Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
A beautifully full, sweetly melodic pop album that is so lush with sound, it takes a few listens to realize that, remarkably, all the songs are performed with only acoustic instruments. Rhythm guitars provide a thick mattress on which the rest of the elements gently bounce. No single note rises above another. The well-harmonized vocals blend perfectly with the rest of the instruments. The lyrics are fanciful plays on words, but they're sung so earnestly that one still finds relevance and meaning in them. "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell" are the best examples of cleverly skewed lyrics supported by elegant melodies. Overall, Cakeis a wonderful acoustic accomplishment. --Beth Bessmer

The twisted cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is a statement of intent, while the cool jazz riffs from the band's trumpet player are part of what makes tracks like "Daria," "It's Coming Down," and "Frank Sinatra" so original. "The Distance" is a funked-up jam with a Chili Peppers chorus. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars it puts a smile on my face.......2007-06-25

This album really makes me happy. When I need to get a smile from myself or just about anybody else, I can just put on "I Will Survive." Truly, the entire album is big fun. Tons of great lyrics. Great horn. Groovy vocals. Just a really fun album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-24

I tell you, to fully appreciate Cake, you need a decent pair of headphones or speakers. Fashion Nugget has awesome bass, guitar lines, and decent sound and a lot going on. It's easy to miss a lot of the details that make Cake so good, they pack a huge hit at times, but if you miss it, Cake isn't as good as they really are.

Enough of that, the music is great. There's country, jazz, rock, the band's sound is very unique. The horn is a great addition, as well as the drums, the many guitar lines, John actually sings, and the bass lines. Anybody who wants bass will like Fashion Nugget's basslines. The lyrics are pretty creative, but sometimes hard to figure out. Any creative lyrics takes a whlie to realize it's genius. No looking on Wikipedia or Arisfacts first, _______ cheaters!

Okay, I realize I can't do much after other people explained it better, but I think it's good. This one is sort of a gamble, try downloading a few songs (please buy, support the artist, you __________). Don't rely on sound samples on this one much, beacuse the sound will sound so much like _______, and you need good sound to do Fashion Nugget justice. Don't even bother with them, although iTunes has good samples, more than Amazon (ps iTunes is free). I'm stuck with amazon, because my internet _______ _________ _________. ________ AOL.

This is miles better than that bland waste Comfort Eagle. I might consider Prolonging The Magic (possibly the others).

A new record from the Sea and Cake is like a cool breeze, floating in off the water after a hot, sunny day. Unlike the dark, cerebral vibe of label-mates Tortoise (for whom drummer/producer John McEntire also plays and produces), The S&C plays loose. Still, the new record from Sam Prekop and company is especially relaxed, with songs that melt down into colorful smears. While 2003's One Bedroom was pointing in a more pop-oriented direction, Everybody is even more straightforward and stripped down, with only peripheral references to the jazzier sound of past efforts like 1995's The Biz. They're still capable of it though. Check out the free-form, jam-band vibe of "Left On," as McEntire's rollicking percussion dissolves over Prekop's gentle fadeout. But songs like the lead track, "Up on Crutches" are more representative, full of momentum and dynamics. Even the instrumentation is simpler; listen to the hand claps and the fuzz pedal on "Crossing Line." The Sea and Cake have never sounded uptight, but at times their beachy sound has seemed a little forced, like they were straining to suppress their experimental chops. But in challenging themselves to simplify, the band finally achieves a state of laid back clarity. It's the perfect soundtrack to lazy Sunday afternoons, letting Prekop's breathless voice dissolve like vapor against diffuse melodies and gliding guitars. Put on Everybody and tune out of the world. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Their first full-length in over four years continues to perfect their singular brand of dreamlike, hot-buttered pop music that sounds delicately handcrafted, yet effortless all the same. Sheets of glowing guitar tones skip along propulsive percussion underscored by gently funky, introspective bass lines, all adorned by breathlessly delivered lines of lyrical poetry.

