Awesome.......2007-07-12
Huge disappointment, at least for me........2007-06-10
I found out about this release about a month before its release and counted down the days. The idea seemed so ingenious. (I absolutely love the cover, too.) I guess I got it with the wrong expectations. I was thinking it would be like the wonderful Motown Remixed album, but what I got was very different. All of the mixes sound the same to me. They are very long, drawn-out and repetitive house remixes with Simone's vocals buried or hidden somewhere in the mix after about two minutes of anti-climactic beats. It's quite sad because this seems more of a showcase of the mixers than the voice of Simone. Not right. The only song I enjoyed on here was the remix of "Ain't Got No - I Got Life."
Also, there is no booklet. All the other Legacy releases had great booklets with interviews, biographies, or memories from friends and family. I was quite disappointed that there wasn't one present here. The CD is housed in a nice digipak and great artwork, though.
So, down to the point: if you like house music, then this is probably for you. If you're thinking something different when you hear 'remix' and your main focus is on the artist, then this probably isn't. I'll stick to the good ol' originals, thank you.

Motown Remixed Vol. 2: 'Latin' Mixes.......2007-05-23
Highlights:
'Shotgun' really benefits from the Latin treatment, which smoothly integrates the sax and organ of the original with a Latin steel drum beat. The addition of the Latin flavor to the Motown sound also works well for 'Dancing Machine'. The new mix really swings with an added brass arrangement. The best parts of the song (Michael's first verses, the instrumental breakdown) are drawn out and repeated (the instrumental breakdown has a really Latin flavor, who knew?) and the instrumental build-up behind Jermaine's lines is an excellent touch. The Andres Levin mix of 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' is the crowning glory of the album. Marvin's vocals are front and center, as they should be, and they are perfectly complemented by the mix, which features a piano track. It's absolute alchemy! It reminds me of the genius of a Freemasons remix. Another solid track is the mix of the Spanish-language version of 'Being With You'. The trademark saxophone of the original is omitted, but Smokey's always-brilliant vocals are placed over layers of bongos and strings, creating a slightly more (just slightly, though) uptempo sound than the original.
Lowlights:
The 'The Boss' mix is dreadful...the mix strips the original instrumentation and is very salsa/tango music with a hint of reggae, which is fine, but paired with Diana's vocals all the drama of the song is zapped. And if you've heard 'The Boss,' it is ALL ABOUT the drama. All that is lost in this mix, unfortunately. There's something about the key of the original vocals and the key of new mix that doesn't match well at all. Not to mention that her vocals are too muddled. A bit of a disaster. Both the David Elizondo mixes (of 'Heat Wave' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone') have a reggae sound as well, and I'm not a huge fan of reggae so naturally I'm a bit predisposed against them. It works much better for 'Heat Wave,' but neither track is one I plan on listening to again.
In the middle:
The SPK mix of 'I Want You Back' is very subtle, to the point where I might have to take a minute before realizing it's a mix. If I want to hear the original, I've already got it. The mix of 'I Can't Get Next To You' is subtle but slightly less so...it attempts to add drama with an extra drumbeat and a rock guitar sound, and the breakdown is mixed. But the original already had drama with the frantic passing around of the vocals, and the original beat complemented it perfectly. This mix seems to be a bit overkill. The 'Square Biz' mix is very calypso flavored and fun, but Teena Marie's vocals are slightly overpowered by the instrumental track. And the original 'Don't Look Any Further' has a bit of a Latin/reggae feel, which ironically is stripped a bit for the new mix. A folky-Latin guitar arrangement is added, and it has a bit more of a downtempo sound. I prefer the original but this version is quality (it would have been much more fitting on the first Motown Remixed album).
So, 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4) for a solid remix album. Regarding the series in general, I do wish that instead of themes, the Motown Remixed series would focus on compiling the best Motown remixes out there, regardless of style. And I wish the series would come out more often than once every two years! Remixes of Motown tracks are constantly hitting the clubs, so there's no shortage of material.

