risk of scratching the discs when handled. Normal jewel cases would have been a better decision. The box is quite nice, however, and it all fits nicely on a shelf. But the packaging really doesn't matter much-it is the music that counts, and the music is incredible. The Ozzy years were indeed the best that Black Sabbath ever experienced. Buy the set and see for yourself.

No need to get anything else from the Sabbath.......2003-02-16

When I started my Black Sabbath collection, I had no idea about the existence of this box set, until at a used CD store I found their album "Never Say Die" in this miniature edition. After that I started looking for the other albums when I finally found this Box Set...and once I got to tear the wrap and finally see all the mini lp's, I was glad to be a Sabbath fan. This is the one box set I would never get rid of...it is a beautiful thing.

I really thought this would be better.......2005-09-22

Based on the music on All Songs Considered and the fact that so many of the snippets NPR plays are songs I love, I was fully prepared to adore this entire collection. Sadly, it's far too bland. Tribalistas, Clinic, The Decemberists, Austin Lounge Lizards, are all bands I discovered thanks to NPR but the songs on these album live up to the stereotype of NPR being overly mellow.