4 out of 5 stars A return to form.......2007-07-04

With straight-up guitars, lyrics that are easier to follow, songs that are bit more tightly focused, "Everybody" is a step away from the process-heavy sound of "One Bedroom" and more in line with earlier work. Overall, the songs are way too short for how good they are. I frequently listen to this disc twice in a row. Not the masterpiece that is "Fawn" but highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars exactly........2007-06-21

I sat up and listened, immediately liking this release. It certainly pays off on The Sea And Cake's ability to seamlessly both rock and swing. There's just the right amount of dissonance underneath the propulsive grooves and guitar lines, which acknowledge a debt to West African polyrythm.

This was a very welcome listen, I'd hazard that The Sea And Cake is at the top of their game.

4 out of 5 stars Soundtrack for a Slow Summer Day.......2007-06-19

I am new to The Sea and Cake, having bought the CD based on a strong review on The Onion's AV Page. I like this band's sound a lot. No song really jumps out at you, but they are all good. Their sound is not radio-friendly, you'd probably find them on a "light jazz/easy listening" station if at all, but that does their music a disservice. Their sound fits a slow drive through the wine country, or a breezy afternoon on the patio while reading a good book. The music is gentle without being boring. They sound like nobody else, probably best described as a mellower Sonic Youth, with less dissonance and more melody, with a little Modern English mixed in, only with more emphasis on mood rather than beat. The lead vocalist, Sam Prekop, has a soft, mid to high octave voice that sounds somewhere between a '70s folk-rocker and a present-day EMO warbler. In short, everything about this band is balanced and multi-influenced in a way to make their sound unique, accomplished, and worth hearing. I recommend this CD for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sea and Cake album ever.......2007-06-11

I've been listening to this band since about 2000. I think I have pretty much all their music. Anyway, I originally heard of them when looking around for Tortoise CDs (both bands are apparently from Chicago). In my opinion, this is the best and most consistent album I've heard from them yet. I sure hope they put out a lot more music in the future.

As my girlfriend said, "I just don't understand why they're not the most famous band in the whole world!"

5 out of 5 stars A Rocking Return.......2007-06-08

I really enjoyed this CD, I purchased it in pre-order status so that I'd get it ASAP. My friend got some tickets to see them in Solana Beach in the San Diego area, and I wanted to prep before their show with new music. Sounds great in concert and on CD. Can't really think of a song that I don't like. I particularly like Up on Crutches and Transparent, Too Strong is a really cool upbeat song too. Great addition to the Sea and Cake sound.

When two-fifths of Cake defected to form Deathray after the release of their sophomore album, Fashion Nugget, some wondered if Sacramento's answer to Camper Van Beethoven would disappear into the land of one-hit wonders--especially since Cake's lone hit, "The Distance," had been penned by departing guitarist Greg Brown. But true to bandleader John McCrea's deadpan cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," Cake turned around and repeated their success with 1998's Prolonging the Magic and its infectious hit, "Never There." Now comes Comfort Eagle, and, with it, news of drummer Todd Roper's departure (which probably explains the addition of drum programming to McCrea's ever-expanding credits). Like Beck, McCrea's self-sufficiency is only matched by an overriding ironic sensibility. It serves him well on the title track where, above mock Middle Eastern drones, he takes on all poseurs ("Now his hat is on backwards, he can show you his tattoos / He's in the music business, he is calling you 'dude'"). By comparison, "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," a song that dates back to McCrae's coffeehouse years, sounds formulaic (which probably explains its selection as the album's first single). No matter, tracks like "Long Line of Cars" and "Meanwhile, Rick James..." are sufficiently intriguing to make up for it. Factor in the distinctive trumpet embellishments of Vincent DiFiore, the band's other original member, and Comfort Eagle seems guaranteed to ensure that, no matter what happens, Cake will survive. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Cake is awesome.......2007-07-09

Opera Singer should be required listening for anyone who writes songs just to see how five different rhythms can form a bed for a vocal of a completely different rhythm.

Short Skirt - Great story
Comfort Eagle - Just grabs you in every way
Long Line of Cars - Wow!
World of Two - Holy crap! It is wonderful in every way.

3 out of 5 stars Got me down (3.5).......2007-04-09

I got a little dissapointed when I heard this band, I guess I was looking for another Bloodhound Gang. I love that band way too much, and I odn't think I will never find another Bloodhound gang.

