Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a New Era..........2006-07-14

I had stepped into the Matthew Good Band because of the Stateside release of their popular (in Canada) "Beautiful Midnight". The incredible rock populated with Matt's presence both vocally and lyrically really left me without a clue as to where their following albums would go. Because of Matt's intentionally poor presence in the US, I didn't pick up on this album until a few months before Avalanche came out in early 2003, both of which (and all subsequent albums since then) I've had to import.

The album art sort of takes you off-guard, but that's merely the beginning. Page after page reveals colorful science book illustrations of various scientific concepts, such as Earth's core structure and as the cover reveals, the water cycle. These first few pages, a far cry from the generic garage band-style photos of "Beautiful Midnight" represent the point of no return: the beginning of Matthew Good's subsequent era in music.

Before working on this album, Matt underwent vocal cord surgery and recovered slowly in a hotel in Whistler, BC, while taking prescription painkillers. It was here where he wrote the twisted lyrics that would eventually see the light. He swore off smoking and adopted some incredible production values. His new soaring vocals and new backup choirs almost disarm you from beginning to end.

More of a "follow the white rabbit" than anything, this musical journey pushes you in and out of what is truly a terrifying and melancholy experience. "Advertising on Police Cars", "Tripoli" and "Under the Influence" only cement the demented pathway that this album ferries you along.

After a thorough listen, you'll experience a thorough paradigm shift of Matthew Good's musicology that becomes his trademark in all subsequent albums. The harder-rocking tracks almost exist as an obligation so you don't drown in the murk. And while none of them provide the same hits that, say "Hello Time Bomb" did on "Beautiful Midnight", that's really not what you're here for. A track that could've potentially filled that role, "Pony Boy" was released as a B-side and was also put on the "In A Coma" compilation. It's easy to see why it didn't fit.

While not as trendy as their previous albums, you can see Matt really wanted to get out on his own as this was the last effort of the Matthew Good Band before their dissolution. The next few albums serve as an almost pure siphon of Matthew Good-ness (yuckle!). If you start with Matthew Good solo, this is where he started. If you start with Matthew Good band, this is where it ends.

A fantastic crossroads for one of the greatest musicians in play today.

3 out of 5 stars Audio of Being.......2006-03-18

This CD is not bad. Not as good as "Beautiful Midnight" though. Too bad these guys called it quits.

5 out of 5 stars matt good at his best.......2005-09-06

even in the end they were still on the top of there game.

5 out of 5 stars Going out on top.......2005-08-26

It's a shame that this was their last album. Any hardcore MGB fan such as myself loved this album, and wish they could've done more.
Dave Genn, the great guitar player who plays solos so well, not even the greatest air guitarist can imitate! He kicks off the album opener, "Man of Action," with eerie chords before Rich Priske & Ian Browne blast in with their bass & drums. Lyrically, this track appears to be about Matt's late father ("this world it wore him out").
Rich takes over the next two tracks with powerful bass intros to the first single, "Carmelina", and "Tripoli," which is mostly comprised of Matt's Internet manifestos, as is the eerie look into the future on "Advertising on Police Cars."
Matt gets mellow on the acoustic "I, The Throw Away," and a song that should be the next Strange Days: "Truffle Pigs," which consists of Matt's best vocal tracks.
"Under The Influence" and "Anti-pop" are two of my favourite songs on the album, the latter of which will be a huge single for MGB. A very catchy song with lots of "do-do-do's" and kids chanting "let's get this party started!" "Under The Influence" is a pounding, anthemic tune where Matt reminisces on his youth (Just wanna be like we used to").
"The Workers Sing A Song Of Mass Production" is another great example of musicianship combined with great lyrics. Dave, with his piercing guitar intro before Rich & Ian bring in the rhythm section, not to mention great lyrics from Matt, like "life's a dirty business, so be a prick and do it while the world's awake."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - one of the best.......2005-06-25

I'm over 13 but I dont want to create an account.

This cd really is amazing. When I first listened to it, it sounded like an average cd with some off-beat tunes. Eventually, however, it grew on me. This is the type of music that I can listen to when I'm tired, bored, happy, sad, pretty much whenever - something that can't be said about many albums. Each and every song on this album is unique, and MGB never stops to amaze you with wonderful lyrics and subtle yet breath-taking tunes. This is the type of album that someone cannot truly enjoy until he/she has listened to it at least 10 times - at least that was true to me. Everytime I play this album it seems to sound better and better. This album is usually one of the first ones I rush to when opening my music folder. The truly wonderful element of this album, IMO, is that it is very original, yet does not stray too far away from mainstream type music. People that listen to all different types of music could enjoy this album. What I mean is that its not as hard to grasp as other albums like Radiohead's "OK Computer" and A Perfect Circle's "Thirteen Steps". Those two other albums are supposedly awesome as well, but it takes a lot longer to get use to it(for me at least, i still havent gotten use to it, but then I dont listen to it enough) - however, with "Audio of Being", it seems to grasp the listener much faster. Matthew Good also doesnt try to overdo anything, its just very subtle yet amazing music. This is currently one of my favorite albums. My favorite songs(I enjoy all of them, i really do, not just saying that to make this album sound better):

