For every moment of transcendent groove, the jam-band ethos seems to have generated an eon of aimless instrumental indulgence. It's a mindset that bedeviled even icons like the Grateful Dead when they endeavored to construct something as elegantly--and elusively--simple as a song. Blues Traveler has hardly been immune from the foibles of excess, which makes this focused, song-oriented album an instant career high point. It's no mean feat to be both disciplined and adventurous but, with the able assistance of veteran producer Don Gehman, that's just the trick John Popper and company have turned here. For his part, mouth harp virtuoso Popper makes more like the Stax horns than Satriani, often content to punctuate his band's ever potent rhythms with flourishes as earthy as they are saturnine. But the real news here is the band's rededication to songcraft, an ethos that yields gems from the Little Feat dynamic of "Eventually" and jazz/R&B touches of "My Blessed Pain" and "Thinnest of Air" to the muscular pop hooks of "Let Her & Let Go" and rewarding funk-meets-classicism of "This Ache." It's a tack that's challenged Popper to warm new dimensions of vocal expressiveness as well, and the band to focus its powerhouse abilities into a gritty wallop. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars To tell you the truth.......2006-03-22

As were the first two albums I bought by Blues Traveler, this is their true sound as it should be. A bit rough and unpolished, and yet just perfect!

5 out of 5 stars The Blues band is back and better than ever........2004-07-11

I stopped listening to the Blues Traveler in around 1997. I decided to listen to those loser punk-rock bands. I had the "Four" album, and I liked that alot, but I stashed that somewhere. In 2004 I finally bought their album on the way back home. Since then, I've never stashed this cd anywhere. This cd is pure gold baby!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent effort for Chapter Two.......2004-03-01

When Bob Sheehan passed away, Blues Traveler reinvented itself with a new bassist and the addition of Ben Wilson on keys. I can't imagine them now without this line-up. As good as they were before, this new lineup suits them very well and seems to have allowed them to really diversify their range of expression. Bridge, their first album with this new lineup, was AMAZING, one of their strongest records, and Truth Be Told is a solid follow up. The songs aren't as catchy as on Bridge, but they really grow on you. They are complex, yet very lyrical. And there is still space for jamming. The new Blues Traveler is distinct from the old one, and this new CD proves that they are evolving well in this new configuration. Blues Traveler is one of my favorite bands and I love what they're doing now.

5 out of 5 stars A great one to have..........2003-11-29

If you like rock, jam bands, or jazz, you will love this CD. Just slightly rockier than Blues Traveler's older CDs, you will be impressed my the great harmony and musicianship displayed on Truth Be Told. This has become the CD that I listen to if something is bothering me. Its upbeat and energized essence, to me, even seems inspirational.

3 out of 5 stars Some Highlights But Not Quite Prime Time.......2003-11-23

On Truth Be Told, Blues Traveller seemed to focus on developing more focused songs. There is a noticeable lack of emphasis on the jamming. Whereas there are some good songs, somehow I am a little bit dissappointed. Also, Johnny Popper's harmonica is hardly heard from throughout the record. These guys should know that this is what made Blues Traveller great!

The opening three songs are quite strong. Unable To Get Free has some nice gospel touches. However somewhere by the eighth song, the CD gets a bit tiresome. Many of the melodies seem to be recycled and the arrangements seem identical to one another.

Mount Normal comes to the rescue with some inspiring lyrics. And Partner In Crime has a fairly captivating riff. However, the overall feeling is that this CD is in the 3-3 1/2 star zone due to consistency in the creativity department.

4 out of 5 stars Z-Funk.......2007-05-14

George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic created "P-Funk" in the 1970s and Snoop Dogg gets credit for bridging that sound with hip hop in the '90s, thus creating "G-Funk".

After vibin' to chopped & screwed version of "Let The Truth Be Told" with its mostly funk-heavy beats under Z-Ro's syrupy, deep-voiced laid back gangsta rhymes, I think he just may have created an updated version of Snoop's signature sound.

I've yet to hear Z-Ro's other albums (yet) b/c I'm not a native Houstonian but this album sounds straight up like a retro, 1970s album with its funky feel. Great, great production but Z-Ro's rhymes shine brightest and carry that contemporary millennium hip hop sound.

His smooth delivery make this album very easy to listen to which is why I'd describe his style as Snoop but with a more gangsta twist -- at least that's my take (lol).

I did hear his earlier works are harder than this but "Let The Truth Be Told" is mellow by my standards. This album really ain't hard but it's gangsta if you listen 2 what Z-Ro's sayin. He came from nothin so he's real like that which is what I believe most Z fans like about his music.

Z-Ro's not gon' make you dance so this album may or may not be for all hip hop/rap music fans.

Me personally, I actually prefer more head-nodder, vibe-type hip hop you can listen 2 all the way through and get a sense of where the rapper's head is @ as opposed 2 the dance-heavy, party-heavy music the radio overplays. So I feel Z-Ro on many levels! He's an H-Town legend just like Koopa, Slim Thugga, Mike Jones, Flip, Lil KeKe and Paul Wall though I'm not sure he has the commercial appeal 2 sell 2 a national audience (we got u though).