SO yes, YTou have probally heard short skirt/long jacket. This album is just way overrated and some people really seem to like this band way too much. I don't always think the singer does his best. Same as Beck, but at least they have a good sound. The songs are forgettable, get boring fast. The drum machine really hurts it, because drum machines have no soul (it can work, btu rock music? Besides BHG, ti dosen't work very well). Great music for mall shopping (I got the urge to check them out while in Linens' N things), that's it. PLus. his voice is just too one dimensional Let's just say that my expectations were ________.

I think a track by track is necessary, just to say what songs brought it down to only three stars.

1.Opera Singer-this song is really ________, it's annoying, boring, and poppy. the drum machine makes this song really one dimensional.
2.Meanwhile, Rick James...-I liked this song. It's cool, long and interesting.
3.Shadow Stabbing-Great guitar work, catchy and memorable.
4.Short Skirt/Long Jacket-The drums are actuallly pretty good. A lot of people have heard this song.
5.Symphony-this song just stinks.
6.Arco Arena-typical instrumental.
7.Comfort Eagle-this song is good, but the sitar is too cheap soudning. It's overrated, certainy not the bset song they have ever done, bull____
8.Long Line OF Cars-Great bass lines. Pretty Funky, one of the best on the album.
9. Love You Madly-average, but a fun song. Very fun, but it dosen't have much depth, and sounds a little one dimensional sometimes.
10.Pretty Pink Ribbon-See Opera singer
11.World Of Two-A failed attempt at a Fashion Nugget song.

Sorry I tried. It's not working as well. It's an interesting, but the Bloodhound Gang is way better. Their pop culture lyrics are so much smarter (sorry, bizzare don't cut it), and their music, choruses, are so much better. Let's just see the Cake fans boil after reading this. So yeah, Bloodhound Gang own these guys anyday of the week. In fact, these are a piece of _____ compared to them

5 out of 5 stars This 'Cake' Takes the . . .Well, You Know.......2007-01-25

I discovered Cake quite by accident and probably several years after everyone else who really loves the band. But, I adore this album and really can listen to it again and again and be amused anew each time I hear it. If an album can make me smile and dance at my desk at work, it is a keeper and this is certainly one of my favorites. While I really appreciate good music, what really catches my attention is clever lyrics and this album is full of those. Great, fun songs.

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

There were only three songs that were notable. Very disappointing. Did not need to buy an entire CD for three songs.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie Soundtrack.......2007-03-15

If you've seen the show Inside the Actor's Studio, you will know the question at the end that asks "What profession would you not want to do?" I always thought I would answer that question with, "A Music Critic." To me, music has groove or it doesn't. That's it. Whether Rock, Hip Hop, Funk, Blues, Reggae, Latin, Jazz, or Pop, if it's got groove, it's good. I don't know how critics can write a thousand words about a new C.D. With that said, this Soundtrack is loaded with groove. Point being, it's Good! From The Source, to The Cult, to a remix of Kylie Minogue's super tune with New Order mixed in, this C.D. will "keep ya head ringin'."

5 out of 5 stars Yes! Great!.......2007-03-12

This movie was amazing and the music to go along with it was also excellent! Too bad the rolling stones didn't get on there but it's a fantastic album! Fer sure! Buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Some great songs, the rest are slow theme music..........2007-01-26

I bought this CD for the You Got the Love song where, in the movie, the absolutely gorgeous girl is dancing in the club while Daniel Craig is watching her. I can't stop listening to it. But, the rest of the CD contains okay music or the theme music from the movie. That's fine, but what about some great British/Euro music inspired by the movie. I guess I regret buying this CD for the one song.

3 out of 5 stars Not fabulous, but OK........2007-01-05

I think these songs sounded great in the film, but as a stand-alone CD, it's a bit fuddled. A lot of very different types of music, and it doesn't seem cohesive. Very retro.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08

John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.

2 out of 5 stars Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31

Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.

Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?

Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.

One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.