The sequel to 2002's Verve Remixed follows and improves upon the original's formula; take material from the storied vaults at Verve Records and let top DJs of the modern era have at them. Featuring an impressive roster of dance artists like Miguel Migs, Koop, and Fila Brazillia, the trick is matching DJ with jazz standard in a way that compliments both. It's a tough chore, given the classics involved and the need to do them justice. On Sarah Vaughan's "Whatever Lola Wants," Gotan Project manage the task with distinction, filtering rustic and romantic accordions through the song's lusty machinations. Astute choices are required, like Mondo Grosso's decision to build a solid thump out of just the central melody of Archie Shepp's "Blues For Brother George Jackson." Sometimes, the best thing to do is get out of the way; Mr. Scruff's Soul Party Mix of "Do What You Wanna" only adds some background party noise to Ramsey Lewis' ripping keyboard solo. VR2 doesn't hit the mark every time, but the combinations that work accomplish what only the best dance music does--they crumble the walls between genres and encourage us all to get down together. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

There are once again two remixes of Nina Simone recordings. There are also two Ella Fitzgerald recordings remixed. Several instrumental tracks are remixed - I don't get the point of that, but they are included here.
This sequel is not nearly as good as the original.

Both regal and raunchy, Queen was at the height of its powers in the mid-70s, riding the soaring vocals of Freddie Mercury, the ringing guitar crunch of Brian May and the band's shameless theatrical flourishes. Coming so quickly after the band's A Night At the Opera opus, this 1976 album works hard at repeating the same hit-making elements, down to the matching cover art. If A Day At the Races lacks the same level of pop tunesmanship, there is still energy in these tracks, particularly in the rocking "Tie Your Mother Down" and the emotional "Somebody to Love," which set a blueprint for future ballads by the band. --Steve ApplefordAlbum Details

The manipulation of classic jazz tracks has been part of DJ club culture since the '80s, as artists have continually scratched, looped, and sampled beats and phrases. Verve Remixed has been in the planning stages for years, with in-house producers inviting an international cast of remix artists to select songs from the label's vaults. The results are often tremendously successful, as the remix artists have picked up and expanded upon elements already present in the original. The funky Latin beat of Willie Bobo's "Spanish Grease" gets new life from Richard Dorfmeister, along with a prominent new bass line. Similarly, King Britt pumps up the Indian elements of Tony Scott's "Hare Krishna." dZihan and Kamien's trance remix (with tabla drums) of Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain" is among the most arresting tracks, creating psychodrama between Holiday's original vocal and the new environment. Nina Simone's voice seems tailor-made for this approach, as if it has always cried out for the layered rhythmic emphasis. Masters at Work's take on her "See-Line Woman" is electric in its intensity--cool flute sonorities and metallic percussion embrace and catapult the original vocal into a new presence. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:

Worst of the series.......2006-04-27
By contrast, the #2 and #3 CDs in the series are great. I find this puzzling. Usually, sequels suck. In this case, the musicheads at Verve seem to have improved their game with practice. I respect them for that. Now I'll just start up Remixed #3 and bliss out for a while.
Brilliantly Groovy and Funky !.......2006-02-20
1) The quality of the original (unmixed) tracks is superb. Great songs to begin with.
2) The remixes do great justice to the original songs and performers. There's a great deal of respect to these legendary performers and their voices in the remixes.
3) The quality of these remixes is outstanding.
The result is unbelievable. You'll get an incredibly well-produced compilation of jazz hits from SUPER-performers such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday remixed by MEGA-DJ's/producers like Rae & Christian, dZihan & Kamien, De-Phazz, Thievery Corporation, King Britt, UFO, Funky Lowlives, etc...
BUT BEWARE, the sound is not jazz (maybe nu-jazz or electro-jazz, but not jazz). It is definitely sexy, groovy, funky, retro-cool, classy electronic music with touches of jazz. Perfect for any situation. Pre-party warm-up at home, martini-drinking at a nice lounge, people-watching at THE white party in South Beach, or maybe simply at home working on your laptop.
This CD is sooo good, it's gonna make you feel hip, cool, and sexy...But all that BS aside, the track selection, remixes, and overall production quality make of this album a TRUE GEM. Go get it.
Pretty impossible to put down..........2006-01-12
So, what makes it work? Well, in the case of Richard Dorfmeister's stunning interpretation of Willie Bobo's "Spanish Grease" it's understanding why the original is so infectious and then overlaying & seriously extending these elements with the very best of electronica/dance to make it... much better. Or in the case of Thievery Corporation's total rework of Astrud Gilberto's "Who Needs Forever?" its taking a couple of phrases from the song that capture the atmosphere & essence of the artist and using them to produce something that, while it bears little relation to the original, becomes one of the very best Astrud Gilberto tracks you'll ever hear.
Clever & brilliantly effective, the whole album is stuffed full of similarly impressive remixes by some of the best club artists around and, if you like this sort of thing, it's an absolute "must buy". And, if you don't, it may well make you think again because once it gets its hooks into you it's pretty impossible to put down.

