Instead of a descent into the depths of Fearless’ perma-sunglassed, take-himself-too-seriously persona, the duo, which also includes Tim Holmes, offers a curious but highly enjoyable mix of experimental beats and good old-fashioned guitar rock.Always fond of the occasional axe break, DiV go the whole hog on Scorpio Rising, drafting in proper band leaders like Liam Gallagher (Oasis), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and even mod hero Paul Weller, growling to good effect on the Gene Vincent cover "So You Say You Lost Your Baby." Gallagher’s cut is probably the standout though, putting brother Noel’s Chemical Brothers efforts to shame as he roars over Fearless’ Beatles-esque backward loops.Together, Scorpio is a startling collection of odd beats and diverse tempos. If it's smooth grooves you're lookin' for this CD deserves a listen. It took me a while to find a copy at a reasonable price, but it was worth the hunting and waiting. The soft sexy vocals, drums and electronica will transport you to a new ultra-cool universe. Three highlights are "Heart of the Hustler", "Sapphire" and "Angela's Lament".

If smooth rockin' grooves, cool, superfly riffs and ultra-sexy vocals are your thang, BUY THIS NOW! This CD is an inspiration. It made me realize how good music can truly transport you back to a time when quality music was out there for the picking. It also has the most modern feel w/out sacrificing any of the quality retro sounds. I love all kinds of music and this CD totally rocks! Not a filler track on here, ALL gems!

Serve Chilled........2004-09-01

This is one of the best chilled albums i got, the music itself is very seductive, chilled, groovy (+ any other word if you can think of in this genre!). It was really a discovery for me, i won't describe it as just-another chill-out CD or even only-chill-out music; Thunderball guys shows exceptional talent in creating music in both down-temp and upbeat styles, the whole album is brilliant, sexy vocals are on top. The two highlights of the album, are "Heart of the hustler" and "Angela's Lament", the later is personal favorite. Addictive. Hats off and five stars for Scorpio Rising.

Ive read reviews here for years and have never been compelled to write one EVER. I cant wax lyrical about about much but I will say that, at the very least, even if you bought this album off the back of hearing just a snippet of one of these tunes, I promise you, you wont go wrong. Ive been searching for the holy grail as far as the perfect album is concerned and never really found it - but I have had this album in my car constantly since I bought it a few years ago, and whilst other cd's have come and gone, this one will not go away, and frankly, I wouldnt want it to. Its bright, bubbly, smooth but punchy when it has to be, and I cant think of a moment in the day when you wouldnt want to slip this on and it still hits the spot....remarkable.

Surprisingly GOOD.......2006-09-11

I was wary about buying this cd when I first saw it at Bestbuy, but after purchasing it, I was more than pleasantly surprised. I would like to take this oppurtunity to address "S.Walden", who obviously hasn't listened to Prong as long as I have. Tommy Victor has always been the heart & soul of this band, even though Ted Parsons and Mike Kirkland(the ORIGINAL members...) are gone, I have to hand it to Tommy Victor for pushing forward and staying true to his "sound". This album sounds MUCH more fresh, and it punches you in the face from the beginning and doesn't let go of your throat until the end...by that time? You're taken in. Highlight tracks on this album are, "All Knowing Force", "Inner Truth", and "Out Of This Realm". Sounds to me as if Tommy is taking Prong more or less back to it's roots.

Prong is on fire.......2006-09-10

New sounds that cut the edge. Nothing is rehashed here. How anyone could say this album is bad just tells me they've got a very narrow view of what they think good music is and are just living in the past. Furthermore, anyone connecting Prong to nu-metal is simply completely out of touch with any uderstanding of music genre. Good grief. You must be kidding.

It's innovative, uncomprimising and true to the Prong sound. Tommy's programming work is supreme. Prong continues to blaze their own trail and the new recruits fit right in with synergy. Worth eight years wait.

Prong...Stay together gentlemen, and your fans look very much forward to your next CD.

Reminds of the good old Prong, very well done Tommy Victor !
Everything is great, except the lack of heavy drums. The only thing I don't like completely. Therefore 4 stars. Else, everything's great. Love the songs.

P.S.: I don't understand people writing blurry things like Prong being nu-metal. Apparently those people are part of the nu-metal generation (God, I hate this word nu-metal).
On this record, the great quality of the underrated and genius PRONG shines again, good "comeback".

It's good to hear from Tommy and the crew again.......2006-06-25

Ok, lets face it, prong had dissappeared of the face of the earth for 8 years, with tommy victor doing many things (in the studio, playing with danzig, now with ministry). I have loved these guys since "beg to differ" and "prove you wrong". This album is still has the fast mechanical metal edge that prong had years ago. Not quite as polished as Clensing (still my favorite prong album), more like rude awakening. I have the import version of scorpio rising with a few of the tracks mis-listed on the liner notes (fyi for those of you paying attention).
I saw these guys on 100% live tour at a small venue, awsome there, and good preparation for this album. The mixing and production went together well here. Buy the Vault DVD if you want to see the tour in promotion for this album. This band has had so much influence on todays "nu metal" bands, and their time has come again. I like all of the tracks on here, pick it up today.