There's no doubt Vancouver's Matthew Good can write the kind of hook-filled rock song that immediately imprints itself on the listener's consciousness. Ultimately, though, even if he and his band were able to fill a record with riff-monsters of the caliber of "Hello Time Bomb" (a hit off 1999's Beautiful Midnight) it would probably become a little tiresome. The Audio of Being has its share of big shiny rock tunes, but Good and his cronies want it all--commercial success and artistic credibility. So for every rock & roll blast like "Carmelina" there is an "Advertising on Police Cars," in which the band incorporates a few musical and lyrical ideas from British art-rock icons Radiohead. This subversion of Good's formula doesn't always work, though--the blustery singer still sounds more convincing warbling away on bull-headed tunes like the tense, explosive "Man of Action," say, then he does playing the paranoid android in the aforementioned "Police Cars" or album finale, "Sort of a Protest Song." Still, the Matthew Good Band's fifth studio album contains enough great moments--Dave Genn's guitar in "Man of Action," "Truffle Pigs," and "The Rat Who Would Be King," the chorus in "The Fall of Man," the new wave synth hook in "Carmelina" (even if it does echo "Hello Time Bomb" a little too closely)--to satisfy fans and bring a few new listeners to the fold. It might not make anyone forget Radiohead's OK Computer, but at least The Audio of Being dares to push a few envelopes, and successfully more often than not. --Shawn Conner

5 out of 5 stars Matt Good the Great.......2002-04-02

This is the best album ever. Matthew Good Band never dissapoints me in any of there albums. They are the greatest band ever. and there not sell-outs either.

5 out of 5 stars Best Canadian Album of 2001.......2001-12-20

This is truly a work of art. This is the first album in awhile that I don't skip tracks. Normally, it would be a good song but I'd skip over it. This isn't one of those. The band nearly disbanded because of this and all their hard work was worth it. Songs like Man Of Action, The Fall Of Man, The Workers Sing A Song Of Mass Production or more band rock rather than radio friendly. Carmelina and Anti-Pop are those songs. They still rock, but they're more dumb rock. And there's the beautiful ballad Truffle Pigs, and the incredible The Rat Who Would Be King. Words cannot do justice do this song. The rest are good like Tripoli and I, The Throw Away are good as well while Advertising On Police Cars and Sort Of A Protest Song take awhile to get into but this rocks and you should pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars ALBUM OF THE YEAR.......2001-12-06

...Then again, every MGB album is. Folks, I don't rave about modern rock too often, but I do when it comes to these guys. This is another incredible album. It can be beautiful, violent, and emotional at different times, and sometimes all at once. Advertising on Police Cars is an amazing song, as are most of the songs here. It is somewhat uneven, in the sense that even though there isn't a single mediocre song here, the songs don't flow as well and this takes a while to get used to at first if taken as a whole. This is mostly due to the fact that there are so many different type of songs here. Still, an amazing album from a truly incredible artist.

5 out of 5 stars not his best, but it's still great.......2001-12-05

I'll admit that I'm a damn near obsessive MGB fan. I pre-ordered Audio of Being, just so I could have it ASAP.

This album isn't quite as good on the whole as Beautiful Midnight, but it's still the best album I've heard this year (not counting Beautiful Midnight US). It has hits like Carmelina, Anti-Pop, and Truffle Pigs. It also has some flat out creative songs (see: Advertising on Police Cars, The Rat Who would Be King, Man Of Action, Tripoli). All in all, a great CD. (...)

3 out of 5 stars New MGB - runs very, very hot to lukewarm........2001-12-05

Perhaps I'm beginning to take this band for granted, but I was not as satisfied with "The Audio of Being" as some of their previous work.

From "Raygun" to "Underdogs" to "Beautiful Midnight", and even "Loser Anthems", it just seems as if my current favourite rock band was just going to get better with each album they put out. But, unfortunately, "Audio Of Being" doesn't hold a candle to their undisputed masterpiece, "Beautiful Midnight".

"Audio Of Being" suffers from a desperation to make something that is a worthy follow-up to "...Midnight". The result, sometimes are songs like "Carmalena", which is probably the weakest hit-single they have put out - their first track, "Man of Action", would have fared better on the radio.

There still are, almost inevitably, a couple of great songs on here. Most noteworthy is a superb piece of writing called "I, The Throw Away", and another great song is "The Rat Who Would Be King", which MGB should consider making their next single. However, what amazed me about MGB's previous albums is just how many first-rate songs they had; especially when most albums seemed to consist of two great songs and a whole bunch of filler.

"The Audio Of Being" runs more hit and miss. It's got some stuff on here that I highly reccomend. But, it's not their best work.

          Album Description

Tim Carless is returning with a new album; both an arrival and a departure, his first as an instrumental composer. Previously an analogue purist, he has embraced the realm of laptop recording and audio processing, and dispensed with all prior self-imposed rules during the making of this album. The album is rich in both geographical and musical influences from the last two or three years; traditional guitar, bass and piano nestle with sounds sculpted from extreme and irreverent audio processing. The initial spark came from Tim being approached to compose for independent film, this coupled with his new-found pallet of the digital domain has produced some astounding work that weaves and turns through a collection of beautiful, poignant music, that displays both his strength as a composer and his craftsmanship as a producer.

A real groovefest. TC knows how to put sounds and rythms together in a interestingly provocative way. A great eclectic album.

First of all...I was surprised at the audio quality of this CD! These guys... Matt and Tom... recorded this album in Matt's living room and it sounds better than many studio albums I've heard. I could go on and on..let me just say...the music industry needs more stuff like this...these guys sound great...they are obviously having a great time churning out killer music...they are the bastard sons of rock! A strange crossbreed of Cheech and Chong meets Black Sabbath,Pink Floyd and some psychedelic orchestra! Do yourself a favor...screw the industry...support the small independent dudes and get this CD!