While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

4 out of 5 stars complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14

Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09

This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25

I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

A kinder, gentler Cake? You'd never know it from listening to the opening track, a ditty with the rather unconventional title "Satan Is My Motor." But the truth is, most of Prolonging the Magic finds the Sacramento, California, quintet toning down the arch commentary of tracks such as "Rock and Roll Lifestyle" and "The Distance" from albums Motorcade of Generosity and Fashion Nugget. In its place is straight-ahead observational songwriting on "Alpha Beta Parking Lot" and "Guitar," and the naked, if still quirky, relationship commentaries "Where Would I Be?" and "Walk on By." Not to worry: The group's trademark humor is still in place on "You Turn the Screws" and "Sheep Go to Heaven," while touches of steel guitar and musical saw expand their already unusual sonic palette. As the title suggests, Cake seems capable of prolonging the magic a while longer. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars FACT.......2007-07-19

BEST CAKE CD EVER! In my opinion, by the time you listen to this cd twice, you will already have fallen in love with 60% of it, by the time you listen to it 5 times it will be 100% it is catchy as hell.

5 out of 5 stars They do it again.......2007-05-15

If you're a Cake fan, you've probably bought this already. It's slightly more polished than, say, "Pressure Chief" (still my favorite), but it still has that marvelous musicality and wry lyrics. If you're new to the band, I recommend you buy more than one CD to experience their extensive range of musical styles.

2 out of 5 stars Cake's lowest point.......2006-12-20

I bought Prolonging the Magic years ago with high expectations. The first four tracks are good, and are worth the low price. Satan Is My Motor was of the quality I expected from Cake, coming in solidly with John McCrea's solid vocal and a tight groove from the band. The melancholy Mexico follows, another solid song, not quite as good as the first track. Never There, the single, is a departure from everything else on the album to make a single in the style of The Distance, but after awhile the catchy hook grows thin, as the song lacks much substance. Guitar is a nice song too. The rest of the album is listenable, mostly, but is all filler except Sheep Go To Heaven. From a musician's point of view, the rest of the album is plain, boring chord progressions, lyrics that appear to have meaning but are actually quite empty.

Prolonging The Magic is a bland album.

5 out of 5 stars Cake Fricken Rocks!!!!!.......2006-05-03

Cake may be the sweetest band i have ever heard in my entire life. They understand rock and know how to make a man chill. Chill, that's how life should always be. Cake thanks for saving my travashamockery music life before i first listened to Cake. Cake is the reason i don't listen to 50 cent and gangsta jams of such. Oh, yea! Did i mention how much Cake rocks?

5 out of 5 stars The Magic Continues.......2006-01-25

Like most people, I first heard Cake when they released "Fashion Nugget". But for me, it was this album that really made me a fan. I've since bought all their albums and I love them all, But this one is still my favorite.

"Magic" is upbeat, witty, and fun. "Satan Is My Motor", "Mexico" "Guitar" are some favorites, but the whole thing is solid. Seriously, there isn't a weak track to be found. I think it's their most complete album.

I highly recommend Prolonging the Magic, and all the other CAKE albums.

While artists like Beck and Radiohead see every new album as an opportunity for reinvention from the ground up, Cake has no such hang-ups. From the uniformly rustic cover art, the jerky rhythms and wobbly trumpet solos, each of Sacramento band's albums is reassuringly interchangeable. But on its fifth, the group's most distinguishing characteristic--John McCrea's deadpan, detached vocals--seems to have been given a makeover. On songs such as "No Phone" and "Tougher Than It Is" for the first time the singer seems, well, like he's actually trying to sing. It's nothing dramatic--the music will still sound immediately familiar to those who even in passing have heard hits such as "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" and "The Distance"--but with certain bands a little goes a long way. --Aidin Vaziri

This CD sucks. No matter how manty times I listen to it, I cant find anything to like about it.

1 out of 5 stars A huge let-down.......2006-07-28

Ive loved most all of Cakes' songs on everyalbum and if I didnt love it then it was at least Ok. Ive tried my hardest to appriciate this album but after 3 attempts Ive lost hope for it. If you like Cake and cant find yourself liking the songs right away dont waste your time trying to lie to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Tastiest CAKE yet!.......2006-03-29

I am a CAKE junkie - have all their albums - catch any show I can - eagerly await new releases. Pressure Chief was cranked from day one, and I still test the amps in my car with it. Wheels is such a hot arrangement, as are numerous other tunes on here. My wife used to hate CAKE, but this album actually pulled her in because John is a bit more melodic now. "No Phone" got her. Don't pay attention to the negative reviews! Crank this baby and I mean often!

