In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah ChinCustomer Reviews:

Anyway, the complaints out of the way this album is excellent for the most part. Fallen Angels, Tell Me, Love, SUPERMAN SAY YOU WILL UNDERTAKEN TAKEN everything is just awesome. I do notice however that the group shied a little bit away from the defining Egyptian roots that made them who they are. Hopefully, Black Sun will patch that gap.

Excellent second release for a great band.......2007-01-05
That being said, I haven't had Duality for long. I actually only knew it was out after I saw them perform at Locobazooka last summer. It was pretty much the next CD I bought, and it does not fail to deliver.
Like on their first CD, Ra continues to play interesting, unique music, backed up by Sahaj's amazing vocals. A friend of mine once said "you know a band is great when they have their own sound - when you can hear them and instantly recognize them, even if you don't know them well." I've always believed this, and for Ra, it's certainly true. They have a very distinctive, unique sound, and that is something which is becoming increasingly hard to find in the music industry these days.
Put simply, Duality is incredible. It starts off with a semi-odd track of a man talking which segues into "Fallen Angels," a hard hitting song that sets the tone for the rest of the album. This CD stays strong towards the middle and end, and doesn't get boring. Especially interesting on this CD (to those of use that remember this song) is Ra's cover of "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic." It's well done, and puts a smile on my face every time I listen to this album.
Overall, this is a great CD that doesn't fail to disappoint. For those of you that haven't heard Ra, this is great for fans of Pulse Ultra, Chevelle, Memento, and old Incubus.

One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27
This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.
Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.
This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

fun rock music.......2005-12-30
I love the first half of this CD because it's pumped up and fast paced. The second half is more of a downer. The singer is very good with his voice, and its more high pitched (he's like an alto) , like in The Mars Volta. The difference here is that I can stand Ra, but not TMV.
I became interested in this band when I heard "rectifier" on Chronix Radio (internet via shoutcast).
As for flaws, I think they just repeat too many lines. Come up with some more lyrics! Yes, I like rectifier, but he says "rectifier" like 20 times during it. This makes for songs with less shelf life because you get tired of them.
Anyway, I do really like this CD because it seems to be something you can listen to with anyone. I'd rather pull this out than In Flames, Opeth, or Trivium when I'm with someone I don't know too well. Much more accessible music.
Enjoy.

I personally enjoyed the CD, as I could relate the music back to the particular episodes in which they appeared. Some of the tracks are sweet and melodic, others are more ominious, so it doesn't come up short on variety.
The music sounds, for the most part, rather sythesised (which is why, if you are used to sprawling epic soundtracks from mainstram movies, I generally don't recommend this if you have never watched the show). Tracks are usually a mixture of synthesised sounds combined with more organic notes from traditional instruments, creating a very "sci fi" sound.
This is a great CD to work and study to as it provides great background music without being too intrusive.

Singular Musical Masterpiece.......2007-06-09
Strings comes from the mid-60's NYC period when Mr. Mystery was at his creative height, releasing such classics as Cosmic Tones, Heliocentric Worlds and the Magic City. Each is unique, but Strings completely stands out in terms of one of a kind brilliance.
Sonny sent his band over to a 3rd world import shop to pick up various modest hand made musical instruments. Then, after scant time to become at all familiar with them, he turned on the tape deck and conducted his band into a performance that is both fascinating and compelling. It is pure magic. Highest possible recommendation to anyone seeking a most bold and adventurous work of art.
This CD tacks on an additional track recorded a year after the first three. It consists of Sonny playing a squeaking door, accompanied by a couple of those plucking strings. While it may not be his most compelling composition, it must be said that he puts his complete focus into getting everything he can out of that squeak, extracting a strong fundamental tone that has an almost synthesized quality. As usual his Saturian mind was sensitive to sound potentials that elude the imagination of mere earthlings.

