2 out of 5 stars Oh, hum..........2006-10-20

If you like music cliched, insepid, and over-produced, this is the one for you. I was very disappointed in this recording. It is very "commercial" with nothing memorable or inventive. The producer was a "Cosby" with a few songs by a "Cosby." The disco-tinged first track sets up the entire recording. It never really gets any better. I gave it two stars because...it's a "fair" recording. Had I to do it over, I'd pass on this one. I'll probably never play it again. There's too much good BS&T to listen to (Although I WILL put it ahead of Nuclear Blues).

5 out of 5 stars underappreciated gem.......2006-02-11

I was only 8 when this recording came out, but borrowed the record from a neighbor when I was in high school and never gave it back. The previous review sums it up nicely. This is an excellent group of essentially jazz musicians who demonstrate an open mind and creative spirit. The five stars is for the second half only. The suite shows off the writing and playing talents of Larry Willis, Ron McClure, Tony Klatka (formerly of Woody Herman's band) and demonstrates a mastery of many styles and sounds. The perfect vocals in the final "movement" almost say, "yeah, we can do pop-rock as well as anyone, too". If I were George Wadenius, I'd be really proud of the final track, She's Coming Home. Where has this caliber of writing (from guys more known as players than composers!) gone? If you like vintage BS&T, Chicago, EW&F, TOP, Stevie Wonder, Weather Report, Chick Corea, and the like, get this. Even the lack of Lew Soloff trumpet pyrotechnics is fine to this trumpet player.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting recording... New dimension in the group sound.......2005-09-07

This recording has some really strong moments. The group adds Jerry La Croix on sax and vocals as well as Bill Tillman on Saxophones. Ron McClure replaces Big Jim Fielder on bass. Tony Klatka on Trumpet and the group goes with two saxes, trombone and one Trumpet sound as opposed to the sharper voiced Two trumpet, sax, trombone, horn section. The group takes a stab at some R&B with "Tell Me That I'm Wrong" and some out and out pop on the Jerry La Croix pieces with mixed success. Fisher is his usual powerful self and saves "Tell Me That I'm Wrong". It's his conviction and power that really makes the song work. The arrangment is more Philly studio than Blood, Sweat & Tears. Jerry La Croix has a multi octave range but frankly is not in Fisher's class. His voice suited more to pop than anything else. I'm not complaining just making an observation.

Then the group hits is stride with "Are You Satisfied" and the Mirror Image Suite. Here the group returns to the strong form that was shown to such startling effect in "No Sweat" The addition of Tillman, La Croix, along with Wadenius, Willis and Fisher allows the group to sing harmonies quite well during Are You Satisfied" they segue into a marvelous instrumental suite that shows off their new horn section, Larry Willis and Georg Wadenius best sides. This section of the recording ranks right up there. A real high point. They run the gamut of their infuences well. Never at the expense of the song. No pschizoid instrumental moments. They stay to the point throughout the suite. Wadenius plays both jazz and then when the moment comes takes off at a dead run, and he rocks. The last song is an unusual haunting ballad sung alone by Georg Wadenius. The arrangment is, to my ears, outstanding with unusual voicings.

Very nice recording.

In this tale of a Special Forces officer pursuing one of his trainees running amok in the civilian world, William Friedkin tackles Hollywood's one-on-one chase genre with typical skill and style. But given the film's scope and built-in expectations, budding young composer Brian Tyler (The Children of Dune, Darkness Falls) was given the task of forging a near wall-to-wall soundscape of musical tension and suspense, a job that's produced veritable reams of McAction music cues in recent years. Tyler doesn't so much reinvent those cliches in his powerful, rhythmically charged work here as infuse them with some welcome new musical curiosity and intriguing flashes of orchestral color. One can sense the composer pushing his thematic constraints throughout; even his uses of electronic coloration have a fresh, edgy quality that further sets his work apart from the norm. If the composer and his co-orchestrators occasionally display their affection for Bernard Herrmann in their tense, timbre-expansive work here, it seems a welcome acceptance of the master's challenge to meet the constraints of genre with determined musical vision. --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars highway 61 missing?!.......2007-06-05

why is nobody mentionign the fact that they left off johnny cash's cover of 'highway 61 revisited'? there's no reason why that song should be unavailable and they just ommited it from the soundtrack but they included 'the man comes around'. it makes no sense.

5 out of 5 stars A thinking person's action score.......2006-06-28

This score is a bit left of center and it is awesome. The music is challenging but it is really satisfying. The complex string and percussion lines are something special to behold. Check it out if you are into modern orchestral music or intense scores.