Reinvention Is The Spice Of Music.......2007-07-21
I WANT YOU BACK-Unlike the J5's classic original this one is far more stripped down to allow the groove to shine through and the vocals to stick right out at you.
I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE-Randy Watson really threw on the latin percussion very heavily for this one-again the groove is emphasized over the production.
LET'S GET IT ON-NO DISRESPECT toward Marvin Gaye;he was THE MAN!!!!But I find this mix of his 1973 to be far more sophisticated then his orignal.By 1973 the music on the original still had a very strong 60's flavor. This smooth kind of early 80'ish pop/soul backdrop actually brings out the raw sexuallity of the original to a more pronounced degree.
SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED I'M YOURS-DJ Smash really let go the heavy turn table funk let loose and the beats slam at you the same way Stevie's as always animated singing did.
ABC-Krunk was at it's peak when this was made and it shows;basically it turns out to be a mere update of the J5's equally slamming, funky original!
I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE-This is amazing! The collage of sound and wah wah's make for more of a heavy funk version then the originals more rockish sound!
PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE-Yes this appeared on the new Motown Remixed, Vol. 2 but this version didn't get the recognition that the new one did;this being more of a straight modernization of the original then the new version. But I love both and they sound fantastic.
QUIET STORM-Not that Smokey's wasn't chilled out enough this one does so even more by stripping back about 75& of what little music was already there and leaving you with little more then Smokey's emotional delivery and style.
MY WORLD IS EMPTY WITHOUT YOU-This is really a novel concept;take a girl group sounding song from 1966 and make it sound like a girl group song of 2005.However Diana's vocals have the genuine passion and lack the caterwalling melodrama of most female singers who would sing this kind of thing today.
JUST MY IMAGINATION-Again a pleasant update of the original;this song sounds great no matter what.
SMILING FACES SOMETIMES-For everyone who thought this song always needed a beat well that's what you'll get here. The song is virtually unchanged except for the addition of a "funky drummer".
THE TEARS OF A CLOWN- This drum n bass style mix really does justice to the style of the original;the way it might have been recorded had it been written today.
KEEP ON TRUCKIN-The approch DJ Spinna takes with this is somewhat different;he keeps 95% of the original music intact but instead of adding upon it he ELIMINATES horns, wah wahs and other production devices from the original for a more genuinely funky style
MARY JANE-This is really the only remix on the album that suffers badly from too much DJ'ing over the original and doesn't really say much for the original.
Well there you have my two cents!

It's an idea that never should've worked in the first place: Verve classics remixed by today's hottest DJs and producers. Yet here's the third installment in the successful series and quality control remains high. Granted, there are a few tracks on each compilation that don't work as well as others and Verve Remixed 3 is no exception. The Postal Service take on Nina Simone's "Little Girl Blue," for instance, makes for a pleasing listen, but sounds too much like the former (the Album Leaf does a better job at staying out of Simone's way). Adam Freeland's "Fever" and Max Sedgley's "Peter Gunn," however, get the balance right. Both songs have been updated for the dancefloor, but Sarah Vaughn's exquisite vocals remain front and center. Then there's Lyrics Born with Jimmy Smith's "Stay Loose," which keeps Smith's groovy organ work in the foreground, but makes a funky track funkier yet. --Kathleen C. FennessyAlbum Description
Since its debut in 2002, Verve Remixed has paired some of the world's most adventurous DJs and producers with some of the best jazz music in history. The pioneering series has achieved the rare feat of becoming both a critical and commercial success, culling the esteemed catalog of Verve Records and tapping into the creative visions of an influential generation of beat-makers. Verve Remixed 3 continues the series' mission of shaping jazz into vital contemporary music, this time with a new lineup of all-star beat-makers.Customer Reviews:

VERVE/REMIXED 3 consists of 13 newly remixed songs. Disc packaged in clear jewel case; total running time: 63:38. Booklet does not include information about the original recordings (not even songwriting credits).
Once again, there are two Nina Simone recordings remixed. Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan both have two songs each. And Brazilian singer Astruid Gilberto appears once again.
While containing less music (less 1 track and 10 minutes), this is a better collection than "Verve/Remixed 2". Sarah Vaughan's "Peter Gunn" is very fun; Nina Simone's "Little Girl Blue" is nice. But (one-half of Gnarls Barkley) DJ Danger Mouse's remix of "Baby, Did You Hear?" is weak; Dinah's vocals are barely audible. Surprisingly, Anita O'Day's "Sing, Sing, Sing" is rather enjoyable.
Jazz on Crack.......2007-03-15
Of course, not everybody does a poor job, which is why I give it 2 stars. RSL and Bent definitely get it done. Honorable mentions to Lyrics Born and Junior Boys. As for everybody else... they should never be let into the Verve archives ever again.
PS. If you need your remix fix, look into Verve's "Jazz Remixed" album. It pretty much picks up where Remixed 2 left off.

Fresh, freestyle fun music to chill-out for..........2006-01-26
This compilation is the 3rd in it's series, the Verve Remixed (there is also an unmixed series), the concept in here is mixing old school jazzy stuff; Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Shirley Horn, Hugh Masekela to name of few, and taking it on a whole new level with modern day electronic music...
the results for my opinion is brilliant, really retro / lounge downtempo, with a funky twists and different moods, that you can chill-out too and also really get inside the music...
Nina Simone - Little Girl Blue (Postal Service Remix) 05:18
The whole thing, begins with a very mellow piece; it has lush vocals, taken from the original song, that really wraps with warm, fuzzy feeling... kind of moody, suits good for rainy days, and lazy saturdays; it has the occasional bleep and blops here and there, that overall gives this song a nice treatment...
Billie Holiday - Speak Low (Bent Remix) 04:22
A very retro feeling, with deep melancholic atmosphere, one of my favorites here, sad little number with Billie Holiday husky, deep voice singing about "love is a spark, lost in the dark...", very deep and retro, those are the words I can describe it.
Anita O'Day - Sing, Sing, Sing (RSL Remix) 06:08
wow, this is a funky-ass piece of music, Anita O'Day's singing really make you wiggle your ass: "sing, sing, sing, sing, everybody's starts to swing", it brings joy to me everytime I hear it, sounds like something taken from an old smokey jazz bar in the 50's, with the great funky jazz singing, and the trumpets and everything else around, is just a big carnival, delightful stuff !!!
Sarah Vaughan - Fever (Adam Freeland Remix) 04:38
Fever is a very well-known theme, that you will recognize as soon as you hear it, gets a fresh new treatment here, and it sounds good, giving it more on the groove section, making it sound really electronic and updated... it's good and uplifitng, wonderful stuff !
Shirley Horn - Come Dance with Me (Sugadaddy Remix) 04:40
One fellow from Groove Armada, and another guy called Tim Hutton adds to this song a whole new dance-house aspect, with House influences, and some great groove that make it sound really dirty; great piano line and the rusty voice of Shirley Horn on the lead... also one of the best in here, I love it very much !
Blossom Dearie - Just One of Those Things (Brazilian Girls Remix) 04:48
it's a pretty uptempo number, with some slight Techno riffs, and fast rhythm grinding along, the fast singing of the original lyrics is done nicely, and overall it doesn't really hits the spot, the Techno riffs and high BPM doesn't sound that right to me, but overall this is not bad.
Astrud Gilberto - The Gentle Rain (RJD2 Remix) 05:59
This is also one of the highlights of the album, very relaxing, and loungey feeling; the song just wraps you around with it's warm feeling, and gentle touch, the singing in here is very mellow, and there's a piano line the plays all along, that really adds to the overall great feeling !
Sarah Vaughan - Peter Gunn (Max Sedgley Remix) 05:07
another very well-known theme in here also, I think the melody is taken from one of James Bond's movies (am I correct ?), the main theme is absolutly contagious, and the overall effect is very dramatic, and the whole thing sounds well thought of, a proffesional work.
Jimmy Smith - Stay Loose (Lyrics Born Remix) 3:19
a short piece, funky, bluesy, happy... the Jimmy Smith singing is just wonderful, and the trumpets that follows along; the song is twisting and grooving, really funky stuff, that sounds so much freestyle... one of my favroties as well !!
Hugh Masekela - The Boy's Doin' It (Carl Craig Remix) 06:27
Hugh Masekela has a great voice, singing here in the bluesy way; the song combines technoish beats with cool trumpets, and nice rhythm to go with it, pretty minimal, but nonetheless works really good
Nina Simone - Lilac Wine (The Album Leaf Remix) 05:45
this is very delusional, stoned out music; you get here Nina Simone singing about how she like wine and everything is so hazey... and the dreamy melodies on the background, gives it a very weird atmosphere, very good for smoking and just chilling out too, very chilled piece with a twist...
Billie Holiday - Yesterdays (Junior Boys Remix) 02:25
super-slow, Lounge track with big retro feel to it, it's just a short filler, but very chilled-out and smooth, really enjoyable...
Dinah Washington - Baby, Did You Hear ? (Danger Mouse Remix) 03:31
for the closing song, we get a more on the hip-hop side of things, really fresh sounding; nice hip-hop like beats, and cool ending for this wonderful release.
i'm sorry if my review is too long to read, but when I start, I just cannot stop or make myself short; if you really read the review you probably know by now that this is a really rare collection, of fun and freestyle music, good for background music, for evenings at home, or saturday, or just chilling out too, this is a magnificent work, and I recommand it to everyone, and people that didn't read my review, this is very different and alternative kind of music - if you like old Jazz, Nu-Jazz, Lounge / Chill-Out, Bossa-Nova, Electro, Freestyle... this is one of the best thing that i've ever heard, such good and intersting music, HIGHLY RECOMMANDED.
also, there are vol. 1 & 2 that should be even better, my order is already on it's way !
PEACE