Good musicianship.......2007-07-21
The huge, electric "orchestra" present on the debut had been reduced to a four-piece comprised of Roger Powell (synthesizers, piano, organ, and vocals); Todd Rundgren (electric and acoustic guitars); Kasim Sulton (electric bass guitar and vocals); and John "Willie" Wilcox (drums percussion, and vocals). This lineup was great and there is some impressive proggy ensemble work on RA. The abilities of each member are showcased on the lengthy track Singring and the Glass Guitar (An Electrified Fairytale) - they all get a 1-2 minute unaccompanied solo. Of the solos, I liked Roger's synthesizer workout the best.
The seven tracks on RA range in length from 3'28" to the lengthy 18'24" Singring and the Glass Guitar. The music on RA is very much in the vein of what you might expect from the early Utopia albums: Olympian-scale feats on individual instruments; dense ensemble work; great vocal harmonies; and the occasional pop hook or two...or three. In general, I am fine with the music although I do not think that Singring works very well from a composition perspective: while there are excellent main themes and some great ensemble work at the beginning and end, about half of the piece is comprised of unaccompanied solos, a few of which are just a bit dull. My favorite tracks include Overture: Mountaintop and Sunrise/Communion with the Sun along with Sunburst Finish, although all of the pieces have something to offer. The odd track out is Magic Dragon Theatre which merges a scene from an imaginary "play" (complete with dialog), with some good prog. Very interesting overall.
In terms of the concepts on RA, quite literally, everything under the "sun" is taken on. Of these concepts, the one that I latched on to (or at least loosely embraced) is that presented on Singring. There is a narrator on Singring that is supposed to be a Middle Earth dweller (an elf) that narrates the tale of Singring in what sounds like a mock Scottish accent on helium. I have to admit it is actually pretty funny, although I can imagine that most prog fans would raise their eyebrows at this track. As far as the actual concept goes, Singring tells the tale of four brave souls that locate the four keys needed to open up a glass guitar that contains an imprisoned and weeping spirit (Singring). I may be way off here (I am a Biologist), but it seems that Todd may have been bemoaning the loss of urgency and "spiritual vitality" in music in the late 1970's - "if you take a look around, harmony is dying" - and that this was his attempt to "rescue" the vitality and urgency of rock music. If this is what the band was aiming for then hats off to them.
In terms of the CD package, Rhino/Bearsville did a pretty good job and the CD booklet features each of the band members dressed up in Egyptian garb and posed in odd (quasi-ritualistic?) stances - with the exception of the drummer who simply stands with his arms folded over his chest. The lyrics to each of the songs are printed on the inner sleeve. The sound quality is excellent.
All in all, while RA is a good album of interesting prog rock and nice pop tunes, there were aspects of the album that just did not sit too well with me, although I am very forgiving and was able to overlook them. I would recommend this album to hardcore proggers as the last album of its type to be released by Utopia. After RA, the band plunged headlong into pop territory with Oops, Wrong Planet (1977). For those folks that are starting out with Utopia, definitely snag the 1974 debut album - it is a great listen.
Utopian Album.......2007-06-27
self indulgent silliness.......2006-08-29
The musicianship is stunning and there are some great melodies but it is still a silly, goof yconcept album. The chorus from Hiroshima? Todd what were you thinking?
There are enough hooks here that Utopia could have crafted real songs. To someone other than a Utopia fanatic, this is unlistenable.
Todd Squad!.......2006-06-19
This is what Todd should be known for!.......2005-05-04
What he is least credited for, but SHOULD be best-known for, is his fabulous work in his band Utopia, a group compromised of (at one point) THREE synth players. Todd Rundgren's experimentation with LSD may have played a huge role in his surge in tallent and creativity during these albums, but whatever the cause is, the effect is outstanding. Tales of lone sea creatures and tiny elves, reminesing about history, strange hillbilly voices, and REALLY sweet and progressive music is all found on this album.
'RA' can be considered a "concept album", if you will - setting a similar goal as Yes - Close to the Edge, Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick, and Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon. This isn't just a collection of songs, but all having something to do with (and possibly connecting to each other) about THE SUN. Yes, the sun is the only possible way that Japan and tiny elves can possibly relate to one another.
My favorite song on the LP is side two's legendary spectacular called "The Glass Guitar" (An Electrified Fairy Tale). You can tell that TR was on something when he wrote this song - it begins with a minute-long introduction by what sounds like an elf on helium,
"This is an electrified fairy tale. If you've never heard of an electrified fairy tale, just picture tiny elves, with wee-little electric guitars!" :)
The song is about (I think) these four keys located in the "four corners of the earth" which four brave "individuals" rescue from different elements of the earth (mountain, wind, fire, water). Once the keys are rescued, they are joined together to shed "light" on the earth - possibly the sun? I think this is not a mistake! ;)
Not surprisingly, it details these rescues of these keys with a solo from each of the band members (there are only four band members presently when the album is released) - so yes, the lone saviors of the world are also the humble "Utopia"! =)
The epic is 18 minutes long and has some VERY progressive movements. It is both catchy "There's a ru-mor I've heard, that's going a-round", frightening, incredibly passionate, and instrumentally complex. I hate to compare, but think "Close to the Edge" with a more focused story to it. It has all that a good song needs (but with MUCH better drumming than Bill Bruford's chops in Close to the Edge).
Who can I recommend this LP for? Certainly a rock fan with an open mind and a good taste. DEFINITELY Todd Rundgren fans (shame on you if you haven't picked this up already!), and last but not least Progressive Rock fans. I am a gigantic fan of progressive rock, and I'd say without hesitation that Utopia, particularly with this record, ranks up there with the likes of Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, and earlier King Crimson stuff.
This LP is HIGHLY recommended, and I suggest that if you're even VIEWING this review now, that you do not think a second longer about purchasing this record. You will be a better person for not only supporting the all-time most tallented musical hermit to ever exist, but for also enjoying one of the many lost treasures in seventies progressive music.

Why isn't Ra more known?.......2007-07-02
Great song selection, production values, and performances.......2007-05-15
This is an excellent live CD with one minor criticism. I find it difficult to rate this 5 stars for the simple fact that the first song has an extended lead-in with an emcee introducing the band. I really don't want to listen to that everytime I spin the CD, and while I can fastforward through it to get straight to the music, I still find it annoying. That said, I can still recommend this with almost no reservations.
I've been a fan of RA ever since I heard "Fallen Angels" on their Myspace profile. It's been a love affair ever since (I have a tattoo to prove it).
Having actually seen Ra in concert recently, I can say that this album captures their live sound very well. The production is great, erring on the side of overproduction, if anything. That's fine in my book. I don't want to listen to a live album where it's difficult to separate all the instruments. You know the type. Everything is all mashed together into a big sonic soup. Doesn't work for me. This album has no such problems, though you may find it a bit perfect for a live album if you like such things a bit "messier".
The vocal performance of Sahaj sparkles and captivates. All the instrumental performances are immaculate. I can't think of a single criticism in that department.
The song selection is great, covering most of my favorites. I particularly liked this rendition of Superman. The addition of the "Ludacris Rap" at the end of Skorn is awesome. I'm not a big rap fan, but I liked it- as I generally do enjoy when bands add extra verses to songs for live performances. It's like they're giving a little something extra to their adoring fans.
Last, but not least, this album contains the addition of a new Ra studio track called, "Don't Turn Away". I love this song. I had the privilege of hearing it performed live in Dallas before the album was even released. How awesome it was to be able to sing along to it and pump my fist at all the right times from having heard it off their Myspace page. Good stuff.
I highly recommend this album if you're a fan of Ra, or just live rock albums in general.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. This album every bit as accomplished as the book. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