Anyway, "Respect My Mind", this trance-like slow jam that samples Sade's "Cherish the Day" is my joint on this LP. I could listen to this track all day long.

Props 2 "From the South" with Paul Wall -- my intro to Z-Ro (late, I know) -- and "It's a Shame", a track I'd describe as a grimier version of Chamillionaire's 2006 crossover pop hit "Ridin' Dirty."

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest.......2006-12-08

I believe this is one of the best rap albums ever to come out. PERIOD. Not just Z-Ro's best but the best out of a lot of people. Z-Ro just keep doing your thing.

5 out of 5 stars Tha king of da Ghetto!!.......2006-09-05

Zro, like usual bring's heat and keep it hood. So if your looking for some candy paint, neon light's glowing, and grill and ice talk, you wont find it here.... But you will find slammin gangsta beats a blend, of south and west caost, style manily if you ask me.... His lyrics relfect on stuff he's personally been threw or seen happened to others.... So if you like kinda more 90's g rap ( the golden age of rap) when rap was good and talk, about real life, and not clubbing and singing love songs to the ladies" this is for you then"...... Oh for record T.I. aint no king of the south when scarface and the gheto boys been doing this since the late 80's....
I'll give T.I. tha king of bubble gum fake gangsta rap anytime....( how can u be gangsta when you make cookie cuter songs for the ladies and trl jams that's not gangsta) You think real hood rappers like Brotha lynch hung, mc eiht, spice 1, celly cel, c-bo,yukmouth, crime boss, gangsta nip. al kapone, gangsta pat, etc.... artist like that are going to lean with and rock and snap there fingers get out here....
Peace

5 out of 5 stars z-ro is da best and you know this!!!.......2006-08-06

z-ro is hot like fire... his name rings like bells down here in texas... if you know real than you should know the music of z-ro. this cat is talented and speaks da truth! I LOVE Z-RO TO DEATH AND WOULD BUY ANYTHING HE APPEARS ON!!! he dont rap about how much bling he got like some artists brag about constantly... he speaks about life and the things you go through with family and friends. my opinion is that he is the best rapper alive and thats what i mean and what i say and how i feel.. this cd goes hard just like the rest of the cds he got out!!! i promise you , you will not regret buying this or any other cds cause he spits out nothing but real talk!!!

5 out of 5 stars Z-ro is a hot Houston Cat so get the album if you recognize real.......2006-07-12

Look this cd is tight. This cat isn't like Paul Wall, who raps about having diamonds in his bookers or chain so long kids can jump rope with it. Yall stop buying rap that is garbage and pick up a real cd and support real rappers. Yall listen to too much commerical stuff and think most of it is hip hop. It is hip not so if you are real then you recognize real. If you are not then keep buying the Dike Jones, Paul Wall, and Cowboy Troy or whatever that cat name is. If a rapper has to be wack to have people support his album then I might come out with as a rapper knowing that people like yall who don't know hip hop would make me rich. I would be rapping about having gold toliet seats and carrots like Bugs Bunny. Well, anyways yall get the picture this cat is real so listen to the cd it is tight.

5 out of 5 stars The most thought-provoking lyricist in Christian music..........2007-06-20

This 2-CD set covers Steve Taylor's "hits" from the start of his career up to (but not including) "Squint". It has 34 tracks, including a "medley" track of some of his older demos, which in most instances you can compare to the finished product elsewhere in the set. High production value and provocative (controversial?) lyrics pull no punches

Much of Steve's early work was pop that bordered on "New Wave", and one song on the first disc (Am I in Sync?) actually makes a David Bowie reference. This anthology presents a good timeline for Steve's solo career in the 80's, and touches on his brief time in the group Chagall Guevera (the best band you've never heard of).

From biting social commentary (Guily by Association, Sin for a Season, Lifeboat, Colour Code and countless others) to heartwarming vignettes (Hero), Steve's lyrics are as relevant today as they were 25 years ago.

    3 out of 5 stars Anthology of Christian Music's 1980s wiseguy.......2006-10-17

Steve Taylor (with and without Some Band) was a fairly big draw in the mid-1980s, when his music and music videos were standard fare on local Christian channels. I and some friends saw him on tour in 1986. His biting wit and 80s guitar/synth sound made him popular among the born-again set, whether Catholic or protestant, in the 15-25 age group. This anthology, however, only gets three stars because it would have been better as a single CD. One thing I learned as I first listened to it was that the abovementioned 80s guitar/synth sound is really dated now (think "JesusDevo"). Nevertheless, it stands as a testament to what was happening in 1980s Christian music. Darryl Mansfield, Petra, even Stryper were just as big, but not quite as clever and edgy. I recommend this double CD for two groups: first, those who bought his albums in the 80s, and would prefer an anthology on CD; and second, for all those young Christian kids who think that Christian music used to be nothing but elevator music. Standout tracks are "This Disco", "Colour Code", "Lifeboat", "Meltdown At Madame Tussauds", and the classic "I Want To Be A Clone". For Taylor, being a Christian is about redemption and responsibility, not mindlessness and WonderBread.