A Great Introduction to the World of Prong! Check it out!.......2006-05-04

I didn't know much about Prong until recently. As a huge fan of Helmet, I was searching for similar artists and I came up with Prong and their extensive catalogue. Being the most recent release, I decided to go with Scorpio Rising, and I am very pleased. Many reviewers seem to reject this one in favor of the classic Prong releases, such as Cleasing. This is largely due to the change in band members and an inevitably different instrumental tone (although even this seems slight). Overall, this is a solid release, with chugging guitar riffs complimenting frontman Tommy V's classic Prong vocal stylings (I've checked out some sound clips from thier earlier albums). Many times Prong's sound is described as industrial, although that is not showcased on Scorpio. Rather, this is much more an ode to straight up guitar riffage and vocals that display anger and frustration without relying on monotonous and constant screaming. No doubt I will be delving even further into the bands music, but I will always know that Scorpio Rising was the one that started it all for me. Check this one out, especially if you are new to the world of Prong! Thanks for reading and rock on!

Great (dare I say it) chill-out music..........2006-04-16

Death In Vegas' "Scorpio Rising" is a delicious mix of slow burning rock, ice cold electro and hippy mantras. Some would be familiar with "Girls", a slow burning rock fuzz track with dreamy vocals (included in the Lost in Translation OST), others would know the Liam Gallagher - Scorpio Rising track (not to dissimilar with Liam's previous collaborations with the Chemical Brothers) - so so catchy. Others would know the bitter icy track of "Hands Around My Throat" - where Death in Vegas use the electroclash sounds to brilliant effect (my favourite track).

Death in Vegas step in and out of various musical styles with the slightest of ease throughout Scorpio Rising. This is the sort of CD that is brilliant for dinner parties and such. Cool, modern and sexy.

One small blip on the CD is the misjudged "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" with Paul Weller - a out of place rock tune which just grates against the smoothness of the rest of the CD.

Overall - if you like (dare I say it) "chill-out" music - then you will probably like this.

identity crisis.......2005-09-29

i guess Death In Vegas have a few famous pals and these pals were gracious enough to lend their vocals to some of these songs. the basic mood here is dark rock music with a danceable edge. or perhaps the other way around. but there's alot of shifts in moods and atmosphere. the opening track kinda reminds me of some of those 4AD bands like Swallow or maybe Ultra Vivid Scene, with it's distorted bass and cool breathy female background vocals. a pretty good way to start the record. but as the album continues, there seems to be a lack of focus. this record doesn't really grab me as a whole; even though there are some good songs on it. one feeling i get is that i am never really getting to know Death In Vegas for who they are. it's like all their songs were specifically written for their special guests. the mellow acoustic numbers go to Hope Sandoval, the electro groove numbers go to the more throaty singers, etc. it seems a little too safe and in the box. but like i said, there are some nice moments. Scorpio Rising is a fairly enjoyable album, just not an essential one.

At first listen, I didnt like it as much as the Contino Sessions, which is brilliant in my opinion, but the second time I listened to it, I realized that I did in fact love this album. All songs are really good. I was surprised to see "Girls" in the Lost In Translation soundtrack. (They should have put the Peaches song on it too... You all know which one...Wimps...) Its hard to pick favorites, as they are all good, but I would have to say 'Scorpio Rising', and the 2 Hope Sandoval songs, because I love her. Especially the last song, 'Help Yourself'. OK, so I have an absolute favorite. It is 'Help Yourself'. A very long song, but absolutely worth it. Ill be looking forward to their next album with baited breath. Good work guys. Keep it up.

The Death Are back.......2003-10-16

This latest Album from Death In Vegas has to be there greatest work yet. The title track Scorpio Rising with Liam Gallagher supplying the vocals has to be the pick of the bunch. This one track is worth the price of the album, however you shouldn't think this album is a one hit wonder all the other tracks are excellent. They will reach out and tenderly rap themselves around your ear drums, until you find yourself play the album over and over again. Well I did away, just buy the album and you will find out.

.........if you MUST criticize DIV for being too 'retro' because of an appearence by Liam Gallagher (hipsters LOVE to hate Oasis) at least prove to me you can spell his name correctly. No, it's not spelled 'Galagher'.......but thanks for playing.

As for my two cents on the album - it's top. It mixes electronic and transient-style to create an aural ambience all it's own. Blending 60's psychedelica (GASP! How COULD they?) on some tunes and more modern noise on others, it's a winning combo.

Cameos by Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) Paul Weller (the Jam) and yes, Mr. Liam Gallagher are all first rate: It's Liam's punk rock-style that hits home hardest to me on the title cut "Scorpio Rising." He sings with a venom he hasn't had since `Definitely Maybe.' Awesome. Weller's cut, a re-working of Gene Clarke's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" is another gem. In fact, it's one of the strongest Paul's put his vocals to since his solo career started. Hope Sandoval contributions are angelic yet rough, creating just the type of contrast DIV want.

Make no mistake - this isn't retro (and if we're using that godawful label, isn't ALL music really retro?) at all - DIV are doing their own thing, which to me, can only be right.