Daughter of original Bossa Nova legends Joao Gilberto and Miucha, niece of the great singer-songwriter Chico Burque, Bebel Gilberto's talents have proven more than worthy of her exalted descent. She has not only helped to revitalize modern Brazilian music but has established it as a major force on the world stage. But are these 13 remixes worthy of her? The answer is a qualified yes. The whole point of this type of exercise is to reveal new facets of an existing track by inviting another artist to collaborate on it--after the fact. Everyone involved with these re-workings displays considerable taste and restraint; thus any negative impressions would have to be completely subjective. The originals were produced by Marius de Vries and were comparatively pop-oriented anyway. Gently-imposed beats and touches of chilly electronica do not freeze the singer's digital hothouse bloom but add an additional dimension. Some tunes, such as Céu Distante, even emerge embellished with a surprisingly genteel, retro finesse. --Christina RodenAlbum Description

Revisiting Bebel Gilberto.......2006-09-11
The highlights are DJ Spinna's "Ceu Distante",Latin Project's "Aganju",Telefon Tel Aviv's "All Around"&Steven Hillier's almost folk music version of "Next to you." Guy Sigsworth's "O Caminho" reflects Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love" in its opening keyboard chords.Latin Project's take on "Aganju" better suits the piece than Spiritual South's boringly repetitive one.Stuhr's version of "Jabuticaba" was on Putumayo's World Music Hour;it's as frothy&dancy as the original.
The bonus disc offers dub versions of songs already on the remix.I was fortunate to get a copy of "Bebel Gilberto Remixed" with the special edition bonus disc before it ran out! This is a must for Brazilian music fans;it's very loungy and relaxing.
Great Listening, Even After Repeated Listens.......2006-07-24
On the other hand, the remixes on this CD are quite excellent. I haven't gotten tired of listening to this CD, even after repeated listens. It's one of the best remix albums I've ever heard, and I can only think of two really great remix albums (the other being Remix Dystempter by Skinny Puppy).
My favorites are "Winter" (Nuspirit Helsinki Reinterpretation) and "Baby" (Yam Who?). I get goose bumps whenever I listen.
Don't pass this CD up if your a fan of Downtempo, Bossa Nove, Deep House, Etc. It's a must have CD for fans of these genre's.
The only down-note I can think of, about this CD, is that most people haven't even heard of Bebel Gilberto. Most people will never hear it, even alot of people into club music. But, oh well, I guess it's a buried treasure for us open minded people to enjoy.