4 out of 5 stars A different type of action score........2003-09-02

In a time where the market is saturated with too many Media Ventures scores(they are fun to listen to)as well as imitators, it is good to hear something different. Brian's music reminds me of scoring efforts of James Newton Howard and Elliot Goldenthal. Solely because orchaestrator Robert Elhai worked with both of them. If you are too used to the highly stylized synth scores of the aforementioned Media Ventures, what you hear will probably sound underwhelming. However, The Hunted showcases the amazing amount of talent and consistancy that Brian Tyler possesses. It's only half an hour because of union restrictions but it's all you need. Brian's upcoming score to Timeline should be very exciting.

3 out of 5 stars Average at best, hard to get into.......2003-05-07

This CD is OK, but I was expecting a lot more considering the nonstop pace of the movie. I'm a huge fan of this genre, particularly Zimmer, Mancina, Elfman, Horner, and Vangelis. I get a big rush out of the orchestrated movie tracks, especially the action oriented flicks. That's why I was a bit dissapointed with this work by Bryan Tyler.

The presentation (though not Brian Tyler's fault) feels rushed, like they had an intern put the cover insert together as an afterthought. Much more important, however, is what's in the 1's and 0's. It's hard not to compare this album to Hans Zimmer, particularly works like Peacemaker, Backdraft, & The Rock. But, ironically, if that's the case, then "The Hunted" doesn't even compare. It certainly has its moments, notably tracks 2, 4, 7, & 11, but not a lot else to make it stand out. This album has several heart-pumping action spots, with some quieter mystery & tension moments thrown in. All in all, there just isn't enough of it. The songs are all very short, as is the album itself. For me, these quick tracks would end just as I was getting into them, thereby inevitably letting me down too quickly. I think Mr Tyler has some good stuff going, but I'd like to see some extended songs that weave his work into a more fluid soundtrack. Granted, action movies are rarely fluid, so it would take a lot of extra work. Hans Zimmer's music is typically of the epic, powerful orchestrated type, using long sweeping songs based on an established theme of some kind, with a high production value as well. I'm certainly willing to try Brian Tyler's more aggressive yet less technical style, but in this case, it just felt too cold and distant for my tastes. In addition, don't waste your time if all you care about is Johnny Cash (though I do love his music), because this song is available on his most excellent latest CD, American IV: The Man Comes Around.

It's certainly not a bad CD, (I've heard worse), but I think it's of the bargain bin variety (sorry Amazon...). You might get a kick out of it, but this album won't likely get you hooked.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT CD ALMOST UNKNOW!.......2005-12-21

I'm listening to this cd in these days and I like it a lot.
It's the kind of cd that you must listen to a few times before you "enter" in it,but when it happen you will love it.
Mangold is a fine songwriter,a great pianist and an original singer. You can find his second solo cd at cd baby.
According with the other review it't sad that cds like this (I think to Ferenzik , Kasim Sulton and many others) can't reach a larger audience.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and uplifting.......1999-03-06

I was amazed to hear this quality from a CD which is relatively unknown and I wonder why it is not on a major label and in everyone's house. I would say the word is "uplifting" and "positive", to describe this record, in addition to great production, musicianship and vocals. The piano playing, lyrics and vocals are amazing, and seem channeled, definitely coming from a higher dimension. Mark has apparently written some hit songs for other artists but here is doing very personal, and spiritual (in a New Age sense) music that has the effect of giving you a good outlook for the day. Great for running or driving to also. I also found him at IndigoRecords@AOL, to see his book. I recommend it all.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, great singer.......2003-03-28

Jeri Brown and great music wrapped up into a concept recording. How can you beat that? There are many great female vocalists now current, including Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, and Tania Maria. I love them all, but Jeri Brown is something else, just the best. Her exquisite voice and stylings are in great company here. Alternating between ballads and moderately uptempo tunes, it is difficult to pick a favorite. When I listen to "Who's Been Loving You", that's my favorite, and then the next tune "I'll Remember Love" begins and that's now my favorite, and so it goes all the way through. Excellent accompaniment by Milton Sealey, Avery Sharpe and Grady Tate, who also adds tasteful vocals to duets on "Alone With You" and "You're My World". Sealey played a major part in the composition of all the music and he did a fine job, but I (and probably you) could do without his solo vocal on the last track. Just shut if off before that and you have a perfect recording.