Don't listen to detractors who can't even spell the name of the artist they're bashing. Just check the album out and judge for yourselves.

NO FILLERS OR REDUNDANCY HERE!!!.......2003-02-28

I'm actually shocked that some reviewers are calling this release redundant or say it's containing filler material. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion.I was anxiously awaiting the release of this CD and I wasn't dissapointed one bit.I had already purchased the 2 "Hands Around My Throat" single CD's & DVD and SCORPIO RISING lived up to my anticipations.
"Leather" is an instrumental(most groups don't have the intestinal fortitude to release instrumentals at all)that starts out as annoying fuzz and ends with annoying feedback turning into fuzz that becomes the opening of the second song, "Girls". What more could anyone ask from a song? "Leather" builds to an eighties underground pop(yes, there really is such a genre)feel.
"Girls" builds itself with electronic and vocal layering until it becomes a fast-paced worthy of any dance floor and then BAM...DIV masterfully brings it down to minimalist style to end.
"Hands Around My Throat" is the first song on the CD to actually feature vocal leads. It starts out with the irksome(read that as great) click of a scratched vinyl disc which soon becomes part of the beat.This is a tremendous song.
"23 Lies" is a slower paced offering with some great vocal work by Susan Lillane.
The title tune, "Scorpio Rising", is reminiscent of a drug induced journey back to 1966 and the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Liam Gallagher's vocals add the perfect touch here.
"Killing Smile", featuring Hope Sandoval on vocals, fits the style & sound of the music to a T."Killing Smile" is a bit of bluegrass meeting the underground with a little classical reinforcement.
"Nalja" certainly isn't filler material by any stretch of the imagination. DIV has always dared to be eclectic. You never know what's coming next, but you can always count on the musical excitement it will bring you, without fail.
"So You Say You Lost Your Baby" is a true classic that never made it.Paul Weller stops in to add his vocal touch on this 35 year old gem originally written and recorded by the late Gene Clarke of the original Byrds. This is another great trip back to '66 Hollywood.
"Living Horses" slow moving, moody sound accentuates Dot Allison's beautiful vocals. This is another masterpiece not to be missed.
The final song "Help Yourself" had Hope Sandoval returning to do the singing. This is yet another great song that builds in just the right places at just the right times, right up through the stylish, softened conclusion.
I don't know what DIV fans were expecting, but I fail to see how this CD could be much better than it already is. There's absolutely nothing wrong with looking to both the past and future at the same time, and this CD does just that. The mix and production could never be improved upon, and for me to say that is almost unbelieveable in itself. "SCORPIO RISING" is a major music lesson for all who dare listen.

Floating away into mushroom Hell.......2003-02-04

This album gets 3 stars for "Hands Around My Throat" and the last track alone. Other than that, what we have here is a band that seems to be trading in musical innovation for redundant experiments in psychedelia. It almost makes the gutsy "Contino Sessions" LP look like a fluke. It's tough to tell if they'll pull it together for the next album, and for now I'm just going to assume they recorded this album while on a very bad, very extended mushroom trip. Because they really have proven themselves to be a great band in the past. Check out "Contino Sessions" and "Dead Elvis." They don't disappoint the way "Scorpio Rising" does.

A good mix.......2002-11-27

This album offers a great mix of musical styles, though some of the songs occasionally sound a bit to much like fillers in between the better tracks. Hand around my throat is a great old style track and I even liked the beatlesque title track with a cameo by Liam Gallacher.

Reassessment.......2006-06-30

It was "Scorpio Rising" along with "Uranus," "Gipsy Folk Tales," and "Backgammon" (the latter three numbers staples of the Art Blakey book in the 1970's) that led me to look up this final piano trio recording by the composer of the aforementioned tunes. Not only was Davis Jr. no mere Bud Powell clone, as commonly reported, but he was a composer of singularly visionary capabilities. In fact, I wish his forward-looking, highly innovative harmonic-melodic structures had been there to guide Coltrane after the "Giant Steps" period.

Davis Jr. sounds somewhat physically weak to me on this recording but compensates with the strength of his swinging, intricate lines (e.g. "Just One of Those Things") and his admirable restraint and patience on the slow-tempoed ballads. He's definitely far more in command than Bud was at this late stage in his career, and he's especially well-served by a muscular yet responsive rhythm section.

The album nevertheless leaves two mysteries: the source of Davis's inspiration for these futuristic, essentially "non-pianistic" numbers; the liner notes' basis for accrediting him as composer of the familiar, quasi-schmaltz pop tune, "Two Different Worlds" (I'm sure the copyright lawyers would clear this up if they smelled a profit).

Somewhere between his undistinguished first recording ("Davis Cup") and this last one, Davis became one of the most original composers in American music. He completely demolishes two myths: that jazz in the '70's was fusion-infected and moribund; that hard bop as played by the Jazz Messengers was predictable and formulaic. Davis was a musical thinker on a grandiose, operatic, Promethean scale. I hope that the "right" musicians will catch up to him and reprise his challenging, exciting, unequalled compositions before it's too late (most are out of print or never made it to CD).