4 out of 5 stars Pressure Chief - More Good Stuff from Cake.......2006-03-11

Another excellent effort from the boys of Sacramento. Nice to see them bring back a little country twang and swang that was missing on their last CD (Comfort Eagle). Cover of Guitar Man is great, and I can't believe it did not garner radio play. This CD has many elements of Fashion Nugget and Prolonging the Magic type songs and will not dissappoint Cake fans at all.

5 out of 5 stars probably the best thing ive heard in my life.......2006-02-27

a new evolved sound for CAKE. i wont say its better or worse than the old stuff but its new and exciting. this album rocks the socks off of any other non-CAKE CD i've listened to in my life. possibly the best CAKE one too

5 out of 5 stars Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27

It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30

What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.

As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.

Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23

Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-04-24

I've been listening to this album for fifteen years, and I can't believe I'm actually going to say this, but...it just gets better and better. I never get tired of CAKE. The lyrics and melodies are unmatched. Each song is a gem of unrivaled cleverness and tenderness. What a stunning confluence of sweetness and wit. It gives me something on every listen.

So many albums feel haphazardly slapped together--this one doesn't. It is finely crafted. And so many albums feel like they are about 4 songs too many--this one isn't. CAKE actually feels like it could keep right on going on its own.

I will spare you the details so you can discover them yourself. So I'm gonna keep it short and simple: I don't know what I'd do without this one album in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great brit-pop with clever lyrics.......2005-04-21

I'm writing this review 15 years late, but I had to comment on it. CAKE was one of my favorite CDs of the 90's, and I still can't get enough of it today.

The lyrics make this album really stand out. The play on words is so clever ("Just fair-weather words from four-letter friends" or "You made me feel I was born again, it's a shame I never grew up again") each song has at least one great line.

"Obscurity Knocks" is my favorite off the CD. A perfect pop song. Since the CD came out when I was turning 21, the song became an anthem for me (not really, but that sounds good).

Other outstanding tracks include "Only Tongue Can Tell", "You Made Me Feel", "Funny", "Thrupenny Tears", and "January's Little Joke".

I finally was able to catch TCS in concert, twice in the past year and a half in Austin at SXSW. Although I only got see a small portion of their regular show, they were very solid. I noticed that they didn't play anything off this CD, which was frustrating. If you have the chance to see them live, do so.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2004-08-19

Another one of those CDs that sounds as good today as it did 14 years ago.

TCS are probably a bit arty for many, but they have a very devoted following. They are very talented musicians, I remember way back when during a live show, they would occasionally swap instruments between songs. Very cool.

That being said, "Cake" still makes it to my main playlist. Francis Reader's vocals twist in and out of the numerous plays on words. John Douglas is a superb guitarist.

The standout tracks are the singles "Only Tongue Can Tell" and my favorite "Obscurity Knocks". "Circling the Circumference", another single, is good too but not as punchy as the other two. A great slow track is "Even the Odd".

A sublime CD overall, prolly rated 4.5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars A cake that's sparkling with colors.......2004-06-09

'Cake' by The Trash Can Sinatras falls somewhere in between The Sundays' dreamy guitar textures and the playful romps of The Housemartins. Throw in Johnny Marr's fluid jangles and minstrel-like vocals of Roddy Frame, and you have a debut combines melodic/acoustic-derived Britpop with The Smiths. Joyous and sparkling. Not a bad combination. Let The Trash Can Sinatras take you on a leisurely stroll where the sun is shining, the grass is green, and everything is alright.

4 out of 5 stars Far from "Trash"........2004-01-20

I don't know a single other person who knows this band, but I sure am glad I do. This is one of those special albums that came out at a great time in alt-pop. They sound alot like other bands from that era (1990), but also add a very smooth and melodic touch to their music, almost shoegazeish, but not. The best tracks in my opinion are "Obscurity Knocks", "Even The Odd", "Funny", and "Only Tongue Can Tell". All wonderful. If you like bands such as "The Ocean Blue" or "Mighty Lemon Drops", you should like this album. It might be the best "Cake" you ever had.
